An NPU (neural processing unit) is a specialized processor for supported artificial-intelligence workloads. It works alongside the CPU and GPU rather than replacing either one. You notice a benefit only when the operating system or an application is specifically programmed to use the NPU, the required AI model is supported, and the laptop meets the feature’s hardware and software requirements.

For buyers, the practical question is not simply whether a laptop has an NPU. It is whether the applications you use run compatible AI tasks locally, and whether the complete laptop—CPU, GPU, memory, storage, battery and software support—fits your work.

What an NPU is

“NPU” stands for neural processing unit. It is a processor resource designed to accelerate the mathematical operations used by neural-network models. Microsoft Learn describes it as “a new hardware resource.” In a laptop, the NPU is part of a platform that also includes a general-purpose CPU and, on many systems, a graphics processor.

Neural-network software repeatedly performs operations such as multiplying numbers, adding results and applying model-specific functions. An NPU is built to perform supported patterns of those operations efficiently. In practical laptop features, that usually means on-device AI inference: running a trained model to interpret speech, translate language, adjust a video image or produce another result without sending every calculation to a remote service.

The NPU does not automatically accelerate every program. Software has to be written to target it, and the model or operation must be compatible with the laptop’s hardware and software stack. If those conditions are not met, the task can remain on the CPU, run on the GPU, use a cloud service or fail to offer the feature at all.

How the CPU, GPU and NPU divide work

Processor Primary role Typical strengths What it does not guarantee
CPU General-purpose computing Operating-system work, application logic, serial and mixed workloads It is not automatically the fastest or most efficient processor for neural-network operations.
GPU Graphics and highly parallel computing Rendering games and graphics; accelerating some compute and AI workloads A laptop with a powerful GPU does not necessarily expose the same software features as an NPU.
NPU Supported neural-network operations Selected on-device AI inference while other processors handle other work Its presence does not speed up unsupported applications or every AI model.

Intel describes these resources as parts of one processor platform. The operating system and applications decide which resource to use. A video-call effect might use an NPU when its software supports that path, while the same laptop uses the CPU for application logic and the GPU for drawing the call window.

What happens when an application uses the NPU

  1. The feature requests an AI operation. For example, an application may need to identify speech, translate audio or apply an image effect.
  2. The software checks available hardware. It looks for a compatible NPU, supported drivers and the required operating-system interfaces.
  3. The model is mapped to supported operations. A model must use operations the NPU can execute. A model that is not supported may be assigned to the CPU or GPU instead.
  4. Data is processed locally when the feature is designed for local inference. The NPU performs its portion of the calculation, while the CPU and GPU continue handling their own duties.
  5. The application returns a result or falls back. If the NPU path is unavailable, software may use another processor, require an online service or disable the feature. The exact behavior belongs to the application.

This division explains why an NPU can improve a supported experience without making the entire laptop feel faster. The benefit belongs to a particular operation, not to every click, browser tab or program.

When an NPU matters

On-device AI features

An NPU is most relevant when a feature explicitly supports it. Microsoft lists real-time translation, image generation, intelligent search and video-call effects such as automatic framing among examples of AI features associated with these systems. Availability depends on the specific device, software release and region; an NPU laptop does not automatically include every listed capability.

Local processing can be useful when a feature is designed to work without continuously sending the underlying audio, images or text to a remote service. Whether a feature works offline, what data it sends and how accurate it is are application-specific questions. The NPU alone does not establish any privacy, connectivity or quality guarantee.

Features that run continuously

Some AI functions operate repeatedly while you work, such as analyzing a camera stream for framing or processing audio during a call. A compatible NPU is intended to handle that class of workload efficiently while leaving the CPU and GPU available for the rest of the session. The intended efficiency advantage is a design goal, not a universal battery-life result. No single battery-life improvement applies to every laptop, model or workload.

Software ecosystems built around the platform

A laptop purchased for a defined Windows feature set may need an NPU to qualify for that platform. Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC category is the clearest current example. If your reason for buying is a feature that requires Copilot+ eligibility, the NPU can be a decisive requirement even when you would not notice it in ordinary office work.

When an NPU may make little difference

If your applications do not run local AI features or do not support NPU acceleration, the NPU may have little visible effect on day-to-day work. Web browsing, conventional office documents, many programming tasks and applications with no compatible AI path still depend primarily on the CPU, GPU, storage and memory.

An application can include an AI feature and still not use the NPU. It might rely on a cloud service, use the GPU, require a newer model, or support only selected hardware. Check the application’s documentation for explicit NPU support instead of assuming that any AI label means local NPU execution.

Likewise, a higher TOPS number does not compensate for an unsuitable CPU, insufficient RAM, weak graphics performance, limited storage or poor software support. An NPU is one resource in a complete computer, not a replacement for the parts that determine general responsiveness.

