Dark patterns in games are interface and monetization choices that can steer players toward spending, hide the real cost or terms of a purchase, or make declining an offer harder than accepting it. They include confusing purchase buttons, virtual currencies that mask cash prices, paid random rewards, fake urgency, repeated prompts and misleading disclosures. Loot boxes are one example—not the definition of dark patterns.
What “dark pattern” means in a game
A dark pattern is a design choice that takes advantage of how people make decisions. In a game, it may reduce the effort needed to buy, increase the effort needed to refuse, or present information in a way that makes a purchase seem cheaper, safer or more urgent than it really is. The design does not force every player to spend, and players do not all respond in the same way. The concern is that the interface can systematically tilt a decision.
It helps to separate four different questions:
- Design pattern: What does the screen, button, currency or offer do?
- Possible influence: Why might that design increase the chance of a purchase?
- Observed harm: Is there evidence of unwanted charges, complaints or other consumer loss?
- Legal finding: Has a regulator or court determined that a particular practice violated a rule?
Those categories are not interchangeable. A regulator can find a specific interface unlawful without proving that every similar feature causes overspending, and a potentially pressuring design can exist without a published finding that it broke the law.
Four ways game interfaces can push spending
1. Confusing controls and frictionless purchases
A purchase flow can be risky when the button that confirms a charge looks like an ordinary navigation or gameplay control, when labels change from one screen to another, or when a confirmation step is missing. A player may think they are selecting an item, closing a window or continuing play while actually authorizing a payment. Saved payment details make the transaction nearly instantaneous, leaving little time to notice the price or reconsider.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) identified this issue in its 2023 finalized order concerning Fortnite. The agency said Epic’s “counterintuitive, inconsistent, and confusing button configuration led players to incur unwanted charges based on the press of a single button.” The FTC also said children could make purchases without parental consent. The order required $245 million for consumer refunds. This is an enforcement action about the practices and facts in that case, not a ruling that every game with one-click purchasing has committed the same violation.
From a player’s perspective, warning signs include a purchase button that is visually identical to a “next” button, a price shown only on an earlier screen, or a cancel option that is hidden behind several menus while buying takes one tap. A clear flow should show the item, the amount in real-world currency, the account being charged and a final confirmation before the charge is submitted.
2. Virtual currencies that hide the cash price
Many games sell packs of coins, gems or other tokens. The player then spends those tokens on a skin, upgrade or boost. Because the item is priced in an in-game unit rather than dollars, euros or another currency, the cash cost is less obvious at the moment of purchase. A token balance can also leave a small remainder, encouraging another top-up so that the player does not feel the first purchase was wasted.

That is a policy position, not a single rule that applies identically in every country. It reflects a straightforward consumer question: before confirming, can the player tell exactly how much money the item will cost?
To calculate a price, divide the cost of the currency bundle by the number of units it contains, then account for the number of units actually required for the item. If a bundle includes more currency than the item costs, record both the effective cost of the item and the unused balance. A game that shows both “1,200 gems” and “$9.99” at the purchase decision gives substantially clearer information than one that shows only gems.

3. Random rewards and repeated attempts
A loot box is a paid or earnable package whose contents are selected at random. The FTC staff’s 2020 account of its loot-box workshop described players buying boxes for a small fee or obtaining them through play, then receiving an uncertain reward. The European Union’s 2020 study on loot boxes and younger consumers examined the issue through consumer-protection and behavioral research as well as the gambling debate.
Randomness changes the decision from “Do I want this item at this price?” to “Do I want another attempt at getting one of several possible items?” If a player wants a particular rare reward, each unsuccessful opening can make another purchase feel like the next logical step. That is a mechanism for repeated spending, not proof that every loot box produces harmful behavior or that every loot box legally qualifies as gambling.

A disclosure that says only “rare items may appear” does not tell a player the chance of receiving a specific reward. Probability disclosures can also be difficult to use if they are buried in a secondary menu or written in percentages that are not connected to the price of an attempt.
4. Urgency, nagging and pressure cues
Some offers rely on pressure rather than confusion. A countdown may imply that a discount or item will disappear, even when the offer routinely returns. A game may repeatedly interrupt play with purchase prompts, highlight what friends supposedly own, or present a sequence of increasingly difficult “no thanks” screens. These techniques can exploit impatience, fear of missing out or the desire to return to the game without another interruption.
A European Commission staff working document published in 2024 reported examples such as fake urgency and nagging in its review of mobile games. The scope matters: those observations concern the reviewed mobile-game sample, not all games and not PC titles generally. The document is evidence that these patterns have been observed, not a prevalence estimate for the entire industry.

