A Nintendo Switch 2 game-key card is a physical card that unlocks a game whose full data must be downloaded to the console or a microSD Express card. You need an internet connection and enough free storage for the initial download, and the card must be inserted to play. Nintendo says the game can be started offline after its first launch.

What is a game-key card?

It is a physical Nintendo Switch 2 game card, but it does not hold the full game. Instead, the card contains a key that activates the software; the game data is downloaded to the console or supported storage. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa described it as a card that “stores a key to activate the software” in Nintendo’s June 2025 shareholder Q&A.

Nintendo Switch 2 also supports standard game cards. Look for the key-card icon on the package and check the specific edition’s listing: physical Switch 2 releases do not all use the same format. Nintendo’s key-card guide also shows where to find the required download space on packaging.

How do game-key cards work?

  1. Insert the game-key card into the Nintendo Switch 2.
  2. Follow the HOME Menu prompts to download the game data. The download requires internet access and enough free space in system memory or on a microSD Express card. Check the package or game listing for the required space.
  3. Launch the game with the card inserted. Nintendo says an internet connection is needed when launching it for the first time; after that, the game can be started without internet, as described in Nintendo Support’s game-key card overview.

A Nintendo Account is not required to download the game data, according to Nintendo Support. The game may still require an internet connection for its own online features or services.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

Do game-key cards include the game?

They include the physical key card, not the full game data. You must download that data before playing. A standard game card, by contrast, contains the full game data on the card, so it does not require the same initial game-data download.

What to check Game-key card Standard game card
Full game data on card No; download the game data Yes
Internet for initial game-data download Required Not required for game data stored on the card
Local storage for game data Enough space for the download is required The full game data is on the card
Physical card needed to play Yes Yes

Do I need internet to play?

You need internet to download the game data. Nintendo also says the first launch requires internet; once the game has been launched for the first time, it can be started offline. That applies to starting the downloaded game, not necessarily to every feature: online multiplayer and other network services may still require a connection.

Does the card need to stay inserted?

Yes. The game-key card must be inserted to start and play the downloaded game. Downloading the data does not turn the card into a digital purchase that can be played without the physical card.

Nintendo’s regional key-card guide says that using the same console again requires inserting the card but does not require an internet connection. To use a different console, its instructions say to repeat the earlier process, including downloading the game there. Check the guide and listing for the region and edition you are buying.

Why are some Switch 2 games sold as game-key cards?

Nintendo’s stated reason is that game-key cards are one way to accommodate larger game-data sizes on Switch 2 compared with Nintendo Switch. Furukawa explained that rationale in the June 2025 shareholder Q&A. He also said Nintendo would continue working with publishers and that software can be released in different formats. This explains Nintendo’s stated rationale; it does not establish why a particular publisher chose the format for a particular game.
