Quantum vortices are narrow, quantized tubes of magnetic flux that pass through a type-II superconductor. Each vortex is a defect in the superconducting order parameter: the order-parameter magnitude is reduced in a small core, its quantum phase winds by 2π around that core, and circulating supercurrents carry the associated flux through the material.
This arrangement lets a type-II superconductor admit magnetic field without immediately losing superconductivity. Vortices appear above a lower critical field, become more numerous as the applied field rises, and can organize into an Abrikosov lattice. Their motion causes dissipation; pinning them to material defects is therefore central to making superconductors carry large currents.
What a quantum vortex is
A superconductor is not merely a material with low electrical resistance. Its electrons form a phase-coherent quantum state described by a complex order parameter. You can write that order parameter schematically as a magnitude multiplied by a phase. The magnitude indicates how strong the superconducting condensate is at a location; the phase records how the quantum state is oriented relative to the surrounding condensate.
A quantum vortex is a localized topological defect in this field. At the center, called the vortex core, the order-parameter magnitude falls strongly and can approach zero. Moving around the core, the phase changes continuously and returns to its original physical state only after winding by an integer multiple of 2π. The ordinary Abrikosov vortex has one 2π winding.

That phase winding is not an abstract mathematical detail. Gauge invariance ties the phase gradient to the electromagnetic vector potential, so the winding requires a circulating supercurrent and a concentrated magnetic field. The result is a flux line: magnetic flux is concentrated in and around the core while superconductivity remains present in the surrounding material.
“Quantum vortex,” “Abrikosov vortex,” and “flux line” are often used as near-synonyms when discussing conventional type-II superconductors. They should not be treated as universal names for every vortex-like object. Josephson vortices occur in tunnel junctions, and vortices in neutral superfluids carry circulation without an ordinary magnetic-flux tube.
Why vortices form in type-II superconductors
At a sufficiently weak applied magnetic field, a superconductor can expel magnetic flux from its interior. This is the Meissner response. A type-II superconductor has a second response available: rather than excluding all additional field until superconductivity collapses, it admits the field in discrete vortices while retaining a superconducting region between them.

The transition into this mixed state begins when the applied field reaches the lower critical field, often denoted Hc1. Below that threshold, isolated vortices are energetically unfavorable in an ideal bulk sample. Above it, introducing flux as separate tubes costs less free energy than forcing the whole sample either to expel the field or to abandon superconductivity.
As the applied field increases, the number of vortices per unit area increases. The magnetic field is therefore not spread smoothly through the sample in the mixed state. It is carried by many individually quantized tubes, with superconducting currents and a suppressed order parameter around each one.
At the upper critical field, Hc2, the vortex cores become so closely spaced that their suppressed regions overlap. The superconducting order is then destroyed throughout the material, and the mixed state gives way to the normal state. The interval between Hc1 and Hc2 is the regime in which Abrikosov vortices are the relevant field-carrying structures.

Field regimes at a glance
| Applied-field regime | Typical state | What happens to flux |
|---|---|---|
| Below Hc1 | Meissner state | Flux is largely expelled from the superconducting interior. |
| Between Hc1 and Hc2 | Mixed or vortex state | Flux enters as discrete vortices; superconductivity survives between them. |
| At and above Hc2 | Normal state | Overlapping vortex cores eliminate bulk superconductivity. |
How phase winding quantizes magnetic flux
The flux is quantized because the superconducting wavefunction must be single-valued. After moving around a closed path that encloses a vortex, the quantum state must return to an equivalent state. Its phase change can therefore be 0, 2π, 4π, and so on, rather than an arbitrary angle.

