Clonal animals produce offspring without the usual genetic contribution of two parents. Depending on the species, a new animal can form when its parent divides, grows a bud, breaks into a regenerating fragment, or produces an embryo from an unfertilized egg. These routes are all asexual, but they do not all create perfect genetic copies.

Clonality describes a genetic relationship rather than one universal reproductive method. Mutations, chromosome behavior and the details of each species’ life cycle can make offspring identical, nearly identical or genetically different in limited ways.

What “clonal animal” means

A clone is an organism genetically identical to another organism, or a group of genetically identical organisms descended asexually from one ancestor. In animals, the word usually refers to individuals produced without the normal fusion of sperm and egg from two parents. The resulting lineage can consist of copies of one original genome, although new mutations and cellular processes may introduce differences.

That definition is narrower than “asexual reproduction.” Asexual reproduction includes any reproductive process that does not require the usual fusion of reproductive cells from two parents. Some asexual routes preserve a genome almost exactly; others rearrange or duplicate chromosomes, so the offspring is not a flawless copy of its mother. It is therefore inaccurate to treat “asexual,” “parthenogenetic” and “clonal” as interchangeable terms.

Clonality can occur in solitary animals and in colonies. A bud that detaches from a parent is a separate individual, while a coral bud may remain attached and add another genetically matching unit to a colony. The same genetic relationship can therefore produce either independent animals or a connected modular body.

How clonal animals reproduce

The main mechanisms differ in what part of the parent becomes the next generation. The table separates the starting material, the fate of the offspring and the degree of genetic identity that can be expected.

Mechanism What starts the new animal What happens next Examples Genetic result
Fission The whole body divides into sections Each section regenerates missing structures Planarian flatworms; some sea anemones and sea cucumbers Usually a close clone, subject to mutations and species-specific biology
Budding An outgrowth, or bud, on the parent The bud enlarges and may detach, or remain attached in a colony Hydra; some corals Typically genetically matching parent tissue
Fragmentation A separated piece of the body A sufficiently complete fragment regenerates into an individual Some sponges, cnidarians, flatworms, echinoderms and annelids; some sea stars Depends on the species and fragment; not every piece can regenerate
Parthenogenesis An unfertilized egg The egg develops into an embryo without fertilization Water fleas, rotifers, aphids, stick insects, ants, wasps, bees, and some reptiles, amphibians and fish May be haploid, diploid, identical or genetically varied, depending on the cellular mechanism
Polyembryony One fertilized egg The embryo splits into multiple embryos Discussed as a clonal vertebrate mode Produces genetically identical siblings, but it is not asexual egg development

Fission: one body becomes two or more

In fission, an animal divides into sections and each resulting part restores structures it lacks. A planarian flatworm can split across its body, after which the pieces regenerate heads, tails and other missing tissues. Some sea anemones and sea cucumbers also use forms of division.

Fission is not simply “cutting an animal in half.” The species must possess the developmental instructions and regenerative tissues needed to rebuild a complete body. The position of the split, the size of each section and the animal’s physiological condition can determine whether regeneration succeeds.

Budding: an offspring grows from the parent

Budding begins as a small outgrowth on the parent. In Hydra, the bud develops body structures while attached, then generally separates as an independent animal. In some corals, buds remain connected, adding genetically matching units to a colony rather than leaving as solitary offspring.

Because the bud is built from parental tissue, its genome normally matches the parent’s genome apart from mutations that arise during cell division. Colonial budding can expand a patch or reef locally without requiring a mate, while detached buds disperse as separate individuals.

Fragmentation: a piece regenerates

Fragmentation occurs when a body part becomes separated and grows into a complete animal. It is reported in some sponges, cnidarians, flatworms, echinoderms and annelids, and some sea stars can regenerate an entire animal from an appropriate section.

The terms “fission” and “fragmentation” overlap in ordinary speech but describe different starting events. Fission is an organized division of the body; fragmentation emphasizes that a detached piece can continue living and regenerate. A fragment must contain enough of the right tissues, and the ability is restricted to particular species. It does not mean that any piece of any animal can become a clone.

Parthenogenesis: an unfertilized egg develops

Parthenogenesis is development from an egg without fertilization. Matthew K. Fujita, Sonal Singhal, Tuliana O. Brunes and Jose A. Maldonado define it in their 2020 vertebrate review as “asexual reproduction without any required participation from males.” The process occurs in many invertebrates, including water fleas, rotifers, aphids, stick insects, ants, wasps and bees, and in certain reptiles, amphibians and fish.

The genetic outcome depends on how the egg is produced and how its chromosomes are handled. An offspring can be haploid, carrying one chromosome set, or diploid, carrying two. Some mechanisms restore chromosome number by duplicating or combining egg-derived material; others retain more variation. Consequently, a parthenogenetic offspring is not automatically an exact genetic copy of its mother.

Parthenogenesis also does not imply that every offspring is female. Sex determination differs among lineages. In some species, parthenogenesis produces mostly or exclusively females; in others, males can occur, and some animals switch between sexual and asexual phases when environmental conditions change.

Clonal reproduction versus sexual reproduction

Asexual reproduction lets one individual produce descendants without finding a mate. That can be advantageous when a population is sparse, when mates are unavailable or when rapid increase is valuable. Budding, fission and fragmentation can create new animals directly from existing body tissue, while parthenogenesis can turn an egg supply into offspring without sperm.

