Your Android phone’s camera can do more than take pictures: with Google Drive, Lens, Translate, and—in supported cases—the Camera app, it can scan paperwork, build PDFs, copy text, translate signs, read QR codes, and capture details for contacts or calendar events. These are separate workflows across Google apps, not seven tools found in every Android camera app; availability depends on the app and device.
Scan paper into a file with Google Drive
Google Drive’s Android scanning workflow is useful for receipts, letters, and billing statements. Open the Drive app, tap its camera option, point the camera at the page, and capture it. Drive outlines the page and can capture automatically or let you take the picture manually.
After capture, adjust the crop and rotation, apply a filter or grayscale, and clean up marks such as stains or fingers. You can add pages, retake a page, or delete one before saving. Use Pixel Camera’s document scan prompt
On Pixel phones with the documented feature, open Google Camera and point it at a document. When the “Scan document” prompt appears, tap it and follow the on-screen steps. Before saving, downloading, or sharing, you can use Clean Image to improve the document’s appearance. This is Pixel Camera guidance, not a universal Android camera feature. Make a multi-page scan instead of a single photo
A normal camera photo captures one frame; a document scan is a workflow for collecting pages into one finished file. In Drive’s scan flow, add another page after the first capture, then review the pages together. Retake or delete individual pages as needed and save the completed scan. Copy text out of a picture with Google Lens
Open Google Lens on Android and select text in the image. Depending on the selection and the interface presented, Lens can offer actions such as copying, listening, translating, or searching. Recognized phone numbers, email addresses, and links may also offer relevant actions, such as opening a website. Translate signs or photographed text
Google Translate can translate text from an image, including camera-captured text on some devices. Choose or detect the source language, select the language you want, and use the camera or image option available in the app. You can copy translated text from the result.
For camera translation offline, download the language data you need in advance. Google notes that small, unclear, or stylized text may not translate accurately, so frame the writing clearly and verify the language pair and result when accuracy matters. Google Translate Help: Translate images
Scan QR codes on supported phones
Camera from Google can scan QR codes in QR mode or from the default photo mode, but Google says QR scanning is available only on selected devices. A scanned code may open a browser, display text, or launch an app. On Pixel, camera scan suggestions and a Quick Settings scanner are also documented; the exact entry point varies by device and setup. If you do not see a QR option in your camera, look for the scanner in Quick Settings or use a supported Google app path rather than assuming every Android camera includes the same control.
Save contact or event details from a photo
Lens can turn some photographed information into a next action. For example, it can offer to save contact details from a business card to Contacts, or add an event from a flyer or billboard to Calendar.
