Climate tipping points are thresholds in particular parts of the Earth system beyond which feedbacks can make change self-sustaining and produce a qualitatively different state. They are not one planet-wide on/off switch. A cascade is possible when a transition in one system changes conditions in another, increasing (or sometimes decreasing) its chance of crossing a threshold.
The science supports a clear direction of risk: abrupt or irreversible changes become more likely as global warming increases. It does not support a single timetable for every system. Threshold estimates, confidence, response times and interactions differ among ice sheets, coral reefs, forests, permafrost and ocean circulation.
What a climate tipping point means
The Global Tipping Points Report defines a tipping point as the threshold at which change in a tipping system becomes self-sustaining after a forcing threshold is passed, producing a qualitative state change through one or more positive, or amplifying, feedback loops. The large component that can undergo this transition is often called a tipping element; the threshold itself is the tipping point.
Forcing can include greenhouse-gas-driven warming, freshwater entering the ocean, drought, fire or deforestation. Crossing a threshold does not necessarily mean an instant transformation. Some systems can continue changing for centuries or millennia after the threshold is passed, while others can shift much faster.

Why the distinction matters
- A threshold estimate is not the same as proof that a whole system has already shifted.
- A central estimate is not a precise trigger that applies identically everywhere.
- The risk of crossing a threshold is different from the timing or eventual size of the resulting change.
- Individual tipping elements can interact, but those interactions are not automatic dominoes.
How positive feedback turns a push into a self-sustaining change
An initial disturbance may be modest, but a feedback can return an amplified disturbance to the system. If the amplification is strong enough, the system no longer needs the original push to keep moving toward a new state.
Ice-sheet melt and elevation
The Global Tipping Points Report uses an ice-sheet melt-elevation loop as a straightforward example. Warming increases surface melt. As the ice surface loses height, it sits in warmer air, which increases melt further. That additional melt lowers the surface again. The loop can continue even if the original warming changes only slowly.
Feedback is not the same as runaway change
Amplifying feedbacks operate alongside limiting processes such as snowfall, ocean heat exchange, cloud effects and changing geometry. A tipping assessment asks whether the net feedbacks can sustain a qualitative transition, not whether every part of the system accelerates without limit.

More than 25 Earth-system tipping points had been identified in the 2023 Global Tipping Points Report, using evidence from past changes, observations and computer models. The candidates below are not equally well established, and none should be treated as already doomed simply because it appears on a list.
| Tipping element | Main forcing | Potential sustaining feedback | Timescale and evidence | Interaction status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Greenland Ice Sheet | Atmospheric and ocean warming | Surface melt lowers ice into warmer air; meltwater can also affect ocean circulation | Threshold risk rises with warming; substantial loss can unfold over very long timescales | Can influence the AMOC and interact with Antarctica through sea-level change |
| West Antarctic Ice Sheet | Ocean warming beneath and around ice shelves | Ice retreat can expose thicker ice to ocean-driven melting and destabilize grounding lines | Potentially abrupt in parts, but total loss is a long-term process with uncertain timing | Linked to Greenland through global sea-level and ocean responses |
| Warm-water coral reefs | Marine heat stress and other local pressures | Repeated bleaching reduces coral cover and ecosystem recovery capacity | The 2025 update gives a 1.2°C central estimate for a thermal tipping point; reefs differ locally | Climate and local pollution or fishing pressures can combine; not every reef has collapsed |
| Amazon rainforest | Warming, drought, fire and deforestation | Forest loss can reduce moisture recycling, making further drying and fire more likely | The 2025 update reports risk below 2°C when deforestation and climate change are combined | Response to AMOC change remains unresolved, with studies finding both drying and stabilizing possibilities |
| Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) and Sub-Polar Gyre | Warming and freshwater input, especially from ice melt | Freshwater can reduce the density that helps drive sinking in the North Atlantic | Recent modeling cannot rule out tipping at current warming, but observations and models are limited | Acts as a potential mediator for several other tipping interactions |
| Permafrost | Arctic warming and ground-temperature change | Thaw can release carbon dioxide and methane, adding greenhouse forcing | Local abrupt thaw is documented as a risk; no single synchronized global thaw threshold is established | Emissions can amplify warming that stresses other systems |
How a tipping cascade can develop
A cascade occurs when a change in one tipping element alters conditions in another and makes that second transition more likely. The Global Tipping Points Report describes this as a situation in which the consequences of passing one tipping point make connected systems more or less likely to tip. The phrase “domino effect” is useful only if it is qualified: some links amplify change, some damp it, and many remain uncertain.

