Sprites are small Fortnite helpers that you find and equip during a match to receive a special Sprite Power. In the original Chapter 6 system, Air, Water and Earth Sprites offered different ways to move, heal, or exchange items. Sprite Shrines added persistent Boons such as faster reloads or elimination tracking.
The system is seasonal rather than permanent. Fortnite Runners later added Sprite extraction and a collection that can carry certain powers into future matches, while competitive playlists may exclude Sprites altogether. Treat every ability, spawn rule and playlist restriction as season-specific and check the current patch or in-game description before relying on one.

What Sprites are in Fortnite
Epic Support describes Sprites as “little helpers on the battlefield.” They are match objects that a player can locate and equip. Equipping one grants a Sprite Power, which is a usable ability associated with that Sprite type.

Their behavior depends on the season, the mode and, in some cases, whether you are using the original island mechanic or a later Fortnite Runners collection system. In the foundational Chapter 6 implementation, players interacted with three types:
- Air Sprite: creates an updraft vortex for movement and disruption.
- Water Sprite: creates a healing fountain.
- Earth Sprite: accepts offered items and returns a reward.
Epic also says Sprites can be leveled by exploring, getting eliminations and surviving the Storm. The available progression and its rewards are tied to the season that introduced the Sprite system; do not assume that a level, requirement or reward carries into a later season.
How the Sprite gameplay loop works
- Find a Sprite during the match. Sprites are discovered while exploring the island. The exact availability and placement can change with the active season, so an old map or guide may be out of date.
- Equip it. Equipping the Sprite is what grants its Sprite Power. Simply seeing one on the ground does not give you the ability.
- Use the power according to its type. Air and Water are thrown to activate their battlefield effects, while Earth is used by feeding it eligible items. A Sprite can also be taken to a Sprite Shrine for a Boon.
- Progress it through play. Epic identifies exploration, eliminations and surviving the Storm as activities that can level Sprites in the systems that support leveling.
- Plan for elimination. If you are eliminated before banking a Sprite, Epic says it can remain on the battlefield for another player to pick up. That makes an unbanked Sprite a possible resource for the opponent who reaches your location.
“Banking” is important because it distinguishes a Sprite you are still carrying in the current match from a power that has been permanently added to a collection. The original match-based system should not be treated as an automatic account-wide inventory.

Air, Water and Earth Sprites compared
| Sprite | Primary effect | Activation | Team utility | Mobility or combat value | Season and mode qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Air | Creates an updraft wind vortex | Throw the Sprite | Can reposition nearby players and disrupt structures or vehicles | Launches a player with glider redeploy, damages builds and launches vehicles | Foundational Chapter 6 type; availability can change by season and playlist |
| Water | Creates a healing fountain that restores health and shields to nearby players | Throw the Sprite | Supports nearby teammates who can remain within the fountain’s area | Primarily defensive and sustain-oriented rather than a damage tool | Foundational Chapter 6 type; availability can change by season and playlist |
| Earth | Trades offered items for a reward | Feed the Sprite eligible items | Can convert surplus or unwanted items into a shared loot opportunity | Indirect combat value through the reward received | Foundational Chapter 6 type; later Creative versions use creator-configured rules |
Air Sprite: movement and disruption
Throwing an Air Sprite creates an updraft wind vortex. The vortex can launch a player while glider redeploy is available, damage builds and launch vehicles. Its value is therefore broader than simple travel: it can open a movement route, interfere with an opponent’s structure or move a vehicle unexpectedly.
Use it when vertical repositioning or a fast escape matters more than holding the Sprite for a shrine. Because the vortex can affect builds and vehicles, activate it with awareness of teammates, cover and your intended landing area.
Water Sprite: a local recovery point
A Water Sprite creates a healing fountain that restores health and shields to nearby players. The effect rewards a squad that can hold a location briefly, recover after a fight or stabilize before rotating.

The fountain is proximity-based, so teammates need to be close enough to benefit. It is not a remote heal and does not turn the entire squad invulnerable. Treat the activation site as a temporary support position that can also attract enemies.
Earth Sprite: exchange items for a reward
An Earth Sprite is an exchange mechanic rather than a direct attack or movement ability. Feed it items and it trades them for a reward. The practical decision is whether the offered items are less valuable to your squad than the chance of the returned loot.
Do not assume that every Earth Sprite accepts every item or produces the same reward in every mode. The original island rules are season-specific, and Creative islands can use a configurable Earth Sprite device with different registered items and reward settings.
Sprite Shrines and Sprite Boons
Taking a Sprite to a Sprite Shrine revitalizes the shrine and grants a Boon. A Boon is a persistent gameplay effect, so it differs from a one-time Air vortex, Water fountain or Earth exchange. The exact shrine interaction and the list of available Boons can change, but Epic’s Chapter 6 feature documentation identifies four effects.
| Boon | Effect | Best-fit use |
|---|---|---|
| Fire Boon | Reloads weapons faster | Gunfights in which downtime between magazines is dangerous |
| Void Boon | Reveals nearby players after an elimination | Following a knock or elimination to locate the next nearby threat |
| Wind Boon | Increases movement speed while the pickaxe is equipped | Rotations, repositioning and travel when you are not holding a weapon |
| Water Boon | Grants health and shields while swimming to you and nearby swimming squadmates | Squad rotations that use water and allow several players to swim together |
The shrine choice creates a trade-off: using the Sprite immediately gives its active power, while delivering it to a shrine exchanges that immediate interaction for a longer-lasting benefit. Choose based on the next encounter, not on a universal ranking. A Water Boon is useful only when swimming is part of the route, and a Wind Boon requires the pickaxe to be equipped.
What changed with Fortnite Runners
Epic’s June 5, 2026 Fortnite Runners article describes a later Sprite system in which new abilities were spread across the island. The examples include powers that wrap players in shields, grant temporary invisibility or provide bonus burst damage. These are examples of Runners-era abilities, not replacements that should be assumed to exist in every Fortnite season.

