AI shopping assistants can see what you type or upload and, when you grant access, additional context such as a shared webpage, browser details, connected apps, account history, saved preferences, device signals, or location. The exact visibility depends on the assistant, your account, region, settings, and the feature you are using. No single assistant automatically sees every site you visit or every purchase you have made.
The important distinction is between what the assistant can access for a response and what its provider may retain, review, or use to improve the service. Those are related but separate questions, and each provider documents them differently.
The short answer: access is layered, not universal
An AI shopping assistant starts with the current interaction. If you ask it to compare two products, it can process the text of your request and any files, images, screenshots, or links you provide. Some assistants can also read a page or screen when you explicitly share that context. Extra visibility is usually conditional on a connection, permission, account setting, or feature.

That means the useful question is not simply “Can AI see my data?” Ask instead:

- What account history, memory, or saved preferences can this service use?
- Which apps, browser pages, screens, or devices are connected?
- What does the provider retain, review, or use for improvement?
- Which controls remove access, limit future use, or delete stored activity?
What an assistant can see in the current interaction
Your prompt and anything you attach
The most direct input is the message you send. Gemini’s privacy notice says users can provide files, images, imported chats, and other content in addition to ordinary text. A product photo, a screenshot of a retailer page, a pasted order number, or a spreadsheet of prices therefore becomes part of the information the assistant can process for that interaction.
Do not assume that an image is “just visual.” A screenshot may contain your name, delivery address, account number, loyalty balance, or a full URL. Crop or redact those details before uploading when they are not needed for the shopping question.
Live audio and conversations
Gemini describes transcripts and recordings for Gemini Live interactions. If you use a live voice mode to discuss a purchase, the relevant audio and transcript handling can differ from a typed chat. Check the service’s current notice for the particular Live feature and account you use rather than applying text-chat assumptions to voice sessions.

A webpage, screen, or browser context you deliberately share
An assistant may be able to interpret a page you open in an integrated browser, a tab you send to it, or a screen you share. Gemini’s notice refers to Chrome page context and URL in some experiences, as well as screen and remote-browser data. This is more specific than general “internet access”: it means the feature may receive the page content or address associated with the context you permitted.
Sharing a page can reveal more than the product listing. A retailer URL can include search terms, campaign identifiers, a store location, or account-specific information. Review the page and address before sharing, especially when you are signed in.

Context that can extend beyond one prompt
Connected apps and other services
Gemini’s disclosure lists information from connected apps and other Google services. Examples include Search or YouTube history and Chrome page context. Those categories are available only where the relevant connection, setting, and feature make them available; the notice does not mean every Gemini user or every mode has all of them enabled.
Google also says Search, Maps, and Shopping activity may be saved to Search Services History, while some activity from other Google services may be saved to Web & App Activity depending on your settings. An assistant could use such history when a feature is designed and authorized to do so, but changing one assistant setting does not automatically change every account-level Google history setting.

Retail assistants can use a shopping account’s previous activity more directly than a general-purpose chatbot. Amazon says Rufus can connect a current need with past Amazon shopping activity, answer questions about what shopping information it remembers, and help add products to a cart for checkout later. Its stated purpose includes product discovery, recommendations, comparisons, and taking shopping actions.
Past activity may include products you bought, viewed, or discussed within the retailer’s ecosystem, but the exact categories available to a user depend on the account and feature. A recommendation based on remembered preferences is not proof that the assistant can see your entire web history or purchases from other retailers.
Device permissions and location
Some Gemini experiences describe device, app, permission, screen, and remote-browser data. Location can also be relevant when a feature is designed to answer questions about nearby availability or delivery. The presence of a permission in a privacy notice does not establish that it is active for every user. Check the permission state on your device and inside the assistant’s settings.

How shopping assistants turn that data into answers and actions
Understanding the immediate goal
The assistant first interprets the task: find a compatible charger, compare two air purifiers, identify a replacement part, or explain whether a product meets a dietary requirement. Your stated constraints—budget, size, location, deadline, or intended use—are the strongest signals because you supplied them for that request.

If the feature has access to a shared page, connected app, account history, or saved preference, it may combine that context with the current question. For example, a retailer assistant may use previous shopping activity to tailor recommendations, while a page-aware assistant may extract specifications from the product page you shared.
Personalizing recommendations
Personalization can change the order of results, the attributes emphasized, or the products suggested. Amazon describes Rufus as an assistant that can know a shopper and the shopper’s preferences, help discover and compare products and prices, and support buying decisions. Personalization does not guarantee that the cheapest, highest-rated, or most suitable product will appear first; it means the service is using additional signals to shape the response.
Taking an action
Some retail assistants can move beyond advice. Amazon says Rufus can add products to a cart for later checkout. A cart action is not the same as completing a purchase: review the item, seller, quantity, shipping address, delivery date, and total before placing an order.
Assistant visibility is different from provider data use
There are two separate data paths:
- Operational access: information supplied or made available so the assistant can answer, personalize, or perform an enabled action.
- Provider handling: storage, safety checks, human review, personalization systems, and model-improvement practices applied under the provider’s policies and your account settings.
Google says Gemini activity can be used to provide, maintain, improve, personalize, and customize Gemini Apps, and that some collected data may be reviewed by human reviewers. OpenAI says consumer content may be used to improve model performance depending on settings and account type. These are provider-specific disclosures; one service’s practice cannot be assumed for another.

