An IR remote control sends commands to compatible electronics as coded pulses of infrared light. The remote emits the signal; an infrared receiver in the device detects and decodes it. Infrared is invisible to people, and the signal generally needs a clear path to the receiver.
How an infrared remote sends a command
- You press a button. The remote’s control circuit selects the command associated with that button.
- An infrared LED emits pulses. The pulses are arranged in a timed pattern that represents the command. The light is outside the range of human vision.
- The remote modulates the signal. Many consumer remotes place the pulse pattern on a carrier so the receiver can distinguish it from ambient infrared light. NXP describes 30–60 kHz as a typical range for one on-off-keying approach, and lists receiver examples at 30, 33, 36, 38, 40 and 56 kHz; these are examples, not a universal frequency. NXP’s infrared remote-control application note explains the approaches.
- The device receives and decodes it. A sensor and receiver circuitry filter or demodulate the incoming light, then the device interprets the timing pattern as a command.
Why IR remotes do not all use the same codes
The pulse timing carries the command, but the pattern is not standardized across every manufacturer and device. Protocols can encode information through pulse distance, pulse width, pulse position or Manchester encoding. A frame is built from marks and spaces, with protocols varying the duration or arrangement of those signals. Adafruit describes these patterns in its guide to infrared signals.
About 38 kHz is a commonly discussed carrier example, not a requirement for every IR remote. Adafruit notes that some protocols use frequencies from 36 kHz to 57 kHz; NXP’s application note describes other examples and approaches. The term “IR remote” identifies the transmission medium, not a shared command language.

Will a universal IR remote work with your device?
Not automatically. First check whether the device is controlled by IR, RF or Bluetooth, then verify that the replacement remote supports the device’s exact model or its command protocol. “Universal” does not mean compatible with every device or transmission method. The manufacturer’s guidance distinguishes IR remotes from RF- or Bluetooth-controlled devices, but without a specific model pair, compatibility cannot be confirmed.
A learning remote can record commands from another remote and replay them. Analog Devices describes this design in its article on a MAXQ-based learning remote. Learning commands does not establish compatibility with every protocol or device.
