Chinese AI developers can choose from Huawei Ascend accelerators and Atlas systems, Alibaba T-Head processors, and products from Biren, Hygon, Iluvatar CoreX, MetaX, and Moore Threads. The evidence does not show a universal, drop-in Nvidia replacement. The practical choice depends on whether you are training or serving models, which frameworks and operators you need, what server or cluster you can obtain, how much code you can port, and whether the product is available through your procurement channel.

Huawei currently offers the most completely documented domestic stack in the available evidence: Ascend processors, the CANN software platform, and Atlas systems. Even there, vendor ecosystem claims should not be treated as independent performance benchmarks. A sound evaluation measures your model, precision, batch size, interconnect, and software release on hardware you can actually procure.

The main Chinese alternatives at a glance

There are two different questions behind “alternative to Nvidia.” One is whether a processor can execute a particular model. The other is whether a complete system can train, fine-tune, or serve that model at the required scale. A processor listed in a procurement certification does not automatically provide the compiler, kernels, interconnect, memory capacity, support organization, or serving software needed by a production team.

Option What is documented What is not established by the available evidence
Huawei Ascend with CANN Huawei reports support for more than 90 open-source projects, including PyTorch, Triton, vLLM, and veRL; more than 40 models pretrained natively on Ascend and CANN; and more than 5,200 monthly active CANN developers (September 2026). No independent, normalized comparison with Nvidia for a fixed model, precision, batch size, cluster, and current software release.
Huawei Atlas systems Huawei says its Atlas 900 A3 SuperPoD, launched in March 2025, can use up to 384 Ascend 910C chips and deliver up to 300 PFLOPS. Those are vendor system specifications, not a like-for-like application benchmark or proof that every developer can buy the configuration.
Alibaba T-Head A May 2026 procurement certification report listed T-Head Zhenwu M530 and M890 processors. Current retail access, software coverage, model support, and training or inference performance for a specific workload.
Biren, Hygon, Iluvatar CoreX, MetaX, and Moore Threads The same May 2026 report listed products from these suppliers in a Chinese procurement certification list. Certification does not establish open-market availability, compatibility with your stack, or suitability for a particular model.

The certification reporting applies to specified processors and procurement channels. Treat it as an access signal, not as a guarantee that a cloud instance, server, or complete cluster is available to your organization.

Why Huawei Ascend is the most documented complete stack

Processor, software, and infrastructure are presented together

Huawei’s proposition is broader than a chip. Ascend processors are paired with CANN, the software layer used to compile and run workloads, and Atlas infrastructure for servers and larger systems. That integration matters because model execution depends on the compiler, kernels, communication libraries, memory management, and deployment tools as much as on the silicon.

In September 2026, Huawei said Ascend supported more than 90 third-party open-source projects, explicitly naming PyTorch, Triton, vLLM, and veRL. Huawei also said more than 40 models had been pretrained natively on Ascend and CANN and that CANN had more than 5,200 monthly active developers. These figures indicate an expanding ecosystem, but they are vendor-reported ecosystem measures. They do not tell you whether the exact operators, precision modes, distributed-training features, or serving path used by your application are production-ready.

Atlas 900 A3 SuperPoD is a system-level option

For organizations evaluating an entire installation rather than an individual accelerator, Huawei says it launched the Atlas 900 A3 SuperPoD in March 2025 with up to 384 Ascend 910C chips and up to 300 PFLOPS. “Up to” describes the vendor’s maximum stated configuration. It does not provide a normalized comparison with an Nvidia system, and it does not mean every buyer can obtain that configuration, networking arrangement, or software image.

Ask a supplier to specify the exact chip count, memory per chip, interconnect topology, host processors, storage, supported CANN release, and operational support included in a quotation. A system that looks adequate on aggregate compute can still fail a workload because the model does not fit in memory, collective communication scales poorly, or a required operator falls back to a slower path.

Support claims must be checked at feature level

“Supports PyTorch” is not a complete compatibility statement. Before committing, record the framework version, model architecture, tokenizer, custom operations, numerical precision, distributed strategy, checkpoint format, and serving framework you use. Then obtain confirmation for each item on the target Ascend and CANN release. The same discipline applies to Triton, vLLM, veRL, and any other project in your stack: project-level support does not guarantee that every feature or plugin works.

Other domestic processor families

Alibaba T-Head

The May 2026 procurement certification report named T-Head Zhenwu M530 and M890. That is useful evidence that specified T-Head processors had entered a covered procurement process. It does not establish the current availability of developer kits, servers, cloud capacity, compiler documentation, PyTorch integration, or large-model training performance. A team considering T-Head should request a complete software bill of materials and a runnable reference for its own model rather than infer capability from the certification alone.

