Scientists do not yet know the definitive composition of Phobos or Deimos. Infrared observations offer hints but lack strong, unambiguous signatures; a reported hydration signal in Deimos is a clue, not a complete inventory. Researchers combine spacecraft images and spectra with elemental measurements, and the planned MMX mission is intended to return Phobos material for laboratory analysis. These findings could help test whether the moons are captured asteroids or debris from an impact on early Mars.

What are Phobos and Deimos made of?

Their exact composition is still unsettled. Both moons are dark, small bodies, but current observations do not establish a definitive list of minerals or a complete account of their interiors. NASA’s technical assessment describes their infrared spectra as inconclusive because they lack strong diagnostic features (NASA Technical Reports Server).

This distinction matters: a spectrum can indicate how a surface reflects light and reveal possible material signatures, but a weak or ambiguous signal cannot identify every constituent with confidence. Remote observations also sample the surface, not the entire body. It would therefore overstate the evidence to describe either moon as definitively made of a particular meteorite type or a specific set of minerals.

There is also a difference between detecting a possible surface signature and establishing a full composition. Spectral observations can constrain the properties of the material exposed at the surface, but the available observations do not supply a complete inventory of either moon. Elemental measurements and, eventually, laboratory work on returned grains address different parts of the question. Even when evidence adds an important clue, it should be described in terms of what was measured rather than treated as a settled answer about the whole body.

A reported hydration clue on Deimos

A study using NASA’s Infrared Telescope Facility SpeX instrument reported a hydration indication in Deimos’s long-wavelength near-infrared spectrum. The reported depths of its 3-micrometer bands were 4–5% (NASA Technical Reports Server paper). This is a spectral signature consistent with hydration; it is not proof of a complete composition, nor does it establish the material in Deimos’s bulk interior.

The finding is useful because it gives scientists a specific feature to compare with future observations and models. But a band depth is a measurement of a feature in the observed spectrum, not a percentage of Deimos that is hydrated. It also does not, on its own, provide a complete explanation of what material produces the signal. The careful conclusion is that the study reported evidence of hydration in the spectrum, while the moon’s full composition remains open.

Possible surface variation on Phobos

The same work found changes in the slope of Phobos’s spectrum at shorter wavelengths. The authors interpreted these as possible surface heterogeneity, which could be related to composition, grain size, space weathering, or some combination. A spectral difference is a reason to investigate the surface, not by itself a mineral identification.

These possible explanations are a reminder that a change in reflected light can have more than one interpretation. The observations may point to differences in surface material, but grain size and space weathering are also among the factors identified in the study. Spatially resolved views and other types of measurement can help scientists investigate such differences, without turning an ambiguous slope into a definitive claim about a particular mineral.

Why composition could reveal how the moons formed

Two leading origin scenarios remain under consideration. In one, Mars captured asteroids that became its moons. In the other, debris from a large impact on early Mars remained in orbit and formed the moons. ESA presents both possibilities, and observations have not settled the question (ESA’s MMX mission overview).

These histories suggest different relationships between the moons’ material and Mars or asteroids. Better compositional evidence could therefore help scientists assess which scenario better fits the observations. Composition alone may not resolve the origin question, but it is an important part of the test: researchers need measurements with enough detail to compare the moons’ materials against the expectations of each explanation.

This is why the question of what the moons are made of is also a question about their history. If their material can be characterized more fully, scientists can evaluate whether it fits more naturally with one of the proposed formation pathways. The present evidence does not make that comparison decisive. The capture and impact-debris explanations remain hypotheses to test, rather than established descriptions of how Phobos and Deimos formed.

How scientists investigate the moons

Each method measures something different. Images show surface appearance; spectroscopy studies reflected light; gamma-ray and neutron instruments can infer elemental composition; laboratory analysis of returned grains can examine physical samples directly. The approaches complement one another rather than providing interchangeable answers.