Sexual reproduction combines genetic material from two parents. The resulting variety can help a population respond to parasites, diseases, predators or changing climate and habitat. Asexual lineages may reproduce quickly in stable conditions but can share the same vulnerabilities because their genomes are similar.

These are broad evolutionary trade-offs, not universal rules. Some animals alternate between sexual and asexual reproduction, using clonality when conditions favor rapid expansion and sex when genetic mixing becomes useful. The success of either strategy depends on life history, ecology, mutation and the costs of producing or locating mates.

Are clonal offspring always genetically identical?

“Clone” is useful shorthand, but biological identity is rarely absolute over many generations. A mutation that appears in one branch of a lineage can be inherited by descendants of that branch and not by others. Environmental effects can also make genetically matching animals differ in size, color, behavior or timing, even when their DNA is nearly the same.

Parthenogenesis is especially variable. Some forms produce offspring that are close copies of the mother; others involve meiosis or chromosome restoration that creates new combinations within the mother’s genome. The correct description must therefore name the species and mechanism rather than assuming that every unfertilized egg produces an identical daughter.

Clonal and quasi-clonal vertebrates

Vertebrates show several specialized forms of clonality or partial clonality. James C. Avise’s 2015 review discusses parthenogenesis alongside gynogenesis, hybridogenesis, kleptogenesis and polyembryony. These terms describe different ways that genomes are transmitted or duplicated, so they should not be collapsed into one process.

Gynogenesis and hybridogenesis

Gynogenesis and hybridogenesis are specialized reproductive systems in which parental genomes are handled in unusual ways. The 2015 review treats them as part of a wider vertebrate landscape of clonal or quasi-clonal reproduction, but the mechanisms are sufficiently distinct that a claim about one cannot be transferred automatically to the others. In advanced biology texts, they are analyzed by tracing which genome is retained, which is excluded and whether sperm contributes genetic material or only activates development.

Polyembryony

Polyembryony begins with a fertilized egg. The single early embryo divides into multiple embryos that are genetically identical siblings. This is clonality within one generation, but it is not parthenogenesis because fertilization occurred. The distinction matters when comparing how many parents contributed genetic material.

How common are all-female vertebrate lineages?

Avise reported approximately 100 all-female vertebrate “species” or biotypes whose females produce daughters genetically identical to one another and to their mother, barring new mutations. The quotation marks are important: many of these lineages may not satisfy the usual biological definition of a species because they have unusual origins, hybrid ancestry or limited long-term reproductive independence. The figure is an approximate count from a 2015 review, not a current exhaustive census.

How to tell the mechanisms apart

When a claim says an animal “clones itself,” ask five questions:

  • Can one individual reproduce? If two parents are required, the process is sexual even if the offspring later split into identical siblings.
  • What is the starting material? A divided body, a bud, a detached fragment and an unfertilized egg indicate different mechanisms.
  • How much genetic identity is expected? Tissue-derived offspring are generally close genetic matches; parthenogenetic outcomes depend on chromosome behavior.
  • Do offspring separate? A bud may detach, while coral or other colonial units can remain connected.
  • What ecological problem does the mode solve? Rapid local expansion, mate scarcity and regeneration favor different strategies than long-term adaptation to changing conditions.

This checklist prevents common errors such as calling every regenerating animal a parthenogen, treating fission and fragmentation as synonyms, or assuming that all clonal animals are female.

Common misconceptions

“All clonal animals are female.”

False. Some parthenogenetic lineages are female-only, but sex determination varies, and clonality also occurs through body division, budding and fragmentation in animals that are not described as female-only.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Every parthenogenetic offspring is a perfect copy.”

False. Haploid and diploid outcomes, meiosis, chromosome restoration and new mutations can produce differences. The offspring may be genetically close to its mother without being identical at every position in the genome.

“Any fragment can regenerate.”

False. Regeneration depends on species, fragment size, tissue type and physiological conditions. Most animals do not reproduce by having arbitrary pieces grow into complete individuals.

“Clonal reproduction is always better.”

False. Asexual reproduction can be fast and effective in stable settings, while sexual reproduction supplies combinations that may help populations cope with change. Neither strategy universally dominates.

Why clonality matters in biology

Clonal animals show that reproduction is not limited to mating and fertilization. Their life cycles connect development, regeneration and population growth: the same cellular systems that rebuild a missing body region can sometimes produce a complete new individual. Studying these animals helps biologists distinguish genetic identity from physical similarity, understand how colonies expand and test why sexual reproduction remains widespread despite the efficiency of cloning-like strategies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a diagram-based introduction to animal reproductive modes, OpenStax’s Concepts of Biology, Section 18.1, “How Animals Reproduce,” provides educational background. Avise’s 2015 review and Fujita, Singhal, Brunes and Maldonado’s 2020 review supply more specialized discussions of vertebrate clonality and parthenogenesis.

The practical answer

Clonal animals reproduce asexually, but the route depends on the lineage. A planarian may divide and regenerate, Hydra may bud, a sea star fragment may rebuild a body, and an unfertilized egg may develop through parthenogenesis. These descendants are often genetically identical or nearly identical, yet mutations and chromosome mechanics mean that “clone” is a relationship to evaluate, not a guarantee of perfect sameness.
