A hybrid WordPress theme is a classic PHP theme that adopts selected block-era features, such as theme.json, block patterns, block template parts, or style variations. It is not an official third theme type; it is a community term for modernizing a working classic theme without replacing its PHP template architecture.
This approach lets you add editor-friendly settings and reusable block layouts while retaining the hooks, filters, conditional logic, custom queries, and integrations that already depend on PHP templates.
What “hybrid theme” means in WordPress
WordPress’s Theme Handbook describes hybrid themes as “merely classic themes that have adopted some modern block-related features, such as global settings and styles or block template parts.” The term is widely used by the WordPress community, but it is not an official theme classification.
The practical definition is architectural: the theme still uses the classic PHP template system, while selected parts of the block system are added where they provide a clear benefit. A hybrid theme may use theme.json for global settings, register block patterns for repeatable layouts, expose block-editor supports, or introduce block-based template parts. None of those additions, by themselves, turn the theme into a block theme.

Think of hybrid development as an incremental modernization strategy. You keep the stable parts of a classic theme and introduce block capabilities at a deliberate boundary instead of migrating the entire site at once.
How hybrid, classic and block themes differ
The decisive difference is not whether a theme contains any blocks. Classic themes can render blocks in post content, register patterns, and use theme.json. The decisive difference is where the theme’s main templates live and which editor controls the site shell.
| Area | Classic theme | Hybrid theme | Block theme |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rendering architecture | Traditional PHP files and the classic template hierarchy. | Traditional PHP files remain the foundation, with selected block features layered on top. | HTML block templates, normally in /templates or /block-templates. |
| Template requirement | No index.html template in the block-template directories. |
Same PHP-template requirement as a classic theme; adding theme.json does not change it. |
At minimum, an index.html template exists in one of the block-template directories. |
| Editing surface | Customizer, widget screens, post editor, and code-defined layouts, depending on the theme. | Selective block-editor settings, patterns, styles, or template parts alongside the existing PHP-controlled areas. | Site Editor controls templates, navigation, headers, footers, and other site areas made from blocks. |
| Migration risk | No migration is required, but modern block features may need to be added individually. | Incremental changes can be tested without replacing the whole template system. | Moving the site shell to HTML block templates is a broader architectural migration. |
| Client control | Mostly determined by PHP, theme settings, and registered supports. | Explicitly divided between code-controlled PHP areas and editor-controlled block areas. | Users can generally change more of the site shell in the Site Editor. |
Block themes entered the WordPress ecosystem with WordPress 5.9 in 2022. They use blocks for all major site areas, including navigation, headers, content, and footers, and are edited through the Template and Site Editors. A hybrid theme does not provide that full-site editing model unless you deliberately move its templates into the block-theme architecture.
Why build a hybrid theme?
A hybrid theme is useful when an existing PHP theme is reliable but needs modern authoring or design controls. Rebuilding the theme as a block theme can affect template hierarchy assumptions, hooks, filters, custom queries, plugin integrations, and client workflows. A hybrid lets you target a specific problem instead.
Use global design controls without rewriting templates
theme.json can define color palettes, typography, spacing, gradients, layout settings, and editor controls. These settings give authors consistent choices in the editor while your existing PHP templates continue to render the page.
Offer repeatable layouts
Block patterns package a group of blocks into a reusable starting layout. They are appropriate for callout sections, feature grids, author boxes, landing-page sections, or other structures that editors repeatedly assemble.

A block template part can be a good fit for a component whose markup benefits from block editing, while PHP remains responsible for areas that rely on conditional logic or legacy hooks. This allows a controlled boundary rather than an accidental partial migration.
Reduce disruption for an established site
Keeping the classic template hierarchy means existing page templates, archive logic, enqueue functions, filters, and integrations can remain in place while you test new editor features on staging.

Prerequisites and planning decisions
Start with a working classic theme and a safe development or staging copy of the site. Before changing files, identify which parts of the site are currently generated by PHP and which parts editors need to change.
- Inventory templates: list files such as
single.php,page.php, archive templates,header.php,footer.php, and files intemplate-parts/. - Map dependencies: note hooks, filters, custom queries, conditional tags, shortcodes, widgets, and plugins that expect specific markup or template calls.
- Choose an editing boundary: decide whether authors will control only post content, selected patterns, a component such as a callout, or a larger area such as a footer section.
- Define design tokens: collect the approved colors, font settings, spacing scale, content widths, and layout constraints you want to expose.
- Set a rollback plan: keep the original theme version and test changes on staging before deploying to production.
Writing down the boundary is important. Without it, a project can become a confusing mixture in which users do not know whether a change belongs in a PHP file, a pattern, a template part, or the Site Editor.

