Android Auto can send, receive, read aloud, and reply to messages sent through SMS or a messaging app that is compatible with Android Auto. You can use voice input, the car’s microphone or steering-wheel button, and supported controls on the car display. The important qualification is compatibility: an app installed on your phone is not automatically available in Android Auto, and compatible apps may expose different features.
Google’s documented examples include WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. They illustrate supported voice-command patterns, not a complete list or a promise that every app offers identical composing, notification, reading, or reply functions.
What Android Auto messaging supports
Google describes Android Auto messaging as a set of driver-facing actions rather than a full duplicate of a phone app. Depending on the messaging app and your setup, you can perform the following tasks:

How to send or reply by voice
Voice interaction is the most direct way to compose a message without typing on the car display. Google documents three ways to begin: say “Hey Google,” select the microphone control, or press the voice-command button on the steering wheel. The exact assistant you see may be Gemini or Google Assistant; availability can vary with rollout, device, language, and territory. Google’s voice-interaction guidance says Gemini is designed to handle natural speech rather than requiring traditional command formulas.
Start a new conversation
- Say “Hey Google,” tap the microphone on the Android Auto interface, or press the steering-wheel voice button.
- Name the recipient and the service if needed. Google’s examples include “Send a text to [phone number],” “Message [contact name] with Facebook Messenger,” and “Message [contact name] on Whatsapp.”
- Speak the message when prompted.
- Listen to the assistant repeat the composed message. It asks whether you want to send it.
- Say or select the option to send, cancel, or refine the wording.
The confirmation step matters: the assistant does not simply transmit every dictated sentence without giving you a chance to correct it. If the transcription is wrong, refine the message before confirming rather than assuming the app will fix it later.
Reply to an existing message
- Start voice interaction with “Hey Google,” the microphone, or the steering-wheel button.
- Use a request such as “Reply to [contact name].”
- Dictate your response.
- Review the assistant’s read-back and choose send, cancel, or refine.
Natural-language requests can be useful with Gemini, but Google does not state that every language or region receives the same Gemini behavior. If your system responds through Google Assistant instead, use the conventional wording shown in the Android Auto help examples.

Android Auto also documents a display-based route for a new message. This is not a general-purpose phone interface: you use the messaging controls that Android Auto presents for the selected app.

- Open the Messages app on the car display.
- Choose a contact.
- Speak the message when Android Auto prompts you.
- Confirm the assistant’s read-back before sending.
For a different compatible messaging service, open the Android Auto app launcher and select that app. The labels and available actions come from the app’s Android Auto integration, so one service may show a notification-and-reply flow while another offers fewer controls.
How receiving, reading, and missed-message playback works
Incoming notifications
Android Auto can show a notification when a message arrives. Depending on the app and notification state, you can select the notification and have the message played aloud. You can also ask Gemini or Google Assistant to read your messages.
Dismissed or missed notifications
If you did not open a notification when it appeared, Google documents two places to look later: screen tiles and the notification center. From there, you can select a missed message and play it aloud. This lets you revisit a notification without searching through the entire phone app, although the exact tile or menu presentation can differ between Android Auto versions and car displays.
What “read” does not mean
Android Auto’s documented feature is spoken playback of messages surfaced by the compatible integration. It is not a guarantee that every message view, attachment, conversation history, reaction, group-management control, or media feature from the phone app will appear on the car screen. Google does not publish a complete app-by-app feature matrix.

Which messaging apps work?
The boundary is compatibility with Android Auto, not whether the app is installed on your phone. Google directs users to its compatible-app information and says that, to view all compatible apps in the Play Store, you must be signed in to a Google Account with personalization turned on. Check the current Android Auto app-download and compatibility guidance before treating a particular service as supported.
WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger
Google’s voice-command instructions use WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger as named examples. You may therefore see commands such as “Message [contact name] on Whatsapp” or “Message [contact name] with Facebook Messenger.” These examples show how to identify a service in a voice request; they are not an exhaustive catalog and do not establish that every release of either app, or every region, exposes exactly the same actions.
Why an installed app may be absent
- The app may not be listed as compatible with Android Auto.
- The installed version may not expose the Android Auto functions that the phone app itself provides.
- Your account, language, region, device, or software rollout may differ from the conditions described in Google’s help pages.
- The app may be compatible for notifications but not for every composing, reading, or reply action.
For a specific service, verify both Google’s current compatible-app listing and the app developer’s own Android Auto documentation. Do not infer support from another app’s behavior.

