An Android launcher changes the phone’s home-screen experience, not Android itself. It can replace the default home app and control how apps, shortcuts, widgets, folders, icons, gestures, search and the app drawer are presented. It cannot turn one Android phone into a different operating system or promise control over every system screen. The exact controls depend on the launcher, Android version and phone manufacturer.
What an Android launcher is
A launcher is the home-screen application you see after unlocking the phone and pressing Home. It draws the home pages, places app icons and widgets, opens the app drawer and handles launcher-specific actions such as swipes, icon presses and search. Android ships with a manufacturer-selected launcher, but it also supports replacements. The Android Open Source Project states in the Android 12 Compatibility Definition, section 3.8.1: “Android includes a launcher application (home screen) and support for third-party applications to replace the device launcher (home screen).”
Replacing the launcher does not replace the Android operating system, the phone’s firmware or the applications installed on it. Think of the launcher as a presentation and navigation layer sitting above Android’s system services. It decides what the home screen looks like and how you reach apps; Android still supplies the permissions, notifications, settings, security model and hardware support underneath.

What a launcher can change
Home-screen pages and app placement
A launcher can provide different home-screen pages, grids, docks and favorite areas. You can usually move icons, remove them from a page, change the number of rows and columns, and choose which page opens first. Android Help describes adding and removing favorites and opening Home settings; the labels and available controls vary by device.

Removing an icon with a Home-screen “Remove” action only removes that shortcut from the page. It does not uninstall the application. An “Uninstall” command is a separate action that removes the app from the device, subject to Android and manufacturer restrictions.
App drawer and app organization
The app drawer is the launcher’s view of installed applications. Depending on the product, it may be a paged grid, a continuously scrolling list, a categorized view or a searchable panel. Some launchers offer drawer folders, alphabetical sorting, hidden-app lists or custom tabs. These are launcher features, not capabilities guaranteed by Android or by every replacement.
Hiding an app in a launcher changes its visibility in that launcher. It does not necessarily stop the app, revoke its permissions, remove its data or uninstall it. Use Android’s App info, permission and uninstall controls when you need to manage the application itself.
Widgets and app shortcuts
A widget is supplied by an app, while the launcher hosts it on a home-screen page. A launcher can let you add, move, stack or resize supported widgets, but the widget’s developer determines the content and supported sizes. If a widget does not offer a particular size or action, changing launchers cannot invent that capability.
App shortcuts are actions exposed by an app, such as opening a specific conversation or starting a navigation destination. A launcher can display those shortcuts when Android and the app provide them. Long-press an app or shortcut to see what the current launcher exposes.

Folders, icons and visual layout
Most launchers let you create folders by dragging one icon onto another, rename folders and move them between pages. Many also support icon packs, adaptive-icon shapes, custom sizes, label visibility, padding, wallpapers and transition animations. Compatibility matters: an icon pack may work in one launcher and not another, and some visual options require a paid edition or a launcher-specific add-on.
The arrangement, spacing and appearance of icons can therefore look completely different without changing the underlying apps. A banking app remains the same banking app; only the shortcut and its surrounding presentation have changed.
Gestures, search and notification indicators
Launcher-defined gestures can assign actions to swipes, double taps, pinches or long presses. Search may cover apps, contacts, settings or web results, depending on the launcher and its integrations. Notification dots or badges can show that an app has unread activity when Android, the launcher and the app support the required notification access.
These features are product-specific. For example, Nova documents gestures, notification badges and app-drawer folders; Lawnchair documents controls for the home screen, app drawer, icons, widgets, search and layout; Niagara uses a list-oriented interface with its own widget and wallpaper approach. Those examples show the range of launcher designs, not a checklist that every launcher must provide.
What a launcher cannot be expected to change
Android’s operating system and system settings
A launcher does not replace Android, the kernel, the manufacturer’s firmware or the phone’s update channel. It cannot guarantee changes to system settings, battery management, hardware drivers, storage behavior or security policies. It may provide a shortcut into Settings, but Android still controls the setting.

Every system surface
Do not assume that installing a launcher changes the lock screen, notification shade, quick settings, keyboard, share sheet, power menu or other system surfaces. Some launchers can offer gestures or shortcuts that open those surfaces, and Android versions expose different APIs, but access is not the same as ownership. Manufacturer software can also keep particular screens outside the launcher’s control.
Individual apps and their interfaces
A launcher cannot redesign an app’s internal screens, add features to it or force it to expose a widget or shortcut. It can place an app icon or supported shortcut on the home screen; once the app opens, the app’s own interface and Android’s permission rules apply.
Performance and battery guarantees
A lightweight launcher may feel faster on a particular phone, while animations, live wallpapers or frequent searches may consume additional resources. There is no universal performance result. Effects depend on the launcher build, Android version, display, memory, background limits and the rest of the installed software. Treat claims about speed or battery life as device-specific unless measured under clearly stated conditions.
Private Space and restricted Android features
Android’s platform rules can require explicit roles and permissions before a launcher can display certain content. Android 15 documentation says a launcher must hold the ROLE_HOME role and declare ACCESS_HIDDEN_PROFILES for apps in Private Space to appear, with additional handling requirements. A launcher that does not implement those requirements may not show Private Space apps even if it otherwise works as the default home app. This is an Android platform boundary, not evidence that the apps were deleted.
How to install and set a launcher as the default
The names and location of menus vary by manufacturer and Android release. Google’s Android Help explicitly cautions that steps can differ by device, so use the following as a reliable route rather than a universal word-for-word path.

