Alexa+ is Amazon’s generative-AI assistant built as a more conversational, personalized extension of Alexa. It can keep context across follow-up requests, use information you provide, and carry out tasks such as reservations, takeout orders, ride bookings, home-service scheduling and calendar coordination. In the United States, full Alexa+ is included with Prime, costs $19.99 per month without Prime, and has a limited free text-chat tier for non-Prime customers.
What is Alexa+?
Alexa+ is Amazon’s next-generation assistant that combines the familiar Alexa interface with generative-AI capabilities. Amazon says it is designed to understand longer, more natural conversations, remember relevant context and complete multi-step tasks instead of responding only to one short command at a time. The service is available through compatible Alexa-enabled devices, the Alexa mobile app and Alexa.com; Amazon also describes experiences in Fire TV and the Amazon Music app. An Echo speaker is one way to use Alexa+, not a stated requirement for every customer.
Amazon’s description is a product claim rather than an independent performance test. The exact features available to an account can depend on country, language, device, connected services and the task you request.

Amazon’s U.S. announcement confirms the Prime benefit covers the household, not just the person whose account pays for Prime. A Canadian reader should not convert the U.S. price: Amazon publishes a separate Canadian amount and says tax is extra. Prices, included benefits and supported countries can change, so verify the offer shown for your Amazon account before subscribing.
Amazon says Alexa+ is available to all customers in the United States and Canada and is in early access in several additional countries. Language support, integrations and individual features vary by region. What an Alexa+ subscription includes
Longer, more natural conversations
Regular voice assistants are generally optimized for a single request followed by a single response. Alexa+ is intended to continue a conversation, answer follow-up questions and retain context over time. That means you can refine a request without repeating every detail. Amazon describes the service as more conversational and personalized than the Alexa experience customers already know.

Amazon’s feature availability depends on your account and region, and a particular response can still require clarification or a compatible service.

Tasks that go beyond answering questions
Amazon gives examples of Alexa+ acting as an intermediary between you and other services. Depending on the integration and location, it can help find restaurants and make reservations, order takeout, book a ride, schedule a home repair and coordinate calendars. These are capabilities Amazon describes; they are not guarantees that every restaurant, ride provider or contractor in your area can be booked through Alexa+.
The practical difference is that Alexa+ may turn a request into a sequence of actions: identify an option, collect the details needed to proceed and submit the request. You should still check confirmations, prices, timing and cancellation terms supplied by the underlying service.
Personalized answers and stored context
Amazon says you can share information such as recipes, important dates, dietary needs and documents so Alexa+ can use that context in later responses or tasks. For example, dietary information can influence meal suggestions, while a saved date can inform planning. The usefulness depends on the information you provide and whether the relevant feature is offered in your market.

Because this personalization is account-specific, do not assume that a household member will see the same context or that a third-party service will receive every detail. Review the account and service settings presented when you connect an integration.

Smart-home routines and integrations
Alexa+ can control and coordinate supported smart-home products and routines. Amazon names Philips Hue, Roborock and Ring among examples of products or services that can participate in Alexa+ experiences. A compatible product is optional; none of those brands is required to subscribe.
Some Ring capabilities may require a separate Ring subscription. Alexa+ does not automatically include that paid service. Other integrations can have their own account, regional or subscription requirements.
Multiple ways to use it
Amazon lists three primary access routes: compatible Alexa-enabled devices, Alexa.com and the Alexa mobile app. An Echo device can provide hands-free use around the home, while the web and app allow access without purchasing a speaker. Amazon’s product announcement also describes Alexa+ experiences through Fire TV and the Amazon Music app, although the exact functions can vary by device and country.

Alexa+ is therefore an upgrade layer, not a completely separate hardware platform. A customer who does not subscribe can continue using the regular Alexa experience where it is supported; the paid plan is for the additional generative-AI features and unlimited access described by Amazon.

Do you need an Echo device?
No. Amazon explicitly lists Alexa.com and the Alexa app as access points, so an Echo is not required for every Alexa+ customer. An Echo smart speaker is useful if you want hands-free voice interaction in a room, but you can start with the web or mobile app instead.
Whether a particular Echo or other Alexa-enabled device supports Alexa+ is account-, region- and model-dependent. The reviewed Amazon help information does not provide a complete current model-by-model list. Where Alexa+ is available
Amazon’s published availability covers the United States and Canada for all customers, with early access in several additional countries. Availability does not mean identical functionality everywhere: supported languages, third-party integrations, device models and specific actions can differ.
For a travel or relocation scenario, check the country associated with your Amazon account and the local Alexa app or website. A U.S. Prime benefit and U.S. price should not be assumed to transfer to another marketplace. Canada is a documented example where Amazon publishes a different standalone price.

How to start using Alexa+
- Identify your account tier. Sign in to the Amazon account used for Prime, or decide whether you want the limited free chat tier or unlimited paid access.
- Open an access point. Use Alexa.com, the Alexa mobile app or a compatible Alexa-enabled device. If you plan to use an Echo, verify that model’s current support before relying on it.
- Review the offer shown for your country. Confirm the currency, monthly price, tax treatment and whether the screen describes full access or usage-limited chat.
- Connect only the services you need. Reservations, rides, home repairs, calendars and smart-home controls depend on supported integrations. Follow each service’s sign-in and permission prompts.
- Begin with a bounded request. Ask a question, then add a follow-up or preference to test whether context is working. For an action such as a booking or order, review the final details before confirming.
- Check regional limits when something is missing. An unavailable action may reflect country, language, device or integration support rather than a problem with your subscription.
Amazon’s reported usage figures: how to interpret them
Amazon says customers are interacting with Alexa+ more than twice as much overall in its U.S. availability article. Amazon Canada separately reports that Canadian customers are engaging with Alexa+ twice as much as with the previous generation, using smart-home features 60% more and requesting five times as many recipes. These are Amazon-published early usage observations, not independent surveys or laboratory measurements. Amazon does not provide a detailed methodology alongside those claims, and higher usage does not by itself prove better answer accuracy.

Which Alexa+ option fits?
Prime members
If you already pay for Prime in the United States or Canada, full Alexa+ access is included for the household, so there is no separate Alexa+ charge to weigh. The decision is mainly whether your devices, region and preferred integrations support the features you want.

The free text-chat tier is a low-commitment way to try quick answers, planning, research and topic exploration through Alexa.com or the app. Its usage limit means it is not equivalent to unlimited access and does not represent the full device-based experience.
Non-Prime customers who want regular, cross-device use
The U.S. $19.99 monthly plan or Canada’s CAD $27.99 monthly plan plus tax is aimed at customers who want unlimited full access across supported devices, web and app. Compare that recurring cost with how often you expect to use conversational context, personalization and action-taking integrations. There is no universal value verdict: the subscription is more compelling when those capabilities are central to your routine, while occasional text questions may be adequately served by the free tier.
Important limitations to check before subscribing
- Compatibility is not universal. Confirm your exact device, account and country in Amazon’s current compatibility information.
- Integrations determine what Alexa+ can do. A restaurant booking, ride, repair request or smart-home action requires a supported service and may have separate terms.
- Some services cost extra. Amazon notes that certain Ring features can require a Ring subscription; Alexa+ does not include that subscription.
- Regional prices and features differ. Use the marketplace-specific offer rather than applying U.S. pricing or capabilities elsewhere.
- Usage claims are company-reported. Amazon’s interaction and recipe figures should not be read as independent proof of accuracy or reliability.
