Do not connect a space heater or another high-load appliance to a smart plug unless the appliance and smart-plug manufacturers both explicitly approve that exact setup. Keep major appliances plugged directly into a suitable wall socket when their instructions require it. There is no universal list that makes every appliance of a particular type incompatible with every smart plug: the model-specific ratings, instructions and operating conditions matter.

A smart plug adds remote or scheduled switching, so its marked load rating alone does not establish that it is safe for a particular appliance. Check both manufacturers’ instructions, and if they are unclear, use the appliance’s specified direct wall connection and ask the manufacturer or a qualified electrician.

Which appliances call for the strongest caution?

Space heaters

Treat portable space heaters as a strong caution category. The U.S.-based Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) advises plugging space heaters directly into a wall outlet, not an extension cord or power strip, and not leaving them unattended. That advice does not specifically name smart plugs. Applying it to a smart plug is therefore a precaution: do not use one for a heater unless both the heater maker and smart-plug maker explicitly approve that combination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remote switching does not remove the heater’s heat or electrical load. It can also make it easier to turn a heater on when nobody is there to supervise it. Do not use remote or scheduled operation if the heater’s instructions or safe operation depend on local supervision. A timer or app is not a substitute for following the heater’s own operating and safety instructions.

ESFI’s guidance is specifically about avoiding extension cords and power strips; it is not a product-by-product smart-plug compatibility ruling. That distinction matters: the safe conclusion is a strong caution and a requirement to check both makers’ instructions, not a claim that every heater and every smart plug are categorically incompatible. If either manufacturer does not clearly approve the exact pairing, use the heater’s specified direct wall connection.

Other high-load appliances

Electrical Safety First warns that connecting too many appliances to a socket outlet or extension lead can be dangerous, especially high-powered appliances such as kettles, irons and heaters. Its household guidance gives examples of appliance ratings: radiator or fan heaters up to 3000 W, kettles up to 3000 W, portable air conditioners up to 2000 W, and air fryers up to 2600 W. These are examples from its UK-oriented guidance, accessed in 2026; they are not universal ratings for every model and are not smart-plug safety thresholds.

The examples illustrate why it is worth checking the label and manual for the exact appliance rather than assuming a common appliance has a predictable load. A kettle, air fryer or portable air conditioner may be high-powered, but the figures above do not tell you whether a particular smart plug can safely control one. Electrical Safety First’s warning about high-powered devices concerns socket outlets and extension leads; do not translate it into a universal list of smart-plug bans.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use those examples as a reason to check the exact appliance and smart plug, not as a standalone yes-or-no test. A wattage figure does not, by itself, establish compatibility. Follow the smart plug’s marked load limit and the appliance’s instructions, including any restrictions on switching or connection type. Do not assume a smart plug with a higher stated rating is suitable just because the appliance’s stated wattage appears lower. A rating alone does not settle questions such as the appliance’s operating conditions, possible startup loads or whether remote switching is allowed.

What about refrigerators, freezers and washing machines?

Refrigerators and freezers

Electrical Safety First notes that refrigerators and freezers run 24 hours a day and recommends installing them close to a wall socket rather than using an extension lead. That is a reason to provide a dependable, properly located supply. The guidance does not explicitly prohibit smart plugs, so it would be too broad to claim that every refrigerator or freezer must never be connected to one.

Check the appliance manual and the smart plug’s instructions before considering a smart plug. In particular, consider whether interrupting power or remotely restoring it could interfere with the way the appliance is meant to operate. Because these appliances run continuously, think about whether the arrangement could interrupt that supply and whether remote or scheduled switching serves a safe purpose. If the manufacturers do not clearly approve the arrangement, connect the appliance directly as its instructions specify rather than relying on a smart plug.

The practical distinction is between a manufacturer-backed setup and an assumption based on the plug’s rating. Electrical Safety First’s recommendation to place a fridge or freezer near a wall socket supports using a suitable, conveniently located connection; it does not by itself prove that all smart plugs are forbidden. When in doubt, ask the appliance maker or a qualified electrician instead of treating the absence of an explicit ban as approval.

Washing machines

Electrical Safety First says washing machines use a lot of power, warns against using extension leads, recommends following the machine manufacturer’s instructions and advises against leaving a washing machine unattended while it is running. The extension-lead warning does not, on its own, prove that every smart plug is forbidden. Still, a smart plug introduces remote switching to an appliance for which the guidance emphasizes power use, manufacturer instructions and supervision.

Do not automate a washing machine if its manual or safe operation depends on a person being present, or if either manufacturer rules out the setup. When instructions do not clearly allow a smart plug, use the specified connection and ask the manufacturer or a qualified electrician rather than treating the plug’s wattage rating as approval. In particular, do not use a smart plug’s remote on/off feature as a reason to leave a machine running unattended when the cited safety guidance advises against doing so.

