Smart plugs add convenience, but they also add network and software dependencies, potential security and privacy concerns, and a support lifespan that may end before the hardware does. The impact depends on the model: evidence about specific devices should not be treated as proof that every smart plug has the same weaknesses.
1. Setup and control can depend on your network and an app
A smart plug is not always a plug-and-go device. In a 2019 draft review of selected consumer IoT products, NIST found that the plugs it examined used Wi-Fi and manufacturer-provided iOS or Android companion apps, with account credentials needed during setup. NCSC guidance for smart devices also identifies internet access, a smartphone or tablet, and an app or online account as likely requirements. Exact requirements vary by model. That creates extra points of dependency: the home network, a compatible phone or tablet, and the manufacturer’s software or account may all matter for setup or control. The cited sources do not establish that every model needs cloud access or that a plug becomes unusable during an internet outage, so check the specific model’s documentation for local-control and outage behavior.
2. Security and privacy depend on the device and its software
Connecting an appliance to a network creates security considerations that a basic, unconnected plug does not have. NIST’s 2019 draft review reported particular weaknesses in some products it assessed, including an example involving weak encryption and missing authentication that could allow an attacker to send commands, and a separate firmware-related weakness. These are historical findings from a limited assessment—not evidence that all smart plugs are vulnerable or a measure of how common such flaws are today. NISTIR 8267 draft.

More broadly, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission discusses unauthorized access, malware, and failed software updates as potential hazards of connected products generally; it does not establish smart-plug-specific incident rates. CPSC’s 2022 report.
What reduces exposure
Look for clear update and security-support policies, and keep the device’s software current when updates are available. Network controls can also limit what an IoT device is allowed to communicate. NIST describes Manufacturer Usage Description (MUD) as a method for a network to allow communications a device needs for its intended function while blocking other traffic, when implemented. This does not mean a typical home router or any particular smart plug supports MUD. NIST SP 1800-15.

3. Support may end before the plug wears out
A smart plug can remain physically functional after its manufacturer stops providing security updates or other support. NCSC advises checking a device’s support period before buying and warns that out-of-support smart devices may become easier to hack or may stop working altogether. Its guidance puts the support date plainly: “Think of the support date as a ‘use by’ date for your device, so you’ll know how long it’s still safe to use.” NCSC: Smart devices in the home.

Support periods and update practices differ by model and manufacturer. Before choosing a plug, find its stated support period and update policy; if the end date is unclear, ask the manufacturer rather than assuming updates will continue indefinitely.

What to check before choosing a smart plug
- Network: Confirm required Wi-Fi or other network setup, and whether local control is explicitly documented.
- App and account: Check phone compatibility, app requirements, account setup, and any smart-home ecosystem dependencies.
- Updates and support: Look for the manufacturer’s support period, security-update policy, and any stated end-of-support date.
- Electrical suitability: Check the model’s official electrical rating and appliance compatibility for the equipment you intend to connect.
These checks are model-specific. The sources cited here do not establish universal smart-plug load limits, energy savings, reliability rates, or behavior during internet outages, so consult the official specifications rather than assuming one plug’s characteristics apply to another.