Copilot+ PC requirements and what they mean

Microsoft’s 2025 Copilot+ explainer lists these minimum requirements:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Requirement Minimum stated by Microsoft How to interpret it
NPU capability At least 40 trillion operations per second (40 TOPS) A platform-eligibility threshold, not a complete laptop-performance rating.
Memory 16 GB RAM The stated minimum for the category; applications may need more.
Storage 256 GB SSD The stated minimum capacity and storage type in the cited explainer.
Operating system Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer The required Windows release named on that page; requirements can change.

These figures describe Microsoft’s Copilot+ platform requirements as represented on that 2025 page. They are not universal requirements for every laptop NPU or every AI application. Microsoft also says feature availability can vary by device, region and over time. Confirm the current requirements for the exact laptop, Windows release and country before purchase or deployment.

Microsoft’s product catalog uses laptop families such as Surface Laptop, Acer Swift and ASUS Zenbook as examples of the category. Those examples establish that the category spans multiple manufacturers; they are not a performance ranking and do not show that every configuration in a family has identical NPU capability.

How to read a TOPS specification

TOPS means “trillions of operations per second.” It is a throughput figure for a processor’s ability to perform a stated class of operations. The 40-TOPS figure in the Copilot+ requirement is therefore a threshold for that program, not a promise that every AI task will run at 40 trillion useful operations per second.

TOPS does not by itself tell you:

  • Whether your application supports the NPU.
  • Which model operations the hardware can execute.
  • How quickly a complete feature responds from input to result.
  • How much memory the model needs or how quickly data can reach the processor.
  • Whether the CPU or GPU would be faster for a particular workload.
  • How long the laptop battery will last.

Different vendors can also describe capabilities under different technical conditions. Treat TOPS as one compatibility and capacity indicator. Compare it with documented software support and the rest of the laptop’s specifications rather than using it as a single buying score.

A practical decision process before buying

1. Name the feature you actually need

Start with the task, not the processor label. Write down the exact application and feature: for example, a particular translation mode, a camera effect or an image-generation function. “AI-ready” is too broad to establish compatibility.

2. Check whether it runs locally and uses an NPU

Look for the application’s current hardware requirements and documentation. Confirm that the feature supports local execution on an NPU, not merely that it contains an AI function. Also check whether the feature is limited by Windows edition, region, language or account status.

3. Verify the complete configuration

  • Check the CPU for the general workloads you perform.
  • Check the GPU if you edit video, render 3D scenes, play games or use GPU-accelerated applications.
  • Choose enough RAM for your applications; 16 GB is the Copilot+ minimum, not a universal ideal.
  • Check SSD capacity and the operating-system version.
  • Confirm that the exact configuration, not just the product family, includes the required NPU capability.

4. Plan for software and driver support

NPU usefulness depends on support that can change after purchase. Verify that the laptop receives the required Windows updates and drivers and that the applications you rely on continue to support its hardware. A specification that qualifies today does not guarantee that every future feature will be available.

5. Treat battery claims carefully

An NPU is intended to improve efficiency for supported workloads, but vendor battery claims are not interchangeable with independent testing. Battery life depends on the exact processor, display, battery capacity, brightness, wireless activity, applications and power settings. Compare like-for-like testing when battery life is a priority.

How the NPU affects common laptop scenarios

Scenario Likely importance of an NPU What to verify
Basic web, email and documents Usually low unless a specific local AI feature is central to your workflow. Whether the applications you use expose NPU-accelerated functions.
Video calls Potentially meaningful for supported effects such as automatic framing. App version, operating-system support, regional availability and supported camera features.
Translation or speech features Potentially meaningful when the feature is designed for local, real-time processing. Supported languages, offline behavior, device requirements and whether the feature uses the NPU.
Image-generation tools Depends entirely on the application, model and whether processing is local. Model compatibility, memory needs and whether the workload uses the NPU, GPU or cloud.
Gaming and 3D graphics Usually secondary to GPU performance unless a particular game or tool documents NPU use. GPU class, graphics memory, display resolution and the software’s own requirements.
Software development Varies by tools and models; an NPU matters only for development or testing workloads that target it. Framework support, model operators, drivers and the deployment target.

Common misconceptions

“An NPU replaces the CPU.”

No. The CPU remains the general-purpose processor. The NPU accelerates a narrower set of supported neural-network operations.

“Any AI application will use it.”

No. The application, model and hardware must line up. Unsupported software can continue using the CPU, GPU or a remote service.

“More TOPS means a faster laptop.”

No. TOPS describes one processor capability. It does not measure overall responsiveness, graphics performance, storage speed, software compatibility or battery life.

“An NPU guarantees every Copilot+ feature.”

No. Copilot+ eligibility includes other minimums, and Microsoft says feature availability varies by device, region and time.

The useful answer for a buyer

Choose an NPU deliberately when a named application or Windows feature you need explicitly supports it, especially if that feature requires Copilot+ PC eligibility or is designed for recurring on-device AI processing. If your workload has no documented NPU path, prioritize the CPU, GPU, RAM, SSD, display, battery and support policy that directly affect your work.

Before committing, verify the exact model’s NPU capability, current Windows requirements and application support. That check matters more than the presence of an NPU badge or a large TOPS number.
