Android keyboard shortcuts can run commands inside apps, move around the operating system, and operate accessibility features when a physical keyboard is connected. On supported tablets, the main list is under Settings > System > Keyboard > Physical keyboard > Keyboard shortcuts. There is no single user-facing file or database containing every shortcut: Android system settings, individual apps, and accessibility services maintain separate shortcut definitions and preferences.

What Android keyboard shortcuts can do

A physical keyboard turns many Android devices into a command-driven workspace rather than a touch-only interface. A shortcut may edit text, open or switch app functions, navigate a browser, control a pointer, or issue an accessibility command. The command belongs to the system component, app, or service that defines it, so a key combination is not automatically universal across every device or application.

Text editing and system commands

Common editing combinations such as Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V can copy and paste selected content in apps that support the standard editing actions. Other system-level commands may move the cursor, select text, or invoke actions exposed by Android’s input framework. The exact response depends on the focused field and the app handling it.

App-specific actions

Apps can reserve their own combinations. Google’s Pixel Help examples include Chrome commands such as Ctrl+T for opening a new tab, alongside editing shortcuts and commands for productivity apps. These examples demonstrate app context, not a promise that every Android app implements the same keys. An app may ignore a combination, use a different one, or provide its own shortcut list in help or settings.

Navigation and accessibility

Shortcuts can also move focus, navigate web content, control a pointer, or trigger screen-reader commands. TalkBack has a dedicated keyboard model, while Android 16 and later add physical-keyboard accessibility options such as Bounce Keys, Mouse Keys, Slow Keys, and Sticky Keys. These features are separate from ordinary app editing shortcuts.

Where to view the general shortcut list

On the tablet configuration documented by Google, connect a physical keyboard and open:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap System.
  3. Tap Keyboard.
  4. Choose Physical keyboard.
  5. Tap Keyboard shortcuts to display the list of useful shortcuts.

Google Android Help describes this control as: “Keyboard shortcuts: Tap to display a list of useful keyboard shortcuts.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The wording and nesting can differ by device manufacturer, Android release, tablet or phone form factor, and keyboard connection method. If you do not see the menu, first connect or pair a physical keyboard; some builds show physical-keyboard options only while one is available.

Other controls in the same area

The physical-keyboard page can also expose controls that affect how shortcuts are interpreted:

  • Modifier keys: Change the behavior of Caps Lock, Ctrl, Alt, and other physical modifier keys.
  • Keyboard layout: Select the language or regional layout that matches the printed key labels.
  • Connection and pairing: Pair a compatible Bluetooth keyboard and manage its connection.
  • Touchpad or pointer options: On keyboards with a touchpad, related settings may appear alongside keyboard controls.

Changing a layout changes which characters a key produces; changing a modifier changes how combinations are interpreted. Neither setting creates a universal remapping layer for every app.

How to change shortcuts and modifier behavior

Android does not provide one global editor for every shortcut. Make the change in the layer that owns the command.

Change physical-keyboard options

  1. Connect the keyboard you intend to use.
  2. Go to Settings > System > Keyboard > Physical keyboard.
  3. Open Modifier keys to change Caps Lock, Ctrl, Alt, or another listed modifier.
  4. Return to the physical-keyboard page and open Keyboard shortcuts to review the resulting key combinations.

Settings labels can vary, so use the Settings search field for “physical keyboard,” “modifier keys,” or “keyboard shortcuts” if the hierarchy is different.

Change an app’s shortcuts

Look in the app’s help, settings, or keyboard-shortcut dialog. An app may register commands only while its window has focus. For example, a browser can reserve tab and navigation combinations while a text editor handles formatting commands. If the app offers no remapping interface, Android’s general physical-keyboard page cannot assign a new command to it.

Change TalkBack shortcuts

TalkBack manages its keymap independently from the general physical-keyboard list. In TalkBack settings, you can select a keymap, choose the modifier key, and reassign commands. The documented choices include Default and Enhanced keymaps. Enhanced emphasizes web navigation and Browse mode.

The TalkBack modifier can be Alt or Action, depending on the selected keymap and keyboard. On keyboards modeled after Windows or Command-key layouts, the guide describes mappings for using the Windows key or Command key as Action. Because these assignments are service preferences, changing a system modifier or app shortcut does not necessarily change TalkBack commands.

Physical-keyboard accessibility in Android 16 and later

Google documents four physical-keyboard accessibility features for Android 16.0 and later. Availability still depends on the device build and the keyboard being recognized as a physical input device.

Feature What it does Useful when
Bounce Keys Ignores rapid repeated presses. Unintended double presses are a problem.
Mouse Keys Uses keyboard input to control the pointer. You need pointer control without a mouse or touchpad.
Slow Keys Requires a key to be held for a specified interval before accepting it. Brief accidental touches should not register.
Sticky Keys Lets modifier keys activate one at a time instead of being held simultaneously. Holding Ctrl, Alt, or another modifier is difficult.

The accessibility page also documents Action+Alt combinations for enabling some features. Treat those combinations as feature-specific commands, not as a replacement for the general shortcut list. If a combination does nothing, verify that Android 16 or newer is installed, the feature is available on that build, and the keyboard’s Action and Alt keys are mapped as expected.

Where Android shortcuts are stored

“Stored” can mean three different things, and each has a different answer.

If you mean “where can I view them?”

