GGUF is the file format used by llama.cpp-compatible software to run language models locally. A GGUF file bundles model weights with metadata such as the model architecture and tokenizer, making it portable and self-describing. Quantization changes the numerical precision of those weights so the file uses less storage and memory, usually at some quality cost. Names such as Q4_K_M describe the quantization family and an approximate precision tier; they are not model names or universal quality scores.
For most users, Q4_K_M is the practical starting point. Move to Q5_K_M or Q6_K when you have more memory and want lower quality loss. Use Q2 or Q3 only when memory is the limiting factor, and use F16, BF16, or F32 when fidelity or further conversion matters more than file size.
What a GGUF file is
GGUF is a container and runtime interchange format for local model execution. The llama.cpp documentation states that llama.cpp requires a model to be stored in GGUF format. Models distributed in other formats can be converted with the project’s conversion scripts, normally before any quantization is performed.

That metadata can include the neural-network architecture, tokenizer information and other configuration values. Because the information travels with the weights, a runner can inspect one file instead of relying on a separate collection of configuration files.

GGUF does not identify a particular model family, and it is not a quality rating. Two files can both be GGUF while representing different architectures, training objectives, context settings or instruction-tuning choices. A file may load correctly and still be a poor choice if its chat template, context configuration or intended input type does not match your application.
Where GGUF files are distributed
GGUF repositories are commonly hosted on Hugging Face. A repository may contain several quantized files, full-precision files and split shards. Download the one file (or the required shard set) that matches your hardware and runtime rather than cloning every variant in the repository.
What quantization changes
Quantization lowers the numerical precision used to store model weights. A typical workflow has two phases:

- Convert the original model to GGUF format.
- Quantize the converted GGUF file.
The llama.cpp quantization guide describes the trade-off directly: lower precision shrinks the model and can speed inference, but it can also reduce accuracy. Perplexity and KL divergence are common ways to measure that loss. The amount of degradation depends on the model and the quantization scheme; a bit number alone cannot predict quality for every architecture.
Higher-precision files need more storage, RAM and often VRAM. Lower-precision files are easier to fit into consumer hardware, but may be weaker on exact recall, coding, reasoning or instruction-following tasks. Quantization also affects throughput: a smaller file can reduce memory traffic, although actual speed depends on the CPU, GPU, offloading settings, context length and runtime implementation.
How to read names such as Q4_K_M
| Part of the name | Meaning | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Q2, Q3, Q4, Q5, Q6, Q8 | Approximate bit tier for quantized weights | Lower tiers usually make smaller files with more quality loss; higher tiers use more memory and preserve more quality |
| K | K-quant family using structured block or super-block schemes and mixed tensor types | Quality and size are determined by the complete scheme, not by the number alone |
| S, M, L | Smaller, medium or larger variant within a family | These labels describe practical tensor mixes and sizes; they are not universal quality guarantees across models |
| F16, BF16, F32 | Floating-point formats rather than integer quantization tiers | Much larger files and higher memory requirements, with more numerical precision |
| IQ | Importance-aware, or i-quant, family | Designed to improve quality at low bit rates; verify support in the specific runtime and model |
In Q4_K_M, Q4 indicates an approximately four-bit tier, K identifies the K-quant family and M selects the medium variant. It does not mean that every tensor is stored at exactly four bits, nor does it guarantee the same file size or quality across models.

What Q4, Q5, Q6 and F16 mean in practice
| Choice | Storage and memory | Expected quality behavior | Typical reason to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q2 or Q3 | Smallest among the common options | Noticeable to substantial quality loss, especially at Q2 | The model must fit a very restricted memory budget |
| Q4_K_M | Moderate size | Balanced quality for many local workloads | General-purpose starting point |
| Q5_K_M | Larger than Q4_K_M | Very low quality loss in the cited LLaMA 7B model card | More quality when additional memory is available |
| Q6_K | Larger than Q5_K_M | Extremely low quality loss in the cited LLaMA 7B model card | Quality-sensitive use with ample memory |
| Q8 | Near the high end of integer quantization sizes | Usually closer to the source model than lower-bit choices | When memory allows and integer quantization is still preferred |
| F16 or BF16 | Much larger than quantized files | High numerical fidelity | Evaluation, further conversion or workloads where precision is the priority |
| F32 | Largest of these formats | Highest listed floating-point precision | Source-quality workflows with hardware that can hold the file |
The cited LLaMA 7B model card gives concrete size examples: Q2_K is 2.83 GB and is described as having significant quality loss; Q4_K_M is 4.08 GB and is described as medium, balanced quality; Q5_K_M is 4.78 GB with very low quality loss; and Q6_K is 5.53 GB with extremely low quality loss. Those figures belong to that model and should not be treated as a universal size table.
How large GGUF files can be
Parameter count is the dominant factor, but tensor mix, vocabulary, metadata and sharding also affect the final file. The official llama.cpp size table reports these illustrative Llama 3.1 figures from 2026:
| Model | Unquantized size shown | Q4_K_M size shown |
|---|---|---|
| Llama 3.1 8B | 32.1 GB | 4.9 GB |
| Llama 3.1 70B | 280.9 GB | 43.1 GB |
| Llama 3.1 405B | 1,625.1 GB | 249.1 GB |
These are repository figures, not a fixed conversion ratio. A model may be split across multiple GGUF shards when one file is too large for convenient distribution. Every required shard must be downloaded and kept together for the runtime to load the model.