How to decide whether a specific smart plug is suitable

There is no source-backed universal compatibility list for smart plugs. Make the decision for the exact appliance and plug, using both sets of instructions and the conditions in which the appliance will operate. Work through these checks before connecting or automating anything:

  1. Read the appliance manual. Look for connection requirements, restrictions on remote or scheduled switching, and any instruction to plug directly into a wall socket. Follow the appliance maker’s directions. If the manual depends on local supervision or says not to interrupt the supply, do not try to work around that with an app or schedule.
  2. Read the smart plug’s label and manual. Check its stated load limit and any appliance or use restrictions. Do not treat the maximum rating as a general approval for every appliance below that figure. A rating describes a limit, not permission to ignore the appliance maker’s connection and operating instructions.
  3. Compare the exact models. Check the appliance’s specifications against the smart plug’s stated limits. Compare the marked current or wattage with the appliance’s specifications, and check for stated restrictions from either manufacturer. If information is missing or the manufacturers’ directions conflict, do not guess; ask the appliance or plug manufacturer.
  4. Consider how the appliance operates. Ask whether it needs an uninterrupted supply, must be supervised, or could become hazardous if switched on remotely or restarted on a schedule. A continuously running refrigerator or freezer raises a different practical concern from a device used only when someone is present. Do not automate an appliance when safe operation depends on local supervision.
  5. Think through remote and scheduled switching. A smart socket may switch a non-smart appliance on or off remotely, but that does not make remote operation appropriate for every appliance. Consider what happens if it turns on when nobody is nearby, or if a scheduled action restores power unexpectedly. Do not use the feature if the manufacturer’s instructions or safe operation depend on local control.
  6. Use the connection specified by the appliance maker. If the instructions call for a direct wall connection, do not substitute a smart plug. If they are unclear, keep the appliance connected as specified and seek advice from the manufacturer or a qualified electrician. Do not infer approval from the fact that a plug fits the socket or has an apparently adequate rating.

Why a wattage rating is not enough

A smart plug’s marked load limit is one part of the check, not proof that a particular pairing is safe. The appliance’s instructions also matter, as do the way it operates and what remote switching would do. The available guidance gives examples of high appliance ratings, but it does not provide comparative smart-plug tests or a universal threshold that makes an appliance safe to control remotely.

The four examples from Electrical Safety First—radiator or fan heaters up to 3000 W, kettles up to 3000 W, portable air conditioners up to 2000 W and air fryers up to 2600 W—are not a shopping chart for smart plugs. They are examples of the sort of high-powered household appliances that call for care with sockets and extension leads. Ratings vary by model and geography, and these figures should not be applied to a specific appliance without checking that appliance’s own information.

Nor does a warning about extension leads automatically establish a rule about smart plugs. Electrical Safety First’s advice against extension leads for washing machines and its recommendation to position refrigerators and freezers near a wall socket address those connection choices; neither statement is a blanket smart-plug ban. Likewise, ESFI’s space-heater instruction names wall outlets, extension cords and power strips, not smart plugs. The sound approach is to apply each manufacturer’s actual instructions rather than turning one kind of warning into another.

What remote control changes

Electrical Safety First explains that a smart socket can let you switch a non-smart appliance on or off remotely. That convenience changes how the appliance is controlled; it does not make the appliance’s power needs or supervision requirements disappear. Connected-device use also depends on internet and Wi-Fi, so remote control is not the same as a guaranteed local safety control.

Before setting a schedule or using an app, consider the consequence of switching the appliance on or off when nobody is nearby. If the manual requires supervision, or the appliance should not restart unexpectedly, leave it out of smart-plug automation. Use remote switching only where both manufacturers permit it and the appliance can operate safely under that control. A smart plug’s ability to turn something on is not evidence that it is safe to do so.

How to read the safety guidance without overgeneralizing it

The cited guidance comes from two organizations in different countries. Electrical Safety First provides UK-oriented household guidance and the example appliance ratings above; ESFI provides U.S. home-safety advice about space heaters. Socket types, product labels and electrical requirements differ by location, so follow the instructions and applicable requirements for your own appliance, plug and region. The examples are not a replacement for the ratings on your products.

Most importantly, distinguish a direct rule from a cautious application. ESFI’s cited heater advice names wall outlets, extension cords and power strips, not smart plugs. Electrical Safety First’s cited warnings address high-power connections, extension leads, manufacturer instructions and continuous operation; they do not publish a universal list of appliances that can never use a smart plug. Where the manufacturers do not establish that an exact setup is acceptable, the safer practical choice is not to use the smart plug.

Frequently asked questions
