Alexa cannot generally inspect your computer or phone screen. Amazon’s documented visual features use the camera and display built into a compatible Echo Show. The camera supplies visual input for specific requests and sensing features; the Echo Show screen is where Alexa presents answers, calls, controls and personalized content.
That distinction matters for privacy and expectations. You can hold an item in front of an Echo Show and ask Alexa to identify it, or let supported features recognize an enrolled household member or detect that someone is nearby. You cannot infer from these features that Alexa has a remote desktop-style view of every screen in your home.
What “screen access” means on an Echo Show
An Echo Show combines a camera, microphones, speaker and touchscreen. In Amazon’s terminology, camera-equipped Echo devices use the camera for visual data, while the display provides the visual output. Amazon’s Alexa and Alexa Device FAQs describe camera use for video calls, Live View, taking pictures, identifying objects and surroundings in response to requests, and other device-dependent features.

How to ask Alexa to identify something
Show and Tell for a physical item
Show and Tell is Amazon’s named accessibility feature for visual identification. Amazon says it identifies common pantry items and other objects. Use it when you want the Echo Show to examine an item you are holding rather than interpret the room continuously.
- Stand or hold the item where the Echo Show camera can view it.
- Ask Alexa to identify the item, using a natural request such as asking what you are holding.
- Wait for the Echo Show to return an identification and brief description.
- If the result is uncertain, treat it as an assistance feature rather than proof of the item’s identity; verify important information yourself.
The documented capability supports a deliberate request. It does not say that Alexa permanently labels every object in view or keeps an uninterrupted visual record.

Objects and surroundings
Amazon’s Alexa and Alexa Device FAQs also describe identifying objects and surroundings in response to requests. The exact behavior depends on the Echo model and enabled feature. Ask when you need help with a particular view, and expect the response to be limited by the device’s compatibility and the information available to its vision feature.

How Alexa recognizes people and detects presence
Visual ID recognizes enrolled household members
Visual ID is different from object identification. On compatible devices, you enroll individual household members so the Echo Show can recognize them. Amazon’s documentation for the Echo Show 8 (2025 release) and Echo Show 11 (2025 release) gives examples of the resulting personalization: showing content for that person, playing news, turning on lights or adjusting the temperature through a routine.
Recognition is tied to the enrolled profiles and supported settings. A device that has not been configured for Visual ID should not be assumed to identify everyone who walks past it.
Presence detection does not identify a person
Presence detection answers a narrower question: is someone nearby? It can operate without determining who that person is. Depending on the device, Amazon says presence sensing may use the camera, ultrasound, or ultrasound combined with Wi-Fi signals. This distinction is useful when evaluating a routine: a trigger based on presence can react to someone approaching without having a named person profile.
How Adaptive Content changes the Echo Show screen
Adaptive Content changes the information shown on supported Echo Show devices according to how far you are from the display. Amazon says some supported devices also use visual engagement, so content can be presented differently when you are looking toward the screen. The setting is optional and turned on by default.

Amazon lists support for these models:

- Echo Show 10 (2nd generation)
- Echo Show 11 (2025 release)
- Echo Show 15 (1st and 2nd generation)

Adaptive Content is a display-personalization feature, not a general surveillance mode. Amazon says the images used for Adaptive Content are processed on the device and never sent to the cloud. That statement applies to Adaptive Content; it should not be extended automatically to every feature that uses the camera.
Video calls, Live View and Home Monitoring
Video calls
The camera and screen support two-way video calls on compatible Echo devices. Turning off the camera prevents camera-dependent video functions, even if voice interaction remains available on a model that offers a camera-only switch.
Live View
Live View lets household members check a compatible Echo device’s live camera feed through the Alexa app when the required settings are enabled. Because this is a live remote feed, it is different from on-device Adaptive Content processing. Amazon says visual indicators appear when camera images or video are streaming to the cloud; certain Echo Show models display a green camera icon and green light bar.
Home Monitoring
Amazon’s Home Monitoring help documentation describes enabling remote viewing of a compatible Echo Show and setting routines triggered by nearby-person detection. For Home Monitoring presence detection, Amazon says processing occurs on the Echo Show and that no video or images are sent to the cloud. Remote camera viewing and local presence processing are therefore separate behaviors with different data paths.

