In RuneScape: Dragonwilds, a Saga is a complete story arc with a beginning, middle and ending. It is delivered through connected quests, regions, enemies, bosses, rewards and progression systems rather than as one isolated patch. The first arc, the Kuldra Saga, reaches its narrative endpoint in the Scorned Wilderness raid, but that ending does not conclude the wider Ashenfall story or the game’s future.
Version 1.0 in September 2026 completed Kuldra’s story. Jagex has announced Luminance as a December 2026 prelude, the Blood Crystal Saga beginning in 2027, and The Plundered Gods Saga beginning in 2028. Those later items are roadmap announcements, so their presence and timing should be understood as planned content rather than already released features.
What “Saga” means in Dragonwilds
The word Saga describes the shape of the narrative, not a separate game mode, character class or menu-based campaign. A Saga gathers several releases into one arc that develops a conflict over time and then resolves it. In practical terms, players experience a Saga by exploring new parts of Ashenfall, completing linked quests, defeating stronger enemies and bosses, collecting materials, crafting or earning equipment, and developing skills that let them survive the next stage.

A story arc, not a single update
An individual update can add a region, quest line, boss, skill or quality-of-life feature. A Saga connects those additions to a larger dramatic purpose. Jagex’s description of Kuldra presents it as a tale with a beginning, middle and end. That means a player can identify the arc’s central threat, see it expand through successive releases and reach a deliberate confrontation, even though the content arrives over many updates.

How progression is embedded in the story
Dragonwilds does not present progression as a detached numbered campaign that every player must follow in one rigid order. Instead, story and character growth advance together. A new area supplies new encounters and resources; those resources support new gear or crafting options; the resulting capabilities open further exploration and quests. The exact order in which an individual player improves every skill or obtains each item is not established by the official announcements, so it is more accurate to describe a connected structure than a mandatory equipment checklist.
How the Kuldra Saga unfolded
The Kuldra arc began with Early Access in April 2025. During that period, Jagex described additional territories as stages in the same continuing story. The completed release sequence recorded for the 1.0 launch is:

Earlier roadmap communication highlighted Dowdun Reach, Umbral Sands and Scorned Wilderness as forthcoming stages. The later September launch announcement is the authoritative account of what actually shipped, and it places all four named regions in the completed sequence. Roadmap descriptions are useful for understanding the intended progression, but the launch announcement should be used when distinguishing plans from released content.
Quests, encounters and resources move together
Each regional expansion was designed to add more than scenery. Jagex tied the new territories to quests and encounters, while also adding materials, gear and skill content. That combination is why a Saga feels like progression rather than a sequence of disconnected story scenes: the world becomes larger, the threats become more demanding and the player’s toolkit grows in response.

Skill-cap and retroactive progression plans
In a January 2026 update, Jagex said the skill level cap would rise to 99 and that existing skills would receive retroactive content in future updates. This statement explains the direction of progression during the Kuldra era, but it does not establish that every skill changed at the same time or that every player followed an identical level path. Treat the cap and retroactive additions as system-level plans associated with the evolving game, not as a universal step-by-step build order.
Is the Kuldra Saga over?
Yes. The Kuldra Saga concluded when players entered the Scorned Wilderness raid and defeated Kuldra at the version 1.0 launch in September 2026. In a July 31, 2026 developer update, Mod Dutch described shipping version 1.0 as the milestone that “concludes the Kuldra Saga with the players going into the Scorned Wilderness raid and defeating her.” The September 15 launch announcement then confirmed that Scorned Wilderness brought the opening core narrative to its conclusion.
This is a conclusion to Kuldra’s arc, not a statement that the raid or the entire game becomes unavailable. It identifies the narrative endpoint of the first major storyline and the point at which Dragonwilds moves toward a new chapter.

Does Dragonwilds end after the Scorned Wilderness raid?
No. The end of one Saga and the end of the game are different things. Jagex has described Ashenfall’s unexplained place in the wider world as a multi-year story journey. Defeating Kuldra resolves the first central threat while leaving the setting, its mysteries and its inhabitants available for additional arcs.

