Short answer: A quantum state is the complete description of a quantum system: it determines the probabilities of measurement results and the expected values of observables. An excitation is a condition defined relative to a reference, usually a ground state or a field vacuum. It can mean a system occupying a higher energy level, or a particle-like quantum added to a quantum field. An excitation is therefore represented by a quantum state, but “excitation” and “state” answer different questions.

The distinction becomes clearest in two settings. In ordinary quantum mechanics, an excited state is a higher-energy state of an already specified system, such as an electron in an atom or a particle in a box. In quantum field theory, an excitation is a quantum of a field above a chosen vacuum or reference configuration; a photon is the familiar example for the electromagnetic field.

What a quantum state describes

A quantum state specifies everything the theory says about a system at a particular time. In a simple formulation it is represented by a state vector, or ket, such as |ψ⟩. More generally, an ensemble or an open system is described by a density operator. The representation can change when you choose a different basis, but the physical predictions do not.

From the state, quantum theory calculates the probability of every allowed measurement outcome. It also calculates expectation values, which are the statistical averages predicted for observables such as position, momentum, energy, spin or field amplitude. A state can be a definite value of one observable, a superposition of several values, or a mixed statistical preparation. “State” is therefore the broad term: it describes the system’s full quantum condition, not just its energy.

Energy is one observable among many. A state can have a definite energy, in which case it is an energy eigenstate, but it can also be a superposition of different energy eigenstates. Such a superposition has a well-defined state even though a single energy value is not guaranteed before measurement. Calling something a state does not imply that it is excited, unexcited, a particle, or even associated with a definite number of particles.

What “excitation” means in ordinary quantum mechanics

In elementary quantum mechanics, “excitation” usually refers to energy relative to the lowest-energy configuration of a specified system. The lowest-energy state is the ground state. A state with greater energy is an excited state. The word describes the state’s position on an energy ladder; it does not name a second object that exists separately from the state.

Particle in a box

A particle confined to a one-dimensional box has discrete energy eigenstates. The lowest level, conventionally labelled n = 1, is the ground state. Levels with n = 2, 3, … have progressively higher energies and are excited states. In the idealized box, the energies follow Eₙ = n²π²ħ²/(2mL²), where m is the particle’s mass and L is the box length.

If the particle is prepared in the n = 2 eigenstate, its energy is definite and the state is excited relative to n = 1. If it is prepared in a superposition such as a|1⟩ + b|2⟩, the complete state includes both components. It is not accurate to call only the |2⟩ part “the excitation” while ignoring the rest of the state. A measurement can find either energy, with probabilities determined by the coefficients, and the superposition itself is the system’s state.

Atoms and other bound systems

The same language applies to an atom, molecule or other bound system. An atom in its lowest electronic energy level is in its ground state. Absorbing energy can put it into an excited state. It may later emit a photon and return to a lower level. The atom’s excited state includes all relevant quantum information—such as angular momentum, spin and spatial structure—not merely the amount of extra energy.

The U.S. Department of Energy uses this discrete-level picture when explaining photons and bound systems: allowed energies come in distinct values, and electromagnetic radiation is emitted or absorbed when a system changes between them. “Excited” here is always relative to the system’s own ground state and Hamiltonian. Change the system or its environment, and the energy levels and meaning of excitation can change.

Excitations in quantum field theory

Quantum field theory changes the emphasis. Instead of treating particles as fundamental little objects moving through space, it assigns a quantum field to each type of matter or interaction. The electromagnetic field, for example, exists throughout space. Its allowed configurations are quantized, much as the energy levels of a harmonic oscillator are quantized.

The vacuum as a reference

In a standard free-field treatment, the vacuum is the reference state containing no quanta in the relevant field modes. A creation operator adds one quantum to a mode. Symbolically, if |0⟩ denotes the vacuum and a†k creates a quantum in mode k, then a†k|0⟩ is a one-quantum state. Applying another creation operator produces a two-quantum state, and so on.

David Tong’s Cambridge lecture notes use this construction to show how one-particle and multiparticle states arise in a free field. The resulting state is not separate from the excitation: the one-quantum configuration is itself a quantum state. The word “excitation” highlights that one quantum has been added relative to the chosen vacuum; the state notation records the complete configuration, including its mode, momentum, polarization and any other quantum numbers.

Photons as electromagnetic-field quanta

A photon is one quantum, or excitation, of the electromagnetic field. A single-photon state can have a definite momentum and polarization, or it can be a superposition of modes. A laser beam is not necessarily a collection of photons all in one identical classical trajectory; its quantum state can involve many modes and photon-number statistics. The field description remains primary, while particle language is a useful description in settings where the modes and occupation numbers are well defined.

Occupation number tells you how many quanta occupy a selected mode in a particular description. It does not by itself provide the entire state. A state can be a superposition of different occupation numbers, and correlations between modes can matter. Two states with the same average number of photons can have different fluctuations, phases and measurement predictions.

