AI is useful in mathematics, but it is not an automatic source of truth. It can calculate, explain, suggest strategies, draft proofs and, in tightly controlled settings, solve very difficult competition problems. It can also make a single invalid inference, misread a condition or present a false proof in convincing language. Use it to generate and explore solutions; independently check every important calculation and logical step.
What can AI do in mathematics?
“AI” covers several different capabilities rather than one general mathematical skill. A model that gives a correct answer to a short equation is performing a different task from a system that searches for a multi-step Olympiad solution, writes a proof in a formal language or proposes a new research idea. The appropriate confidence and checking method change with the task.
| Task | What an AI system may do well | What you still need to check |
|---|---|---|
| Short, constrained question | Produce a numerical answer, algebraic manipulation or definition quickly | Transcription, arithmetic, units, signs and the assumptions behind the answer |
| Multi-step problem | Suggest a route, identify a theorem, test small cases and write a possible derivation | Every inference, omitted case, theorem hypothesis and intermediate calculation |
| Formal proof | Generate code or proof text that a proof assistant can check, when the statement and libraries are supported | Whether the formal statement matches the intended theorem and whether the checker covers the whole claim |
| Open-ended mathematical research | Brainstorm definitions, lemmas, examples and alternative formulations for an expert to assess | Novelty, correctness, relevance, hidden assumptions and whether the idea actually advances the problem |
Calculation and symbolic manipulation
For a well-specified expression, AI can expand, factor, differentiate, integrate or estimate a result. It is most useful when you ask for the assumptions and an intermediate check, then recompute the result independently. A fluent explanation does not itself show that the arithmetic is right.

Strategy generation
AI can propose substitutions, invariants, induction schemes, geometric constructions or candidate lemmas. This is a form of search and brainstorming, not a guarantee that the suggested idea is new or valid. Asking for several approaches and the conditions under which each might work can make the output easier to evaluate.

Proof drafting and formalization
A system may turn an informal argument into a proof assistant’s language or produce a draft for a human mathematician. Formalization is valuable because a compatible checker can reject an invalid proof. It does not remove the need to confirm that the formal statement represents the original problem and that no condition was accidentally weakened.
Can AI solve math problems correctly?
Sometimes, especially when the problem has a clearly checkable answer or when an independent checker is available. Correctness is not uniform across problem types. A final number may be right even though the explanation contains a false step, and a plausible-looking derivation may end with the wrong answer.
- Higher confidence: a short calculation that you can substitute back into the original equation, or a proof accepted by a correctly specified formal checker.
- Moderate confidence: a longer solution whose assumptions, cases and computations have been independently inspected.
- Low confidence without expert review: an open-ended proof, a result in a niche area, or a claim of a new theorem based only on the model’s narrative.
OpenAI’s 2025 evaluation of GPT-5.2 reported 77% on its FrontierScience-Olympiad track and 25% on its FrontierScience-Research track. Those are different tests: the latter uses open-ended subtasks assessed with a rubric. The report also records reasoning, logic, calculation, factual and niche-concept errors. The scores therefore cannot be read as a general “mathematics accuracy” percentage.

International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) results provide demanding but bounded evidence. They show what a particular system did under a particular workflow, not how reliably every AI system handles mathematics.
| Report | Reported result | Conditions and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Google DeepMind, July 2024 | AlphaProof and AlphaGeometry 2 scored 28 of 42 points, equivalent to the top end of the silver-medal range, and solved four of six problems. | Problems were manually translated into formal mathematical language. Some solutions took up to three days. Two combinatorics problems remained unsolved. |
| Google DeepMind, 2025 IMO report | An advanced Gemini Deep Think version scored 35 of 42 points, a gold-medal-level result, by solving five of six problems. | IMO coordinators graded and certified the submitted solutions using student-solution criteria. Google DeepMind explicitly said this review did not validate the model, its processes or the underlying system. |
| Google DeepMind benchmark table, labeled February 2026 | Gemini 3.1 Deep Think: 81.5% on the displayed IMO 2025 row; GPT-5.2 Thinking: 71.4%. | This is a benchmark display, not the separately reported official competition result. The page does not establish identical conditions between the entries. |
The 2024 and 2025 reports are therefore not a simple trend line. They used different systems, interfaces, human preparation and time budgets. Google DeepMind’s 2024 teams wrote that “current AI systems still struggle with solving general math problems because of limitations in reasoning skills and training data.” The competition scores demonstrate impressive performance on selected tasks while leaving that broader limitation intact.
Can AI prove a theorem?
Formal proofs: what a checker establishes
A formal proof is expressed in a proof assistant’s language and accepted only when the assistant verifies each required rule. Google DeepMind’s 2024 account describes manually translating IMO problems into formal mathematical language and says AlphaProof proved the answers it solved. In this setting, the checker supplies strong evidence for the formal statement that was entered.