Urgency is not automatically deceptive. A genuinely time-limited event can be communicated honestly if the end time, time zone and consequences are clear. The problem is a countdown that resets, an “only today” message that reappears tomorrow, or a prompt that withholds normal play until the player responds.
How the pressure works in practice

In an August 2024 consumer advisory, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) described two related risks: stored-payment convenience can make repeated purchases easy, and a loot-box presentation may suggest that a player nearly obtained a desired rare item. The CFPB presented these as consumer risks, not as a claim that every game uses near-miss displays or that every player is affected.
What the Fortnite enforcement action does—and does not—show
The FTC’s March 2023 announcement concerned a finalized order involving Epic’s Fortnite. According to the agency, confusing and inconsistent button configurations led to unwanted charges from a single button press, and children could buy items without parental consent. The order required $245 million in refunds to consumers.
Three limits are important when applying this example:
- It is a US enforcement action involving a named company, game and set of practices.
- The refund amount comes from that finalized order; it is not an estimate of losses across the game industry.
- The order does not make every dark pattern, one-click purchase or loot box automatically illegal. Whether a practice violates a law depends on the jurisdiction, the facts, disclosures, age of the player and other circumstances.
The case is useful because it shows how a seemingly small interface decision can become a consumer-protection issue when the result is an unwanted charge and the flow does not give a meaningful opportunity to understand or stop it.

Why children and families need extra protection
Children may not distinguish a virtual token from money, understand probability, recognize a marketing prompt or realize that a saved payment method belongs to an adult. They can also be more affected by social comparison, limited-time language and the desire to continue playing. A purchase made during play may therefore be both technically easy and difficult for a child to evaluate.
The UK government’s updated 2025 guidance reports industry commitments that include technological controls to prevent under-18s from acquiring paid loot boxes without parental knowledge or consent, understandable presentation and clear probability disclosures. These are UK guidance and industry commitments, not universal legal requirements in every country.
Families should check the platform’s account settings, require a password or biometric confirmation for every purchase, remove stored payment details from child accounts where practical, and review transaction histories. Controls reduce risk but do not replace clear in-game information. A child can still be pressured by prompts even when a payment is blocked, and an adult can still make an unintended purchase if the confirmation screen is confusing.

United States
The FTC’s Fortnite order illustrates enforcement against specific unwanted-charge practices. The FTC’s 2020 loot-box workshop account summarized concerns about unclear terms and disclosures; it was a staff perspective, not a binding rule declaring that all loot boxes are unlawful.
European Union
The European Parliament’s 2023 resolution said consumers “should have all the necessary information about an online video game, including on the presence of in-game purchases such as loot boxes and other apparently randomised in-game purchases.” It also called for the real-world value of virtual currencies to be shown clearly. A parliamentary resolution expresses policy direction; applicable duties still depend on the law of the country and the facts of a particular transaction.

The European Commission’s 2024 staff document recorded dark-pattern examples in reviewed mobile games. The EU’s 2020 study recommended treating loot-box concerns as consumer-protection issues as well as part of the gambling debate, especially where minors may be affected. Neither document establishes a single causal effect or a universal legal classification.
United Kingdom
The 2025 UK update describes voluntary, industry-led measures for paid loot boxes, including parental controls, understandable presentation and probability information. Readers should verify which protections apply to their account and jurisdiction rather than assuming that guidance is enforceable law.
A practical checklist for evaluating a game’s monetization
Use these questions before buying, and revisit them after a major update:

Look for the amount in your local currency on the final confirmation screen, not only the token price.
- Is the reward certain or random? If it is random, find the complete pool, odds, duplicate treatment and any guarantee.
- Is the offer genuinely time-limited? Note the stated end date and time zone. Be cautious if the same “last chance” offer returns repeatedly.
- Can you decline without disruption? A normal “no thanks” control should not be hidden, misleading or followed by an endless chain of prompts.
- How many confirmations are required? Check that the item, price and payment account are displayed before the final authorization.
- Could a child buy without permission? Enable platform approval, spending limits or password confirmation and review who can access the account.
- Is there a clear refund route? Save receipts and learn the platform’s refund process before a problem occurs.
If a purchase was unwanted, stop further transactions, secure the account, document the screens and contact the platform or payment provider promptly. Keep in mind that refund rights and deadlines vary by country, platform and payment method.
How to distinguish a concerning pattern from ordinary monetization
Charging for optional cosmetic items is not, by itself, a dark pattern. A straightforward offer can show the item, full cash price, terms, availability and a clear confirmation. A random reward can also be presented transparently when the odds, contents and price are easy to find and the player is not misled about the result.
Concern rises when several features combine: a token system hides the cash amount; a rare reward is random and its odds are difficult to locate; a countdown claims scarcity; the purchase uses a saved card with one ambiguous button; and the game repeatedly interrupts play after a refusal. The combination increases uncertainty and reduces the time and effort available for an informed decision.
When comparing games or reporting a problem, record the platform, country, player’s age, date, exact wording, currency, number of confirmation steps and whether the reward was random. Those details help separate a general design criticism from a specific consumer-protection complaint.