Are excitations themselves quantum states?

Yes—when “excitation” refers to a particular physical configuration, that configuration has a quantum state. The terms are not opposing categories. “State” asks, What is the complete quantum condition of the system? “Excitation” asks, What energy or field content does that condition have relative to a chosen reference?

For an atom, the excited state is a state with energy above the ground state. For a free electromagnetic field, a one-photon excitation is a state obtained by adding one quantum to the vacuum. In both cases, the excitation must be described by a state to calculate probabilities and expectation values.

The relationship is not one-to-one in the other direction. Not every quantum state is an excitation in the useful sense. The vacuum is a state but is normally called the zero-excitation state. A superposition of the vacuum and one-photon state is a valid state, even though it does not have a definite excitation number. A thermal state is also a valid quantum state and generally contains a distribution of excitation numbers rather than one definite excitation.

Ordinary energy levels versus field quanta

Question Ordinary quantum mechanics Quantum field theory
Reference The ground state of a specified system The vacuum or another selected reference state for field modes
Meaning of excitation A higher energy level or a state with energy above the ground state Occupation of a field mode by one or more quanta
Typical example A higher eigenstate of a particle in a box or an atom A photon as an excitation of the electromagnetic field
What is fully specified? The system’s complete state, including all observables The field’s complete quantum state, including mode occupations, phases and correlations
Can superpositions occur? Yes; a state can combine several energy eigenstates Yes; a state can combine different modes or different particle-number sectors
Main qualification “Excited” is relative to the system’s Hamiltonian and ground state Particle and occupation-number descriptions depend on the chosen field representation and physical setting

Why the particle picture has limits

In a simple free theory, the vacuum, creation operators and particle-number states provide a clean Fock-space description. In more complicated theories, that organization is not always unique or globally available. Interactions can make the notion of a sharply defined particle approximate. Different observers or different choices of mode decomposition can disagree about what counts as a particle.

The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy notes that discrete occupation numbers alone do not prove that every field excitation should be interpreted as a particle in every context. The mathematical theory may support field modes and number operators while the everyday image of independent, localized particles becomes misleading. It is safer to say “quantum of the field” or “field excitation” unless the physical conditions justify particle language.

The vacuum also requires care. In the standard free-field example, it is the no-particle reference state for the selected modes. But quantum field theory does not guarantee one unique vacuum or one universal Fock representation in every setting. Fermilab’s discussion of zero-point energy uses photons as electromagnetic-field excitations and points out that vacuum and particle interpretations can become ambiguous in curved-spacetime situations. That page was last modified on April 28, 2014, so it is useful for this basic framing rather than as a source for current research developments.

How to interpret the terminology in a textbook or article

When you encounter “excitation,” identify the reference and the theory before deciding what it means.

  1. Find the reference configuration. Is the author comparing energies with a ground state, or counting quanta relative to a field vacuum? If no reference is stated, the term is incomplete.
  2. Identify the system. An atom, oscillator or particle in a box uses ordinary energy-level language. A field mode, Fock space or creation operator signals a quantum-field-theory context.
  3. Check whether energy is definite. An excited energy eigenstate has a definite higher energy. A general state can be a superposition and may not have a definite excitation number or energy.
  4. Check the particle assumptions. In a free or approximately free theory with well-defined modes, “particle” may be an effective and useful label. In an interacting, accelerating-observer or curved-spacetime setting, ask which observer and mode decomposition define it.
  5. Separate state information from excitation count. Occupation number or energy tells only part of the state. Phase relations, polarization, momentum distributions and correlations can change experimental predictions without changing a simple average count.

Common misconceptions

“An excitation is a tiny object inside a state.”

Usually not. In field theory, an excitation is a quantized change in a field configuration. The one-photon state is a state of the electromagnetic field, not a separate bead placed into an otherwise unchanged container. Particle language is a model that works especially well when the relevant modes and detector processes support it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Every higher-energy state is a new particle.”

No. An atom in an excited electronic level is still the same atom. A particle in a box in the n = 2 level has not become a second species. The word “excited” describes energy relative to the ground state, not the creation of a new material object.

“A quantum state must have one energy or one particle number.”

No. Energy eigenstates and number eigenstates are special cases. Superpositions can contain several energies or occupation numbers. Measurement probabilities come from the full state, not from assigning one classical value to every observable at once.

“The vacuum means absolute nothingness.”

In a chosen field description, the vacuum is the state with no quanta in the selected modes. It is still a quantum state with defined correlations and zero-point structure. Its interpretation can depend on the theory, observer and spacetime, so “no particles” should not be expanded into a claim that no physical field or measurable effect exists.

The practical distinction in one sentence

A quantum state is the complete mathematical and physical description used to predict measurements; a quantum excitation is a higher-energy or field-quantum feature of that state, defined relative to a ground state, vacuum or other reference. The excitation is described by a state, while the state contains more information than the excitation label alone.
