AI can help security teams analyze large volumes of logs and behavior data, flag possible threats, identify code vulnerabilities, and speed parts of incident response. It cannot guarantee that a threat will be found, that an alert is correct, or that an automated response is safe. The most defensible use is as an aid to people: define a specific task, test the system with relevant data, limit its permissions, and keep monitoring its performance.

What AI can do in a cyber defense program

AI is most useful where defenders need to sift through more data than people can review manually or apply consistent analysis across many events. It can help surface patterns and prepare work for analysts, but it does not replace the controls, judgment, and response procedures of a security program.

Analyze logs and user or system behavior

AI-enhanced tools may analyze logs and look for activity that warrants investigation. They may also help identify unusual user or system behavior. NIST’s National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) described these as potential uses in a working session held August 19, 2025. The description is not a comparative test showing that every tool detects threats faster or more accurately. NIST NCCoE’s working-session overview also identifies the challenge of assessing whether such capabilities work effectively.

Help find vulnerabilities in source code

NIST’s December 2025 initial preliminary draft of its Cybersecurity Framework Profile for Artificial Intelligence lists source-code vulnerability detection among possible applications. A tool may help developers or security teams find code that merits review; its output still needs verification and should not be treated as proof that code is either safe or vulnerable.

Support incident response and recovery

AI may assist with incident-response playbooks, automate selected response tasks, and support recovery. It can also help triage security help-desk requests and prepare reports. NIST’s draft says AI can augment human analysts, improve detection and response time, and support recovery, while warning that organizations need to assess whether a capability is mature enough for their needs. These are potential benefits in a preliminary draft, not guaranteed results from a particular product. Read NIST IR 8596, the initial preliminary draft.

At the policy level, a June 2025 White House executive order describes AI’s potential to identify vulnerabilities rapidly, scale threat detection, and automate cyber defense. That language expresses policy intent and opportunity; it is not evidence that stated outcomes have been implemented or measured across security programs. Read the executive order.

These applications cover different kinds of work, so “AI for cyber defense” is not one interchangeable capability. Log analysis, source-code review, help-desk triage, and response automation depend on different inputs and involve different consequences if the system is wrong. Define the intended task narrowly before deciding whether a tool is useful. A system that prepares a report, for example, should be evaluated differently from one that can change a system configuration.

What AI cannot promise

An AI feature does not, by itself, establish that a program is more secure. NIST NCCoE’s August 2025 working-session material identifies several practical risks that security teams should account for:

  • False positives: The system may flag benign activity, consuming analyst time and potentially prompting unnecessary action.
  • False negatives: It may fail to identify real malicious activity, leaving a threat undetected.
  • Weak performance on new threats: A team that over-relies on familiar AI detections may be less prepared when attackers use techniques the system has not handled well.
  • Poor fit to local conditions: A tool may not adapt well to an organization’s needs or to the data it actually receives.

NIST NCCoE also noted that widely recognized benchmarks for measuring the effectiveness of AI in cybersecurity tools did not yet exist in its August 2025 material. That makes vendor claims such as “faster,” “autonomous,” or “AI-powered” insufficient evidence on their own. Ask for evaluation results relevant to your environment, including how the system handles false alarms, missed detections, and unfamiliar activity. NIST’s working-session overview discusses both the measurement challenge and the need to assess efficacy.

The benchmark gap does not mean a team cannot evaluate a tool. It means a headline score may not answer whether the capability suits your data, threat conditions, or workflow. Ask what was tested, under what conditions, and whether the examples resemble the activity your team needs to detect. Keep track of both errors and useful findings in a controlled trial, and revisit the assessment as the system or environment changes. NIST’s guidance points toward recognizing and assessing efficacy, rather than assuming a general claim transfers to every organization.

AI changes the threat environment, too

Defenders are not the only ones who can use AI. NIST’s December 2025 initial preliminary draft describes risks from AI-enabled attacks, including faster vulnerability discovery and movement along attack paths, as well as data exfiltration or tampering. It also discusses the potential for AI to improve the capabilities of less sophisticated attackers and to produce more convincing, tailored spear-phishing, including risks involving manipulated audio or video.

These are risks described in a preliminary profile, not quantified incident rates or predictions about how often any particular attack will occur. The operational point is that attacks may become faster, more scalable, or more adaptive, which can make ordinary response timelines harder to rely on. Treat AI as one part of a changing threat landscape, not as a defensive advantage available only to your organization.

That two-sided picture matters when setting expectations. AI assistance on the defensive side does not cancel out attackers’ possible use of the same broad technology. Continue to plan for phishing, vulnerabilities, data compromise, and other threats using the security processes appropriate to your organization; do not assume an AI-enabled defense automatically neutralizes AI-enabled attacks.

Put limits around AI agents and automated actions

An AI agent that can take actions creates a different risk from a system that only summarizes information or recommends a response. CISA and partner agencies from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States warned on May 1, 2026, about agentic AI risks including privilege escalation, emergent behavior, and gaps in accountability. Their guidance announcement recommends risk management aligned with existing frameworks and safeguards such as:

  • Limit the agent’s autonomy and access, especially around sensitive data and critical systems.
  • Use layered defenses and strong identity management so an agent’s credentials do not give it unnecessary reach.
  • Provide oversight, with clear responsibility for approving, reviewing, and documenting actions.
  • Threat-model the agent and its integrations, monitor its behavior continuously, and conduct regular security assessments.

