An anonymous web proxy is a forward proxy that relays your web connection so the destination sees the proxy’s network address instead of your client IP address. That can hide your IP from the destination, but it does not make you unidentifiable: the proxy operator may see where you connect, and accounts, cookies, and other signals can still identify you.
How an anonymous web proxy works
A forward proxy acts on behalf of a client requesting resources from other servers. You connect to the proxy, and it forwards the request to the destination. In the documented proxy design, the destination receives the proxy’s network address rather than your client’s address. The proxy, in turn, may learn the destination you are contacting. MDN’s overview of proxy servers and tunneling explains the forward-proxy role; Cloudflare’s Privacy Proxy documentation illustrates how one managed service describes this visibility boundary.
What “anonymous” means—and what it does not
Here, “anonymous” means that the proxy can obscure your client IP address from the destination at the network-connection boundary. It does not establish that a person cannot be identified by other means. A destination may still recognize an account, cookies, or browser behavior, while the proxy operator may have its own view of your connection. The sources cited here do not establish that an anonymous proxy prevents those other forms of identification.
The word is also used in some discussions as part of a “transparent / anonymous / elite” proxy taxonomy. The cited standards do not define that three-level classification as a universal standard. It is more useful to ask what address and proxy-related information a particular proxy reveals than to rely on a label alone.

What the proxy operator can see
Using a proxy shifts trust from the destination-facing connection to the intermediary. RFC 9458, the IETF standard for Oblivious HTTP, notes that a client-configured proxy can reduce IP-address tracking, but a proxy handling traffic without TLS can see its contents. TLS can protect application contents in transit, though connection handling involves trade-offs in the context described by the RFC. Read RFC 9458 for the standard’s discussion.
Do not assume every proxy has the same visibility. For example, Cloudflare says its Privacy Proxy uses MASQUE methods over HTTP/2 and HTTP/3: its client authenticates to the proxy, the proxy learns the destination but not the tunneled content, and the destination sees the proxy’s egress address rather than the client’s. Those are claims about that service’s documented design, not guarantees for proxies in general. Cloudflare’s documentation describes that flow.

How HTTPS CONNECT tunneling fits in
HTTP CONNECT asks an intermediary to establish a tunnel to a destination origin server. Once the tunnel is established, the intermediary blindly forwards data in both directions until the tunnel closes. A client can then use TLS through the tunnel to protect application contents in transit. CONNECT is a way to establish a tunnel, not an anonymity guarantee: the intermediary still handles the connection, and network intermediaries can create security or interoperability problems if they violate HTTP semantics.

How a forward proxy differs from an interception proxy
A configured forward proxy is selected by the client to relay requests. An interception proxy is not chosen by the client; it may filter or redirect traffic. Both are intermediaries, but the distinction matters when evaluating who placed the proxy in the connection path and what control the client has over it. RFC 9110 describes interception proxies and the risks that network intermediaries can introduce. See RFC 9110.

Questions to ask about a proxy
- What does the destination see? Does it receive the proxy’s address, or can the proxy reveal the client address or other proxy signals?
- What can the operator see or log? A proxy may know the destination even when it cannot read TLS-protected application contents.
- Is application traffic protected by TLS? A tunnel alone does not encrypt application data; TLS provides protection for the connection inside it.
- Which traffic is handled? Confirm which protocols and connections go through the proxy rather than assuming it covers all device traffic.
- Was the proxy explicitly configured? A client-chosen forward proxy differs from an interception proxy inserted into the path without the client’s choice.
