Riven Mods are weapon mods with hidden statistics. You first reveal a Riven’s challenge, complete that challenge to unveil its stats, and then decide whether to keep or reroll the result with Kuva. The strength of the possible stats is adjusted by the weapon’s Riven Disposition, while Update 44 adds optional Trait Locking for more controlled—but more expensive—cycles.
The important distinction is that an un-equipped Riven can remain indistinct and slot-free. Equipping it reveals the challenge and uses a Riven slot; completing the challenge exposes the mod’s weapon and stat package.
What a Riven Mod does
A Riven is a randomized mod tied to a weapon type or a specific weapon. Unlike an ordinary mod, its final positive and negative traits are not visible when you obtain it. The hidden challenge determines when the mod can be unveiled; after completion, the Riven displays its generated stat package and can be cycled with Kuva.
Rivens are not automatically better than standard weapon mods. Their value depends on the weapon, its current Disposition, the traits generated, any negative trade-off, and whether those traits fit the build you actually use. A theoretically large number can be less useful than a smaller bonus that supports your weapon’s critical, status, damage, or other build priorities.

Digital Extremes’ Update 44 notes describe three practical states: indistinct, veiled, and unveiled. All three states are described as tradeable, but only an indistinct Riven remains outside your slot inventory until you equip it.
The three Riven states

Receiving an indistinct Riven therefore does not immediately activate a hidden challenge or consume capacity. The transition happens when you equip it. That distinction matters if your Riven inventory is full or if you want to trade an unopened item before committing a slot.
How to unveil a Riven
- Receive the indistinct Riven. It may come from a reward or a vendor; the documented examples include Palladino, but the official notes do not constitute a complete, permanent list of every acquisition route.
- Equip the Riven. The game changes it from indistinct to veiled, reveals the challenge text, and assigns the item to a Riven slot.
- Read every condition before starting. The challenge is the gate to unveiling. Make sure you understand the required mission, weapon, enemy, or restriction shown in your own game client; conditions can vary by Riven.
- Complete the challenge. Once the requirement is met, the mod becomes unveiled and its randomized stat package is displayed.
- Inspect the result before spending resources. Check the weapon association, each positive trait, the negative trait if present, and the number of traits. You can use the unveiled Riven immediately or decide whether cycling is worthwhile.
The sources establish the state transition and slot behavior, but not a single exhaustive list of challenge prerequisites. Treat the challenge displayed in your client as authoritative rather than relying on an old checklist that may omit newer conditions.

Why the same kind of Riven can roll differently
When a Riven is unveiled, the game generates a variable package of traits for its associated weapon. The resulting positives and negative are not selected from a universal fixed value that applies equally to every weapon. The weapon’s Riven Disposition influences the power range.

What Riven Disposition means
Digital Extremes originally described Disposition as an adjustment intended to give less-used weapons more powerful Riven possibilities than heavily used weapons. It is weapon-specific, not a permanent quality rating for every Riven, and it can change over time as weapon usage and balance decisions change.
Update 44 states that Disposition numbers are updated with each Prime Access round. Consequently, a value copied from an old build guide may no longer be current. If you are evaluating a Riven for a named weapon, check that weapon’s present Disposition in the game or in current official information instead of assuming an historical value still applies.
How to judge a stat package
- Match the traits to your build. A bonus is useful only if it improves the way you deal damage or solve the weapon’s actual weakness.
- Account for the negative. A drawback can be acceptable when it affects a stat your build does not need, but it can erase the benefit if it cuts a core capability.
- Consider the weapon’s role. The right combination for a critical-focused weapon is not automatically right for a status-focused or utility weapon.
- Check the trait count. Trait Locking interacts with the number of traits that can appear during a cycle, so count matters when planning rerolls.
There is no universally optimal Riven roll established by the official explanations. The best result is conditional on the particular weapon, its current Disposition, and your intended build.
How Kuva cycling works
Cycling, also called rerolling, replaces the current unveiled stat result with a newly generated result by spending Kuva. The process does not make the mod veiled again. You are changing the visible traits on an unveiled Riven, not repeating the unveiling challenge.

