A Lightning Network channel is a Bitcoin-funded connection between two Lightning nodes. After an on-chain funding transaction confirms, the nodes exchange signed updates that redistribute the channel’s bitcoin without recording every payment on Bitcoin. Channels can also be joined into multi-hop routes, allowing a payment to reach a recipient with whom the sender has no direct channel.
What a Lightning channel is
A channel is a relationship between exactly two Lightning peers. One or both peers provide bitcoin to a funding transaction that anchors the channel on the Bitcoin blockchain. The channel then maintains an agreed allocation of that bitcoin between the two participants.
Instead of broadcasting a Bitcoin transaction for every coffee, invoice or routed payment, the peers exchange signed commitment transactions. Each commitment represents a newer distribution of the channel’s funds. Only the latest valid state is intended to settle when the channel closes; routine updates remain off-chain.
This design separates two jobs:
- Bitcoin provides final settlement. The funding transaction opens the channel, and a closing transaction eventually returns the channel’s funds to the participants.
- Lightning handles frequent updates. Payments change the signed balance state between closes, avoiding a separate on-chain transaction for each payment.
A channel itself connects only its two participants. Network-wide reach comes from linking channels together: a sender can pay through a sequence of nodes that forward the payment.

How a channel opens, carries payments and closes
The lifecycle has several distinct stages. “Instant” generally describes an established channel payment, not every stage of opening or settlement.
1. The peers negotiate channel parameters
A funder proposes channel details and the other node accepts or rejects them. The funder creates the funding transaction and the initial commitment transactions. The peers exchange the signatures needed for those commitments so that each side has an enforceable view of the channel state.
At this point, the nodes have prepared the channel but cannot necessarily use it for normal payments. The funding output still has to appear on Bitcoin and reach the confirmation depth required by the node software and its channel policy.
2. The funding transaction confirms on Bitcoin
The funder broadcasts the funding transaction and pays the applicable Bitcoin miner fee. The peers wait for the required confirmations, then exchange readiness messages. The exact confirmation requirement is implementation- and policy-dependent; it is not a universal fixed number.
This waiting period is why opening a channel is not always immediate. Once the channel is confirmed and ready, subsequent updates can be exchanged quickly, but the initial on-chain anchor still follows Bitcoin’s confirmation process.
3. Each payment creates a newer balance state
Suppose the channel starts with most of its balance on the funder’s side. When that peer pays the other, the nodes sign a new commitment state that moves the corresponding amount toward the recipient’s side. The previous state is replaced by the newer agreed state for normal operation.
The channel can carry many payments this way. Bitcoin does not receive a transaction for each update; the blockchain sees the opening transaction and, later, whichever closing settlement is used.

4. Multi-hop payments use conditional transfers
A sender does not need a direct channel to every recipient. If the network can find a route through intermediate nodes, each hop forwards a conditional payment. Lightning uses hashed time-locked contracts (HTLCs): every hop is tied to the same payment secret and to time constraints.
If the recipient supplies the required secret, the conditional transfers settle along the route. If the payment cannot complete, the conditions and timeouts allow the transfers to fail rather than leaving an intermediate node permanently out of pocket. A route can therefore succeed or fail as a coordinated attempt.
5. The channel closes cooperatively or unilaterally
In a cooperative close, both peers agree on the final allocation and create a closing transaction. This is normally the cleanest settlement path because the nodes coordinate on the latest state.
If a peer is offline, unresponsive or otherwise unwilling to cooperate, the other can force-close by broadcasting a valid commitment transaction. A force close can delay access to some funds before they become spendable, and its fee handling depends on the channel design. It is not always immediate or cost-free.

A channel’s capacity is its total bitcoin. Liquidity is how that capacity is distributed between the two sides and whether the distribution supports the payment direction you need.

| Remote balance | The amount allocated to the peer’s side | Generally supports payments received by your node through that channel |
| Channel capacity | The combined amount held by both sides | Sets the channel’s total ceiling, but not the amount available in either direction |
For example, a channel may have substantial total capacity while almost all of it sits on your side. You might be able to send through that channel but have little inbound liquidity for receiving. If a payment moves in the other direction, the distribution changes accordingly.
Routing changes two channels at once from the perspective of an intermediary. A node receives through one channel and sends through another, reducing usable balance on the outgoing side while increasing it on the incoming side. Over time, the node’s ability to route depends on these directional balances, not merely on the sum of its channel capacities.

Lightning Labs describes the operational requirement this way: “Sufficient liquidity, meaning the ability to send, receive and route, is an important condition to making these payments work.”

