A knowledge graph connects software entities, data, and business concepts through explicitly defined relationships. In a legacy-modernization program, it can link programs to transactions, tables to schemas, interfaces to contracts, and technical fields to the business concepts they represent. That shared map helps teams discover hidden dependencies, assess change impact, plan work around logical boundaries, and trace data through a migration.

You usually do not need to move every record into a new graph database. A virtual knowledge graph can map an ontology to existing relational or distributed sources, while selected facts are materialized when persistent cross-system links, reasoning, or predictable graph performance is required.

What a knowledge graph is

A conventional database stores records according to a schema. A knowledge graph also represents the meaning of those records and the relationships between them. Its nodes can represent entities such as a customer, program, table, product, process, or contract. Its edges describe relationships such as calls, reads from, implements, transforms, or is governed by.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An ontology or domain schema defines the concepts and relationship types that are valid. It can also define constraints, identity rules, and properties. This semantic layer lets a team ask questions in business terms rather than matching column names or relying on undocumented conventions. AWS describes this approach as an ontology-driven knowledge layer with explicit semantics, relationships, and constraints that can support semantic queries and inference.

Graph versus knowledge graph

A graph-shaped collection of records is not automatically a knowledge graph. The distinguishing feature is the agreed meaning behind the connections. For example, a link labelled depends_on should have a defined interpretation: does it mean a compile-time dependency, a runtime call, a foreign-key relationship, or a business prerequisite? The ontology and mapping rules answer that question.

Knowledge graphs can be implemented with different data models and query technologies. The cited AWS architecture uses ontologies, OWL, R2RML mappings, and SPARQL in its virtual-data-access pattern. A separate AWS case study says a product-information implementation selected RDF and SHACL validation. Those examples do not mean every knowledge graph must use RDF, one ontology language, or one query interface.

Why legacy software is difficult to modernize

Older applications often contain valuable business rules but little reliable documentation. The rules may be spread across source code, database schemas, batch jobs, message formats, screen definitions, reports, and manual operating procedures. Names may have changed over decades, and the same business concept may appear under several technical labels.

Modernization decisions fail when teams cannot answer basic dependency questions: Which programs read this table? Which interfaces depend on this field? Which business process will change if a transaction is replaced? Which target-system attribute receives a value derived from three source fields? A knowledge graph gives those questions a common structure instead of leaving answers in disconnected spreadsheets and individual experts’ memories.

How knowledge graphs support modernization

1. Reverse-engineering applications and dependencies

IBM Research’s paper Incremental Analysis of Legacy Applications Using Knowledge Graphs for Application Modernization, dated January 8, 2022, describes extracting source-code and data artifacts into a knowledge graph governed by a customizable ontology. Analysts can represent programs, transactions, database tables, schemas, and related artifacts, then explore how they depend on one another.

The method is intended to be interactive. Instead of trying to understand an entire estate at once, an architect can select entities relevant to a modernization question, group dependent components into logical boundaries, and inspect adjacent dependencies. The paper reports an initial study on two client applications. That scope demonstrates a method, not a universal success rate or a quantified return on investment.

2. Making change impact visible

Once relationships have consistent labels, a proposed change can be evaluated as a traversal through the graph. Replacing a transaction, for example, may affect programs that call it, tables it updates, interfaces that publish its results, and business processes that depend on those interfaces. The graph does not decide whether the change is safe; it exposes the areas that require analysis and testing.

Impact views are especially useful when ownership is split among application, database, integration, and business teams. Each group can inspect the same dependency model while retaining its own technical details. The model can also record confidence, source location, and extraction date so that analysts distinguish verified links from inferred or unconfirmed ones.

3. Defining incremental modernization boundaries

A graph helps teams choose a slice of the estate that is coherent enough to modernize independently. A boundary might be a business capability, a transaction family, a data domain, or a set of interfaces with a clear owner. The boundary can include technical dependencies that must be addressed even when they sit outside the main application.

This is safer than selecting components solely by programming language or server. A legacy service that appears small may depend on shared tables and batch jobs used by several business processes. Graph navigation exposes those shared dependencies before a team commits to a cutover plan.