1. Start from the working classic theme
Retain the theme’s existing style.css, index.php, PHP templates, enqueue logic, hooks, and filters. WordPress’s first-theme guidance shows that a classic theme can begin with index.php and style.css; a production theme will normally have many additional files.
Do not begin by deleting PHP templates or moving them into a new directory structure. The purpose of a hybrid is to preserve that foundation while adding selected capabilities.
2. Add theme.json at the theme root
Create a file named theme.json beside style.css and functions.php. WordPress supports theme.json in both classic and block themes. It is the configuration file for global settings, styles, and related editor behavior.
A minimal example might look like this:
{
"$schema": "https://schemas.wp.org/trunk/theme.json",
"version": 3,
"settings": {
"appearanceTools": true,
"color": {
"palette": [
{ "slug": "ink", "color": "#1f2937", "name": "Ink" },
{ "slug": "paper", "color": "#ffffff", "name": "Paper" },
{ "slug": "accent", "color": "#2563eb", "name": "Accent" }
]
},
"layout": {
"contentSize": "720px",
"wideSize": "1100px"
},
"spacing": {
"spacingScale": {
"operator": "add",
"increment": "1.5",
"steps": 7,
"mediumStep": "1.5"
}
}
},
"styles": {
"color": {
"text": "var:preset|color|ink",
"background": "var:preset|color|paper"
},
"typography": {
"fontFamily": "system-ui, sans-serif"
}
}
}
The exact keys you use should match the WordPress version and the design decisions for your project. Begin with a small, intentional set of settings. Exposing every possible control can produce an editor interface that is difficult to govern.

3. Configure the settings editors actually need
Use the settings section to control which design tools appear in the editor and which presets are available. Common areas include:
- Colors: named palette colors and whether custom colors are allowed.
- Typography: font families, sizes, line-height controls, and custom font-size options.
- Spacing: padding, margin, block gap, and spacing presets.
- Layout: content and wide widths that patterns and layout blocks can use.
- Gradients and appearance tools: only when the design system supports them.
Use the styles section for defaults such as text color, background color, typography, and block-specific styles. Global styles are most useful when they reinforce the same tokens used by your PHP-rendered markup. If the PHP templates use unrelated CSS values, editors may see one appearance in the editor and another on the front end.

4. Add block patterns for repeatable layouts
Create pattern files in a patterns/ directory or register patterns in PHP, depending on the organization of the theme. A pattern should solve a repeated authoring task, not merely wrap an arbitrary group of blocks.
Useful patterns include a testimonial, a product or service feature row, a newsletter callout, a two-column explanation, or a standardized hero section. Give each pattern a clear name, category, description, and viewport-aware markup. Test it at narrow and wide widths, with long headings, missing images, and translated text.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Patterns insert blocks into post or page content. They do not replace the PHP template hierarchy. An editor can customize an inserted pattern instance without changing the code-defined structure of every page that uses the theme.
5. Introduce block template parts selectively
Use a block template part when a discrete component benefits from block markup and editor control. For example, a carefully scoped announcement bar or footer content area may be easier for editors to maintain as blocks.
Keep components in PHP when they depend on existing hooks, conditional logic, custom queries, security-sensitive output, or legacy integrations. A block template part should have a clear loading path and a documented owner. Do not create a block version of a component merely because blocks are available.
6. Preserve the classic rendering contract
The theme remains classic or hybrid while its main templates stay in the PHP system and it does not introduce the defining block-theme HTML template. Continue to use PHP files for areas that rely on the classic hierarchy, such as a custom archive query or a specialized single-content layout.
Pay attention to enqueue handles, template-part calls, dynamic data, and filters used by plugins. A new block-based component must not silently remove hooks that other code expects. If a component is replaced, provide an equivalent extension point or document the intentional change.
7. Document the editing boundary
Add developer documentation for the people who will maintain the theme and editor guidance for site administrators. Specify:

- which patterns are available and what each is intended to do;
- which template parts editors may modify;
- which colors, fonts, and spacing controls are sanctioned;
- which changes require a code deployment rather than an editor save.
This boundary prevents an implementation from drifting into an unsupported, partially migrated block theme.
Recommended hybrid theme structure
A practical starting layout is:
my-hybrid-theme/
├── style.css
├── index.php
├── functions.php
├── theme.json
├── template-parts/
├── patterns/
└── assets/
The exact folders depend on the project. You may also have page and archive templates, language files, block-specific styles, tests, and build tooling. The important distinction is that the main templates remain PHP. Do not add templates/index.html or block-templates/index.html unless you intentionally want to move into block-theme architecture.

