PC prices rise when the parts and business inputs behind a computer become more expensive, less available, or both. In 2026, memory and storage are the most visible pressure points: suppliers are directing capacity toward server products while the broader memory market remains undersupplied. Manufacturers then choose whether to raise prices, reduce discounts, accept lower margins, or ship a different specification. The result is that two computers with similar-looking prices can contain different amounts of RAM, storage, or processing power.
There is no single worldwide percentage that describes every PC price change. A component-market forecast is not the same as a retail forecast, and the effect depends on the computer’s tier, configuration, region, inventory, taxes, currency, and seller.
What makes up the price of a PC?
A finished PC combines a bill of materials with manufacturing, distribution, software, warranty, selling, and financing decisions. The main hardware cost categories are the processor, memory, storage, display, motherboard, power system, graphics hardware, cooling, chassis, battery in a notebook, and smaller components such as circuit boards, capacitors and power-management chips.
Those parts do not contribute equally to every model. A gaming desktop may devote a large share of its cost to a graphics card, while a thin notebook may devote more to its display, battery and compact mechanical design. A basic office notebook and a premium workstation can therefore respond differently to the same component shock.

- Requires overclocking/BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depends on system components, including motherboard and CPU.
- G.SKILL Flare X5 Series DDR5 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F5-6000J3636F16GX2-FX5
- Non-ECC, DDR5 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
- Includes JEDEC default profile, and AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 memory overclock profile
- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
The manufacturer also decides how much of a cost change reaches the customer. It can:
- raise the advertised price;
- remove a temporary promotion or reduce the size of a discount;
- accept a lower gross margin for a period;
- change the RAM or SSD capacity while keeping a similar price;
- move buyers to a higher-priced configuration or discontinue a low-margin model; or
- use existing inventory or supplier contracts to delay the effect.
Retailers add another layer. Their prices reflect inventory age, local competition, taxes, import and trade costs, delivery, currency movements, warranty arrangements and the retailer’s own margin. A factory cost increase can therefore appear quickly in one country, slowly in another, or not at all on a particular model.
Why memory and storage are driving the 2026 pressure
DRAM and NAND supply
TrendForce’s 30 September 2026 analysis says suppliers are continuing to prioritize advanced-process capacity for server products and that the overall memory market remains undersupplied. It projects conventional DRAM contract prices to rise 10–15% quarter over quarter in the fourth quarter of 2026, and NAND Flash contract prices to rise 15–20% over the same period.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
These are contract-market forecasts: prices negotiated between suppliers and business customers. They are not a promise that every desktop, laptop or retail SSD will become 10–20% more expensive. A PC maker may have inventory bought earlier, a long-term contract, a different memory type, or enough margin to absorb part of the increase.
Competition from servers and AI infrastructure
Server and AI infrastructure demand matters because memory manufacturers allocate limited production capacity among product types and customers. When server-focused demand receives priority, capacity available for PC-oriented DRAM or NAND can tighten. That competition is a supply-allocation effect; it does not mean that every component in a consumer PC is being bought directly for AI systems.
Why the impact can be large in a mainstream notebook
TrendForce estimated that the CPU, DRAM and SSD together represented approximately 68% of the bill of materials for a US$900 mainstream notebook in the third quarter of 2026. That estimate applies to that notebook category and period, not to all computers. It does show why memory and storage changes can have an outsized effect on a system whose other components are relatively stable.
How a component increase reaches the shelf
- Capacity is allocated. Memory producers decide how much output goes to server, mobile, PC and other product segments. A constrained segment has less supply available for buyers.
- Contract prices move. Suppliers and manufacturers negotiate new prices. The timing differs according to contracts, purchase cycles and inventory.
- The PC maker chooses a response. It may pass through the cost, absorb it, reduce promotions, alter the configuration, or change the product mix.
- Distribution and retail add local conditions. Shipping, warehousing, taxes, tariffs, currency changes, competition and stock levels affect the final shelf price.
- The buyer sees either a higher price or a different deal. A model can cost more, keep its price but include less RAM or storage, or remain discounted while another configuration rises.
This chain explains why a forecast for DRAM or NAND contracts cannot be converted directly into a forecast for a finished PC. The component’s share of the system cost, the timing of inventory, vendor margins and competitive pressure all affect pass-through.

