A regium bond is a close-shell interaction in which a coinage-metal center—copper, silver, or gold—acts as an electron-accepting partner for an electron donor, often a Lewis base. The term was introduced in research on metal nanoparticles, but later work has also examined regium bonding in discrete molecular structures. It describes a particular kind of interaction, not every contact involving one of these metals.

How a regium bond forms

The central idea is that a coinage-metal site can have an uneven distribution of electrostatic potential. In the σ-hole picture used in the foundational nanoparticle study, polarization leaves a region of positive potential on the metal. An electron-rich donor, such as a Lewis base, can be attracted to that region. The interaction is described as close-shell, but its detailed character depends on the atoms and molecular environment involved.

The same surface analysis also discusses σ-lumps, regions of enhanced electron density. These complementary features help explain why interactions at a metal surface depend on the direction and local electronic environment of an approaching molecule. The σ-hole model is a useful way to describe the proposed interaction; it should not be treated as a complete account of every system called a regium bond.

Why it is compared with hydrogen and halogen bonding

Regium bonding is often introduced by analogy with hydrogen and halogen bonding: in each case, an electron donor is attracted to an electrophilic region. The identity of that region differs—coinage-metal center for a regium bond, hydrogen for a hydrogen bond, and a halogen atom for a halogen bond. The analogy is a guide to the electrostatic picture, not a claim that the interactions are identical in all physical details.

Regium bond Coinage-metal center such as Cu, Ag, or Au Nanoparticle surface or molecular/crystal complex Strength and covalent contribution depend on the specific system.
Hydrogen bond Hydrogen center Commonly discussed in molecular interactions The analogy does not make its physical details identical to regium bonding.
Halogen bond Halogen center Commonly discussed in molecular interactions Like a regium bond, it can be described using anisotropic electrostatic potential.

Where the term came from—and where it is used

Nanoparticle research

Joakim Halldin Stenlid, Adam Johannes Johansson, and Tore Brinck introduced the term in a 2018 computational study of copper, silver, and gold nanoparticle clusters and their interactions with probe molecules. KTH’s profile dates the introduction to 2017, while the foundational paper was published in 2018. The authors proposed the concept as a way to reason about interactions relevant to heterogeneous catalysis; that proposal is not evidence that a particular catalyst was improved or commercially deployed. Read the foundational paper in Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics.

Molecular and crystal structures

The term is not limited to nanoparticle surfaces. A 2020 study reported the synthesis and X-ray characterization of a trichlorido(1-hexylcytosine)gold(III) complex and analyzed regium-bonding interactions in its structure. This is a structural example, rather than proof of a general catalytic application. See the 2020 gold-complex study.

Later literature may use “coinage bond” or “coinage-metal bond” for related terminology. A 2023 paper, for example, uses “coinage bonds” and “regium bonds” synonymously for close-shell interactions between an electron-deficient coinage atom and a nucleophilic Lewis-base center. Naming conventions are not fully settled across the field. See the 2023 terminology example.

How strong are regium bonds?

There is no universal strength that can be assigned to every regium bond. For one selected set of computational model complexes—MR species with M = Cu, Ag, or Au and R = Me, Cl, or CN interacting with methyl donors from BeMe₂, MgMe₂, or MeMgCl—Zhou, Wang, Li, and Scheiner reported calculated interaction energies from −13 to −72 kcal/mol in a study published online in 2025. Those values belong to those modeled systems, not to regium bonds as a whole. The authors describe substantial covalent contributions in the strongest Au-containing cases, including an approximately trigonal-bipyramidal pentacoordinate carbon. This example also shows why “close-shell” should not be read as “purely noncovalent under all conditions.” The balance between electrostatic attraction and covalent contribution can vary with the metal, attached groups, and donor. The reported energies are calculations for particular complexes, not a general experimental scale.

What the term does—and does not—tell you

  • It identifies an interaction category: a coinage-metal center interacting with an electron donor, often a Lewis base.
  • It suggests a useful electrostatic picture: a positive σ-hole can attract a donor, though that model does not explain every system in full.
  • It does not classify every metal contact: the local structure and electronic context matter.
  • It does not establish a universal bond strength or practical outcome: calculations and structural examples support specific claims about specific systems.
