AS9100 certification is independent certification of an aerospace quality management system (QMS), not approval of a product or a guarantee of customer work. The 9100 family is built on ISO 9001 and adds aviation, space and defense requirements. Most aerospace suppliers use 9100, while aviation maintenance organizations and distributors may need 9110 or 9120 instead. The practical path is to identify the correct standard, bring your QMS into conformity, create the required OASIS access, and select an accredited certification body (CB) that participates in the IAQG Certification Scheme.
What AS9100 certification actually certifies
In IAQG terminology, the standard is 9100; “AS9100” is the name commonly used by suppliers for the aerospace version. Certification assesses whether your organization’s management system meets the applicable 9100-series requirements. It covers how you control processes, risks, suppliers, records, product safety and other quality activities across the organization’s declared scope.
It does not certify that a particular part, material or service is approved for flight. It does not replace a customer’s purchase order, technical specification, source-inspection requirement or regulatory obligation. A customer may still perform its own audits, approve processes or require additional credentials after you become certified.

Choose the right standard in the 9100 family
The family contains distinct standards. Select according to what your organization does, not simply according to the industry in which your customers operate.

IAQG says 9100 can be used at different supply-chain levels and is primarily intended for aerospace, space and defense. It can also suit another sector that needs controls beyond ISO 9001. Before requesting quotations, describe your actual activities, sites, products and services so the CB can determine the applicable standard and audit scope.
What 9100 adds to an ISO 9001-based QMS
ISO 9001 supplies the quality-management foundation, but aerospace customers generally need additional confidence in product integrity and supply-chain control. IAQG identifies additions such as operational risk management, product safety and review or testing of raw-material data. These requirements affect daily planning and evidence, not just the quality manual.
Operational risk management
Your system must identify and control risks that could affect conformity, delivery or customer requirements. In practice, that means connecting risk assessment to planning, production changes, outsourced work, nonconforming output and corrective action. A risk register that is never used in decisions will not demonstrate an effective system.
Product safety
Product-safety controls require the organization to recognize hazards and responsibilities associated with the product or service. Define who can make safety-related decisions, how safety information is communicated, and how suspected safety issues are escalated and contained.

Material and process data
Aerospace work often depends on objective evidence about raw materials, special processes, inspections and tests. Establish how certificates, test reports, traceability records and acceptance data are reviewed, retained and linked to the relevant job or part. The exact records depend on your scope and customer requirements.
The certification route, step by step
IAQG’s published route is straightforward, although the detailed audit plan and commercial terms come from the CB you choose.

- Obtain the applicable standard. Purchase or otherwise obtain the current 9100, 9110 or 9120 document that matches your activities. Confirm the edition and any applicable national adoption before building your system.
- Map your existing QMS. Compare current procedures and records with every applicable clause. Identify gaps in risk management, product safety, configuration and change control, supplier oversight, competence, inspection, traceability, nonconforming output and corrective action.
- Implement and operate the changes. Update processes, train affected personnel and generate objective records during normal work. Certification is based on an operating system, not on a set of documents prepared immediately before an audit.
- Create your OASIS account and contacts. OASIS is used for organization contacts, access management, audit feedback, audit-report access and responses to audit nonconformities. Keep contact and scope information current.
- Request quotations and select a participating accredited CB. Ask candidate bodies to confirm participation in the IAQG Certification Scheme and accreditation for your standard, industry and geographic scope. Then follow that CB’s process for initial certification.
IAQG states that CB audits are conducted against ISO/IEC 17021-1, IAQG 9104/1 and IAQG 9101. Those scheme documents govern how certification is delivered, while your selected CB sets the detailed schedule, quotation, preparation instructions and audit arrangements.
Prepare your organization before asking for quotes
Define the certification scope
Write a precise description of the products, services, processes and sites you want certified. Include design responsibility, manufacturing or service activities, warehousing, purchasing and any remote or supporting functions that affect the QMS. An overly broad scope can increase audit complexity; an overly narrow scope may fail to satisfy a customer contract.
Control outsourced and special processes
List external providers whose work can affect conformity or delivery. Set approval, monitoring, verification and re-evaluation criteria proportionate to the risk. Make purchase requirements unambiguous, including specifications, revision status, inspection evidence, competence or qualification requirements and notification of changes where applicable.