- Heroes - play as four hero classes, each with thousands of variations to recruit and unlock.
- Skill tree/RPG - points put into the skill tree allow you to unlock new hero abilities, upgrade weapons, Boost your team health, and more.
- Enemies - defend yourself against hordes of monsters that come from the mysterious Storm.
- Building System - The revolutionary building system allows you to quickly build structures while also juggling frenetic combat.
- Schematics/Crafting - Use the resources you find in the world to craft weapons, traps, health packs, and more.
Runners adds an extraction and collection layer:
- Find a Sprite with a Runners ability.
- Extract it rather than treating it only as a temporary match interaction.
- Add it to your collection.
- Use the collection to bring that power into future matches, where the current rules allow it.
This is the clearest case in which a Sprite can affect a later match. The collection system is distinct from carrying an unbanked Sprite around the current island. A player eliminated before completing the relevant extraction does not automatically gain future-match access just because the Sprite was nearby.
Can you keep a Sprite for the next match?
Usually, you should separate three different meanings of “keep.”
- Carry it during the current match: You can equip or transport a Sprite until you use it, take it to a shrine or lose it through elimination.
- Leave it for another player: If you are eliminated before banking a Sprite, Epic says it can remain on the battlefield for another player to pick up.
- Save its power for future matches: Fortnite Runners introduced extraction and a collection that can bring certain Sprite powers into future matches.
Therefore, a classic Air, Water or Earth interaction should not be described as permanent account progress unless the active season explicitly provides that feature. Future-match access belongs to the Runners collection rules, and those rules can be retired or revised.
Where to find Sprites and Sprite Shrines
Sprites are found through island exploration, but the supplied Epic descriptions do not establish one permanent set of coordinates that applies across seasons. Spawn locations, shrine placement and even the existence of a particular Sprite type can change with a patch.
For a current match, use the information presented by the live game rather than relying on a Chapter 6 map:
- Explore early enough to find a Sprite before a rotation or fight makes the search impractical.
- Read the interaction prompt so you know whether you are equipping, throwing, feeding or delivering the object.
- Keep the route to a shrine in mind before committing a Sprite to an immediate activation.
- Expect other players to contest a useful Sprite or shrine, especially after a fight reveals your position.
If a guide gives exact locations but does not identify the season and patch, treat those coordinates as historical information, not a guarantee for your current lobby.

Are Sprites available in ranked or competitive Fortnite?
Epic Support states that Sprites are not available in competitive modes. That means a mechanic present in a public Battle Royale playlist may be absent from Ranked or an esports-oriented ruleset.
Recommended Free Tools
Playlist rules can be changed independently of the core island feature. Before planning a ranked strategy around a Sprite, check the current mode description, patch notes or in-game item availability. Do not infer availability from a casual-match video or from an older season.
Sprites in Creative mode
Creative uses a separate Earth Sprite device that island creators can place and configure. Epic’s Creative documentation describes an interaction in which players exchange registered items, weapons or loot and receive rewards selected by the creator.
Creators can configure:
- whether the device is enabled;
- the grant timer; and
- a trade limit.
Because those settings belong to the island, an Earth Sprite in Creative may not behave like the standard Battle Royale Earth Sprite. A player should read the island’s instructions or interaction prompt before offering an item, while a creator should test the registered inputs, reward pool and trade limit as part of the island’s rules.

Assuming every Sprite has the same effect
Air, Water and Earth use different interactions, and Runners adds further abilities. Identify the type first; equipping a Sprite does not tell you that it will heal, launch or trade.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

A Sprite Power comes from equipping a Sprite. A Boon comes from bringing a Sprite to a Sprite Shrine. They are related systems but not interchangeable, and choosing one can mean giving up the other opportunity.

Expecting a Boon to work without its condition
Wind requires the pickaxe to be equipped, Water requires swimming, and Void triggers its reveal after an elimination. Fire improves reload speed rather than increasing weapon damage. Match your plan to the stated trigger.
Using old season information
Epic has described Sprite systems as seasonal. A Chapter 6 explanation, a Runners collection guide and a current playlist can all describe different rules. Confirm the season name, mode and patch attached to any claim about locations or abilities.
Assuming elimination preserves your progress
An unbanked Sprite can remain on the battlefield for another player, while Runners extraction is the mechanism that can add a power to a future-match collection. Those outcomes are not the same.
Why the system keeps changing
Epic’s current support notice says Sprites collected in Season 3: Runners are being immortalized in a “Sprite Garden” for Chapter 7 Season 4. That wording shows the system can persist as a theme while its implementation changes between seasons. A Sprite displayed in a garden, a Sprite used as a live ability and a Sprite stored in a collection may serve different gameplay purposes.
For an accurate answer at any later date, verify four labels together: the chapter and season, the playlist, the Sprite type and whether the feature is an island interaction, a shrine Boon or a Runners collection power. That combination prevents a historical ability from being presented as a permanent Fortnite rule.
The practical answer
Sprites are equipable Fortnite helpers that grant powers, with Air providing an updraft, Water creating a healing fountain and Earth exchanging items for rewards in the original Chapter 6 model. Bringing one to a Sprite Shrine can produce a persistent Boon such as faster reloads, post-elimination tracking, pickaxe movement speed or swimming-based health and shields. Fortnite Runners expanded the idea by allowing certain Sprites to be extracted into a collection for future matches.
Use the live season and playlist as the final authority. Sprites may be absent from competitive modes, their locations and abilities may change, and a current Runners feature should not be projected backward onto every classic Sprite interaction.
