Claude Artifacts are substantial, self-contained outputs that Claude places in a dedicated window beside a conversation. They can be documents, code, web pages, SVG graphics, diagrams, or interactive React components that you can inspect, revise, copy, download, version, and sometimes share as interactive experiences.
What a Claude Artifact is
An Artifact is a finished or near-finished piece of digital work presented separately from Claude’s chat transcript. Anthropic’s help documentation describes it as “substantial, standalone content” shown in a dedicated window separate from the main conversation. The separation matters: the conversation records your instructions and decisions, while the Artifact window holds the reusable result.
An Artifact may be a long-form document, a code snippet, a single-page website, an SVG image, a diagram, a flowchart, or an interactive React component. In other words, “Artifact” describes how Claude delivers and maintains an output, not one fixed file format. A project brief, a calculator, and a small visual app can all be Artifacts if Claude renders them as independent content.

How the Artifact workflow works
You create and refine an Artifact through ordinary natural-language requests. Claude generates the standalone output, places it beside the conversation, and applies later instructions to that output rather than making you start over in a new message.
- Describe the goal. Explain what you want to make, who will use it, the required content, and any constraints. Prompts such as “Can you create this for me?” or “Let’s build this now” are the kind of direct request Anthropic uses in its guidance.
- Review the dedicated window. Inspect the rendered result and, when relevant, its underlying code. You can read the content, interact with a component, copy material, or download a file.
- Request targeted changes. Ask Claude to revise a section, correct a calculation, change styling, add a control, or restructure the content. Follow-up prompts update the Artifact instead of producing unrelated alternatives in the transcript.
- Choose a version. Edits create new versions. Use the version selector to revisit an earlier state when a later change is not useful or when you need to compare iterations.
- Reuse or share the result. Copy the content, download it, continue refining it, or use the available sharing controls. Sharing behavior depends on the account type and current product settings.
The best prompt is specific about the desired outcome, but you do not need to write code to begin. Claude can generate the initial structure and then respond to plain-language feedback such as “make the headings shorter,” “add validation for empty fields,” or “turn this outline into a one-page handout.”

Documents and structured content
Reports, briefs, lesson plans, specifications, checklists, and other substantial text can be maintained as a document Artifact. This is preferable to a chat response when the content will be edited repeatedly or exported for use elsewhere. Ask for a clear structure and then make focused revision requests so changes remain traceable through versions.
Code and single-page websites
Claude can place code in an Artifact so you can inspect and copy it without hunting through a transcript. It can also assemble a single-page website, including the markup, styling, and client-side behavior needed for a self-contained demonstration. Treat generated code as a starting point: review logic, accessibility, security, and licensing requirements before deploying it.

Visuals and diagrams
SVG images, flowcharts, and diagrams can be rendered as standalone visual outputs. You can ask for a different layout, labels, colors, or hierarchy and then inspect the revised version. SVG is text-based, so copying the source can be useful when you need to edit the graphic in another tool.
Interactive React components
An Artifact can be an interactive component rather than a static answer. Examples include a form, calculator, dashboard mock-up, or educational widget. Interact with the controls in the Artifact window, report what behaves incorrectly, and ask Claude to revise the component.
Artifact versus an ordinary chat response
A normal response is optimized for reading in the conversation. An Artifact is optimized for handling an output as an object that will be revisited or used. The distinction is practical rather than cosmetic.

Use chat for a quick explanation, brainstorming, or a short transformation. Ask for an Artifact when the output has its own identity, needs iterative editing, or should be handed to someone as a usable document, visual, code sample, or prototype.
Versioning, inspection, copying, and downloads
Every meaningful revision should be treated as a separate state. Anthropic’s guidance says the interface provides a version selector and that edits create new versions you can revisit. This lets you experiment with a redesign or rewrite without permanently losing the earlier form.

