Short answer: an advertisement below a Google AI Overview is a paid Search, Shopping, local or app placement—not part of the AI-generated answer. Google runs it through its advertising auction and labels it as sponsored. The Overview is a generated synthesis with links to web sources; the unit underneath is a commercial message that should be evaluated separately.
Two separate layers on one results page
Google can place an AI Overview and an advertisement in the same search experience, which makes the two easy to confuse. They are produced by different systems for different purposes.
The AI Overview
An AI Overview is Google’s generated synthesis of information it considers useful for the query. It may include links to web pages that support or expand the response. Its purpose is to help with exploration and explanation, not to sell a particular product or service.

The sponsored placement
An ad is inventory sold to an advertiser. It can be a text Search ad, a Shopping unit, a local ad or an app promotion. Google says existing eligible campaigns can appear above, below or within an AI Overview. The ad does not become an organic result merely because it appears close to the generated text, and the Overview does not endorse the advertiser.
A practical rule is to draw an imaginary line between the layers: use the Overview to understand the subject, then assess the sponsored unit as you would any other advertisement by checking who paid for it, what it promises and where its link leads.
How Google decides that an ad belongs there
Google uses its existing advertising-auction ranking system and signals to decide whether an eligible ad can be shown. Those signals include the query, the advertiser’s campaign settings, bid and predicted relevance or quality. Placement is therefore an advertising decision, not a statement that the business is the best source for the answer.

Commercial intent can be inferred from context
Not every ad-triggering query contains words such as “buy,” “price” or “near me.” Google says its systems look for commercial intent and a relevant quality ad. For ads shown inside an Overview, Google considers both the words you entered and the Overview’s content.
Google’s example is a question about a green swimming pool. The wording may be informational, but the combined context can indicate that a pool vacuum cleaner could help. An ad for that product can therefore appear even though the searcher did not explicitly ask for a product recommendation. The inference is about a possible next step, not proof that the product is necessary or that the advertiser’s claims are correct.
What the auction does not mean
- An advertiser cannot pay to rewrite, source or influence the AI Overview’s text.
- An ad’s position does not make the advertiser an organic ranking winner.
- Being shown does not establish that the product is the safest, cheapest or most suitable option.
Google Search says ads are displayed only when it believes they are relevant to the terms entered. Relevance is a threshold for showing an ad, not an independent quality certification.

Where ads can appear and how to label them
Google’s October 13, 2025 announcement describes a persistent label for text advertising and a separate label for Shopping units. The exact arrangement can change as Google tests layouts, but the following distinctions explain what you are seeing.

For text ads, Google says the “Sponsored results” header can appear above or below the Overview. A “Hide sponsored results” control may be offered with that group. Shopping units use the “Sponsored products” label. Look for the label and the advertiser identity rather than relying on color, position or visual similarity to the surrounding answer.
Why an informational search can produce a product ad
AI Overviews often answer questions that sit early in a decision process: how something works, what causes a problem or which options exist. Those questions can still imply a commercial follow-up. Someone asking how to remove green water from a pool might need an explanation of algae, testing and filtration; the same person might also be considering a vacuum or treatment product.
Google’s matching system can use that relationship to find an ad that appears useful in context. It does not mean Google has concluded that you intend to purchase, and it does not change the informational nature of your original query. Treat the ad as one possible commercial response to the situation described, not as a missing paragraph from the Overview.

Availability depends on market, language, device and rollout
Google documents two different scopes, which are easy to conflate.
Ads above or below an Overview
Eligible campaigns can appear above or below AI Overviews in all 200-plus markets where AI Overviews are available. That is a broad eligibility statement, not a guarantee that every query in every market will show an ad. Auction results, commercial intent, language, device and local availability still determine what appears.

Google’s Ads Help documentation lists ads inside AI Overviews as available in English on mobile and desktop in Australia, Canada, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore and the United States. Google can expand, limit or redesign this placement, so the list should be read as a dated availability description rather than a permanent worldwide rule.

If you do not see an ad in a particular country, language or device, that does not indicate an error. It may simply mean the placement has not rolled out there, the query did not produce a suitable ad, or no advertiser won that auction.
How to verify that the unit is an advertisement
- Find the persistent sponsored label. On current layouts, look for “Sponsored results” above the grouped text ads or “Sponsored products” for Shopping units. Do not assume that a card is organic because it is adjacent to the Overview.
- Identify the advertiser. Expand the ad’s business or disclosure controls where available and note the company name, domain and location information. A recognizable brand name is not a substitute for checking the destination.
- Separate claims from sources. Links cited by the Overview support Google’s generated synthesis; the ad link is selected by the advertiser. Open them as separate sources and check pricing, specifications, return terms and date.
- Use the Ads Transparency Center when you need more context. Google’s center lets users inspect ads served by verified advertisers. It can help confirm who is behind a creative or campaign, although it is not a product-review database.
- Check the destination before acting. Confirm that the address is the expected business domain, that the page explains the offer, and that any subscription, shipping or data-collection terms are visible before submitting information.
Google also says advertisers cannot buy better placement in organic Search results. A sponsored position can be prominent because the auction found it relevant and competitive; it is still not an organic ranking signal.

Hide a sponsored group when the control is available
The 2025 layout announcement includes a “Hide sponsored results” control for the grouped text-ad presentation. Using it changes what you see in that moment or interface; it does not turn off advertising across Google or remove the underlying auction.

Adjust topics in My Ad Center
My Ad Center lets you change ad personalization and limit selected ad topics. These controls affect the signals used to tailor advertising, not whether Google can show a relevant ad at all. A less-personalized ad can still appear because the query itself supplies context.
Understand what controls cannot do
Google states that advertisers cannot directly target only AI Overview placements and cannot opt out of serving ads in AI Overviews. Publishers and searchers therefore should not expect a campaign-level switch that removes this one placement. Google reports ads shown within AI Overviews as “top ads,” rather than providing a separate performance segment for that location.

What the placement tells you—and what it does not
- It tells you: Google’s systems found an eligible ad and judged it sufficiently relevant or competitive for that auction and context.
- It may tell you: the query or Overview describes a situation in which a commercial product, service or local provider could be useful.
- It does not tell you: that Google independently tested the product, that the advertiser is the only option, or that the ad’s claims are included in the Overview’s evidence.
- It does not tell you: that every searcher will see the same ad. Location, language, device, personalization, timing and auction conditions can change the result.
How the experience is changing
Google says more than 1.5 billion people worldwide use AI Overviews. The company also reports more than five trillion Google searches annually, based on its internal January 2025 data. In an experiment using internal data from September 2024 through April 2025, Google reported more than a 10 percent increase in Google usage for query types that show AI Overviews in the United States and India.
Those figures are Google’s company-reported measurements, not independent industry estimates. They indicate why ad placement around generated answers matters to searchers, but they do not measure whether an individual ad was accurate, useful or worth buying. Markets, languages, formats and reporting may continue to change as the Overview experience evolves.

- Is the unit marked “Sponsored results” or “Sponsored products”?
- Are you looking at the Overview’s cited web links or an advertiser’s landing page?
- What company will receive your visit or information?
- Does the offer answer your need, or is it merely adjacent to the topic?
- Have you checked independent specifications, reviews, safety guidance or local rules when those matter?
- For a purchase, have you verified the total cost, delivery, cancellation and return terms?
The simplest interpretation remains the most reliable: the AI Overview is generated information, while the labeled unit below it is paid advertising. Use each for its proper purpose and judge the ad on its own evidence.
