Use the Windows NTFS default—normally 4 KB—for a general-purpose volume. Choose 64 KB only when the volume is dedicated to a documented large-file workload, such as VHDX files larger than 1 TB or Windows Server Data Deduplication. Microsoft community guidance also commonly recommends 64 KB for Hyper-V and SQL Server data or log volumes, but those designs should be validated against the complete storage layout.
A large disk does not automatically need large clusters. Allocation unit size must match the files and applications on the volume: 64 KB can reduce allocation overhead for very large sequential files, while 4 KB wastes less space when the same volume contains many small files.
What NTFS allocation unit size actually controls
NTFS stores files in clusters, also called allocation units. The cluster size is the smallest amount of volume space NTFS allocates to a file or to a portion of a file. A file grows in whole-cluster increments, so the space reserved is rounded up to the next cluster boundary.
For example, a 1 KB file on a volume formatted with 4 KB clusters normally consumes one 4 KB allocation unit. On a 64 KB volume, that same file consumes one 64 KB allocation unit. The larger setting therefore reduces the number of allocation units needed for a very large sequential file, but increases slack space—the unused portion of the final cluster assigned to a file.

You select the allocation unit size while formatting the volume. NTFS does not provide an in-place switch that changes an existing volume from 4 KB to 64 KB. Changing it requires backing up, migrating, or restoring the data, reformatting the volume, and then copying the data back.
Choose by workload, not disk capacity

When 4 KB is the right answer
General-purpose storage
Keep the default 4 KB format for a volume that mixes office files, source code, application data, photos, installers, archives, and other files with widely varying sizes. This setting is the safest baseline because it limits the amount of unused space at the end of small files and does not impose a special large-file layout on applications that do not need it.
Large files mixed with smaller files
A volume can hold movies, disk images, backups, and other large files while still benefiting from 4 KB clusters if it also contains thousands of small files. NTFS can store a multi-gigabyte file across many 4 KB clusters; the file size alone does not make 64 KB mandatory. The decision is about the distribution of files and the application’s I/O pattern, not the largest file present.

Removable or shared-use data volumes
If a volume will be moved between systems, repurposed, or used by several applications, 4 KB avoids committing the volume to a specialized layout without a documented reason. It also preserves more space when future users add small files.

When 64 KB is justified
VHDX files larger than 1 TB
Microsoft Learn specifically instructs administrators formatting volumes that host large files, giving VHDX files larger than 1 TB as the example, to use a 64 KB allocation unit and a large File Record Segment (large FRS). This is the clearest case for departing from the 4 KB default: a dedicated volume whose primary contents are very large virtual-disk files and whose format is being planned in advance.
Windows Server Data Deduplication
Microsoft’s same guidance applies to volumes used with Data Deduplication. The 64 KB allocation unit and large FRS are part of the documented formatting command for that scenario. Do not infer that every NTFS volume on a server should use 64 KB merely because one volume has deduplication enabled.
Hyper-V and SQL Server volumes
Microsoft Tech Community guidance commonly recommends 64 KB for Hyper-V storage and SQL Server data or log volumes because these workloads are dominated by large virtual-disk or database I/O. Treat this as workload-specific community guidance rather than a blanket rule or a measured promise of higher speed. Storage layout, controller and media behavior, queueing, fragmentation, compression, and application settings can outweigh cluster size.

Usually not by default. A movie file is large, so the slack space in its final cluster is negligible, but a 4 KB volume already stores the file efficiently enough for normal playback. If the disk is a dedicated media archive containing almost exclusively very large files, 64 KB is a reasonable design option; it is not a requirement and should not be selected solely because the files are video.

If the same volume also stores subtitles, metadata, project files, thumbnails, documents, torrent files, or application folders, 4 KB generally gives the better space trade-off. Playback performance is normally determined by the storage device, sustained transfer rate, filesystem health, and the media application’s access pattern rather than by a guaranteed advantage from 64 KB clusters.
How slack space changes with cluster size
NTFS rounds each file’s allocation up to a whole number of clusters. The wasted portion is less than one cluster per file, but the total can become substantial when a volume contains many small files.
- With 4 KB clusters, a 1 KB file normally reserves 4 KB, leaving about 3 KB unused inside its allocated unit.
- With 64 KB clusters, that same 1 KB file normally reserves 64 KB, leaving about 63 KB unused.
- A large file whose size is close to an exact multiple of either cluster size has little final-cluster waste under either format.
- The more small files a volume contains, the more the aggregate slack-space difference matters.
These figures describe allocation rounding, not the entire space consumed by NTFS metadata, directories, security data, compression behavior, or application-created sidecar files.

Does 64 KB make NTFS faster?
There is no universal performance winner. Larger clusters can reduce the number of allocation units that NTFS tracks for a large sequential file, which may simplify some large-file I/O patterns. That potential benefit depends on deployment and workload; it is not a guaranteed speed increase.

Microsoft’s guidance identifies storage hardware, access pattern, fragmentation, compression, and application behavior as relevant factors. A 64 KB format cannot compensate for slow media, an unsuitable RAID or storage-network design, random I/O, poor queueing, or an application that issues small requests. Conversely, a 4 KB volume can perform well for large files when the underlying storage and workload are well designed.
Because no independent benchmark establishes a universal gain, choose 64 KB for a documented workload requirement or a deliberate storage design—not as a generic performance tweak.

Formatting destroys the existing contents of the selected volume. Confirm the drive letter and complete a backup or migration before running either command.
PowerShell method
- Open Windows PowerShell or Windows Terminal with administrator privileges.
- Confirm that the target volume is the one you intend to erase and that its data has been backed up.
- Run the Microsoft-documented pattern, replacing the drive letter only when you have verified it:
Format-Volume -DriveLetter D -FileSystem NTFS -AllocationUnitSize 65536 -UseLargeFRS. - Allow formatting to complete, then create the required folders and restore or migrate the data.
The value 65536 is 65,536 bytes, or 64 KB. The -UseLargeFRS switch requests a large File Record Segment volume, which is part of Microsoft’s documented large-file and Data Deduplication guidance.

Elevated command-line method
Microsoft also documents the equivalent command-line form using /L for a large File Record Segment volume and /A:64K for a 64 KB allocation unit:
format D: /FS:NTFS /L /A:64K
Run it only against a confirmed, backed-up target. The command-line and PowerShell forms format the volume; neither converts an existing 4 KB volume in place.
Plan a change from 4 KB to 64 KB safely
- Inventory the workload. Count or estimate the proportion of small files, large sequential files, VHDX files, database files, and deduplicated data.
- Check the application requirement. Determine whether Microsoft documentation for the feature or workload calls for 64 KB and large FRS. For Hyper-V and SQL Server, treat community guidance as a starting point and validate it with the complete storage design.
- Measure the space trade-off. Estimate how many small files will share the volume; a larger cluster can reserve up to 64 KB per file’s final allocation unit.
- Schedule downtime or migration. Copy the data to another volume, restore from backup, or create a replacement volume. There is no safe in-place cluster-size conversion.
- Format and verify. Use the documented command, confirm the new volume’s intended role, and test the application before moving production data back.
Limits, compatibility, and version qualifications
NTFS volume and file-size limits depend on cluster size and Windows version. Microsoft’s current NTFS overview shows that larger cluster sizes can support larger theoretical limits, but an application, service, virtualization layer, or backup product may impose a lower limit. Do not choose 64 KB solely to pursue a theoretical maximum unless the software using the volume supports it.