Retention: the numbers are service-specific
Retention periods are not industry-wide promises. They apply to particular products, data categories, and settings.

Amazon’s cited Rufus description explains how shopping activity can inform the assistant but does not establish a universal retention period for every Rufus data category. Do not infer one from the Gemini or OpenAI timelines.
Controls that actually reduce exposure
Review the assistant’s own settings
- Open the assistant’s settings or privacy dashboard.
- Check connected apps and revoke integrations you do not need.
- Inspect browser, page-sharing, screen-sharing, microphone, and location permissions.
- Review activity or history controls and select the shortest auto-delete period that fits your needs.
- Check memory or saved-preference entries and remove details that are outdated or overly sensitive.
- Review model-improvement or training controls where the service offers them.
- Use the service’s deletion tools for individual chats or all eligible activity.
Google and Gemini: check both layers
Google says changing Gemini settings does not change other Google settings, and deleting Gemini activity does not delete data saved in other Google services. Review Gemini’s connected-app and activity controls, then inspect account-level Search Services History and Web & App Activity settings. If you use Chrome page context or a device permission, check those separately as well.
OpenAI consumer services: match the control to the data
OpenAI documents Data Controls, Memory settings, Temporary Chat, and deletion controls. Which options appear depends on your plan, account type, and workspace settings. Turning off one feature does not necessarily erase information already stored elsewhere, so use the deletion control that corresponds to the conversation, memory, or account record you want removed.

Sometimes, but not by default in every product. A service may receive a page you share, browser context from an integrated experience, or history from a connected account. Gemini’s notice specifically describes Chrome page context and URL and references Search or YouTube history in connected-service contexts. That is evidence of possible access in those configurations, not proof that Gemini continuously sees every page you visit.

Amazon’s Rufus example is narrower and retail-focused: it can connect a shopping question with past Amazon shopping activity. That does not establish access to browsing outside Amazon. Likewise, a general-purpose service helping you compare products does not automatically gain access to your retailer accounts unless you connect or provide them.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming one deletion clears everything: deleting a Gemini activity record does not remove data held in another Google service; clearing a chat is also different from deleting saved memory or account history.
- Sharing a full account page: send a cropped screenshot or copy only the specifications needed for comparison.
- Confusing a recommendation with a purchase: confirm seller, price, shipping, taxes, quantity, and return terms before checkout.
- Treating private browsing as a universal privacy switch: the cited policies do not support a blanket claim that private browsing disables account-level history or connected-service data.
- Assuming hardware determines access: a physical accessory or microphone does not by itself explain what the provider receives; feature permissions and account settings do.
- Using retired products as current examples: OpenAI’s Help Center says ChatGPT Atlas has been retired, and Atlas browser data and ChatGPT conversations are separate.
A practical privacy checklist for shopping sessions
Before asking an assistant to research a purchase, decide how much context is necessary:
- Use a generic description instead of your name, order number, or full address.
- Remove loyalty IDs, payment details, health information, and private messages from screenshots.
- Share only the product page or text needed for the comparison.
- Turn off connected apps, browser context, screen sharing, or location when the task does not require them.
- Ask what shopping information the retailer assistant remembers when that feature is available.
- After the task, delete the chat or memory entry if you do not want it retained under the service’s policy.
- For work or family accounts, verify whether an administrator controls retention or model-improvement settings.
How to choose a safer workflow
For a one-time comparison
Use a fresh chat, provide product names or redacted specifications, and avoid connecting accounts. This supplies enough information for a side-by-side explanation without adding purchase history.

For recurring recommendations
Saved preferences can make results more useful, but record only durable preferences such as shoe size, preferred operating system, or maximum budget. Revisit memory entries periodically and remove anything that could create a privacy or safety risk.
For retailer-specific purchasing
A retail assistant may be convenient when it can use your shopping history or place items in a cart. Treat that convenience as an account-data trade-off: verify what it remembers, limit connected permissions, and inspect every checkout detail before confirming.
Bottom line
AI shopping assistants can see the information you provide and, when enabled, selected context from pages, browsers, connected apps, account history, saved preferences, devices, and location. They do not all have the same visibility. A retailer assistant may use past purchases inside its own account, while a general assistant may rely on a shared page or connected service.
Protecting your information requires two checks: limit what the assistant can access, and separately review what the provider stores, reviews, uses for personalization, or uses to improve models. The most reliable privacy practice is to inspect permissions, history, memory, improvement, and deletion controls for the exact service and account you are using.