In practice, match permissions to the task. A tool intended to summarize alerts should not receive authority to make unrelated changes in production systems. Where an agent can change accounts, configurations, or data, decide in advance what it may do independently, what requires human approval, and how to stop or reverse an action. These are risk-control questions, not claims that any one deployment method eliminates agentic risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also consider the full route an agent can take through connected services, not just its stated purpose. Access limits, identity controls, and layered defenses reduce the chance that a task-oriented agent has a path to sensitive data or critical systems it does not need. Oversight should have a named owner and a practical way to examine what happened, since CISA and its partners specifically identify accountability gaps as a concern.

How to evaluate an AI cyber defense capability

Assess the actual task and operating conditions, rather than the presence of an AI label. NIST frames its Cybersecurity AI Profile as a way to identify AI-related considerations in cybersecurity risk management; its December 2025 document is an initial preliminary draft, not a final standard. The following questions turn the risks identified by NIST and CISA into a practical evaluation.

1. Define the task and the data

Write down what the system is supposed to do: for example, analyze a particular set of logs, flag unusual account activity, review source code, or triage help-desk requests. Confirm which data sources it can actually access and whether those data are representative, current, and suitable for the task. A capability that works on one kind of data may not fit another organization’s systems or workflows.

2. Test detection quality in your environment

Before relying on alerts, evaluate false positives and false negatives using relevant data and cases. Ask how performance is assessed when activity is new or unfamiliar, and request evidence that makes the evaluation conditions clear. Because NIST NCCoE reported no widely recognized effectiveness benchmark in its August 2025 material, avoid treating a single headline score or a generic product claim as a universal measure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Decide what the system is allowed to do

Distinguish among a system that reports findings, one that recommends actions, and one that executes them. Set approval requirements and access boundaries before deployment. The more consequential the action, the more important it is to constrain permissions and provide a clear human oversight path, consistent with CISA and partner agencies’ recommendations on agentic AI.

4. Make actions reviewable and accountable

Analysts should be able to inspect a recommendation, override it where appropriate, and determine what the system did. Assign responsibility for reviewing outcomes and documenting decisions. If an automated action causes disruption, the organization needs a defined route to investigate and respond rather than a gap in accountability.

5. Monitor and reassess

Evaluate the AI capability as part of the security program over time. Review whether its data, task, and permissions still fit, monitor errors and behavior, and reassess maturity and risks when the environment or threat changes. NIST’s draft emphasizes continuous evaluation of capability maturity and risks introduced by AI in defensive processes.

Compare capabilities on practical criteria

If comparing two or more programs, look beyond whether each has an “AI” label. Compare the data each can actually analyze, including logs, endpoints, identities, cloud services, or code sources, and whether those data are current and representative. Then compare what evidence each provider offers about false positives, false negatives, and performance on unfamiliar threats. Given the benchmark gap NIST NCCoE described, ask for the test conditions and their relevance to your environment instead of relying on an unsupported universal ranking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare response authority as well: does the system report, recommend, or act automatically, and what limits apply to its access and autonomy? Ask whether analysts can inspect and override recommendations, whether actions can be documented, and how the organization will monitor the tool and respond to errors or compromised components. These are practical questions derived from NIST and CISA guidance, not a published scoring standard or a product ranking.

These questions are a practical evaluation framework derived from the cited guidance, not a published scoring standard. No single feature name or claim can substitute for evidence about the particular task, data, and authority involved.

Where AI fits in a sound defense

NIST’s broader cybersecurity and AI program describes AI as something that may augment defensive capabilities, while also emphasizing the need to adapt defense to AI-enabled offensive techniques and protect AI systems and their components. NIST’s Cybersecurity, Privacy, and AI overview sets out that broader context.

For a security team, the useful distinction is between assistance and assurance. AI may help people process data, spot leads, or carry out bounded steps. The organization remains responsible for deciding whether the output is trustworthy, whether an action is appropriate, and whether the system itself is secure and properly controlled. Build those responsibilities into testing, permissions, oversight, and ongoing review rather than assuming the technology will supply them.

The NIST materials cited here also have different roles and dates: the NCCoE working-session overview describes a session held August 19, 2025, while NIST IR 8596 is an initial preliminary draft dated December 2025. The latter is not a final standard. The White House order describes policy direction, and the agency guidance offers risk-management recommendations; none should be mistaken for an independent product test or a guarantee of results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can AI cyber defense tools guarantee that threats will be detected?

No. NIST NCCoE identifies false positives, false negatives, weak performance on new threats, and poor fit to an organization’s data or needs as risks. Evaluate the tool with relevant data and cases rather than treating a general claim as proof.

How can I compare AI cyber defense programs?

Compare the task and data each tool can handle, evidence about false positives and false negatives, performance on unfamiliar activity, response authority, access limits, human oversight, and how the tool will be monitored. NIST NCCoE noted in August 2025 that widely recognized effectiveness benchmarks were not yet available, so these questions are not a published scoring standard.

Should an AI agent be allowed to take security actions automatically?

That depends on the task and the consequences of an error. CISA and partner agencies recommend limiting agent autonomy and access, especially for sensitive data and critical systems, and using oversight, identity controls, monitoring, threat modeling, and regular security assessments. Define in advance which actions require approval.

Does AI make cyberattacks more dangerous?

NIST’s December 2025 initial preliminary draft describes potential risks including faster vulnerability discovery, movement along attack paths, data exfiltration or tampering, and more convincing tailored spear-phishing or manipulated audio and video. These are risks described in a preliminary profile, not quantified incident rates.

The Bottom Line

AI can help defenders process security data, surface leads, and support bounded response work, but it cannot guarantee accurate detection or safe action. Define the task, test the capability against relevant data, constrain agent access and autonomy, and keep people responsible for reviewing outcomes. Treat vendor claims as claims to evaluate—not as proof of security improvement.