Biren, Hygon, Iluvatar CoreX, MetaX, and Moore Threads

The same report listed products from Biren, Hygon, Iluvatar CoreX, MetaX, and Moore Threads. These names represent potential domestic accelerator paths, but the available evidence does not provide a comparable specification or benchmark table for them. Their practical value therefore depends on direct access to a supported system and on the maturity of the tools your workload needs.

For each supplier, ask five concrete questions:

  • Which exact processor and board configuration is available to your organization?
  • Which framework, compiler, kernel, communication, and serving versions are supported?
  • Which operators and precision modes are accelerated, and which fall back to host execution?
  • What multi-device topology and memory capacity are offered?
  • Who handles driver updates, compiler bugs, model-porting work, and production incidents?

If a supplier cannot answer these questions with a tested software image and a reproducible example, treat the option as an evaluation lead rather than a production replacement.

Choose by workload: training is not inference

Large-model pretraining

Pretraining stresses memory capacity, high-bandwidth communication, distributed optimizer states, checkpointing, and sustained utilization across many devices. A processor that serves an already-trained model may be unsuitable for this workload. In July 2025, a MERICS report described Huawei chips as especially unsuitable for large-LLM training runs at that time and recounted a DeepSeek assessment that the then-current Ascend 910C was inadequate for training. This is dated historical context, not a verdict on later chips, later software, or every possible training job.

Use that history as a reason to benchmark rather than as a permanent conclusion. If pretraining is your goal, require a measured run of a representative model at the intended precision and parallelism. Record time per training step, scaling efficiency as devices are added, memory headroom, failed-step recovery, and checkpoint throughput. Without those measurements, a headline compute figure cannot tell you whether a training run is viable.

Fine-tuning and continued pretraining

Fine-tuning can have a very different resource profile from training a model from scratch. Parameter-efficient methods, shorter context windows, smaller batches, or a frozen base model may reduce memory and communication requirements. Do not assume that a chip rejected for a frontier-scale pretraining job is unsuitable for every adaptation task, or that successful fine-tuning proves it can handle full pretraining. Test the exact method, sequence length, optimizer, and checkpoint format you plan to operate.

Batch inference

Batch inference prioritizes throughput, memory capacity, and predictable scheduling. Measure tokens or requests processed per unit of time at the batch sizes your users or pipeline can sustain. Check whether larger batches trigger memory exhaustion or operator fallbacks. A vendor’s project-support list can help identify a starting point, but it does not supply your application’s throughput number.

Online serving

Interactive serving adds latency targets, concurrency spikes, queueing, model loading time, and operational recovery. Verify the serving framework, streaming behavior, quantization path, tokenizer integration, and observability tools. A model that runs in an offline script may still miss an online service-level objective if compilation, data transfer, or request batching introduces delays.

Software migration is usually the largest hidden cost

Inventory the current Nvidia-dependent surface

Before selecting hardware, make an inventory of everything that currently depends on the Nvidia software stack: framework integrations, custom CUDA kernels, fused operators, quantization libraries, collective-communication calls, profiling tools, container images, and deployment scripts. Classify each item as portable, requiring a vendor equivalent, or requiring a rewrite.

Do not count a model as migrated because its Python code imports successfully. A complete migration also requires compiling kernels, loading checkpoints, running distributed communication, reproducing numerical results within an acceptable tolerance, and observing production behavior under load.

Use a staged port

  1. Freeze a reference run. Record the model revision, dataset slice, precision, batch size, sequence length, optimizer settings, output checks, and performance on the existing system.
  2. Build the target environment. Fix the operating-system image, driver, compiler, CANN or equivalent toolkit, framework version, communication library, and container boundaries before comparing results.
  3. Run a single-device smoke test. Confirm that model loading, forward passes, backward passes where relevant, checkpoint writing, and restart behavior work on the target processor.
  4. Exercise difficult operators. Test attention variants, normalization, embedding, quantization, custom kernels, and any operation that previously relied on a specialized Nvidia implementation.
  5. Scale gradually. Move from one device to a small group, then to the intended topology. Measure communication overhead and synchronization failures at each step.
  6. Validate outputs and performance. Compare accuracy, loss curves, numerical stability, latency, throughput, memory use, and failure recovery with the reference run.
  7. Document rollback. Keep the known-good environment and checkpoints available until the target stack has passed acceptance tests.

A 2025 congressional witness statement raised concerns about CANN compatibility at that time. Huawei’s later support figures show that the ecosystem is evolving, so neither the older criticism nor the newer vendor counts should settle your decision. Evaluate the exact current release and the exact features your code uses.

