AI coding tools can automate bounded software tasks—such as drafting and editing code, searching a repository, running approved commands, preparing a pull request, and summarizing changes. They cannot reliably take responsibility for product intent, architecture, security, verification, or release decisions. The practical rule is to delegate execution, not accountability: define a testable task, limit the tool’s context and permissions, inspect the entire change, run meaningful checks, and keep a human decision before merge or deployment.

What can AI coding tools automate?

The useful dividing line is not whether a tool is called an assistant or an agent. It is whether the work can be expressed as a bounded objective with observable acceptance criteria. A tool may complete several steps autonomously, but each step still depends on the repository, model, permissions, plan and development environment.

Generating and editing code

Assistants can propose functions, tests, queries, configuration, documentation and refactors from a prompt or from nearby code. More agentic systems can change several files while preserving a requested interface, update imports and modify tests together. They are most predictable when the request names the affected area, constraints and expected behavior.

For example, “add a parser for this documented format, reject malformed input with this error type, and add tests for these four cases” is bounded. “Improve the data layer” is not: it leaves the success condition and architectural scope undefined.

Using repository context and development tools

Configured agents can inspect a repository, locate references, read issue text, and use development tools. Depending on permissions, they may run a formatter, compiler, test suite, linter or other command, then revise the patch after seeing the output. Command execution is a safety boundary, not a minor convenience. A command can delete data, alter dependencies, expose secrets or make a network request, so execution should be restricted and visible.

Preparing a contribution

GitHub documents cloud-agent workflows that work on a selected repository and can produce a pull request. Its code-review feature can flag possible issues and suggest fixes. A suggested fix is an output to evaluate, not approval from a reviewer. A pull request created by an agent still needs a human to understand the complete diff, the surrounding behavior and the evidence from tests.

GitHub’s documented cloud-agent scope is narrow: one branch and one pull request per task, for a maximum session of 59 minutes. The repository must be hosted on GitHub and meet applicable rules. Large initiatives therefore need to be decomposed into focused tasks, with integration handled deliberately.

Automating repository routines

Documented examples include issue triage and preparing weekly release notes. These routines are useful when the inputs and output format are stable—for example, labeling new issues according to an agreed taxonomy or collecting merged changes into a draft. Eligibility, policy settings and available automation features vary by repository, so confirm the current product documentation before designing a workflow around them.

Summarizing and orienting people

An agent can summarize a pull request, explain where a symbol is used, or answer questions from the repository context it can access. Such summaries reduce the time needed to orient a reviewer. They do not establish that the implementation is correct, complete or safe; orientation and code review are different activities.

What remains unreliable or human-led?

Generated code can be syntactically valid yet semantically wrong, insecure or inconsistent with the product’s intent. An agent may misunderstand a dynamic interface, choose an unsafe command, expose sensitive context or optimize for a local test while violating an unstated requirement. Review systems can also report problems that are not real or miss problems that matter. Performance varies by language, framework, repository conventions and the quality of context supplied.

Understanding the goal and defining acceptance

A person must resolve ambiguity, identify missing requirements and decide what “done” means. Acceptance criteria should cover behavior, error handling, compatibility, performance expectations and documentation where relevant. If two reasonable engineers could implement the request differently, the task is not yet ready for unsupervised execution.

Architecture and trade-offs

Choosing service boundaries, data ownership, consistency guarantees, public interfaces and migration strategies requires product and operational judgment. An agent can outline alternatives or implement a selected design, but it does not own the consequences for maintenance, reliability, staffing or future change. Have an engineer make the design decision and record the constraints before delegating implementation.

Security, privacy and permissions

Humans must decide which files, credentials, logs and external systems an agent may access. Limit repository and command permissions to the minimum needed. Keep secrets out of prompts and generated artifacts, review dependency changes, and inspect code that handles authentication, authorization, payments, personal data, cryptography or untrusted input. GitHub’s responsible-use guidance specifically warns about inaccurate or insecure output, public-code matches, command execution and limitations in interpreting interfaces.

Verification and coverage

Running a green test suite is not the same as proving a change is correct. The author or reviewer must select tests that exercise the changed behavior, inspect failures, check static-analysis results and ask whether important cases are untested. GitHub’s documentation states: “Logs do not replace your own review and testing.” Treat command logs and agent summaries as evidence to examine, not as a substitute for examination.

Integration, merge and release

A human should review the complete patch, understand interactions with other work, resolve conflicts and decide whether to merge. Release decisions also include rollout sequencing, monitoring, rollback and communication. An agent can prepare artifacts for these steps, but accountability remains with the team that operates the software.

