3GPP AT commands are a standardized way for host equipment to control functions of cellular user equipment and access network services. The main reference is 3GPP TS 27.007, “AT command set for User Equipment (UE).” It defines a command profile—not a guarantee that every phone, modem, or firmware supports every command.
What the term means
In the standard’s model, Terminal Equipment (TE)—for example, a host computer or control application—communicates through a Terminal Adaptor (TA) to User Equipment (UE), also called Mobile Equipment (ME) in parts of the specification. The commands let the host control device functions and interact with cellular network services.
TS 27.007 covers command profiles across GSM, UMTS, LTE and 5G standards families. Its scope and individual command details are tied to a specific standards release, so the release matters when you need exact behavior.

What the standard covers
TS 27.007 defines extended AT-command syntax and command families for UE and network functions, including packet-domain commands. SMS and Cell Broadcast Service (CBS) AT commands are addressed separately in 3GPP TS 27.005. The standards describe recommended command profiles; device implementations determine what is actually available.

How AT-command forms work
Extended commands commonly use four forms. These patterns illustrate the syntax; a command may support only some forms, and an action command does not have a read form.

General responses such as OK and ERROR belong to the surrounding AT interface conventions. A response or command form should not be assumed to exist simply because it appears in the standard’s general syntax.

Why support differs between devices
TS 27.007 is a profile, not a universal feature checklist. Support and behavior depend on the UE, modem firmware, interface exposed to the host, and applicable standards release. Before relying on a command, check the device or modem documentation and the relevant TS 27.007 edition.

The specification anticipates such additions; software should parse responses robustly and tolerate parameters beyond those it currently expects, rather than treating every extra field as malformed.

Which edition to consult
ETSI’s work-programme listing includes TS 27.007 Release 19 version 19.6.0 as published. The detailed syntax and security discussion summarized here is grounded in ETSI TS 127 007 V17.6.0 (2022-08), corresponding to 3GPP Release 17. The Release 17 PDF should not be treated as a line-by-line account of Release 19. For exact parameters or operational behavior, identify the applicable release and consult the modem vendor’s documentation.

Some AT commands expose or affect sensitive information and functions. TS 27.007 notes that commands can transfer information in clear text, including passwords, identities such as IMSI, call details, current location, IMEI, and security parameters or keys exchanged with the UICC. Other examples touch SIM or mobile-termination control and protected-command access; the examples are not exhaustive.

- Restrict access to command interfaces, especially where they are reachable by applications or other users.
- Handle command output and diagnostic logs as potentially sensitive; avoid exposing live identifiers, credentials, location details, or keys.
- Review what a command reads or changes before enabling it in software or operational workflows.
