Turning off Android’s AI features does not turn off Android. Your apps, calls, messages, mobile data, Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, settings, updates and ordinary non-AI features should continue to work. What disappears is limited to the component you disabled—for example, Gemini assistance, Circle to Search, a native AI app, a web AI experience or the AICore service. Android has no single switch that disables every AI-related function, so the result depends on which controls you change, your phone maker and software version, and whether the device is managed by an employer or school.
There is no universal “turn off all AI” switch
Android’s AI functions are split across operating-system components, Google apps, manufacturer features, individual app permissions and, on managed phones, administrator policy. Disabling one control changes only the service covered by that control. Turning off Gemini, for example, does not automatically disable Circle to Search, remove every native AI app, block AI websites, or stop other Google services from recording activity.
This separation is deliberate. Google describes granular controls that let people opt out of complete features or disable specific components. Gemini can work only in the apps and contexts you permit; it is not a blanket license to inspect the rest of the device. Samsung likewise exposes Circle to Search as its own feature switch. The practical consequence is that you can remove an unwanted AI function while keeping the rest of the phone usable.

Because Android has many versions and manufacturers, no official document provides an exhaustive inventory of every function that survives every possible AI change. The safest broad statement is an inference from the documented scope: disabling a feature-specific control leaves basic phone operation and functions outside that feature available.

What still works on a personal Android phone
After you disable a Gemini feature, Circle to Search or another AI component, the expected surviving functions include:
- Making and receiving cellular calls, emergency calls and video calls through apps that do not depend on the disabled component.
- Sending and receiving SMS, RCS or messaging-app conversations.
- Installing and running ordinary apps, subject to each app’s own requirements and permissions.
- Wi‑Fi, mobile data, Bluetooth, NFC, hotspot and other connectivity controls.
- Camera capture, photo and video playback, alarms, calendar entries, file access and notifications.
- Changing system settings, locking and unlocking the phone, applying security updates and restarting the device.
- Non-AI accessibility, security, location and battery controls that are not tied to the component you disabled.
Some individual apps may lose an AI-powered button or return less automated results. That is an app-level change, not evidence that Android itself has stopped working. If a function vanishes, identify which component supplied it before re-enabling every AI setting.
How to turn off Gemini without disabling Android
Labels differ between Android releases, phone makers, account types and countries. Use the Gemini app or the Google app’s profile menu and look for Gemini settings, connected apps, permissions and activity controls. On some phones the assistant choice is under the default digital assistant setting; on others it is inside the Gemini app. Change only the item you intend to change, then test the feature that prompted you to opt out.
- Open the Gemini app, or open the Google app and select your account profile.
- Open Settings or Gemini settings. Review connected apps and permissions before removing access.
- Turn off the specific Gemini capability you do not want, or switch the device’s assistant back to the non-Gemini assistant when that option is offered.
- Close and reopen the affected app, then test calls, messages, search and any automation you rely on.
- If a work or school account controls the phone, check for an administrator notice; a policy may prevent you from changing the setting.
Disabling Gemini does not erase your other Google histories. Web & App Activity, Search Services History and Timeline are separate controls. You must manage each one independently if your goal is to reduce broader account collection.

Keep Activity off: what happens to chats and data
Keep Activity controls whether future Gemini chats are retained in Gemini Apps Activity for activity, review and improvement workflows. It is a privacy reduction, not an instant deletion command.
What Google still does when Keep Activity is off
Google states that chats can still be used to respond to you and to help protect Google, its users and the public, including with assistance from human reviewers. The service also keeps temporary chats and chats made while Keep Activity is off with the account for up to 72 hours. Google describes that short retention as necessary to provide responses, use the last 24 hours of chat as context and support protection against system failures.
What the setting does not change
Turning off Keep Activity does not switch off Web & App Activity, Search Services History or Timeline. Those settings can continue to save information when you use the corresponding Google services. Review and delete each history from its own activity controls, and check auto-delete periods rather than assuming one Gemini setting governs the account.

Circle to Search is built into compatible Android devices and does not require a separate download. It can search objects or text that appear on screen, translate text, provide informative summaries, identify likely scam messages and recognize songs. Turning it off removes those screen-driven actions but does not disable the rest of Android.