Check the front end and editor separately
- Open representative posts, pages, archives, search results, and error pages.
- Insert every new pattern and test its controls in the block editor.
- Verify that colors, typography, spacing, and layout settings from
theme.jsonappear as intended. - Check responsive behavior at narrow, medium, and wide viewports.
- Confirm that existing menus, widgets, forms, custom fields, and plugin output still work.
Test content extremes
Use long titles, empty excerpts, missing featured images, unusually long words, right-to-left or translated strings where relevant, and repeated patterns on one page. Block layouts that look correct with sample content can fail when text wraps or an optional field is absent.
Check upgrade and rollback behavior
Keep a versioned copy of the previous theme. Test an update on staging and verify that editor-saved content remains intact. If a pattern or template part is changed, understand whether existing inserted blocks are static copies or depend on a dynamic rendering path; this affects how future changes reach already-published content.
Validate the template classification
Confirm that the theme still uses its PHP templates and that you have not accidentally added an index.html block template in /templates or /block-templates. That file is a defining signal of block-theme architecture, not a harmless extra template in a hybrid project.

Adding an HTML block template accidentally
An index.html in /templates or /block-templates is a defining block-theme signal. Remove it if the project is meant to remain hybrid, or treat its addition as an intentional migration decision.
Exposing too many editor controls
Unrestricted colors, arbitrary spacing, and every typography option can undermine a design system. Start with approved presets and expand only when editors have a demonstrated need.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsReplacing PHP components without checking dependencies
Legacy hooks, filters, custom queries, and plugin integrations may depend on a PHP template part. Preserve those paths or provide a deliberate replacement and test it with the connected plugins.
Failing to distinguish patterns from templates
A pattern is an insertable layout for content. A template defines the structure used to render a site view. Using a pattern does not give editors control over the entire header, footer, or archive template.
Leaving the editing boundary undocumented
When users cannot tell whether a change belongs in code or the editor, they may overwrite a carefully designed layout or request unsupported behavior. Document ownership for each area before launch.
When to stay hybrid and when to migrate fully
Stay hybrid when the current PHP architecture is stable, integrations depend on hooks or custom logic, and you need only selected block features. It is especially appropriate when the team wants global styles or reusable layouts but is not ready to give editors control of the complete site shell.
Consider a full block-theme migration when the project’s primary requirement is Site Editor control over navigation, headers, footers, templates, and all other site areas, and the team is prepared to redesign or replace PHP-dependent integrations. Migration should be treated as an architectural project with a content, testing, and rollback plan, not as a side effect of adding theme.json.
A useful decision test is to ask who must control each area and which rendering dependencies cannot move:
| Requirement | Likely fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Keep existing PHP hierarchy and hooks | Hybrid | PHP remains the rendering foundation. |
| Provide approved global colors and typography | Hybrid | theme.json can add these controls without replacing templates. |
| Give editors a reusable landing-page section | Hybrid | A block pattern addresses the need without changing the site shell. |
| Let editors redesign the entire header and footer in the Site Editor | Block theme | That is the full-site editing model based on block templates. |
| Replace legacy integrations and conditional PHP layouts | Planned migration | The change affects architecture and compatibility, not just editor settings. |
Key points to remember
- A hybrid theme is a classic PHP theme with selected modern block features; WordPress does not define it as a separate official theme type.
theme.jsonis the central mechanism for shared settings and styles and works with classic themes.- Block themes use HTML block templates and Site Editor control, while hybrid themes retain PHP templates.
- Patterns, template parts, and global styles should be added incrementally where they solve a specific authoring or design problem.
- Define and document the editing boundary before implementation so users know what code controls and what the editor controls.
The approach was formalized in practical WordPress guidance over time; block themes arrived with WordPress 5.9 in 2022, and Troy Chaplin’s WordPress Developer Blog article “Bridging the gap: Hybrid themes” was published on December 3, 2024. These milestones describe the evolution of the tooling, but the implementation choice remains project-specific.