- Install a launcher from a trusted app store. Check its Android-version support, permissions, privacy disclosures and whether features you need are free or paid.
- Open the launcher once. It may offer an import tool for the current layout or ask for access needed for optional features such as notification badges.
- Open Settings and find the default-app controls. Search Settings for “Default apps,” “Default applications,” “Home app” or “Launcher.” On some phones this is under Apps; on others it is under Home screen or a similarly named customization section.
- Select the new launcher as the Home app. Choose the installed launcher and confirm if Android presents a confirmation dialog. Press Home to test it.
- Configure the layout. Add the widgets, shortcuts and folders you need, then review the launcher’s Home and drawer settings. If prompted, allow only the permissions required for the features you intend to use.
- Keep a recovery route. Know how to return to the manufacturer launcher from the same default-app menu. If the new launcher crashes or loses its role, Android’s Settings app remains the place to change the Home app.
If no Home-app option appears, the phone may restrict third-party launchers, the app may be incompatible with that Android build, or a manufacturer setting may be hiding the choice. Updating the phone and launcher can help, but do not assume an update will remove an OEM restriction.
Why setup differs between phones
Android defines support for replacement launchers, but manufacturers decide how their settings screens, gesture navigation and default-app policies are implemented. A launcher can work normally on one model and have missing gestures, navigation conflicts or default-selection problems on another. Confirm behavior on the exact phone, Android release and firmware build.
Example: Xiaomi HyperOS behavior
Niagara’s support documentation, last updated June 23, 2025, reports an issue on Xiaomi devices running HyperOS 2.0 and above that may prevent setting a third-party launcher as the default. The page describes a workaround for the affected configuration. This is a vendor-documented example, not a universal rule for every Xiaomi phone or every later build. If you use such a device, check the current Xiaomi and launcher instructions before relying on a particular menu path.
When navigation gestures stop working
Some phones treat the manufacturer launcher as a privileged component for edge-swipe navigation or recent-app animations. After switching launchers, test Home, Back, Recents, edge gestures and rotation. If a gesture is missing, look for the phone’s navigation-mode setting and the launcher’s gesture settings; if the firmware still limits it, the launcher cannot override that system policy.

How widgets, shortcuts and folders behave after switching
- Widgets: Add them from the launcher’s widget picker or by long-pressing an empty area. A widget may need to be added again because launchers store layouts separately.
- Shortcuts: Long-press an app to see the shortcuts it publishes. Unsupported shortcuts will not appear merely because another launcher is installed.
- Folders: Recreate or import folders if the new launcher cannot read the old launcher’s backup format.
- Icons: Reapply icon packs, label settings and shapes in the new launcher; these preferences normally belong to the launcher, not to Android globally.
- Uninstalling the old launcher: Do not remove the manufacturer launcher until you have confirmed that the replacement can be selected as Home and that you know how to recover from a crash.
Choosing between launcher styles
There is no universal best launcher. Choose according to the navigation model and controls you actually want.

Common mistakes and fixes
Confusing Remove with Uninstall
If an icon disappears, open the app drawer or Android Settings > Apps to check whether the app is still installed. Use the system Uninstall command only when you intend to remove the application.
Expecting the old layout to transfer perfectly
Launcher backups are often proprietary. Export the old launcher’s layout if it offers that function, but expect to re-add widgets, shortcuts and some folders manually. Widget state can also be reset because the widget provider, rather than the launcher, owns its data.
Granting every permission automatically
Read the permission explanation for notification access, accessibility services or contacts before enabling it. A launcher should still be able to provide basic icons and folders without optional access that you do not need.
Assuming a hidden app is secure
Launcher hiding is an organizational feature. It is not a substitute for Android’s app lock, Private Space, work profile or device encryption. Use the platform security feature that matches the protection you need.
Getting stuck with a broken default
Return to Settings and search for Home app or Default apps, then select the manufacturer launcher. If the replacement is unstable, clear only its layout or configuration after backing up anything important; clearing launcher data can erase its home-screen arrangement.
The practical boundary
Use a launcher when you want a different way to arrange and reach the apps already on your phone: a cleaner home page, a denser grid, a list instead of icons, stronger drawer organization, custom gestures, alternative widgets or a new visual style. Do not install one expecting a new operating system, a redesigned lock screen, control of every notification or settings surface, changes inside individual apps, or guaranteed performance improvements.
The safest expectation is precise: a launcher replaces the Home app where the phone permits it and changes the home-screen layer within Android’s APIs. Everything beyond that boundary depends on the launcher’s implementation, Android’s current roles and permissions, and the manufacturer’s firmware.