- Inspect: Read the rendered result and, for code-based Artifacts, inspect the underlying source.
- Copy: Move text, code, SVG, or other available content into another application.
- Download: Save a file when the interface offers a download action; check the resulting format before using it in another program.
- Revert by selection: Return to an earlier version through the version selector rather than asking Claude to reconstruct an old state from memory.
Version history is not a substitute for source control or document backup. For work that matters, download or copy the accepted version and keep it in your normal storage and review process.
AI-powered Artifacts
Some Artifacts can include AI behavior instead of relying only on fixed code. Anthropic describes this as a limited, text-based completion capability embedded in the Artifact. To use it, enable Create AI powered artifacts in Claude’s settings, describe the behavior you want, and iterate through prompts as you would with a non-AI Artifact.
The feature has important boundaries:
- It is not unrestricted access to Anthropic’s full API.
- An AI-powered Artifact cannot make external API calls to third-party services.
- It cannot use persistent storage.
- People using the embedded AI authenticate with their own Claude account.
- Their use counts against their own account limits, not the creator’s limits.
These constraints make AI-powered Artifacts suitable for prototypes, demonstrations, and lightweight interactive experiments. They do not provide the infrastructure normally required for a production service: a durable database, secrets management, external integrations, background jobs, observability, or independent deployment. If the concept needs those capabilities, use the Artifact to validate the interaction and then implement the application in an environment designed for production.
Sharing and access rules
Sharing is separate from creating an Artifact. Current Anthropic help pages describe public discovery and publishing for Free, Pro, and Max users, plus organization-scoped internal sharing for Claude for Work. Because plan names, controls, and availability can change, check the live sharing settings on the account you are using before publishing.
Public links
A public Artifact can be viewed and interacted with by people who have its link. Advanced actions, including customizing the Artifact or using AI-powered capabilities, require a Claude account. A published link points to the specific version that was shared. Anyone who has that link can access it until you unpublish it, so distribute it only to the intended audience and verify the selected version first.

Claude for Work
Work accounts provide organization-scoped sharing rather than an unrestricted public audience. The exact visibility depends on the organization’s controls. An Artifact created from a Project also inherits a dependency on that Project: people need access to the Project as well as the Artifact when the sharing configuration requires it.
What viewers can and cannot do
Viewing and interacting with a shared output are different from editing its source or using its embedded AI. A recipient may be able to run the interface while still needing a Claude account to customize it or invoke AI-powered behavior. Confirm those requirements with recipients before treating a shared Artifact as a universally accessible application.
Artifact prototype versus production application
An Artifact is a fast way to turn an idea into something people can see and try. A production application must continue working outside the Artifact environment and satisfy operational requirements that the feature intentionally does not provide.

Do not promise that an Artifact will remember a user’s data, call a customer’s service, or operate as a standalone SaaS product. Those expectations exceed the documented boundaries.
A reliable way to create an Artifact
- State the audience and job. For example, identify whether the output is a customer-facing calculator, an internal checklist, or a demonstration for a class.
- Specify the deliverable. Name the form you want: document, single-page site, SVG, flowchart, code sample, or interactive React component.
- Define acceptance checks. List required sections, inputs, outputs, visual elements, accessibility expectations, and edge cases.
- Ask for a first complete version. A complete draft gives you something concrete to inspect and test.
- Test the result. Click controls, try empty or unexpected inputs, inspect text for omissions, and review code before copying or sharing.
- Iterate in small changes. One focused request at a time makes it easier to identify which version introduced a problem.
- Preserve the accepted version. Select the correct version, then copy or download it and record any limitations that matter to the recipient.
Common failure modes and fixes
The output is too short or fragmented
Explain that you need a substantial, self-contained deliverable and list the sections or behaviors it must contain. Ask Claude to replace the current Artifact with a complete version rather than appending disconnected notes.

A revision damaged a working feature
Use the version selector to return to the last working state. Then request the change again with a narrower instruction and a specific acceptance check.
The prototype needs data or an external service
That requirement conflicts with the documented limits for AI-powered Artifacts. Keep the Artifact as a demonstration, or move the design into an application environment with storage and API access.
A recipient cannot use the shared AI behavior
Explain that AI-powered actions require the recipient to authenticate with a Claude account and that the recipient’s own limits apply. A public link alone does not remove that requirement.
The wrong version is visible
Unpublish the link if necessary, select the intended version, and publish or share that version explicitly. A link is tied to the version that was shared.
Availability and history
Anthropic announced general availability for Artifacts on August 27, 2024, after the feature preview began in June. That announcement reported tens of millions of Artifacts created since the preview launched; it is a historical figure, not a current usage count. The launch announcement’s plan list should not be treated as a guarantee of what every account can access today. Use the current help pages and the controls shown in your account for present availability.
When Claude Artifacts are the right tool
Choose an Artifact when you need a substantial output that can be inspected, revised, versioned, exported, or shared. It is especially effective for turning a conversation into a tangible prototype: a policy document, an instructional visual, a small interactive calculator, or a front-end concept that stakeholders can try.
Stay with an ordinary chat response when the answer is short-lived and purely conversational. Move beyond an Artifact when the requirement includes persistent user data, third-party integrations, unrestricted model API access, production security controls, or independent deployment. The feature’s value is the bridge between an idea and a testable, reusable result—not a promise that every prototype is already a production system.