Method What it measures What it can establish—and its limits Coverage
Spacecraft imaging and remote spectroscopy Surface appearance and reflected light Can identify spectral slopes, absorption features, and possible differences across a surface. Weak or ambiguous features limit confident identification; observations do not directly inventory the interior. Remote observations can study both moons.
Gamma-ray and neutron spectroscopy Gamma rays and neutrons emitted from Phobos Can be used to infer elemental composition. MMX measurements are planned, not completed results. Planned measurements focus on Phobos.
Laboratory study of returned material Physical grains collected from Phobos Can provide detailed mineralogical and chemical context. Results depend on the returned material and analysis, which are prospective until samples arrive. MMX plans to sample Phobos; this is not a sample-return plan for both moons.

The comparison is not simply a ranking of one method as better than another. Remote reflectance measurements can study both moons and reveal surface patterns, but their signatures can be ambiguous. MEGANE’s planned gamma-ray and neutron measurements target elemental composition at Phobos, rather than providing laboratory identification of every mineral. Returned grains can be examined directly and in greater detail, but that route depends on a successful return and applies to the material collected on Phobos. Taken together, the methods offer different kinds of evidence and have different coverage.

Imaging and spectroscopy: clues from reflected light

Spacecraft cameras record what a surface looks like, while spectrometers measure how it reflects light at different wavelengths. Scientists examine the resulting slopes and absorption features for clues about surface material and look for spatial variation that may point to differences across a moon. The Deimos hydration indication and possible spectral heterogeneity on Phobos illustrate the value of this method—and why interpretation must remain qualified when the features are not diagnostic.

Imaging supplies spatial context for the reflected-light evidence: it can show surface appearance and help distinguish observations of one area from another. Spectroscopy adds information about how the surface interacts with light across wavelengths. Neither step amounts to directly collecting material. In particular, when a feature is weak or ambiguous, the responsible result is a constraint or clue, not a definitive ingredient list. That limitation applies even when observations reveal a repeatable spectral variation.

Gamma-ray and neutron measurements: inferring elements

NASA describes MMX’s MEGANE instrument as measuring gamma rays and neutrons emitted from Phobos to infer its elemental composition. JAXA lists those measurements within a broader payload intended to investigate the moons and characterize Phobos (NASA’s MMX mission page; JAXA’s MMX mission site). These are planned mission observations, so they should not be mistaken for composition results already obtained.

This method adds a different kind of evidence from the reflected-light spectra. The instrument is intended to infer elements from gamma rays and neutrons associated with Phobos; the description does not make it a direct mineral inventory. Its planned measurements are part of a broader mission payload, and their intended role is to help characterize Phobos. They will complement rather than replace the remote observations and the planned study of returned grains.

Sample analysis: examining Phobos material on Earth

A returned sample can be studied with laboratory techniques that offer more detailed mineralogical and chemical context than remote sensing alone. NASA describes participating scientist Jemma Davidson’s planned work on opaque minerals in Phobos samples, using microscopy and mass spectrometry to investigate their origin and alteration history (NASA Science’s Mars moons page). This is prospective analysis: no findings from the planned MMX samples can be stated until material is returned and examined.

Laboratory analysis changes the kind of evidence available: researchers can examine physical grains rather than only interpreting light or emissions observed remotely. Davidson’s planned focus on opaque minerals is one example of how returned material could be investigated. Microscopy and mass spectrometry are planned tools for studying those minerals and considering their origin and alteration history. Those are goals for future analysis, not results already obtained, and the sample would represent collected Phobos material rather than a complete sample of both moons.

What MMX is planned to do—and when

The Martian Moons eXploration mission (MMX) is led by JAXA, with contributions from NASA, CNES, DLR, and ESA. Its goals include investigating both moons, landing on Phobos, collecting material, and returning it to Earth. The published dates below are agency schedules, not guarantees; mission timelines can change.