4. Modeling migration transformations and lineage

A migration graph can connect source structures to business concepts, transformation rules, target fields, and import templates. The Neo4j-hosted conference session Understanding Before Migrating: How We Used Knowledge Graphs to Transform Legacy Systems describes a black-box mainframe and a customized MOVEX installation with incomplete documentation and limited source-code access. The described case involved more than 6,500 attributes, business processes, user interfaces, contracts, and target-system structures.

According to the session description, one metadata graph connected systems and artifacts, while a separate semantic transformation graph represented data around business concepts. Together they were used to discover hidden dependencies, model complex transformations, populate migration templates, and maintain end-to-end traceability from source information to target imports. The figure is a measure of that case’s scope, not an industry benchmark or proof of a particular delivery speed.

5. Keeping existing databases in place

A knowledge graph can be added as a semantic layer rather than as an immediate replacement for operational databases. AWS Prescriptive Guidance describes an ontology-based data-access service that translates SPARQL queries over an ontology into SQL for relational sources through R2RML mappings and OWL ontologies.

In this virtual pattern, data remains in source systems and is exposed through mappings. A materialized graph can be added for information that needs persistent cross-domain links, extracted propositions, reasoning results, or more predictable graph traversal. AWS recommends an incremental approach: virtualize sources first, materialize only what a use case requires, and enrich the model as validated needs emerge.

6. Supporting operational applications

Not every graph used in modernization is only an analysis tool. An operational knowledge graph can become the serving model for a production application that needs to navigate heterogeneous relationships. An AWS Database Blog case study describes CSC Generation’s CorePIM, a product-information management system built around a knowledge graph powered by Amazon Neptune. The post says the previous product-information system used MySQL and that its query approach did not scale efficiently for the company’s growing catalog.

The case study reports RDF modeling and SHACL validation for product attributes, with product information organized for discovery across brands. It is a vendor-authored implementation example, not independent evidence that graph databases outperform relational databases in general. The relevant architectural distinction is whether the graph is used to analyze and plan change or to serve and update production workloads.

How the architecture fits together

  1. Inventory sources. Collect source code, schemas, database catalogs, interface definitions, batch schedules, contracts, process documentation, and migration templates. Record where each artifact came from and when it was captured.
  2. Define the modernization question. Start with a decision the graph must support, such as identifying the impact of replacing a transaction or tracing a customer attribute into a target system. A broad enterprise ontology without a concrete use case is difficult to validate.
  3. Choose a domain vocabulary. Define concepts such as program, transaction, table, business process, customer, contract, and target attribute. Specify relationship meanings and identity rules. Knowledge practitioners typically maintain this semantic design, while domain experts validate whether it reflects the business.
  4. Extract and map metadata. Parse source artifacts and map technical objects to ontology concepts. Preserve the original identifier, source location, extraction method, and confidence. Where two names may refer to the same entity, record the proposed identity match rather than silently merging them.
  5. Validate constraints and mappings. Check that required fields exist, relationship types are used consistently, and transformation rules produce values acceptable to the target system. SHACL is one example of a constraint-validation approach; the appropriate mechanism depends on the chosen stack.
  6. Expose or materialize data. Use mappings to query existing relational or distributed systems when copying data is unnecessary. Materialize selected facts when source availability, latency, reasoning, or cross-domain traversal requires graph-native storage.
  7. Deliver a bounded workflow. Provide dependency views, impact queries, lineage reports, or migration-template generation for the chosen scope. Capture corrections from architects and business reviewers as changes to mappings or ontology rules, not as undocumented one-off fixes.
  8. Expand from evidence. Add another application or domain only after the first workflow has measurable quality criteria and an owner for ongoing maintenance.

Choosing an implementation approach

Decision axis Analysis-oriented graph Operational or serving graph
Primary purpose Reverse-engineer dependencies, assess impact, and plan modernization. Support production queries and updates across connected entities.
Typical data Source code, schemas, interfaces, transactions, schedules, and ownership metadata. Business entities and relationships needed by an application, such as product information.
Update pattern Refreshes follow extraction and analysis cycles. Updates may be part of normal application operations.
Success measure Completeness and usefulness of dependency, impact, and lineage analysis. Correctness, availability, latency, and maintainability for production workloads.

