Existential risks are threats that could either destroy humanity (or Earth-originating intelligent life) or permanently and drastically eliminate its future potential. Global catastrophic risks are broader: they can cause death, destruction, or a profound loss of well-being across the world, but humanity may still recover. The categories overlap, and no universally accepted threshold separates them.
The practical distinction is not simply how dramatic an event sounds. Assess a scenario by its global scope, severity, permanence, and prospects for recovery—and state which definition of “existential” you are using.
The short answer: existential risk is the terminal end of a wider category
A global catastrophe can kill millions, collapse governments, destroy infrastructure, or set civilization back for decades while leaving survivors able to rebuild. An existential catastrophe is more final: extinction, or a permanent and drastic curtailment of humanity’s long-term potential.

It includes a non-extinction outcome if the loss of future potential is both permanent and drastic.

“Global catastrophic risk” has a less settled meaning. Oxford Academic’s introduction to Global Catastrophic Risks describes a risk with the potential to cause death and destruction on a global scale. Other scholarly accounts emphasize a major worldwide loss of well-being or a severe setback to civilization. Because the literature uses different thresholds, the safest wording is that existential risks are often treated as the most severe subset of global catastrophic risks, while acknowledging that some authors use the terms almost interchangeably.
Why the boundary is debated
Neither term has a single legal or scientific cutoff. Definitions differ over at least three questions:
- What counts as “global”? Some definitions require effects across most of the world; others focus on consequences for humanity as a whole even if the initial event is geographically concentrated.
- What counts as a terminal outcome? Extinction is clear, but permanent global domination, irreversible civilizational collapse, or the loss of humanity’s ability to realize its future may also qualify under broader definitions.
- How much future potential must be lost? “Potential” can mean population, knowledge, freedom, technological progress, cultural possibilities, or the ability to colonize space. There is no universally agreed numerical threshold.
The 2024 article “Concepts of Existential Catastrophe” in The Monist surveys these competing definitions and highlights the ambiguity around non-extinction cases. A 2025 bibliometric review in Earth System Dynamics likewise reports substantial variation in how researchers label global catastrophic and existential risks.

Four axes that make the distinction concrete
Instead of relying on a label, examine the scenario along four dimensions. Bostrom’s framework separates scope and intensity; probability is a separate consideration, not part of that basic two-axis classification.
| Axis | Global catastrophic risk | Existential risk |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Can be local, national, or global; a global version affects people and systems worldwide. | Concerns humanity or Earth-originating intelligent life as a whole. |
| Severity | Enormous death, destruction, suffering, or loss of well-being may occur, but survival remains possible. | Extinction or a comparably terminal outcome, such as permanent and drastic loss of future potential. |
| Permanence | Damage may last years or generations but can eventually be reversed. | The adverse condition cannot be reversed in the relevant sense. |
| Recovery | Survivors retain a plausible route to rebuild institutions, knowledge, and productive capacity. | No credible route remains to restore humanity’s former or expected long-term potential. |
| Probability | Estimated separately; a low-probability event can still be catastrophic. | Estimated separately; the label does not imply that the event is likely. |
“Endurable” in this framework does not mean acceptable, harmless, or minor. A global recession or moderate global warming can be globally damaging yet still leave a path to recovery. Bostrom uses examples like these to show why worldwide impact alone does not make an event existential.
What Bostrom’s existential-risk definition includes
Extinction
The clearest case is the annihilation of Earth-originating intelligent life. If no humans or descendants survive, there is no recovery path and no remaining agent able to realize humanity’s future.

Permanent, drastic curtailment of potential
Under Bostrom’s wider definition, everyone need not die. A scenario could qualify if it permanently prevents humanity from achieving most of its future possibilities—for example, by locking civilization into an irreversible condition that eliminates its capacity for meaningful development. Whether a particular dictatorship, collapse, or loss of freedom reaches that threshold is a matter of definition and argument, not a settled checklist result.

A disaster can kill an immense number of people yet leave a surviving population capable of rebuilding. Conversely, a smaller surviving population could face an existential outcome if it is permanently unable to recover or preserve its future potential. Scope and permanence therefore matter alongside immediate mortality.
Global catastrophic risk is broader and outcome-focused
Global catastrophic risk describes the potential outcome rather than one particular cause. A risk belongs in this broad family when a hazard could produce worldwide death, destruction, or a major loss of well-being. Some accounts center on significant loss of life; others include severe disruption of civilization even when most people survive.