That evidence has boundaries. A checker does not decide whether the formal statement captured the informal question, whether definitions were appropriate for the intended audience or whether a modeling choice silently changed the problem. Those are human interpretation tasks.
Informal proof text: why appearance is not enough
Natural-language proof attempts can contain an unnoticed quantifier change, an unproved existence claim, division by zero, an unhandled boundary case or a theorem applied outside its hypotheses. The prose can remain clear and persuasive while the argument is invalid.
OpenAI’s First Proof account (February 20, 2026) illustrates the problem. The team initially considered one attempt likely correct, then judged it incorrect after official commentary and community analysis. The account describes retries, feedback and selection among attempts, and acknowledges that the process was not a clean, controlled evaluation. It says the problems “require building end-to-end arguments in specialized domains, and correctness is hard to establish without expert review.”
What AI cannot reliably do yet
Guarantee a correct chain of reasoning
Language generation optimizes for a plausible continuation, not for a universal mathematical certificate. A correct conclusion can be reached by faulty reasoning, and a minor algebraic error can invalidate a long argument.
Handle every edge case automatically
Models may silently assume that a variable is positive, an expression is defined, a function is continuous or a graph is finite. They can overlook equality cases, degenerate geometries, empty sets, repeated roots or a change in domain. Ask the system to list assumptions explicitly, then test the cases that assumptions exclude.
Turn benchmark scores into general ability
A score depends on the model version, reasoning mode, tools, time or compute budget, whether questions were held out, human intervention and the grading method. A result on a small or specialized set does not establish reliability across school mathematics, university mathematics and research.

Establish a new research result by assertion
In a September 21, 2026 announcement, OpenAI said an internal model had resolved more than 100 long-standing open problems. That is a company-reported claim, not independent confirmation supplied problem by problem. The announcement also says an independent advisory group was formed to advise on reviewing and communicating emerging mathematical results and notes community concerns about using open problems as AI benchmarks. Treat such statements as leads for expert examination, not as established theorems.
How to check an AI math answer
Use the following routine whenever an answer matters for a grade, decision, publication or research discussion.
- State the target. Tell the system whether you want a hint, a worked solution, a proof or a numerical check. Include definitions, assumptions, units, domain and the required level of rigor.
- Check the setup. Compare the model’s restatement with the original problem. Look for a changed sign, domain, quantifier, boundary condition, unit or optimization direction.
- Recompute independently. Substitute a claimed solution into the original equation. For a numerical result, use a hand calculation, a separate implementation or a small exact case. Test a boundary or limiting case where appropriate.
- Inspect each inference. Ask what justifies every arrow in the derivation. Confirm theorem hypotheses, independence assumptions, changes of variables, inequality directions and coverage of all cases.
- Use a suitable verifier. A computer algebra system can check many symbolic or numerical manipulations. A formal proof assistant can check a proof written in its supported language. Neither tool automatically validates an informal interpretation or a claim outside its input.
- Obtain human review for consequential work. An instructor can catch a pedagogical or interpretation error; a domain expert is needed for specialized or research-level claims.
- Keep provenance. Record the model name and version, date, prompts, tools, human edits and final verification. This makes later correction possible and distinguishes a generated draft from an independently established result.
How to prompt for a more checkable solution
The wording of a request cannot make a model infallible, but it can make errors easier to detect. Put the original statement in full and ask the system to restate it before solving. Require explicit domains, units and assumptions. Ask for a plan first, then the derivation, then a separate verification. For a proof, request a list of lemmas and the exact point at which each is used. For computation, request an estimate of the expected magnitude and a substitution check.
Ask the model to identify possible failure points rather than merely asserting confidence. Useful prompts include: “Which cases did you exclude?”, “What happens when the denominator is zero?”, “Can you verify this with a second method?” and “State the theorem hypotheses you are using.” If the answer changes after a retry, preserve both versions and investigate the disagreement instead of choosing the more polished one.
Why formalization helps—and where it can mislead
Formalization forces definitions, types and dependencies into the open. It can expose an omitted hypothesis that informal prose hides, and a proof assistant can reject an invalid inference even when the text sounds persuasive. This makes formal checking especially valuable for long arguments and reusable results.
Formalization also introduces a translation layer. The person encoding an informal problem must choose representations for objects, quantifiers and permitted operations. A proof can be completely valid for that encoded statement while failing to answer the intended question if the translation is wrong. The 2024 IMO workflow, which manually translated problems into formal mathematical language, is a concrete example of why human setup remains part of the evaluation.