Make records retrievable
Auditors need objective evidence. Organize training and competence records, contract reviews, production travelers, inspection results, calibration status, supplier evaluations, nonconformance records, corrective actions and management-review outputs so that a transaction can be traced from requirement to acceptance.
Run internal checks and management review
Use internal audits to test whether processes work in practice and whether records support the declared scope. Management review should consider performance, risks, customer feedback, supplier results, nonconformities, resource needs and opportunities for improvement. Corrective action should address causes and verify effectiveness rather than merely close a finding.
How to select and check a certification body
Do not choose solely on the lowest quotation. Start with scheme eligibility and scope, then compare the practical fit.

IAQG’s overview does not establish a universal price, lead time, audit-day count or success rate. Those variables depend on factors such as employee numbers, site structure, process complexity and scope, so obtain written quotations from candidate bodies rather than relying on an industry-wide estimate.
Use OASIS to verify certification information
IAQG identifies OASIS as the authoritative place to check scheme information. It provides information about participating certification bodies, national accreditation bodies, authenticated aerospace auditors and suppliers certified or registered under the 9100 series.

For a supplier or prospective customer, check that the organization’s certificate is visible, current and issued for the activities and sites that matter to the transaction. Compare the certificate scope with the work being offered; a certificate for one manufacturing activity does not automatically cover a different service, site or legal entity.
When checking a CB, confirm both participation and relevant accreditation in the current OASIS information. If the public record and a sales quotation appear inconsistent, ask the CB to explain the difference before signing a contract.

A common question is: “Is a calibration supplier required to be accredited?” IAQG’s February 2024 clarification says the 9100:2016 series does not, by itself, require a calibration supplier to hold ISO/IEC 17025, Z540.1, 9100 or ISO 9001 certification.
The clarification ties external-provider controls to the provider’s effect on subsequent product realization or the final product. Your organization therefore needs a risk-based method for deciding what approval, verification and monitoring a calibration or other service provider requires. The answer may differ for a measurement that determines product acceptance and for a service with no effect on conformity.
This is not a blanket exemption from customer, statutory or regulatory requirements. A contract, authority or industry rule can still require a particular accreditation or credential. Record the rationale for your decision and flow applicable requirements to the provider.

When 9133 product qualification is involved
IAQG states that original component manufacturers and designated value-added distributors seeking product qualification under 9133 must maintain 9100 certification visible in OASIS. That is a specific product-qualification condition. It should not be interpreted as a general rule that every aerospace supplier needs 9133 qualification or that every 9100 certificate confers product qualification.
Benefits, limits and ongoing obligations
IAQG reports more than 18,000 AQMS certifications covering 25,000 sites; the page does not state a publication year for those figures. The scale helps explain why customers use the scheme as a common supplier-control reference.
IAQG also says the scheme can reduce redundant customer auditing. Treat that as a potential supply-chain benefit, not a promise that a particular customer will stop auditing you. You must continue operating the QMS, maintaining records, addressing nonconformities and completing the surveillance or renewal activities required by your CB.
Certification can strengthen confidence in process control and make your status easier for customers to verify. It cannot compensate for weak technical capability, late delivery, poor configuration control or failure to meet a customer’s engineering and regulatory requirements.
A practical decision checklist
- Have you identified whether 9100, 9110 or 9120 matches your principal activities?
- Have you defined the legal entities, sites, products, services and outsourced processes in scope?
- Have you mapped the QMS to the applicable clauses and operated the revised processes long enough to produce evidence?
- Are risk, product-safety, traceability, material-data and external-provider controls proportionate to actual product impact?
- Do responsible employees understand their roles and how to retrieve records?
- Is your OASIS account configured with current organization contacts?
- Have you checked candidate CB participation and accreditation in current OASIS information?
- Does the proposed certificate scope match the work customers will buy?
- Have customer, statutory and regulatory requirements been identified separately from the baseline standard?
If the answer to these questions is yes, you are in a stronger position to request meaningful quotations and enter the certification process with a scope that customers can understand and verify.