Jesse America, executive producer for RuneScape: Dragonwilds, said at the September 15, 2026 launch, “It’s the culmination of months of working towards bringing the game to millions of new players, and we’re only really getting started.” The statement fits the release structure: version 1.0 marks a major milestone, while the narrative roadmap continues beyond it.
Released content versus announced future content
The most important distinction when reading the roadmap is whether a feature is confirmed as shipped or announced for later. The following timeline separates those categories.

What is Luminance?
Luminance is scheduled for December 2026 and is described as a prelude to the Blood Crystal Saga rather than a separate long-term Saga. Its announced features include elves, elven-themed options for character and building customization, and the Prayer skill.

What is the Blood Crystal Saga?
The Blood Crystal Saga is the next major story arc announced by Jagex, beginning in 2027 with Song of Rebellion. The announced content gives the Saga a clear progression framework:
- New creatures: Moss Giants, Kebbits and Implings.
- New skill: Hunter.
- World expansion: new areas connected to the Blood Crystal storyline.
- Story content: quests beginning with Song of Rebellion.
- Equipment and housing: new gear and Prifddinas-inspired house decorations.
Jagex also announced a two-level update cadence for 2027. Quarterly updates are planned to include larger additions such as skills, including Hunter and Slayer. Monthly updates are planned to add side quests, weapons, decorations and quality-of-life improvements. “Quarterly” and “monthly” describe the intended cadence; they do not establish a guaranteed date for any particular item.
Official modding in the 2027 plan
The same announcement includes official modding through a CurseForge partnership. Jagex says the plan includes creation tools plus an in-game mod browser and installer across platforms, including console. This is a future platform feature in the announcement, not a tool that should be assumed to be available with the Kuldra-era release.

The Plundered Gods Saga is the named story arc that Jagex says will begin in 2028, after the Blood Crystal Saga. At the time of the October 5, 2026 announcement, Jagex had confirmed the name and starting year but had not published a comparable feature list of regions, skills, bosses or quests. The useful conclusion is that the Ashenfall narrative is planned to continue beyond Blood Crystal, while detailed gameplay information remains to be announced.

How progression works between regions
Players should think of regional progression as a loop rather than a single ladder:
- Enter a new part of Ashenfall. A region adds places to explore and hazards that were not present in earlier stages.
- Follow its quests and encounters. Narrative objectives introduce the local conflict and point toward stronger enemies or a regional boss.
- Gather the materials the area provides. New resources support crafting, construction or other forms of preparation.
- Improve gear and skills. Equipment and skill content expand the situations a character can handle, including more dangerous fights and deeper exploration.
- Use the new capabilities to reach the next stage. The resulting progression carries the player toward later regions and, in the Kuldra arc, the Scorned Wilderness raid.
This model explains why the story cannot be separated cleanly from mechanics. A quest may introduce a threat, a new material may make the threat manageable, and a boss may provide the reward or narrative turn that points toward the next region. The official material does not prescribe one exact gear sequence, so players retain flexibility in how they prepare.
What the roadmap means for players starting now
If you want a completed story arc
Version 1.0 provides a defined Kuldra-era endpoint: progress through the released regions and reach the Scorned Wilderness raid. The arc can be understood as complete even though future Sagas will add more of Ashenfall’s story.
If you are waiting for future progression
The next clearly named milestones are Luminance in December 2026 and the Blood Crystal Saga in 2027. Expect the latter to expand the world with Hunter, new creatures, quests, areas, gear and decorations, but do not treat the announcement as a detailed launch schedule.
If platform availability matters
Jagex announced physical Standard and Deluxe editions for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S for the fourth quarter of 2026. Edition and retail availability can vary by territory, so the announcement should not be read as confirmation that every version is sold in every region.
Why the Kuldra ending matters for the larger setting
Kuldra’s defeat gives Dragonwilds a closed first chapter while preserving unanswered questions about Ashenfall’s place in the wider world. That balance is deliberate: players receive the payoff of a complete conflict, yet the setting remains capable of supporting additional regions, skills, enemies, bosses and rewards. Jagex’s multi-year framing therefore describes continuity rather than an endless extension of the same boss storyline.
For context, Jagex reported one million sales in its January 29, 2026 announcement. That figure indicates the game had reached a substantial audience, but it is not a statistic about Saga completion, player reception or demand for future content. No official metric identified a completion rate or popularity measure for the Sagas themselves.