System design and scaling questions

An accelerator is only one component of a usable AI system. Compare the complete configuration on these axes:

  • Memory: total device memory, usable memory after runtime overhead, and whether the model plus optimizer states fit without excessive sharding.
  • Interconnect: the topology between devices and hosts, communication bandwidth, and the collective libraries used by your training or serving framework.
  • Host and storage: CPU capacity, data-loading path, local storage, checkpoint destination, and restart time.
  • Software image: driver, compiler, runtime, framework, kernel, and serving versions that the supplier supports together.
  • Operations: monitoring, diagnostics, firmware updates, spare capacity, and escalation support.
  • Procurement: whether the exact board or system is obtainable through your organization’s permitted channel and on the schedule your project requires.

The Atlas 900 A3 SuperPoD figures illustrate why system-level claims need system-level questions: a maximum of 384 Ascend 910C chips and 300 PFLOPS says nothing by itself about your model’s scaling efficiency, memory fit, or delivered availability.

A practical decision process

Step 1: Define the acceptance workload

Write one primary acceptance case instead of asking whether a processor is “AI capable.” Specify the model, training or inference task, precision, batch or concurrency target, context length, latency or throughput objective, and maximum acceptable migration effort. Add a second workload only if it represents a real near-term requirement.

Step 2: Filter for access

Remove options that cannot be procured in the required form. A certification list may indicate an approved channel, but it is not proof of open retail availability or a transaction-specific guarantee. Ask for a written quotation or an evaluation system with the exact processor, memory, networking, and software image.

Step 3: Filter for software

Map every required framework and operator to a supported target release. For Huawei, start with the reported CANN support for PyTorch, Triton, vLLM, and veRL, then verify the specific versions and features. For other suppliers, require equivalent documentation before investing in a port.

Step 4: Run a representative pilot

Use the real model or a faithful production slice. Synthetic peak-compute tests can hide memory pressure, communication costs, and unsupported operators. Capture both successful performance and the engineering time needed to fix failures.

Step 5: Price migration and operations

Include engineer time for kernel changes, debugging, validation, container maintenance, monitoring, and incident response. A lower hardware quote can be uneconomic if every framework update requires bespoke porting or if a missing operator blocks releases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 6: Decide by workload, not brand substitution

Choose the option that meets the acceptance criteria with an acceptable support and procurement risk. It is entirely reasonable to use one domestic platform for inference and another for a different internal workload if the software and operational boundaries are clear.

Model-chip co-design is becoming part of the strategy

Export controls and hardware constraints are encouraging teams to adapt models and systems around the processors they can obtain. The Asia Society’s Center for China Analysis reported that Z.ai announced in January 2026 that GLM-Image was trained on Huawei Ascend Atlas servers and MindSpore. This establishes a reported deployment example, not general availability or equivalent performance to another platform.

The broader lesson is practical: hardware selection can influence model architecture, kernel choices, precision, parallelism, and serving design. If your organization controls the model roadmap, involve hardware and compiler engineers before architecture decisions are fixed. If you consume third-party models, ask whether the provider publishes a target stack and tested deployment path.

What the current evidence can and cannot prove

It can show ecosystem direction

Huawei’s reported project, model, and developer counts indicate substantial work around Ascend and CANN. The Atlas announcement shows that Huawei is positioning complete systems, not only individual processors. The procurement report shows that several domestic suppliers have appeared in a covered certification process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It cannot rank the suppliers

No normalized independent comparison is provided for a fixed model, precision, batch size, system configuration, and current software version. Therefore, the evidence cannot establish that any named option is an equal replacement, a faster replacement, or a drop-in replacement for Nvidia across workloads.

It cannot turn certification into availability

Procurement certification applies to specified products and channels. Confirm that the exact product is obtainable, supported, and deployable by your organization before treating it as an option.

It cannot turn one training assessment into a permanent verdict

The July 2025 assessment of Ascend 910C reflects the state described at that time. Later chips, software releases, model changes, and smaller workloads may produce different results. Keep the date and workload attached to every conclusion.

Evaluation checklist

  • Have you identified whether the first target is pretraining, fine-tuning, batch inference, or online serving?
  • Have you specified model size, context length, precision, batch or concurrency, and success metrics?
  • Have you verified exact framework, operator, compiler, communication, and serving support?
  • Have you confirmed memory capacity and the interconnect of the deliverable system?
  • Have you tested a representative workload rather than relying on peak PFLOPS?
  • Have you measured migration labor, numerical differences, throughput, latency, and failure recovery?
  • Have you confirmed procurement route, delivery timing, support ownership, and update policy?
  • Have you preserved a rollback environment and documented the acceptance results?

For most teams, the responsible answer is not “replace Nvidia with one named chip.” It is to select a procurable domestic stack for a defined workload, prove the software path with a representative pilot, and expand only after system and operational tests pass.