Integrating that combination around a closed loop gives a condition on the enclosed magnetic flux. For a singly quantized vortex, the phase contributes one 2π winding, and the enclosed flux is one magnetic-flux quantum. A vortex with a higher winding can carry an integer multiple of that quantum, although ordinary superconductors commonly favor separate singly quantized vortices.
The flux quantum is set by fundamental constants and the charge of the superconducting condensate. In conventional paired-electron notation it is represented by h/(2e), where h is Planck’s constant and e is the elementary charge. The important point is not a particular decimal value: every elementary Abrikosov vortex carries the same universal unit of flux for a given superconducting condensate.
Because the quantization condition is topological, small changes in the detailed shape of a vortex do not continuously change its total flux. Temperature, disorder, and applied field can alter the core structure, spacing, and motion, but they do not turn an elementary vortex into an arbitrary-flux tube.
What a vortex looks like inside the material
The phrase “tube” is a useful picture, but a vortex is not a rigid wire running through the sample. Its core is the region where the superconducting order parameter is most suppressed. Around that core, the phase varies azimuthally and supercurrents circulate. The magnetic field is concentrated near the line and decreases away from it over the material’s magnetic-field screening length.
Superconductivity is therefore weakened locally rather than erased everywhere. The core can be thought of as the price paid for allowing the phase to wind without becoming singular. Between cores, the order parameter recovers, and those superconducting regions carry current and connect the vortex structure across the sample.

Real vortices can bend, terminate at surfaces, or be distorted by defects and boundaries. In a sufficiently uniform bulk sample and a steady field, however, the lowest-energy arrangement is often a set of approximately parallel lines. Their detailed shape depends on anisotropy, sample geometry, thermal fluctuations, and the forces exerted by neighboring vortices.
Why vortices form an Abrikosov lattice
Vortices interact. Their circulating currents and magnetic fields overlap, producing forces that generally keep neighboring vortices apart. A large collection of repelling flux lines can lower its total free energy by arranging itself periodically rather than placing vortices at random.
A triangular, also called hexagonal, lattice is the common ideal arrangement for an isotropic type-II superconductor under many conditions. In this pattern, each vortex has six nearest neighbors at equal distances. The lattice spacing decreases as the applied field rises because more flux quanta must fit into the same area.
“Lattice” does not mean that every sample displays a perfect crystal. Pinning centers, grain boundaries, defects, anisotropy, finite-size effects, and thermal fluctuations can shift vortices away from ideal positions. The result may be a distorted lattice, a disordered solid, or a liquid-like vortex state in which lines move readily.
Ordered and disordered vortex states
| State | Characteristics | Typical causes |
|---|---|---|
| Ideal Abrikosov lattice | Regular periodic spacing, often triangular or hexagonal. | Uniform material, steady conditions, and weak disorder. |
| Pinned or distorted lattice | Long-range order is partly retained, but lines are displaced or immobilized. | Defects, impurities, grain boundaries, or engineered pinning sites. |
| Disordered or liquid-like state | Positions fluctuate strongly and vortices can rearrange or flow. | Thermal fluctuations, strong disorder, or driving current. |
Why vortex motion causes dissipation
A stationary vortex can coexist with a persistent superconducting current. A moving vortex is different. Its magnetic field and circulating currents sweep through the material, generating an electric response. Under an applied transport current, the Lorentz force can drive vortices sideways; their motion converts electrical work into heat, producing finite resistance even though the material remains superconducting between the cores.
This is why the existence of a vortex is not automatically harmful. The engineering question is whether vortices remain fixed or move under the intended current, field, and temperature. A sample can be in the mixed state and still carry useful current if vortex motion is sufficiently suppressed. Conversely, a weakly pinned vortex system can dissipate energy at currents far below the field where superconductivity itself disappears.

The amount of dissipation is not a single universal property of “a vortex.” It depends on the superconductor, temperature, field orientation, current density, defects, and the dynamic state of the vortex ensemble. Material comparisons therefore need more than a critical-field value; they must also consider pinning strength and vortex mobility.