A practical workflow for different users
Students learning a topic
Ask for a hint or a diagnosis before requesting a complete solution. After attempting the problem yourself, compare methods and ask the system to explain one step at a time. Re-solve the problem without looking at the response, then check your work against the original conditions. This uses AI as a tutor and source of alternative approaches without outsourcing understanding.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTeachers and instructors
Use AI to generate variant examples, anticipated misconceptions or multiple solution paths, then verify every answer before putting it in course material. For assessment, require intermediate reasoning, oral explanation or an independently checked derivation rather than accepting a polished final response as evidence of mastery.
Engineers and analysts
Keep units, tolerances and safety constraints explicit. Run generated formulas against known cases and an independent implementation, and preserve a review record. For a calculation that drives a physical, financial or safety decision, model output should be treated as a draft subject to the same sign-off process as human-authored work.
Mathematicians and researchers
Use AI to search for examples, suggest lemmas, translate notation or expose alternative formulations. Separate exploratory notes from established results. A proposed proof should be checked line by line by a qualified mathematician or formalized in a suitable proof assistant before being presented as correct.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are AI math benchmark scores reliable?
They can be reliable descriptions of a reported test if you preserve the test’s conditions, but they are not universal reliability ratings. Compare claims along these axes:
| Axis | Question to ask | Why it changes interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Task type | Is this a short answer, a multi-step proof, a formal theorem or a research subtask? | Different tasks demand different abilities and checks. |
| Verification method | Were answers exact-match checked, rubric graded, formally verified or reviewed by experts? | Each method establishes a different kind of correctness. |
| Freshness and contamination | Were problems held out or newly created, and could training data contain them? | Familiarity can inflate apparent performance. |
| Human intervention | Who translated the problem, supplied hints, requested retries or selected an attempt? | Assistance may be part of the measured system. |
| Time, compute and tools | Was the system operating under contest time, a multi-day search or tool access? | Operating conditions affect what the score represents. |
| Coverage | How many problems and which mathematical domains were tested? | A narrow sample cannot establish broad competence. |
| Independence | Is the result provider-reported, independently replicated or both? | Provider reports document what was claimed; independent evaluation adds another layer of confidence. |
When comparing the 28/42 AlphaProof result, the 35/42 Gemini result and the FrontierScience percentages, keep the task, workflow and verification method attached to each number. None is a percentage chance that an arbitrary future answer will be correct.

Common mistakes when using AI for mathematics
- Copying the prompt inaccurately: A missing minus sign, exponent, quantifier or unit changes the problem before any reasoning starts.
- Accepting an unexplained shortcut: “Clearly” can conceal a case split, an appeal to a theorem or an invalid cancellation.
- Checking only the final number: Substitution can confirm a candidate answer without confirming that the method works for every permitted input.
- Confusing repeated agreement with proof: Asking the same model to retry may produce the same error or a more confident version of it.
- Ignoring tool boundaries: A calculator checks arithmetic, not whether a variable was defined correctly; a proof assistant checks encoded syntax and rules, not the intent behind the encoding.
- Reporting a provider claim as an established fact: Keep the organization, date, score and evaluation conditions attached whenever you cite a result.
When should you trust an AI-generated solution?
- Trust provisionally: the answer is simple, the assumptions are visible and an independent substitution or recomputation agrees.
- Verify formally: the claim is a theorem, the proof is long or the result will be reused. Translate it into a supported formal system when practical.
- Require expert review: the problem is novel, domain-specific, safety-critical or presented as a research contribution.
- Do not treat fluency as evidence: clear prose, a high benchmark score or a confident statement cannot replace checking.
The most productive stance is neither “AI cannot do mathematics” nor “AI has solved mathematics.” It is a division of labor: let the system search, calculate and propose; let independent computation, formal checkers and qualified people decide whether the result holds.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can AI solve math problems correctly?
Yes, sometimes, particularly for constrained questions with an answer you can recompute or for formal statements checked by an appropriate proof assistant. Accuracy is not uniform, so verify the setup, calculations and reasoning instead of treating a fluent response as proof.
Can AI prove a theorem?
AI can draft informal proofs and generate formal proof code. A proof assistant can provide strong evidence for the exact formal statement it accepts, but a person must still check that the encoding matches the intended theorem and that definitions and hypotheses were chosen correctly.

Restate the problem and compare it with the original, list assumptions, recompute independently, test small or boundary cases, inspect every inference and confirm theorem hypotheses. Use computer algebra for computations, formal verification for supported proofs and expert review for specialized or consequential claims.
Are AI math benchmark scores reliable?
They can accurately describe a particular reported test, but they are not universal accuracy percentages. Check the task type, grading or verification method, freshness of problems, human intervention, time and tools, coverage and whether the result was independently evaluated.
What did the major IMO results actually demonstrate?
Google DeepMind reported 28 of 42 points for AlphaProof and AlphaGeometry 2 in 2024, with manual formalization and some solutions taking up to three days. It reported 35 of 42 for an advanced Gemini Deep Think version in 2025, graded by IMO coordinators. These are strong demonstrations under specified conditions, not guarantees for arbitrary mathematics.
Should students use AI for homework?
Use it for hints, alternative explanations and feedback after attempting the problem. Re-solve the work independently and verify each step. A polished answer should not substitute for understanding or for whatever evidence of reasoning an instructor requires.
Can an AI claim about an open problem be trusted?
Not without detailed mathematical and independent expert verification. OpenAI’s September 21, 2026 statement about more than 100 resolved problems is a company-reported claim; treat such announcements as leads for examination rather than established results.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: AI can calculate, search and draft mathematics, and some systems have achieved remarkable results on tightly defined competitions. It can still make subtle logical and computational errors. Use AI as a fast mathematical assistant, then verify the statement, every important step and the final result with independent computation, formal tools or qualified human review.
