An application development system is the people, tools, environments, and processes used to create, deliver, and maintain an application. It is the setup behind the software—not the application itself—and there is no single standard architecture or toolset that every project must use.

What does “application development system” mean?

The phrase is best understood as an explanatory description, not a universally standardized technical term. It means the arrangement that enables application work: the people involved, their development environment and tools, the lifecycle process they follow, and the practices used to release and maintain the result. AWS similarly describes the development experience in terms of the environment, tools, and processes used across the software development life cycle (SDLC). AWS Prescriptive Guidance

NIST defines the SDLC as “A formal or informal methodology for designing, creating, and maintaining software (including code built into hardware).” That lifecycle is one part of the broader development system. NIST CSRC glossary

How is the development system different from the application?

An application is the software that provides a service or solves a user problem. The development system is what a team uses to build and support it. The U.S. Department of Justice defines an application as “A system providing a set of services to solve some specific user problem.” U.S. Department of Justice SDLC glossary

  • Application: the finished software and its user-facing capabilities.
  • Application development system: the people, tools, environments, workflows, and maintenance practices involved in producing and operating that software.

An integrated development environment (IDE) can be a central tool, but it is not the whole system. Apple describes Xcode as a suite for managing Apple-app work from creation through testing, optimization, and submission; it includes tools such as an editor, source control, debugger, simulator, and profiling features. Its scope is Apple platform development, not application development in general. Apple Developer: Xcode

What are the main parts of an application development system?

People and responsibilities

Application work is cross-disciplinary. For example, CMS describes business analysts as eliciting and documenting stakeholder requirements, developers as contributing to design, coding, tests, builds, and releases, and maintainers as supporting existing software with patches, defect tracking, and fixes. Roles and team boundaries vary by organization. CMS: Application Development Introduction and Principles

Development tools and environments

A team may use an IDE, source control, collaboration tools, testing frameworks, knowledge-management resources, and deployment tooling. Integrating these tools can reduce manual handoffs and context switching, according to AWS. The appropriate combination depends on the project and platform. AWS Prescriptive Guidance

Lifecycle process

The process organizes work from understanding needs through ongoing support. Teams may use sequential stages, iterative cycles, or a tailored approach; the lifecycle is not necessarily a one-way series of handoffs.

Delivery and maintenance practices

Build, release, deployment, operations, defect correction, and response to incidents connect development to the application’s use after coding. A development system therefore extends beyond the workstation and the act of writing code.

How does application development work?

A practical overview is to move through the activities below. They provide a useful mental model, not a mandatory linear method: iterative teams may revisit or perform activities in parallel.

  1. Plan and understand needs: define the goals, scope, stakeholders, and requirements.
  2. Design: choose an architecture, interfaces, data structures, and security controls appropriate to the application.
  3. Implement: write and integrate the code.
  4. Verify: test behavior, quality, and security, then address discovered problems.
  5. Release and deploy: make the application available in its intended environment.
  6. Operate and maintain: fix defects, adapt to changes, respond to incidents, and eventually retire the application when appropriate.

IBM describes a commonly used seven-phase SDLC—planning, analysis, design, coding, testing, deployment, and maintenance—and distinguishes sequential waterfall work from iterative approaches that can overlap activities. AHRQ’s framework includes additional activities such as initiation, requirements analysis, implementation, operations, and retirement, while emphasizing that methods should be tailored to project needs. Which development approach or toolset should a team use?

There is no universal “application development system” to select. Choose a process and toolset in light of the actual project, team, and delivery environment. Useful questions include:

Game Programming Patterns
  • Brand New in box. The product ships with all relevant accessories
  • Feedback cadence: Does the work benefit from sequential phase handoffs, or from shorter cycles and repeated feedback?
  • Project fit: What do the requirements, risks, organizational constraints, and delivery context call for? AHRQ explicitly notes that methods should be tailored rather than assumed to fit every project.
  • Tool integration: Do editing, version control, testing, knowledge sharing, and deployment connect well enough for the team’s workflow?
  • Platform scope: Are the chosen tools intended for the target platform? Xcode is specific to Apple development; Android’s application architecture has its own platform concepts.
  • Security coverage: Does the process address security and privacy through requirements, design, verification, release, and response?

Waterfall and iterative approaches are examples of process choices, not an exhaustive list or a requirement that every team adopt one named method.

Why do platform-specific components matter?

“Application components” can mean different things depending on whether the discussion concerns the development setup or an application’s runtime architecture. Development-time components are tools and practices such as source control and testing. In Android, by contrast, the official documentation identifies four Android application component types: activities, services, broadcast receivers, and content providers. These are Android-specific building blocks, not a universal component list for all applications. Android Developers: Application fundamentals

How should security and privacy fit into development?

They should be addressed throughout development and operation, rather than added only after release. Microsoft’s Security Development Lifecycle describes activities including training, requirements, design, implementation, verification, release, and response, and states: “Security and privacy should never be an afterthought when developing secure software.” This is Microsoft’s guidance. Security also reaches beyond application code.