Use Settings > System > Keyboard > Physical keyboard > Keyboard shortcuts for the general physical-keyboard list. For commands that exist only in an app, use that app’s help or shortcut dialog. For screen-reader commands, open TalkBack’s shortcut and keymap settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you mean “where can I customize them?”

Physical-keyboard behavior is adjusted in Android’s physical-keyboard settings, app commands in the app that owns them, and TalkBack commands in TalkBack settings. Accessibility features such as Sticky Keys and Mouse Keys have their own Android accessibility controls. These are separate preference areas rather than tabs in one universal editor.

If you mean “what file or database contains everything?”

The available Android documentation does not identify one central, user-accessible file or database that contains all shortcuts. Android’s public APIs represent shortcut metadata, apps can register their own shortcut groups, and TalkBack maintains its own keymap preferences. The AOSP Settings configuration includes a keyboard_shortcuts_helper preference entry for the physical-keyboard settings surface, which confirms the settings entry but does not reveal a universal storage location for every command.

The keyboard is US QWERTY layout, easy to use, has hot keys, such as volume control, play and pause, previous and next etc. The front is brushed, the back is ultra-thin and smooth aluminum alloy design.

Do not assume that editing a Settings database, keyboard-layout file, or application preference will rewrite all Android shortcuts. Such changes can affect one component while leaving app and accessibility bindings untouched, and unsupported edits can break settings or be overwritten by an update.

How Android represents shortcuts for apps

For developers, the KeyboardShortcutInfo API represents a shortcut with a label, a key or base character, and a set of modifiers. The API was added in API level 24. Android’s developer guidance for Jetpack Compose also describes registering groups of keyboard shortcuts for an app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These interfaces explain why shortcut ownership is distributed: an app can expose a group of commands and labels without adding those commands to a single system-wide list. The APIs describe how shortcuts are declared and presented; they are not instructions for locating or editing a user-facing master file.

Why a shortcut is not working

Diagnose the command in the same order Android receives it: hardware, mapping, focus, then owner.

  1. Confirm the keyboard is connected. For Bluetooth models, check that the keyboard is paired, connected, and awake. For a detachable or wired model, reseat the connector or adapter.
  2. Check the selected physical keyboard. Pixel Help specifically advises verifying the selected physical keyboard in system settings. A device can show a different input device as active after pairing or reconnecting.
  3. Verify the layout and modifiers. A mismatched language layout can produce a different character, and a remapped Ctrl, Alt, Caps Lock, or Action key changes the combination Android receives.
  4. Test in a simple text field. If Ctrl+C or Ctrl+V works in one editor but not another, the receiving app is the likely owner of the difference.
  5. Check app focus. Browser shortcuts require the browser window or tab to have focus; editing shortcuts require a selectable or editable field.
  6. Check TalkBack state and keymap. TalkBack may consume a combination for navigation. Review its selected keymap, modifier, and command assignment before testing again.
  7. Check Android version and feature availability. Physical-keyboard accessibility features documented for Android 16 require Android 16.0 or later and may still vary by device build.
  8. Reconnect and restart only after checking settings. Re-pairing can clear a stale connection, but it will not add a shortcut that the app or service does not implement.

If the command remains unavailable after these checks, consult the owning app’s documentation or support channel. Android cannot execute a shortcut that the focused component has not registered.

Choosing a physical keyboard for Android shortcuts

A keyboard’s usefulness depends more on compatibility and layout than on a promise of universal shortcut remapping. Confirm the following before buying or pairing one:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Device compatibility: Verify that the keyboard supports your Android tablet or phone and its connection method.
  • Connection type: Bluetooth is a common option; other supported connections may require a compatible port or adapter.
  • Physical layout and language: Match the printed layout to the Android layout you plan to select.
  • Modifier behavior: Check whether Ctrl, Alt, Caps Lock, Windows, or Command-style keys are present and can be mapped as your workflow requires.
  • Pointer needs: Decide whether you need an integrated touchpad or will use a separate mouse. Mouse Keys can provide pointer control on Android 16 and later, but that is an accessibility feature rather than a hardware replacement for every touchpad gesture.

Do not infer that a keyboard includes Android-wide shortcut remapping merely because it has extra keys. Only the model’s documentation can establish hardware-level remapping, and Android apps may still interpret the resulting keys differently.

A practical way to map your own shortcuts

For a reliable setup, create a small inventory instead of memorizing every command:

  1. Write down the tasks you perform most: text editing, browser tabs, navigation, pointer control, or screen-reader operation.
  2. Open the general physical-keyboard shortcut list and record the system combinations you use.
  3. Open each frequently used app and note its app-specific commands separately.
  4. If you use TalkBack, select the intended keymap and modifier, then record any reassigned commands.
  5. Test each combination with the correct app or field focused and note conflicts.
  6. Keep the system, app, and TalkBack lists separate so a later layout or modifier change does not make the inventory misleading.

This approach reflects how Android actually organizes shortcuts: several cooperating owners rather than one master table.

Bottom line on Android shortcut storage

Start with the physical-keyboard shortcut screen for commands Android exposes, then check the focused app or TalkBack for commands they own. Android’s public APIs and settings implementation support multiple shortcut providers, not one universal storage file. Menu names and defaults can change across manufacturers, Android releases, form factors, and TalkBack versions, so use the labels on your device when they differ from the documented tablet path.