What the camera indicators and privacy controls mean
On the Echo Show 8 (2025 release) and Echo Show 11 (2025 release), Amazon documents camera controls in Settings > Privacy & Permissions > Camera Access. The Alexa app also provides a camera control for these models. A camera-disabled indicator appears on the Echo Show when access is turned off.
Disable only the camera when your model allows it
- Open the Echo Show’s settings.
- Go to Privacy & Permissions, then Camera Access.
- Turn camera access off. On models with a physical shutter, closing it also prevents camera-based features from working.
- Check the on-screen disabled indicator before relying on the camera being unavailable.
Amazon says disabling the camera, closing the shutter or using the combined camera-and-microphone switch prevents Adaptive Content from working. On the Echo Show 8 (2025 release) and Echo Show 11 (2025 release), turning off the camera also disables Live View. Other camera-dependent functions, including video calls and visual recognition, are likewise unavailable while the camera cannot provide an image.
Use the combined microphone-and-camera button
The physical combined control turns off both microphones and the camera. This is a stronger privacy action than a camera-only setting because voice interaction is disabled as well. The Alexa FAQ notes that some Echo devices support turning off the camera while retaining voice interaction; model-specific controls determine which option you have.
What happens to images and event data
There is no single cloud rule for every camera feature. Amazon identifies several distinct cases:
Best Value
- Powerfully smart, beautifully built: The redesigned 8.7" smart display features a vibrant HD touchscreen with 15% more viewing area versus Echo Show 8 (2023 release), built-in smart home hub, AZ3 Pro chip for powerful performance, and Omnisense technology for highly personalized experiences.

- Crystal-clear video calls: Video calls feel natural with a centered, auto-framing camera, 3.3x zoom, and noise reduction technology. Use live view to check in on your family, pets, and more while you're away.
- Visual indicators: the device shows indicators when camera images or video stream to the cloud. Certain Echo Show models use a green camera icon and green light bar.
- Adaptive Content: Amazon says its images are processed on-device and never sent to the cloud.
- Home Monitoring presence detection: Amazon says presence processing happens on the Echo Show and sends no video or images to the cloud.
- Other camera-detected events: Amazon separately says certain event data is sent to the cloud for service provision and personalization.
These statements describe particular features, not a universal promise about all camera activity, retention or privacy performance. Review the controls for the exact model and feature you intend to use.
Model, setting and feature limits
Camera behavior is not identical across the Echo range. Before relying on a feature, check all three requirements:
- Compatible hardware: the Echo must have a camera and support the named feature.
- Feature configuration: Visual ID requires enrolled household members; Live View and Home Monitoring require their respective settings to be enabled.
- Camera state: a disabled camera or closed shutter blocks features that need visual input.
The current camera-control documentation specifically covers the Echo Show 8 (2025 release) and Echo Show 11 (2025 release). A setting or indicator on another model may use different labels or provide fewer controls, so do not assume that a control path is universal.

Can Alexa see your computer or phone screen?
Nothing in Amazon’s documented Echo camera features establishes screen sharing from a separate computer or phone. The Echo Show camera can look outward at objects and surroundings in front of the device, while its own display shows Alexa’s response. To let Alexa analyze content from another screen, you would need a separately documented integration that deliberately sends that content; the camera features described here do not provide one.
Consequently, placing a laptop in front of an Echo Show is not the same as granting Alexa direct access to the laptop. At most, you would be making the laptop part of the Echo camera’s physical view and asking for an on-demand visual response, subject to the model and feature limitations above.
Practical privacy checklist
- Identify whether you need an on-demand visual answer, person personalization, proximity detection, a video call or remote viewing.
- Check the exact Echo model and release, especially for the 2025 Echo Show 8 and Echo Show 11 camera controls.
- Turn off Camera Access or close the shutter when camera functions are not needed.
- Use the combined microphone-and-camera button when you also want voice input disabled.
- Watch for the camera-disabled indicator and the green camera icon or light bar associated with streaming.
- Do not treat Adaptive Content’s on-device processing statement as a guarantee covering every camera feature.
- Review and remove Visual ID enrollment if you no longer want personalized recognition or routines.
The practical answer
Alexa can see through a compatible Echo Show’s camera in narrowly defined ways: it can respond when you ask about an object or your surroundings, identify an item with Show and Tell, recognize enrolled household members through Visual ID, detect anonymous proximity, adapt the display, support video calls and provide an enabled Live View feed. The Echo Show screen is the output surface for those interactions, not a gateway to your other devices’ screens. Camera controls, processing and cloud behavior vary by model and feature, so use the specific settings and indicators on your Echo Show rather than assuming that every visual function works the same way.