Defects can trap vortices by making a vortex core or its surrounding currents energetically cheaper at that location. This process is called pinning. Strong pinning limits the distance a vortex can travel when a current is applied, reducing flux-flow dissipation and helping the conductor sustain a higher useful current.
Pinning is a trade-off rather than an unconditional benefit. A defect landscape that immobilizes vortices can also make the material’s response dependent on field direction, temperature, and its history. If vortices depin, they may move in avalanches or reorganize into a different configuration. Thermal fluctuations can also help a vortex escape a pinning site; at very low temperatures, quantum processes may contribute to mobility.
When evaluating a superconducting material or a vortex-control strategy, examine these separate axes:
- Lower and upper critical fields, which delimit the Meissner, mixed, and normal regimes.
- Vortex-lattice order versus disorder under the intended operating conditions.
- Pinning strength and how it changes with field orientation and temperature.
- Thermal and possible quantum vortex mobility.
- Dissipation produced by vortex motion at the required current.
What changes when the magnetic field increases
- Entry: Once the applied field reaches the vortex-entry regime above Hc1, the first quantized flux lines penetrate the sample.
- Population growth: Further increases in field add more vortices, raising their areal density.
- Closer spacing: The average distance between neighboring lines decreases, strengthening overlap between their fields and order-parameter profiles.
- Core overlap: Near Hc2, suppressed cores overlap so extensively that a coherent superconducting state cannot survive throughout the material.
- Collapse: Above the upper critical field, the vortex description no longer represents a superconducting mixed state because the bulk condensate has been destroyed.
These stages explain why “more magnetic field” does not simply mean “a stronger version of the same vortex.” The field changes both the number of vortices and the collective state they form.

| Object | What winds or circulates | Where it belongs | Magnetic flux through the core |
|---|---|---|---|
| Abrikosov vortex | Superconducting phase and associated supercurrent. | Bulk type-II superconductors in the mixed state. | Quantized magnetic-flux quantum per elementary vortex. |
| Josephson vortex | Phase difference across a weak link or tunnel junction. | Josephson junctions and layered junction structures. | Flux behavior is governed by the junction geometry and is not the same bulk object as an Abrikosov vortex. |
| Neutral-superfluid vortex | Phase and mass circulation in a neutral quantum fluid. | Superfluid helium and other neutral condensates. | No ordinary magnetic-flux tube, because the fluid is electrically neutral. |
The shared idea is phase winding. The physical field, core structure, and forces differ according to whether the condensate is charged, whether it occupies a bulk material or a weak link, and how electromagnetic screening operates.

Common misconceptions
“Every superconductor contains Abrikosov vortices.”
No. Abrikosov vortices are characteristic of type-II behavior. A type-I superconductor follows a different field response and does not support the same stable mixed-state vortex lattice over the corresponding range.
“A vortex is a hole through which all superconductivity leaks out.”
Only the core is strongly suppressed. The surrounding condensate and the regions between vortices remain superconducting until the vortex density becomes high enough to destroy the state near Hc2.
“Flux quantization means the entire sample contains only one quantum.”
Quantization applies to each elementary vortex. A macroscopic sample in the mixed state can contain many flux quanta, with the total flux set by the number of vortices and the sample area they occupy.
“A perfect lattice is guaranteed.”
The triangular Abrikosov lattice is an ideal low-free-energy arrangement, not a promise about every specimen. Disorder, pinning, thermal motion, and vortex driving can produce distortions or liquid-like behavior.
Why quantum vortices matter
Quantum vortices connect microscopic quantum phase coherence with measurable electromagnetic behavior. Their 2π winding fixes the flux carried by each line; their interactions determine whether a lattice forms; and their movement determines whether a nominally superconducting conductor dissipates energy.
For that reason, vortex physics is essential whenever a type-II superconductor operates in a magnetic field. Understanding the material means tracking not only whether superconductivity exists, but also how many vortices are present, how they are arranged, how strongly they are pinned, and whether the intended current can set them in motion.
