Stablecoins are crypto assets designed to keep a relatively steady value against a reference asset, usually the U.S. dollar. Bitcoin is not. Bitcoin’s price is set by supply and demand in open markets, while a stablecoin depends on reserves, collateral, redemption arrangements, or an algorithm intended to hold its peg. “Stable” describes the design goal, not a guaranteed price or an unconditional right to receive cash.

That distinction affects what you can use each asset for, what can go wrong, and who you must trust. A dollar-linked stablecoin may be useful for moving value on a blockchain, but its reliability depends on the issuer or protocol, the quality and liquidity of backing assets, access to redemption, the blockchain and wallets involved, and the rules in your jurisdiction.

Stablecoins and Bitcoin at a glance

Question Stablecoin Bitcoin
Design objective Track a reference value, commonly one U.S. dollar. Operate as an unbacked crypto asset with no fixed fiat value.
What anchors the price? The reference asset plus reserves, collateral, redemption, or an algorithmic mechanism. Market supply and demand; there is no built-in promise to redeem one bitcoin for a set amount of currency.
Main dependencies Issuer and reserves for centralized designs; smart contracts, collateral and liquidation rules for crypto-backed designs; incentives and confidence for algorithmic designs. Network operation, custody, exchanges and continuing market demand.
Typical price behavior Usually close to its reference value, but it can trade above or below the intended peg. Can move substantially in either direction.
Key failure modes Depegging, restricted redemption, reserve losses or illiquidity, runs, operational problems and mechanism failure. Large price changes, custody loss, operational problems and market risks.

These are design-level distinctions, not a ranking or an investment recommendation. Individual tokens can differ materially.

What a stablecoin is

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Division of Corporation Finance defines a stablecoin as “a type of crypto asset designed to maintain a stable value relative to a reference asset, such as USD or another fiat currency, or a commodity like gold, or a pool or basket of assets.” The statement is available at SEC.gov and is a staff statement, not a Commission rule.

The reference can be a national currency, a commodity, or a basket. A token marketed as dollar-linked aims to remain near $1, but the token is not the dollar itself and is not automatically a bank deposit. Its value depends on the mechanism that connects the token to that reference and on users’ confidence that the connection will hold.

Stablecoins are issued or maintained in several ways. Some have a centralized issuer that holds off-chain assets. Others lock cryptocurrency in smart contracts. Algorithmic systems try to manage supply and incentives instead of relying on a conventional reserve. Hybrid designs combine these approaches. The label alone tells you very little about the protection a holder actually has.

How stablecoins try to hold a peg

Fiat or other off-chain reserves

In a reserve-backed model, an issuer holds assets intended to support the tokens in circulation. For the narrowly described category in its 2025 staff statement, the SEC gives examples of low-risk, readily liquid assets such as cash equivalents, demand deposits, U.S. Treasury securities and registered money-market funds. That description does not establish that every stablecoin uses those assets, that reserves are segregated in the same way, or that every holder can redeem directly.

The central questions are whether the reserves exist, who controls them, how quickly they could be converted to cash during stress, and whether the issuer’s redemption obligations match the number of tokens outstanding. A reserve can be sufficient in total but still difficult to liquidate quickly or accessible only to particular participants.

Crypto-collateralized stablecoins

Here, smart contracts hold cryptocurrency as collateral. Because the collateral itself changes price, the protocol generally requires more collateral than the value of tokens issued and uses automatic liquidation rules when collateral falls. The safety of the arrangement therefore depends on collateral quality, pricing oracles, code, governance, liquidation liquidity and the speed of a market crash.

Algorithmic supply mechanisms

Algorithmic designs seek to support a target price through supply adjustments, incentives or trading relationships rather than a conventional pool of redeemable assets. Their stability depends heavily on continued demand and confidence in the mechanism. The Federal Reserve warns that if linked assets fall together, an algorithmic system can enter a feedback loop sometimes called a “death spiral,” in which falling confidence causes more selling and further loss of the peg. The Federal Reserve’s explanation is at federalreserve.gov.

Hybrid structures

A hybrid may combine reserves with algorithmic adjustments or other collateral. “Hybrid” is not a safety rating. You still need to identify the actual collateral, the rules for issuing and destroying tokens, governance powers, and the legal and practical path to redemption.

