Anthropic’s infrastructure sprint secures access to large amounts of future computing capacity across AWS, Google TPUs and other arrangements. Its public announcements show the scale and shape of that capacity bet, but they do not show that the capacity is already delivered or that it has produced attractive returns. The company’s reported revenue growth helps explain why it is moving quickly; it does not, by itself, establish the cost or profitability of the buildout.

Why Anthropic is committing to more compute

Training and serving advanced AI models require substantial computing capacity. Anthropic says it is expanding infrastructure to meet growth in its customer base and to support future model development. Its approach is not to rely on one chip platform: the company says it spreads workloads across Google TPUs, Amazon Trainium and NVIDIA GPUs, and has described Amazon as its primary cloud and training partner.

That mix is a capacity-procurement strategy. Different hardware may suit different workloads, and having several platforms can give Anthropic more options as demand and technical requirements change. Anthropic presents this diversification as a way to match workloads to hardware and improve resilience. It also creates a complex set of commercial relationships rather than one simple, owned data-center estate.

The demand backdrop is substantial in Anthropic’s own figures. In 2025, the company said it had more than 300,000 business customers and that large accounts with over $100,000 in run-rate revenue had grown nearly sevenfold year over year. In April 2026, it reported run-rate revenue above $30 billion, compared with approximately $9 billion at the end of 2025. It also said more than 1,000 customers were spending over $1 million annualized, more than twice the count it had stated in February 2026.

These are company-reported figures. Run-rate revenue is an annualized measure based on a point in time; it is not the same as audited revenue for a completed year, and it says nothing by itself about profit.

What the announced commitments cover

The announcements describe different kinds of commitments, capacity and expected timing. They should not be added together as if they were the same measure: AWS spending is not a capacity valuation, Amazon’s investment is not Anthropic revenue, and TeraWulf’s forecast lease revenue is not Anthropic’s spending figure.

Arrangement What was announced Timing and qualification What the figure measures
Google TPUs Anthropic said in 2025 that it would access up to one million Google TPUs in an expansion worth tens of billions of dollars. Anthropic expected well over one gigawatt to come online in 2026. In April 2026, it announced a further Google-Broadcom agreement for multiple gigawatts of next-generation TPU capacity expected from 2027; it said most of that capacity would be in the United States. The 2025 announcement described an expansion’s value and planned capacity; the 2026 announcement describes future capacity, not a disclosed spend total.
AWS and Amazon Anthropic committed to spend more than $100 billion over ten years on AWS technologies for up to five gigawatts of capacity. Amazon separately announced a $5 billion investment, with up to $20 billion more tied to commercial milestones. Announced in April 2026. “Up to” five gigawatts is a capacity ceiling in the announcement, not proof that all of it is online. The $100 billion-plus figure is Anthropic’s spending commitment. The investment figures describe Amazon’s separate investment in Anthropic, with additional amounts conditional on milestones.
TeraWulf Kentucky campus TeraWulf described a 20-year lease for approximately 401 megawatts of critical IT load and forecast about $19 billion in contracted lease revenue over the initial term. The company expected phased service to begin in the second half of 2027 and full capacity by early 2028. The $19 billion is TeraWulf’s forecast, not realized revenue. The 401 MW figure refers specifically to critical IT load. The revenue figure is the landlord’s expectation over the lease term, not a disclosed Anthropic cost or return.

The TeraWulf announcement is useful context for the scale and duration of data-center infrastructure commitments, but its lease forecast should not be treated as a direct measure of Anthropic’s spending or economics. A landlord’s expected contracted revenue and a customer’s technology-spending commitment answer different questions.

Where the economics could come from

Securing capacity ahead of demand

Long lead times for power, facilities and advanced chips make advance procurement valuable if demand materializes. A large commitment can reserve future capacity that might otherwise be difficult to obtain when model usage or training needs rise. Anthropic’s reported increase in run-rate revenue offers a business rationale for moving early, but it does not establish how much of that revenue will require the newly announced capacity.

Matching workloads to hardware

Using more than one accelerator platform may let Anthropic choose hardware that best fits a particular training or inference workload. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy characterized Trainium as offering “high performance at significantly lower cost for customers.” That is Amazon’s claim, not an independent comparative benchmark, and the public announcements do not quantify Anthropic’s realized savings from using Trainium, TPUs or GPUs.

Making large commitments work commercially

Multi-year commitments can make capacity planning more predictable, while supplier investments and commercial milestones can connect the cloud relationship to Anthropic’s growth. But those features do not make the arrangement automatically favorable: their value depends on the actual contract terms, delivered capacity, prices, usage and ability to adapt as technology changes. The public headline figures do not provide enough detail to calculate those effects.

What the public numbers cannot establish

Capacity announcements describe potential or planned infrastructure, not necessarily commissioned compute available for Anthropic to use. Nor do gigawatts or megawatts translate directly into a comparable amount of useful model work: the measures refer to power or, in TeraWulf’s case, critical IT load, and the announcements do not provide a common utilization or performance basis.

The public disclosures do not establish Anthropic’s realized cost per unit of compute, utilization rates, power costs, equipment depreciation, financing costs, operating expenses, margins or return on invested capital for these commitments. Without those inputs, the economics cannot be judged as attractive on a measured financial basis. The same capacity could produce very different returns depending on how quickly it is delivered, how intensively it is used, what it costs to operate and how much revenue it supports.

Supplier dependence and competition risks

Diversification can create options, but large long-term cloud and chip relationships can also deepen dependence on providers. In a January 2025 report, the Federal Trade Commission identified issues to watch in cloud and AI partnerships, including access to compute and engineering talent, switching costs, and partners’ access to sensitive technical and business information. The report’s evidence reflected information available to FTC staff through September 2024 and public information through January 2025; it predates the 2026 agreements discussed here and is a framework for considering risks, not an assessment of those specific contract terms.

The practical trade-off is between securing scarce capacity and retaining flexibility. The public announcements establish neither the ease of switching suppliers nor the specific protections, pricing mechanisms or exit terms in Anthropic’s contracts.

How to read the “attractive economics” claim

The strongest evidence for the sprint’s rationale is the combination of reported customer and revenue growth with substantial planned capacity from multiple providers. That makes the buildout understandable as a bet that demand for Claude and future models will continue to grow, and that access to compute will be valuable enough to justify commitments made in advance.

But the announcements establish a procurement strategy, not its realized payoff. The AWS spending commitment, Amazon’s investment, Google-Broadcom capacity plans and TeraWulf’s lease forecast are distinct measures with different counterparties, timing and risk. Until Anthropic discloses operating and financial results tied to the capacity—especially utilization, costs and margins—“attractive economics” remains a thesis rather than a demonstrated outcome.