This breadth is useful for policy. Governments can prepare for a pandemic, nuclear exchange, climate tipping process, asteroid impact, or advanced artificial intelligence without first agreeing that every possible scenario from that hazard would be existential. The same hazard can produce different outcomes:
| Hazard | Recoverable global catastrophe | Possible existential outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Pandemic | Worldwide illness, deaths, and economic disruption followed by restoration of health systems. | A pathogen or response failure that eliminates humanity or leaves no viable route to recovery. |
| Nuclear war | Regional destruction with global economic and political shock, followed by reconstruction. | A chain of escalation and secondary effects that destroys civilization permanently or annihilates humanity. |
| Climate change | Severe global warming, displacement, food losses, and long-term economic damage while civilization adapts. | A climate pathway that permanently removes humanity’s ability to sustain or develop its future potential. |
| Advanced AI | Large-scale labor, security, or political disruption from which institutions eventually recover. | A loss-of-control scenario that causes extinction or an irreversible, drastic reduction in humanity’s future potential. |
The cells in the last column are scenario types, not predictions. A hazard name alone cannot establish that its consequences would be existential.
Examples and important boundary cases
Natural hazards discussed as possible existential risks
The 2022 review “The existential risk space of climate change” in Climatic Change lists asteroid impacts and supervolcanic eruptions among natural existential-risk examples. An impact or eruption would qualify only if its consequences met the relevant extinction or permanent-loss threshold; smaller events could remain catastrophic without being existential.

Human-caused hazards
The same review discusses nuclear war, pandemics, climate change, and artificial intelligence as anthropogenic risk areas. These are fields of concern, not verdicts about every war, outbreak, emissions pathway, or AI system. Classification depends on the specific chain of events, its worldwide effects, and whether recovery remains possible.
Why severe historical disasters may not be existential
Within the framework used by the 2022 review, the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and COVID-19 were not treated as threats to humanity’s survival, despite their immense human harm. That judgment belongs to the authors’ stated framework; it should not be turned into a universal rule that no tsunami or pandemic could ever be existential. A future event with different scale, persistence, or recovery prospects could receive a different classification.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to classify a proposed scenario
When someone calls an event “existential,” apply the following procedure before accepting the label:
- Describe the hazard separately from the outcome. Write “a pandemic could cause…” rather than treating “pandemic” as synonymous with extinction.
- Specify the population and geography affected. Is the effect local, national, worldwide, or directed at humanity as a whole?
- Describe the worst relevant consequences. Include deaths, institutional collapse, loss of knowledge, ecological damage, or restrictions on future development.
- Test permanence. Could survivors eventually restore population, knowledge, governance, and productive capacity, or is the loss irreversible?
- State the definition in use. Are you using an extinction-only definition, or Bostrom’s broader definition that includes permanent and drastic loss of potential?
- Evaluate recovery, not just initial damage. A devastated world may still have a recovery path; a less visibly destructive outcome may permanently close that path.
- Keep probability separate. Do not infer likelihood from the label. Explain uncertainty and evidence independently.
Probability is a separate question
A risk combines a possible adverse outcome with uncertainty about whether it will occur. The existential-versus-catastrophic distinction describes the scale and character of the outcome; it does not provide a probability. A low-probability extinction scenario can warrant serious preventive work because its consequences are irreversible, while a high-probability global disruption may remain non-existential if recovery is robust.
No single extinction percentage or ranking is necessary to understand the conceptual difference, and published estimates often depend heavily on assumptions, time horizons, and model choices. Treat any numerical estimate as a claim requiring its own method and source rather than as a settled fact implied by the category.
Common mistakes in using the terms
- “Global” equals “existential.” Worldwide harm can be severe yet recoverable.
- Every event from a named hazard is existential. The same hazard can produce outcomes ranging from manageable disruption to extinction.
- Existential means everyone dies immediately. Broader definitions include permanent, drastic loss of future potential without instantaneous universal death.
- Endurable means acceptable. Bostrom’s “endurable” category can still involve intolerable suffering and enormous losses.
- A dramatic scenario proves high probability. Severity and likelihood are different dimensions.
- One definition is universally authoritative. State whether you are using an extinction-only account or a broader account such as Bostrom’s.