A conditional Greenland–AMOC–Antarctic pathway
- Greenland loses ice and adds freshwater to the North Atlantic.
- Freshening can weaken the density-driven sinking that helps power the AMOC.
- A weaker AMOC would redistribute heat and rainfall. It could cool the North Atlantic region, potentially reducing Greenland melt in one feedback, while shifting heat toward the Southern Ocean and potentially increasing stress on the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.
- Changing sea level and ocean circulation can alter the stress experienced by both ice sheets.
Every step is conditional. A weaker AMOC does not mechanically guarantee a Greenland or Antarctic transition, and the magnitude and direction of regional effects depend on the state of the atmosphere, ocean and ice. The OECD synthesis identifies these pathways while emphasizing that they retain substantial uncertainty.
Why interactions can stabilize as well as destabilize
Cooling near Greenland after an AMOC weakening could provide a stabilizing influence on that ice sheet even while the circulation change creates warming elsewhere. The 2025 Global Tipping Points update found that most of the 20 interactions it assessed were destabilizing, but some were stabilizing. Its assessment also identifies the AMOC in 45% of those 20 interactions. That percentage describes the report’s selected interaction set, not all possible links in nature.
The Amazon and AMOC: an unresolved example
Studies considered by the OECD project both stabilizing effects and Amazon drying after an AMOC change. Because the direction is not settled, it is scientifically inaccurate to state that an AMOC transition must trigger Amazon dieback.
What current assessments say about major candidates
Ice sheets: long commitments, not instant disappearance
The IPCC Sixth Assessment Synthesis Report (2023) says the risks of abrupt or irreversible change increase with additional warming. It assesses that near-complete, irreversible loss of the Greenland and West Antarctic ice sheets could occur at sustained warming of about 2–3°C over multiple millennia, with limited evidence. This is a commitment on a very long timescale; it is not a prediction that both ice sheets will vanish by 2100.
Coral reefs: a crossed central estimate
The 2025 Global Tipping Points update reports the worst bleaching event on record over 2023–25 and says its central estimate for the warm-water coral thermal tipping point, 1.2°C of global warming, has been crossed. “Crossed” here refers to the assessment’s estimated thermal threshold for the reef system. It does not mean every reef has entered the same state or that local management no longer matters.

Amazon rainforest: land use changes the risk
The 2025 update places the Amazon at risk below 2°C when deforestation and climate change are considered together. Global temperature alone therefore cannot describe the hazard. Forest clearing, fragmentation, fire and regional rainfall changes can push parts of the system toward a drier state.

Recent modeling supports the possibility of tipping that cannot be ruled out at current warming. The same 2025 assessment stresses that likelihood remains uncertain because observations and models are limited. No source cited here establishes an imminent or inevitable AMOC collapse, so a specific collapse year would be unsupported.
Permafrost: patchy abrupt thaw
The 2023 and 2025 assessments treat permafrost as a potential tipping system. Abrupt thaw can occur locally and release greenhouse gases, but permafrost does not have to thaw as one synchronized global block. Regional ground conditions, snow, vegetation, hydrology and fire determine where abrupt changes occur.
How to read thresholds, risks and confidence
Different reports use different definitions, models and warming baselines. A number from one system cannot be transferred to another as if all tipping points shared a common temperature. Keep the assessment and year attached to each figure: the 1.2°C coral value is a 2025 central estimate, the Amazon statement concerns combined deforestation and warming in the 2025 update, and the 2–3°C ice-sheet finding is an IPCC sustained-warming range over multiple millennia.
The most robust conclusion is directional. The IPCC states: “The likelihood and impacts of abrupt and/or irreversible changes in the climate system, including changes triggered when tipping points are reached, increase with further global warming (high confidence).” High confidence in that rising-risk direction does not provide high confidence in a date for any particular transition.

Can scientists detect an approaching tipping point?
One proposed early-warning pattern is critical slowing down. As a system nears some kinds of transition, disturbances may take longer to fade, so fluctuations become more persistent. Statisticians may look for rising variance or autocorrelation in observations.
The Global Tipping Points Report cautions that these signals are possible only for some transition types. Data can be short, noisy or spatially uneven, and a signal does not provide a guaranteed alarm or a precise countdown. Absence of a detected signal is not proof that a threshold is distant.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why timing is difficult
- Different response speeds: Coral bleaching can occur during a heatwave, whereas major ice-sheet loss can continue for millennia.
- Multiple forcings: Warming may combine with freshwater input, drought, fire, pollution or deforestation.
- Regional variation: A global mean temperature hides local ocean, land and atmospheric conditions.
- Model and observation limits: Rare transitions provide little direct observational evidence, while models must represent coupled ice, ocean, atmosphere and ecosystem processes.
- Path dependence: The state reached after a disturbance can depend on the route taken, not just the final temperature.
What a cascade means for climate decisions
Uncertainty is not evidence that risks are negligible. It means decisions should account for a range of outcomes, including low-probability changes with very large and persistent consequences. Reducing warming lowers the chance of crossing thresholds, while protecting forests, reducing local reef stress and monitoring ocean and ice conditions can limit additional pressures on vulnerable systems.
For analysts and policymakers, a useful checklist is:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Name the tipping element and the proposed threshold, rather than referring to a single planetary tipping point.
- State the forcing and the feedback that could sustain the transition.
- Identify the assessment, year, geographic scope and timescale behind any number.
- Separate evidence that a threshold estimate has been crossed from evidence that the system has fully shifted.
- Map both destabilizing and stabilizing interactions, including unresolved pathways.
- Report confidence and uncertainty instead of supplying an unsupported date.
Common misconceptions
“There is one climate tipping point.”
There are multiple tipping elements, each with its own threshold, feedbacks and response time. Their interactions can create cascades, but they do not form one global switch.

“Crossing a threshold means instant collapse.”
Some transitions can be rapid in part of a system, while others unfold over centuries or millennia. A threshold can commit a system to long-term change without producing an immediate visible endpoint.
“Every feedback is positive.”
Amplifying loops are central to tipping behavior, but negative or stabilizing feedbacks also operate. The direction of a cross-system interaction must be assessed rather than assumed.
“An uncertain date means no risk.”
For AMOC, the current evidence says tipping cannot be ruled out at present warming, while its likelihood is uncertain. That is a risk statement, not a timetable.

The practical takeaway
Climate tipping points are thresholds where feedbacks can sustain a qualitative shift in a particular Earth system. Cascading change is possible when that shift alters another system’s conditions, but the chain can include stabilizing links and unresolved steps. The evidence supports treating additional warming as increasing the risk of abrupt or irreversible changes, while keeping every threshold estimate, interaction and timescale tied to the assessment that produced it.