Lightning route discovery can show a path without proving that the path will work at that moment. A successful payment depends on several conditions:
- Directional liquidity: every hop must have enough balance on the side required for the transfer.
- Peer availability: a node that is offline or unreachable cannot forward a payment.
- Current channel state: balances and channel status can change after route information was observed.
- Route policy and fees: forwarding nodes advertise constraints that affect whether a route is usable for the amount and timing involved.
- End-to-end completion: the HTLC conditions must be satisfied across all hops before the payment settles.
The official Lightning overview cautions that route liquidity and node availability are not fully knowable in advance. A failed attempt therefore does not necessarily mean that the recipient lacks a channel; it may mean that one hop lacked the required directional balance or was temporarily unavailable.
Public and private channels
Public channels
A public channel is announced so other nodes can learn about it during network discovery. It may be considered as part of routes for payments involving nodes beyond the two channel participants.
Private channels
A private channel is not announced for other nodes’ routing paths. The two participants can still use it to send and receive between themselves, but unrelated nodes generally cannot select it as a publicly advertised hop.
Private means undisclosed for routing, not that every payment using the channel is automatically private. The distinction is about discoverability and routing reach; it should not be treated as a blanket privacy guarantee.
What opening and closing cost
Opening and closing involve Bitcoin transactions, so both lifecycle events can incur on-chain fees. The fee is not a fixed “Lightning channel price.” It varies with Bitcoin’s fee market, the transaction’s size and the choices made by the implementation and channel type.

Once a channel is open, many payments can share the cost of that on-chain anchor. That is the economic reason channels can be useful for repeated transfers: the blockchain does not record each individual balance update.
Funds committed to a channel are not as flexible as bitcoin sitting in an ordinary on-chain wallet. Their practical availability depends on the peer, the channel’s latest state and the close path. If a peer is offline, recovering through a non-cooperative close may leave funds unavailable for longer. A force close can also impose a delay before certain outputs can be redeemed, with fee flexibility determined by the channel design.

There is no universally best channel arrangement. A node that mainly pays has a different liquidity requirement from one that mainly receives or routes for others. The relevant questions are whether the peers are dependable, whether the channel is discoverable when needed and whether balance is positioned in the direction of expected payments.
A concrete payment example
Imagine Alice has a channel with Bob, and Bob has a channel with Carol. Alice wants to pay Carol but has no direct channel with her.
- Alice’s node selects a route through Bob based on the information it can discover.
- The payment is offered to Bob’s forwarding channel with the same conditional secret and timeout structure used for the rest of the route.
- Bob can forward only if his channel with Carol has sufficient outgoing liquidity and meets its forwarding conditions.
- When Carol reveals the payment secret, the conditional transfers settle back through Bob to Alice’s payment path.
- The result is a balance shift on Alice–Bob and Bob–Carol; no new Bitcoin transaction is required for those individual updates.
If Bob is offline, either channel lacks the required directional balance, or a route condition changes, the attempt can fail even though the two channels are visible in network information.

At a minimum, a participant needs bitcoin for the funding transaction and a Lightning node that can maintain channel state. The node must communicate with a peer during negotiation, wait for the funding transaction’s required confirmations and remain able to exchange updates for normal operation.

Operators also need to treat uptime and liquidity as operational responsibilities. A node that is frequently offline may be unable to receive or forward payments, and a channel whose balance has migrated almost entirely to one side may stop serving the direction its operator needs. The number of channels alone does not solve either problem.

Common misconceptions
“Every Lightning payment is on-chain.”
No. The funding and closing events use Bitcoin transactions, while ordinary channel payments update signed off-chain states.
“A large channel can send and receive equally.”
No. Capacity is total size; the local and remote distribution determines directional liquidity.
“A visible route guarantees delivery.”
No. Liquidity, peer availability and current channel conditions can invalidate a route attempt.

No. Private channels are not announced for general route discovery. That property does not establish universal payment privacy.
“Force closing is an instant withdrawal.”
No. A unilateral close can delay redemption and has fee implications that depend on the channel design.
The practical takeaway
Lightning channels move Bitcoin payment activity off-chain while retaining an on-chain settlement path. Two peers fund and negotiate a channel, exchange signed balance states as payments occur, use HTLCs when a payment crosses multiple channels, and eventually settle cooperatively or through a unilateral close. The mechanism is simple to state but operationally directional: usable liquidity, peer availability and channel state determine what a node can actually send, receive or route.