Samsung phones and tablets
On a compatible Galaxy phone or tablet, open Settings > Display > Navigation bar > Circle to Search, then turn off the switch. Samsung says the feature is available on select devices running Android 14 with One UI 6.1 or higher. It requires an internet connection and may be unavailable in apps that prohibit screen capture.
Other compatible devices
The exact location varies by manufacturer and launcher. Search Settings for “Circle to Search,” check navigation or gesture settings, or open the device’s assistant and screen-search preferences. If no switch appears, the phone may not support the feature, the account or language may not qualify, an administrator may control it, or a software update may have moved the setting.
What happens to native AI apps, web AI and AICore
Turning off Gemini does not necessarily remove a manufacturer’s native AI applications or prevent access to AI websites. Those are separate layers. A phone can have Gemini disabled while a built-in editor, recorder or gallery app still exposes its own AI controls. Remove or disable such an app only if its own settings and your device policy allow it; uninstalling a system app can remove dependent functions.

AICore is a system service used by some on-device AI features. Disabling it can affect every feature that depends on that service, not merely one visible app. Do not disable a system service casually on a personal phone: record the original state, confirm which feature depends on it and be prepared to re-enable it if another app misbehaves.

What an employer or school can block
Android Enterprise gives administrators controls that are separate from a user’s personal Gemini settings. Depending on the management configuration, an administrator can:
- Turn Circle to Search on or off.
- Block or uninstall native AI applications.
- Turn off Gemini web experiences and block related URLs in Chrome.
- Restrict screen access through the
ASSIST_CONTENT_ALLOWEDpolicy. - Disable the
com.google.android.aicoresystem service.
These policies can make a setting disappear, appear locked or return after a reset. A managed device may therefore behave differently from an identical personal phone on the same Android version. Only the administrator can change a policy-enforced restriction; repeatedly resetting the phone will not override it.
Why an AI toggle disappeared after an update
Menu paths and availability can change after an Android or One UI update. Feature eligibility also depends on phone model, Android and One UI version, country, language, account type, internet access and whether the current app allows screen capture. A toggle can disappear because the feature is unsupported on that build, has moved to a different settings page, is controlled by a work profile or has been replaced by a newer component.

- Search the Settings app for the feature name rather than following an old menu path.
- Check the Android, One UI and relevant app versions under Settings > About phone and the app’s information page.
- Confirm that the device is online and that the selected language and account are eligible.
- Look for a work-profile or administrator message in Settings.
- Restart the phone after changing the control, then test the affected function.
- If the feature is still absent, consult the current support page for your exact model; do not assume instructions for another manufacturer apply.
Choosing the least disruptive privacy setting

Start with the narrowest switch that meets your objective. A feature toggle is reversible and easier to troubleshoot than disabling a system service or removing a built-in app.

Common failure modes and recovery
A feature still appears after you turned it off
You may have disabled Gemini activity rather than Gemini assistance, or changed one Google account while another account is active. Reopen the exact feature settings, verify the signed-in account and check the app’s own settings.
An app lost a button you still need
Identify whether the button belonged to Gemini, Circle to Search, a native AI app or AICore. Re-enable only that component, then grant the minimum permission required. If the phone is managed, ask the administrator whether the policy can be adjusted.
Search or translation stopped working
Circle to Search requires a compatible device and internet connection, and screen-capture restrictions can prevent it inside particular apps. Use the app’s ordinary search or translation tools when the screen feature is unavailable.

Keep Activity controls future retention; it is not an instant purge. Use Gemini Apps Activity’s review and delete controls, then separately review Web & App Activity, Search Services History and Timeline.
What is not established
There is no reliable published figure for how many Android users disable AI, and no controlled cross-device evidence establishing a universal battery-life, speed or storage improvement from doing so. Any benefit depends on which component is disabled and how often it was used. Treat claims of a guaranteed performance gain as unverified unless they specify the device, software version, workload and test conditions.
Bottom line
Turning off Android AI is a set of targeted choices, not a single off switch. Calls, messaging, connectivity, ordinary apps, settings and updates should remain available because they sit outside the disabled feature’s scope. For the smallest change, disable Circle to Search or remove Gemini permissions; for chat-retention changes, use Keep Activity and manage other histories separately; on work or school phones, expect administrator policies to control native apps, web AI, screen access and AICore.