Is a stablecoin always worth one dollar?

No. A dollar-linked stablecoin may trade close to $1, but a peg is not an unconditional cash guarantee for every holder. The secondary-market price can move away from the intended value when buyers and sellers are imbalanced, when markets or blockchains are congested, or when confidence in reserves or the mechanism weakens.

The SEC staff describes arrangements in which only designated intermediaries can redeem directly with the issuer. Other holders may have to sell on a secondary market, where the price can be below the intended redemption value and where fees, delays, trading limits or regional restrictions may apply. In the covered arrangements, eligible participants can help pull the market price toward the peg by minting and redeeming, but that explanation should not be generalized to every token.

Questions to answer before relying on a peg

  • Who is legally entitled to redeem, and is direct redemption available to an individual or only to approved institutions?
  • What asset or assets are held as backing, and are current disclosures independently attested or audited?
  • What minimum amount, fees, notice period, identity checks or geographic restrictions apply?
  • Which blockchain and trading venues support the token, and what happens if an exchange, wallet or bridge is unavailable?
  • Can the issuer freeze, blacklist or otherwise restrict particular addresses under its terms?

How Bitcoin differs

Bitcoin has no issuer promising to exchange each unit for a fixed amount of dollars. Its protocol defines how transactions are validated and how new coins are issued, but the market determines the fiat price. A person holding bitcoin therefore accepts price volatility as a basic feature rather than an exception.

Bitcoin still has dependencies: the network must operate, users need secure custody, and trading venues and payment providers affect access and liquidity. Those are different from the reserve and redemption dependencies of a centralized stablecoin. Losing a private key can make bitcoin inaccessible; a stablecoin holder can additionally face an issuer’s insolvency, a frozen address, a failed smart contract or a reserve shortfall.

Bitcoin and stablecoins can appear together in the same wallet or exchange account, but they serve different roles. Traders may use a stablecoin as a quote currency or temporary holding asset while using bitcoin for exposure to a volatile crypto asset. Neither role removes the underlying risks.

What people use stablecoins for

Crypto-market entry and exit

Stablecoins often function as on-ramps and off-ramps inside crypto markets. A user can exchange a volatile token for a dollar-linked token without immediately converting through a bank, then later trade or redeem if access is available. This convenience is operational, not a guarantee that the token is equivalent to insured cash.

Trading and collateral

Market participants use stablecoins to quote trades, settle between platforms and post collateral in decentralized or centralized systems. Collateral can be liquidated quickly when prices move, so smart-contract rules, exchange solvency and the token’s own liquidity all matter.

Transfers and cross-border payments

The Bank for International Settlements describes possible cross-border payment uses, but it cautions against treating all on-chain transaction volume as payments. A blockchain transfer may represent trading, collateral movement, internal exchange activity or automated contracts rather than a purchase by an end user. Real-world usefulness depends on wallet access, local on- and off-ramps, network fees, currency conversion, compliance checks and whether the recipient can use or redeem the token.

How large is the stablecoin market?

Different institutions publish slightly different estimates because they use different dates, token coverage and measurement methods.

Measure Figure and date How to interpret it
Aggregate market capitalization About $317 billion on April 6, 2026, according to a Federal Reserve note. The note describes this as more than 50% growth since early 2025; it is a dated estimate, not a permanent total.
Global market capitalization About $315 billion in early April 2026, according to the BIS. This is a separate, close estimate from a different source and reference date.
All stablecoin transaction volume About $35 trillion during 2025, according to the BIS. This broad figure includes activity that is not necessarily consumer or merchant payments.
Payment-related flows About $390 billion during 2025, according to the BIS. The BIS discusses this separately from overall transaction volume; the two figures are not interchangeable.

The BIS discussion is at bis.org. The Federal Reserve’s 2026 market note is at federalreserve.gov.

What reserve disclosures can and cannot show

The Federal Reserve’s note reports, from issuer attestations, approximately 1.04 times reserves per USDT in circulation, with about 0.74 times in assets it characterizes as higher-quality reserves, and approximately 1.0 times higher-quality reserve backing for USDC. These are figures reported in that note, not independent real-time verification, and they can change as holdings and token supply change. Reserve quality, maturity, custody and liquidity matter more than a single headline ratio.

