Will AI agents take your job as a writer? The evidence does not support a yes-or-no prediction for an individual. My honest take, based on current labor data, is that AI is a real pressure on some writing work, but it does not show that writers as a group are about to disappear. In the United States, employment for writers and authors is projected to be nearly flat through 2035, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics explicitly expects AI to dampen demand. Globally, the International Labour Organization finds broad exposure to generative AI, but says work is more likely to be transformed than made redundant.
What the U.S. outlook says about writers
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects little or no employment change for writers and authors from 2025 to 2035. Its rounded estimate goes from 140,300 jobs in 2025 to 139,900 in 2035, a projected change of 0%. That is an occupation-wide forecast, not a guarantee that individual roles will remain unchanged.
The BLS also projects about 11,900 openings per year on average over that period, mostly because workers leave the occupation or need to be replaced—not because the field is expected to add that many net new jobs. It specifically says, “Increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) for writing is projected to dampen demand for these workers.” At the same time, the agency points to continued need in online media and advertising and support from reading for pleasure. The ILO’s 2025 refined index estimates that one in four workers worldwide are in occupations with some degree of generative AI exposure. It places 3.3% of global employment in its highest exposure category, Gradient 4. Neither figure means that those workers—or writers specifically—will lose their jobs. Exposure describes the potential for tasks to be affected; it does not establish adoption, displacement, or an individual’s odds of redundancy.

The ILO’s overall assessment is that most affected work is more likely to be transformed than made redundant, reflecting the continued need for human input. Its analysis is global and concerns occupational tasks, not a ten-year headcount forecast for writers. The ILO also notes that expanded voice, image, and video capabilities have raised automation scores for some media- and web-related tasks, but it does not attach a numerical employment effect for writers to that finding. Read the ILO’s refined global index.
Why these findings are not contradictory
| Question | BLS writers-and-authors outlook | ILO refined exposure index |
|---|---|---|
| Geography | United States | Global, with country-income differences |
| What it measures | Projected employment in a named occupation | Potential exposure of occupational tasks to generative AI |
| Time frame | 2025–2035 projection | 2025 index; not a ten-year employment forecast |
| AI-related conclusion | AI use for writing is expected to dampen demand | Across jobs overall, transformation is more likely than redundancy |
| What it cannot tell you | Whether a particular writer’s role will change or end | Whether exposure will lead to adoption, displacement, or a writer-specific outcome |
The sources answer different questions. A near-flat U.S. occupation forecast can coexist with substantial task-level change: some work may be reorganized or performed differently without the total occupation rapidly shrinking. Neither source establishes a universal forecast for every country, genre, or writing market.

Why a writing job is more than one task
Writers and authors may research facts and authentic details, decide what material belongs in a piece, draft content across media, and work with editors or clients. A job title bundles these activities together, while AI exposure is assessed at the task level. A broad occupation statistic therefore cannot say which parts of a particular writer’s work an employer or client will change.
That does not make any component automatically safe from automation. Research, judgment, interviewing, editing, and originality are parts of current writing work that should be assessed separately—not treated as proven protection against AI. The ILO’s task-based framing is useful for understanding possible change, but it does not quantify the risk for a specific writer.

What this means for your own writing work
There is no writing-specific probability of job loss in these sources, and it would be misleading to calculate one from the global exposure estimates. Your situation depends on your market, clients or employer, and the mix of tasks you perform; the cited data do not quantify those individual factors.
- Look at your actual workload: identify which assignments consist mainly of repeatable drafting and which depend on research, specialized knowledge, collaboration, or other distinct work.
- Build the ability to evaluate AI output, including checking facts, suitability, and fit for the intended reader. This is a practical response to changing tools, not a guarantee of continued employment.
- Keep developing subject knowledge and discuss changing expectations with clients or managers where relevant. These are sensible steps, not outcomes promised by either labor forecast.
For readers asking “Will AI replace writers?” or “Will AI change what writers do?”, the evidence supports a more precise answer: AI can affect writing tasks and may reduce demand, but these sources do not show that it will eliminate the occupation or predict what will happen to any one person.