Data placement choice Use when Important trade-off
Virtual knowledge graph Source systems remain authoritative and mappings can answer required queries. Query performance, source availability, mapping quality, and source-schema changes must be managed.
Materialized knowledge graph Persistent links, inference, extracted facts, cross-domain traversal, or predictable latency are required. Data must be loaded, reconciled, secured, refreshed, and governed separately from source systems.
Hybrid model Some information is best queried in place while selected facts need graph-native storage. Teams must define freshness, provenance, and conflict rules between virtual and materialized data.

No single model or vendor is established as universally best. Evaluate the existing data platform, required query language, federation needs, APIs, identity-resolution approach, inference requirements, team skills, and operational ownership.

Governance requirements

Making a relationship explicit does not make the underlying data correct. A graph can faithfully expose an incorrect mapping or an incomplete source. Governance therefore belongs in the design, not as a later cleanup exercise.

  • Semantic ownership: Assign responsibility for ontology terms, relationship definitions, and changes to the domain model.
  • Business validation: Have domain experts confirm that technical fields and transformations represent the intended business concepts.
  • Provenance: Keep the source record, extraction time, mapping rule, and transformation version for every important fact.
  • Identity resolution: Define how duplicate technical objects, renamed fields, and cross-system entities are matched, and retain ambiguity when it cannot be resolved safely.
  • Constraint checking: Validate required attributes, allowed relationship types, code values, and target-system rules before publishing migration outputs.
  • Security: Apply access controls to sensitive source data and to inferred relationships that may reveal organizational or customer information.
  • Change management: Monitor source-schema changes and update mappings deliberately so a refreshed graph does not silently alter analysis results.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Building an enterprise-wide ontology first

A giant model delays useful results and creates arguments over terms that the first modernization decision may never use. Begin with a bounded system area and the concepts needed for a defined workflow. Expand when a real dependency crosses the initial boundary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming graph storage solves data quality

Entity resolution, missing metadata, inconsistent identifiers, and undocumented business rules remain difficult in a graph. Use confidence levels, provenance, validation checks, and domain review to make uncertainty visible.

Copying every source record by default

Bulk replication adds storage, refresh, reconciliation, and security work. Test whether a virtual mapping meets the use case first. Materialize only information that needs graph-native behavior or dependable cross-source traversal.

Treating discovered links as proof of safe change

A dependency edge identifies something to investigate; it does not replace testing, operational analysis, or business approval. Distinguish statically extracted relationships, runtime observations, inferred links, and human-confirmed relationships.

Promising savings without a baseline

The cited sources do not provide comparable, independent figures for modernization cost reduction, delivery time, or performance improvement. Establish project-specific baselines before claiming an outcome.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to measure whether the graph is helping

Choose measurements tied to the modernization workflow rather than graph size. Useful measures include the time required to identify all known dependencies for a change, the percentage of target fields with traceable source and transformation lineage, the number of reconciliation defects found before import, and the rate at which business reviewers accept or reject proposed mappings.

For an impact-analysis graph, compare results with the team’s previous documented process and record missed dependencies discovered during testing. For a virtual graph, measure query latency and failure behavior against source-system availability. For a production graph, define application-level availability, correctness, and response-time targets. These are project measures; the published studies do not establish universal benchmark values.

When a knowledge graph is a good fit

A graph is especially useful when relationships are the central problem: documentation is fragmented, dependencies cross technical and business boundaries, transformations are difficult to explain, or teams need lineage across several systems. It is less compelling when the use case is a simple, stable report that a conventional query already answers efficiently and transparently.

The practical test is whether a semantic relationship changes a decision. If connecting a legacy field to a business concept lets a team identify a migration dependency, validate a transformation, or choose a safer modernization boundary, the graph is doing useful work. If it merely duplicates data without supporting such a decision, the added modeling and governance may not be justified.