Milestone Published plan Qualification
Launch October 20, 2026 Date listed on NASA’s mission page; schedules may change.
Phobos sample return At least 10 grams in Japanese fiscal year 2031 ESA’s stated plan; the return and quantity are not completed results.

ESA’s MMX factsheet gives the planned quantity and return period (ESA’s MMX factsheet and mission information). JAXA describes two distinct sampling mechanisms designed to collect material from Phobos (JAXA’s MMX mission site). These plans concern sampling Phobos; the mission’s investigation of both moons does not mean it will return samples from both.

The planned return of at least 10 grams is a target quantity, not material already in laboratories. The agency schedule places the planned return in Japanese fiscal year 2031, while NASA’s mission page lists October 20, 2026 for launch. Both dates should be reported as plans and qualified because schedules may change. Keeping the distinction clear matters when describing the mission: a proposed sample collection, a future return, and completed laboratory results are separate milestones.

MMX’s scope also has two parts that should not be conflated. It is intended to investigate both Phobos and Deimos, but the sampling and sample-return plan described by the agencies is for Phobos. JAXA identifies two distinct mechanisms intended to collect Phobos material. The research supports describing those mechanisms and the intended return, but not treating the mission as a planned sample return from Deimos.

How to interpret claims about the moons

  • “The spectra suggest…” is appropriately cautious when describing a possible material signature. Spectral evidence is not automatically a definitive mineral identification.
  • “Deimos shows a hydration indication” accurately describes the reported 3-micrometer feature; it should not be expanded into a claim about the moon’s entire composition.
  • “MMX will measure…” or “plans to return…” describes mission objectives and schedules. MEGANE measurements and laboratory findings should not be presented as completed results before they occur.
  • “The moons are captured asteroids” or “they formed from impact debris” goes beyond what current evidence establishes. Both remain competing origin scenarios.

A good summary separates three levels of certainty: the observations already reported, the interpretations scientists draw from them, and the measurements MMX plans to make. The 4–5% band depths are a reported spectral observation; hydration is its interpretation. MEGANE’s elemental measurements, the Phobos sample return, and laboratory analyses are future plans in the cited agency material. This separation allows readers to understand both the evidence and its limits without confusing an intended investigation with a result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do scientists know exactly what Phobos and Deimos are made of?

No. Their exact compositions remain unsettled. Infrared spectra lack strong diagnostic features, so current observations do not establish a definitive mineral list or a complete inventory of either moon.

Does the 3-micrometer signal prove Deimos contains water?

A published SpeX study reported a hydration indication in Deimos’s long-wavelength spectrum, with 3-micrometer band depths of 4–5%. That is a reported spectral signature, not proof of a complete composition or of the material in Deimos’s interior.

How will MMX measure Phobos’s composition?

NASA describes the MEGANE instrument as measuring gamma rays and neutrons emitted from Phobos to infer elemental composition. These are planned measurements, not results already obtained.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will MMX bring samples back from both Martian moons?

The mission is intended to investigate both moons, but the planned landing, collection, and return are focused on Phobos. ESA’s plan calls for at least 10 grams from Phobos, not samples from both moons.

When are the Phobos samples expected to return?

ESA gives Japanese fiscal year 2031 as the planned return period for at least 10 grams. NASA’s mission page lists an October 20, 2026 launch date. These are agency schedules that may change, not completed milestones.

Why does composition matter for the moons’ origin?

The leading scenarios are asteroid capture and formation from debris after a large impact on early Mars. Those histories imply different expected relationships between the moons’ material and Mars or asteroids, so better composition evidence can help test them. The origin question remains open.

The Bottom Line

Phobos and Deimos do not yet have definitive compositional inventories. Spectra provide qualified clues—including a reported hydration indication on Deimos—while MMX plans to add elemental measurements at Phobos and return material for laboratory study. Those future results may help test whether the moons were captured asteroids or formed from impact debris, but neither origin is established today.