Main risks, explained in practical terms

Reserve and liquidity risk

Backing assets can lose value, become difficult to sell, or be held by a counterparty that fails. A token can therefore trade below its target even when a disclosure claims substantial reserves.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Redemption and run risk

If many holders seek cash at once, an issuer or intermediary may face a liquidity squeeze. Doubts about reserves can trigger more selling, which reinforces the loss of confidence. Direct redemption limits can leave ordinary holders dependent on a stressed secondary market.

Protocol and oracle risk

Crypto-backed and algorithmic systems rely on smart-contract code, governance and price feeds. A software bug, manipulated oracle, delayed liquidation or governance decision can impair the mechanism even when markets are functioning normally.

Operational and interconnected risk

Wallets, exchanges, payment processors, blockchains, bridges and traditional financial institutions create several points of failure. An outage or restriction at one service can prevent a user from moving or redeeming tokens. Interconnections can also transmit stress between crypto markets and financial firms, a concern discussed by the Federal Reserve.

Jurisdiction and access risk

Availability, identity requirements, taxes, consumer protections and legal treatment depend on the user’s country, the token and the service provider. A statement about U.S. rules should not be read as a worldwide rule.

A due-diligence checklist before using one

  1. Identify the exact token and network. Confirm the contract address, supported chain, issuer and whether you are using an official version rather than a similarly named asset.
  2. Read redemption terms. Find the eligible customer category, minimums, fees, processing times, identification requirements and any suspension or freeze powers.
  3. Examine backing disclosures. Look for the asset types, maturity, custody arrangements, liabilities and the date and scope of any attestation.
  4. Check liquidity where you will trade. A token can be near $1 on one venue and discounted on another. Review spreads, withdrawal limits and network fees before transferring a large amount.
  5. Plan custody and recovery. Protect wallet keys, verify addresses and understand whether a loss, freeze or mistaken transfer can be reversed.
  6. Limit concentration. Do not treat a stablecoin balance as identical to insured bank cash unless the applicable law and account structure actually provide that protection.
  7. Confirm local eligibility. Check current rules and service availability for your residence, tax status and intended use.

U.S. regulatory context

The SEC Division of Corporation Finance’s April 4, 2025 statement describes a staff view for certain U.S.-dollar stablecoins designed for one-for-one value and redemption and backed by low-risk, readily liquid reserves at least equal to outstanding redemption value. In the circumstances it outlines, the staff says the offer and sale do not involve securities. The statement has no legal force or effect and does not address every stablecoin category; it expressly leaves out, among others, algorithmic, commodity-referenced, non-dollar and yield-bearing designs. Read the statement at SEC.gov.

The GENIUS Act is another current U.S. development. The Federal Reserve says it was signed into law on July 18, 2025. An SEC FAQ states that the Act takes effect on the earlier of January 18, 2027, or 120 days after federal banking regulators issue implementing regulations. Because that formula depends on rulemaking, check the latest official status before relying on a compliance date. The FAQ is available at SEC.gov.

These materials describe U.S. staff views and legislation; they do not create a universal guarantee, and they do not determine how a token is treated in another country.

Which asset fits which job?

If your goal is… What the distinction means
Holding an asset whose dollar value should fluctuate substantially Bitcoin is designed as an unpegged crypto asset, so price movement is expected.
Moving a blockchain-denominated amount intended to stay near a currency value A stablecoin may be more convenient, but verify redemption, liquidity and network support first.
Using collateral in a trading or decentralized-finance application Review liquidation rules, smart-contract risk, platform solvency and the stablecoin’s own peg history.
Keeping emergency savings or guaranteed cash Do not assume a stablecoin substitutes for an insured deposit or a direct claim on government currency.
Sending money across borders Compare total fees, conversion spreads, compliance checks, recipient access and the practical ability to cash out.

The bottom line

A stablecoin is a crypto asset with a stability target; Bitcoin is a crypto asset with no fixed-value target. Stablecoins can reduce exchange-rate movement inside blockchain markets, but they replace Bitcoin’s direct market exposure with dependencies on reserves, issuers, collateral, code, intermediaries and redemption access. Before treating any stablecoin as dollars, identify exactly who can redeem it, what backs it, where it trades and what happens under stress.