How much RAM or VRAM a GGUF model needs
Start with the displayed file size, then budget additional memory. The weights must fit in system RAM, GPU VRAM or a combination when the runtime offloads some layers to a GPU. The runtime also needs working memory for the computation graph, buffers and tokenizer, while the context window consumes more memory as you increase the number of tokens.
- A 4.9 GB Q4_K_M file for an 8B model cannot be treated as a 4.9 GB total-memory requirement; the operating system, runtime and context need headroom.
- A 43.1 GB Q4_K_M 70B file requires a substantially larger memory pool or a deliberate CPU/GPU split.
- Longer context settings increase memory use even when the model file is unchanged.
- Multimodal models add projector or encoder files and their own working buffers.
To plan a deployment, note the file size, decide how many context tokens you need, check the runtime’s offloading behavior, and leave enough unused memory to avoid swapping. If the file barely fits before a prompt is loaded, select a smaller quantization or a smaller model. Actual limits vary with hardware and runtime versions, so a file-size comparison is a planning aid rather than a benchmark.
Choosing the right quantization
Start with Q4_K_M for a balanced local model
Q4_K_M is a sensible first download when you want a broadly useful balance of size, speed and quality. It is small enough for many local systems while avoiding the larger quality losses associated with very low-bit choices. Check the repository’s notes for the specific model instead of assuming every Q4_K_M file behaves identically.

Move to Q5_K_M or Q6_K when quality matters
Choose Q5_K_M when you can spare additional memory and want lower quantization loss. Choose Q6_K when the model’s answers, code generation or instruction adherence are sensitive to small quality changes and your hardware has more headroom. The gain is not guaranteed to be equal on every benchmark, so validate with the tasks you actually run.
Use Q2 or Q3 only under a hard memory constraint
Q2 and Q3 can make an otherwise unusable model fit, but the reduction in quality may be obvious. They are compromises for constrained devices, not default recommendations when Q4 or higher fits comfortably.
Choose F16, BF16 or F32 for fidelity and conversion work
Full- or higher-precision files are useful for evaluation, archival workflows and further conversion. They demand far more storage and memory, so they are impractical for many consumer systems running large models directly.
Recommended Free Tools
Consider IQ files carefully
IQ families use importance-aware methods intended to improve low-bit quality. Availability and runtime support must be checked for the exact model and file; a theoretically attractive IQ file is not useful if your loader cannot handle it.
Model variants that are not quantization levels
A repository can offer several versions of the same base model. Quantization is only one axis.
| Variant axis | What changes | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Base versus instruction-tuned | Training objective and conversational behavior | Base models may continue text, while instruction-tuned models are optimized to follow prompts |
| Context-length configuration | Supported or advertised token window | Longer contexts can require more memory and may use different configuration metadata |
| Chat template | Role and separator syntax used to format prompts | An incompatible template can produce poor responses even when the file loads |
| Multimodal components | Vision or audio encoders and projector files | The main language-model GGUF may need a separate mmproj GGUF |
For vision and audio models, llama.cpp documents a separate multimodal projector file, commonly named with mmproj. These projector files are often kept at BF16 or Q8 because they are smaller than the main model and can be sensitive to quality loss. Download the projector that matches the model revision and follow the runtime’s multimodal loading instructions.
Quick Recap
A practical selection and setup workflow
- Identify the architecture. Confirm the model family, parameter count and whether your chosen runtime supports that architecture.
- Decide on behavior. Choose base or instruction-tuned, verify the chat template and check the advertised context configuration.
- Measure your memory budget. Add available system RAM and usable VRAM, then reserve headroom for the context window and runtime overhead.
- Pick a precision tier. Start at Q4_K_M, move to Q5_K_M or Q6_K when quality is more important, or step down to Q3/Q2 only when memory forces the decision.
- Open the repository’s file list. Download one matching GGUF file, or all shards belonging to that exact file. Do not download every quantization in the repository.
- Check auxiliary files. For a vision or audio model, obtain the matching
mmprojfile and verify its supported precision. - Load it in the compatible runner. Use the runner’s documented model path, template and context settings. If the model loads but answers look malformed, recheck the template and variant before changing quantization.
- Test representative prompts. Compare the tasks you care about—such as coding, extraction or long-context use—rather than relying only on a file name or a generic benchmark.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Confusing GGUF with a model family: GGUF is the container format. Check the architecture and training variant separately.
- Assuming Q4 means exactly four bits everywhere: K-quant schemes use blocks, super-blocks and mixed tensor types, so the complete suffix matters.
- Using file size as total RAM: reserve memory for the operating system, runtime, buffers and context.
- Choosing a file that loads but chats badly: verify the instruction-tuned variant and chat template.
- Ignoring multimodal projectors: vision and audio models may require a separate matching
mmprojGGUF. - Downloading a whole repository: select the single quantization and shard set that fits your deployment.
- Expecting one quantization to be universally best: quality, speed and memory results depend on the model, hardware, context length and runtime support.