- Open the unveiled Riven’s cycling screen. Only an unveiled Riven can be cycled.
- Review the proposed result. The interface shows the new trait package before you commit.
- Accept or decline. The documented cycling behavior lets you keep the existing result by declining or replace it by accepting.
- Repeat only with a budget and a target. Each accepted cycle consumes Kuva. Decide in advance which traits or combinations would be an improvement, and stop when the expected gain no longer justifies the cost.
The older official notes document the accept-or-decline behavior but their cost schedule is historical. Do not treat those old figures as today’s baseline or escalation prices. Update 44 includes a user-interface screenshot showing “Cycle for 3,500 Kuva”; that is an illustrative value in the screenshot, not a guaranteed universal price for every Riven or every cycle.
Trait Locking in Update 44
Update 44 makes it possible to lock one trait while cycling. The locked stat is frozen until you remove the lock or close the cycling menu. This is useful when one part of a Riven is already valuable and you want to search for a better companion trait without risking that stat in the same cycle.
Rules for a lock
- Only one trait can be locked at a time.
- Applying the lock is free.
- You can remove and reapply the lock freely while the cycling menu remains open.
- Closing the cycling menu clears the lock; you must apply it again when you reopen the menu.
- A cycle made with a locked trait costs twice as much Kuva as the corresponding unlocked cycle.
- The lock also constrains the number of traits on the resulting Riven. If you want a different trait count, unlock every trait before cycling.
For example, locking a strong positive while searching for a replacement negative preserves that positive, but it doubles the Kuva charge for the attempt and prevents the locked setup from changing its trait count. Treat the feature as a resource-for-control trade-off, not as a free safety net.

Riven Splicing: announced, not assumed live
Update 44 describes Riven Splicing as later content associated with Glacial Defiance. The planned system combines two traits into a new spliced trait, and that resulting trait is locked without consuming a normal Trait Lock. The notes say Riven Splicers would be earned from Glacial Defiance.

The same notes gave Glacial Defiance an expected release window before or on October 15, 2026, but that statement was forward-looking when written. Confirm the feature’s current live status in the latest official game notes or in your client before planning a build around Splicing. Do not assume that an announced system is available merely because it appears in Update 44 documentation.
Acquisition, trading, and slot planning
Official documentation identifies rewards and vendors, including Palladino, as acquisition examples, but it does not provide a complete, permanently valid route list in the material available here. If you are looking for a particular acquisition method, verify the current activity or vendor requirements separately rather than treating one example as exhaustive.
All three Riven states are described as tradeable. The practical inventory issue is timing: an indistinct Riven can remain slot-free while unequipped, whereas equipping it reveals the challenge and consumes a slot. If you have no spare capacity, leave a new Riven indistinct until you decide whether to unveil it, trade it, or make room.
How to compare two Rivens
Compare Rivens against the weapon and build, not against a single universal “best roll.” Use this checklist:

Common mistakes and fixes
“I received a Riven, but no challenge appeared.”
Check whether it is still indistinct. Equip it to trigger the transition to veiled and reveal the challenge. Receiving it alone does not expose the requirement.
“Equipping the Riven used a slot unexpectedly.”
That is the documented behavior: the slot is consumed when the indistinct item is equipped. Trade or leave it unequipped if you are not ready to allocate capacity.
“I cycled the Riven and lost the unveiling challenge.”
Cycling applies only after unveiling and does not veil the mod again. The challenge is not repeated when you reroll stats.

Locks do not persist after the cycling menu is closed. Reopen the menu and apply the lock again before cycling.
“The locked cycle costs much more Kuva.”
That is intentional. Update 44 doubles the Kuva cost whenever a trait is locked. Remove the lock if preserving that stat is not worth the premium.
“The reroll changed the number of traits.”
A locked trait constrains trait count. Unlock all traits before cycling if changing the number of traits is part of your goal.
“An old guide says this weapon has a different Disposition.”
Disposition is updated periodically, with Update 44 tying updates to Prime Access rounds. Verify the current value instead of relying on a historical guide.

A practical decision sequence
- Reserve a slot only when ready. Keep new indistinct Rivens unequipped while you decide.
- Unveil before judging. The weapon and traits cannot be assessed until the challenge is complete.
- Compare the whole package. Include positives, negative, trait count, weapon Disposition, and your intended build.
- Set a Kuva limit. Decide how many ordinary cycles you can afford before using a lock.
- Lock selectively. Use Trait Locking only when preserving one trait justifies twice the normal cycle cost.
- Recheck live notes for new systems. In particular, verify whether Riven Splicing has actually launched before expecting to use it.