What the major 2026 forecasts actually say
Several analysts have published figures, but they measure different things and should not be combined into one universal prediction.
| Publisher and date | Measure | Figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| TrendForce, 30 September 2026 | Conventional DRAM contract prices in 4Q26 | 10–15% quarter over quarter | A contract-market forecast, not a retail PC increase |
| TrendForce, 30 September 2026 | NAND Flash contract prices in 4Q26 | 15–20% quarter over quarter | A contract-market forecast, not a retail SSD or PC increase |
| TrendForce, 2026 | CPU, DRAM and SSD share of a US$900 mainstream notebook bill of materials in 3Q26 | Approximately 68% | A specific notebook tier and period, not every PC |
| Gartner, 2026 | Combined DRAM and SSD prices by the end of 2026 compared with 2025 | 130% projected increase | A Gartner forecast for the component combination and comparison period |
| Gartner, 2026 | PC prices over the same comparison | 17% projected increase | A forecast, not a universal observed rise |
| Omdia, 2026 | Worldwide PC shipments | 12% decline to 245 million units | A shipment forecast that reflects weaker demand under higher costs; it is not a retail inflation measure |
| IDC, 2026 | Worldwide PC market units and revenue | Units down 11.3%; revenue up 1.6% | IDC links the divergence to higher average selling prices; its assumptions differ from Omdia and Gartner |
Gartner analyst Ranjit Atwal, quoted in a 26 February 2026 forecast, said: “The sub-$500 entry-level PC segment will disappear by 2028.” That is a forecast about the future shape of the entry-level market, not evidence that every computer currently below US$500 has already vanished.
Why budget PCs can feel the increase first
Low-priced models usually leave less margin available to absorb a higher component bill. Their buyers are also more price-sensitive, so manufacturers face a difficult choice: raise the price and risk losing demand, keep the price and accept less margin, or alter the specification.
That can produce several outcomes rather than one guaranteed result:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- higher advertised prices;
- fewer or shorter promotions;
- less RAM or a smaller SSD at the same apparent price;
- fewer models at the lowest tier; or
- a shift toward more profitable mid-range configurations.
A premium model may have more room to absorb a component increase, but it is not immune. Expensive notebooks and desktops can include larger memory and storage capacities, so a percentage change in those parts can represent a substantial absolute amount. Vendors may also preserve a premium feature set while increasing the price.
Why a similar price may buy different specifications
Omdia reports that higher component costs have led vendors to reduce promotions, raise prices and adjust configurations. IDC has described possible reductions in RAM and SSD configurations. This means a price comparison based only on the model name or headline discount can be misleading.
Check the exact configuration, including:
- RAM capacity, memory generation and whether it is upgradeable;
- SSD capacity, interface and drive type;
- processor model and power class, not just the brand family;
- graphics processor and its memory;
- display size, resolution and refresh rate;
- battery capacity for a notebook;
- operating-system edition, warranty and included accessories; and
- whether the listed price is a temporary promotion or the regular price.
A seller can keep a model near its old price by shipping 8GB instead of 16GB of RAM or 512GB instead of 1TB of storage. The sticker has not risen, but the value proposition has changed.

Other forces that affect PC prices
CPU pricing and product transitions
CPU prices, manufacturing costs and changes in processor generations affect the bill of materials. A new platform can require a different motherboard, memory standard or power design. Vendors may also stop producing an older configuration, leaving fewer low-cost choices even when the replacement is faster.

HP’s 2026 explainer describes manufacturing capacity as slow to adjust and says a new production facility may take 18 to 24 months to come online. When capacity is tight, a supplier cannot necessarily respond immediately by adding output. Technology transitions and the capital investment needed for new processes can therefore influence costs over a longer cycle.
Logistics and production moves
Transportation, warehousing and supply-chain management add cost. TrendForce’s October 2026 notebook outlook identifies logistics costs when manufacturers shift production locations. A product assembled in a different region may have a different freight route, labor structure, tariff exposure or component sourcing pattern.
Smaller components and geopolitical exposure
TrendForce also identifies printed circuit boards, multilayer ceramic capacitors and power-management integrated circuits as components facing allocation, raw-material or geopolitical pressure. These are secondary drivers in the current discussion, but they can matter when several costs move together.
Regional pricing
The same computer can have different prices across countries because of currency movements, taxes, tariffs, delivery costs, warranty obligations and local competition. Comparing a US launch price with a tax-inclusive street price elsewhere does not isolate component inflation.

- Match the market. Compare the same country, currency and tax treatment.
- Match the timing. Separate a launch price, a temporary sale and a current regular price.
- Match the configuration. Verify RAM, SSD, CPU, graphics, display and operating system.
- Match the product type. Compare desktops with desktops and notebooks with notebooks; do not compare a bare component forecast with a complete system.
- Check what changed. Note whether the price, discount, specification or included warranty changed.
- Use several sellers. A single retailer’s stock position may reflect a local inventory decision rather than a market-wide move.
Price-comparison services and retailer listings can help with current offers, but a low price may reflect an older processor, less memory, a shorter warranty or a refurbished unit. Record the full specification before deciding that one listing is cheaper.

Compare upgrade economics
If a desktop accepts standard DDR5 memory, buying a compatible DDR5 desktop RAM kit later may be an option, but compatibility depends on the motherboard, supported memory type, capacity limits and available slots. A memory upgrade is a component purchase, not a solution to every rise in complete-PC prices. Notebook memory may be soldered or otherwise difficult to replace.
Consider timing without assuming a correction
Existing stock, promotions and supplier contracts can create short-term bargains even during a rising component cycle. However, the available forecasts do not establish a precise date when prices will normalize. Buy when the required configuration is available at an acceptable total cost rather than treating a forecast as a guaranteed near-term discount.
Compare total ownership cost
Include the operating system, warranty, delivery, required accessories, upgrade cost and any tax or import charge. A lower headline price can become more expensive after adding a monitor, larger SSD, memory upgrade or extended warranty.
What is established—and what is not
The evidence supports a clear explanation of the mechanism: constrained memory and storage supply, capacity directed toward server products, and higher component costs can pressure PC makers. Vendors then decide how to divide the burden among prices, margins, promotions and specifications.
It does not establish one globally representative current PC price increase, one cause for every category, or a firm date for normalization. Gartner, IDC, Omdia and TrendForce published different forecasts using different measures and assumptions. Treat each number as a dated forecast or estimate for its stated market, not as a universal result.
For a buyer, the practical test is simple: compare like-for-like configurations in the same region and period, then check whether a change is in the price, the discount or the included hardware. That is the most reliable way to see how market pressure has affected the PC in front of you.