A safe workflow for delegating coding tasks

  1. Write a bounded request. State the goal, files or subsystem in scope, constraints, acceptance tests and explicitly out-of-scope work. Link the issue or specification available to the tool, and identify interfaces that must not change.
  2. Choose the minimum context. Provide the relevant repository, issue, API contract and coding conventions. Do not grant unrelated repositories, production data or credentials merely because the tool can read them.
  3. Set permission gates. Decide whether the agent may edit files, install dependencies, access the network or run commands. Require confirmation for destructive, privileged or externally visible operations.
  4. Ask for a plan before a patch when risk is material. For a database migration, security change or cross-service refactor, review the proposed files, assumptions and rollback approach before allowing implementation.
  5. Run targeted checks, then broader checks. Start with focused unit or integration tests and formatting. Follow with the repository’s full required suite, static analysis and build or packaging checks. Record the exact commands and results.
  6. Inspect the whole diff. Look for unintended files, generated artifacts, dependency or configuration changes, weakened validation, error-message leaks and changes outside the stated scope. Read the implementation, not only the summary.
  7. Test behavior the agent could not infer. Exercise boundary values, failure paths, permissions, concurrency, migrations and compatibility with existing clients. Add tests for any requirement that was previously implicit.
  8. Use a human merge decision. The reviewer should be able to explain what changed, why it satisfies the acceptance criteria and what evidence supports release. If that explanation is not possible, return the task for clarification or revision.

Which tasks fit automation best?

Task pattern Why it fits or fails Human control needed
Adding a function with specified inputs, outputs and tests Clear boundaries and observable behavior make errors easier to detect. Review edge cases and run the relevant suite.
Mechanical refactor across known files Consistent edits can be repeated quickly when the interface is fixed. Check every call site, generated diff and performance-sensitive path.
Writing tests for existing behavior Repository examples provide useful context and the output is inspectable. Confirm the tests assert meaningful behavior rather than merely increasing coverage.
Issue triage or release-note drafting Stable labels and templates make the output easy to review. Correct categorization, omissions and confidential information.
New architecture or cross-system redesign Requirements, trade-offs and long-term effects are difficult to encode in a short task. Human design decision, documented rationale and staged implementation.
Security-sensitive or destructive operation Failure costs are high and safe behavior depends on context the tool may not have. Restricted permissions, independent review and explicit approval.
“Fix everything” or vague improvement requests There is no reliable stopping condition, so scope can expand or drift. Break into separately testable tasks with acceptance criteria.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Can coding with AI slow you down?

Yes. The result depends on task difficulty, repository familiarity, tool setup, developer experience and how much review and rework the output requires. Counting generated lines, completed prompts or pull requests does not measure end-to-end delivery.

A 2025 METR study, reported by TIME, observed 16 experienced developers working on complex software projects. Participants estimated that AI made them 20% faster, while measured completion was about 20% slower. The authors cautioned against broad generalization because the participants and task setting were specific. The result is a warning to measure actual elapsed time, not a forecast for every team or tool.

DORA’s 2025 report analyzed survey responses from nearly 5,000 technology professionals worldwide and more than 100 hours of qualitative data. Its central framing is that “AI’s primary role in software development is that of an amplifier.” That means strong testing, clear ownership and good delivery practices can be amplified, while unclear requirements and weak review can also be amplified.

Adoption data shows why pull-request counts are insufficient. Raida and Hou analyzed 25,264 agentic pull requests from 2,361 popular GitHub repositories using data from May through July 2025. The median repository produced one to two agentic pull requests during the three-month period, and 78.9% of those pull requests had one developer both review and commit changes involving the agent. The authors describe this as an early snapshot limited to popular open-source projects; pull-request counts do not reveal size, complexity, quality or review effort.

For an internal evaluation, compare similar tasks with and without the tool. Include prompting, waiting, debugging, review, integration and rollback time, and keep quality criteria constant. Track escaped defects, security findings, rework and lead time alongside output volume.

How to choose an AI coding tool for a workflow

The evidence does not establish a universal best product. Compare a tool against the work and controls your team actually needs:

Comparison axis Questions to ask
Task scope Does it provide inline completion and chat only, or can it make multi-file changes, open pull requests and run scheduled routines?
Context and integrations Which repositories, IDEs, issue trackers and development tools can it access? Can you exclude sensitive paths?
Permission controls Are read/write scope, command execution, network access, secret handling, approval gates and audit logs configurable?
Verification workflow Can it run the required tests, show the exact diff and preserve logs without implying that logs are approval?
Operational constraints What session duration, branch or repository limits, policy eligibility, plan access and usage costs apply?
Codebase fit Does it handle your languages and conventions, and can it obtain enough high-quality context to make safe changes?

Common failure modes and practical safeguards

  • Confidently wrong implementation: require acceptance tests and inspect semantics, not just compilation.
  • Scope drift: define allowed files and reject unrelated cleanup in the same patch.
  • Unsafe command: use a sandbox or approval gate, especially for deletion, migration and network operations.
  • Secret or private-data exposure: minimize context, mask credentials and review prompts, logs and generated files.
  • Hallucinated review finding: reproduce the issue and distinguish a suggestion from a confirmed defect.
  • False confidence from passing tests: add negative, boundary and integration checks that target the requirement.
  • Unreviewed dependency or configuration change: examine lockfiles, licenses, versions, permissions and deployment behavior.
  • Single-person approval loop: for high-risk changes, require an independent reviewer rather than letting the same person generate, review and merge.

The operating principle

Use AI coding tools as controlled execution capacity. Give them work that has a clear boundary, supply only the context they need, and make every command and file change inspectable. Keep people responsible for intent, design, security, evidence and release. The outcome to measure is reliable software delivered end to end—not the amount of code an agent can produce in isolation.