Message summaries: useful, optional, and imperfect
Google Assistant guidance describes message summaries as an optional feature that can be turned off in Android Auto or Assistant settings. Availability is limited: summaries may not be offered on your device, in your region, country, or language. Google also warns that AI-generated summaries can contain mistakes.

A summary should therefore be treated as a convenience for understanding the general thread, not as a guaranteed word-for-word account. If the precise wording matters, use the available read-aloud message function instead. The official instructions are in Google Assistant’s message-summary help page.

It cannot support every messaging app
There is no “all apps installed on my phone” mode. An app has to provide an Android Auto-compatible integration and be recognized as such. Sideloading or installing an ordinary phone-only messenger does not establish that it will appear in the car interface.
It cannot guarantee feature parity
Compatibility is not a promise of identical functionality. Google’s documentation supports the broad actions of sending, receiving, listening, and replying, but it does not enumerate a universal matrix for each app. One service may support voice composition and read-aloud notifications while another exposes only a subset.

Google’s current materials describe both Gemini and Google Assistant. Which one handles a request, and whether natural-language interaction is available, depends on rollout, device, language, and territory. Do not assume that a command shown in a Gemini example will behave identically for every Android Auto user.

It cannot guarantee accurate summaries
Summaries can be unavailable and can be mistaken even when the option appears. They are not a substitute for the original message text.
Troubleshooting when messaging does not work
The app does not appear in Android Auto
- Confirm that you are looking at the Android Auto-compatible app listing, not merely the phone’s installed-app list.
- Sign in to the Google Account used for the Play Store and ensure personalization is turned on, as Google specifies for viewing all compatible apps.
- Check the app developer’s current Android Auto instructions and whether your app version is supported.
- If the service is not listed as compatible, use another supported messaging channel rather than expecting the phone-only app to appear.
The assistant sends to the wrong service or contact
- Name the contact clearly and identify the service when more than one messaging option is available.
- Use the explicit patterns Google documents, such as “Message [contact name] on Whatsapp” or “Message [contact name] with Facebook Messenger.”
- Wait for the assistant to repeat the message and verify the recipient and wording before confirming.
You cannot find an earlier notification
Check Android Auto’s screen tiles and notification center for dismissed or missed messages, then select the message to play it aloud. If the notification never appeared, the app may not be exposing notifications through its Android Auto integration.
Summaries are missing or sound wrong
First check whether summaries are supported for your device, country, region, and language. If the option is available but the result is inaccurate, rely on the original message read aloud and disable summaries in Android Auto or Assistant settings if they are not useful.
A practical way to evaluate a messaging app
Before relying on a service in the car, evaluate the exact actions you need rather than asking only whether the app is “supported.” Use this checklist:
- Is the app listed as compatible with Android Auto?
- Can you start a voice message to a contact?
- Can you reply to an incoming notification?
- Are notifications read aloud and recoverable from tiles or the notification center?
- Does the app expose the display controls you expect?
- Are message summaries available for your device, language, and region, and are you comfortable treating them as fallible?
Google’s documentation does not provide a complete per-app answer for every item. The compatible-app listing and the developer’s instructions are the authoritative checks for a particular service.
Bottom line for Android Auto messaging
Android Auto is capable of the core messaging workflow: dictate a new SMS or compatible-app message, reply by voice, receive notifications, and listen to messages or missed notifications. Its limits are equally important: only compatible apps appear, app integrations do not all expose the same controls, Gemini and Assistant availability varies, and AI summaries are optional, region-limited, and fallible. Confirm support for the exact app and action you need before depending on it.
