The biggest concrete development for high-performance NFS storage is a standard way for pNFS clients to access NVMe namespaces through the pNFS SCSI layout. Recent NFSv4.2 specifications also extend how files can be opened and delegated, while earlier NFSv4.2 features add operations such as server-side copy, cloning, sparse-file handling, and space reservation. These are protocol capabilities—not proof that a particular client and server support them, or a guarantee of higher throughput.
First, separate pNFS from NFSv4.2
pNFS is an optional NFSv4.1 architecture
NFSv4.1 defines parallel NFS, or pNFS, as an optional way to separate file metadata coordination from file data access. A metadata server can provide a client with a layout describing where and how to access data; the client can then perform data I/O through a layout-specific path, potentially involving multiple data servers. The layout type and storage protocol determine what actually happens on the data path. pNFS is not itself a performance setting, and its specification does not promise a measured speedup.
NFSv4.2 is a minor-version extension
NFSv4.2 builds on NFSv4.1 and adds optional operations. RFC 7862 describes its aim as making common local-filesystem features available remotely. Among its additions are server-side copy and clone operations, sparse-file operations, space reservation, application I/O advice, and pNFS-related interactions. A client and server must support the particular operation being used; a system described as “NFSv4.2 capable” need not implement or enable every optional feature. Implementations also need to satisfy the required NFSv4.1 features.

The clearest new pNFS development: NVMe namespaces
RFC 9561, published by the IETF in April 2024, specifies how NVMe namespaces can be addressed using the pNFS SCSI layout. It allows the NVMe protocol family to be used over transports including PCIe, RDMA, TCP, and Fibre Channel. This gives implementations a standardized way to connect pNFS’s layout model with NVMe storage; it does not mean that every NFS server, client, NVMe target, or transport already supports the combination.
With a layout-based data path, clients may access storage without sending every data operation through the metadata server. That can change where data traffic flows and how it scales, but the actual result depends on the implementation, layout, network, workload, and storage system. A device’s NVMe interface alone does not make it a shared pNFS target or create a complete deployment.

Direct storage access changes the security boundary
NFS/RPC security does not automatically protect I/O that travels directly to NVMe storage. RFC 9561 discusses this distinction and recommends protection appropriate to the deployment for IP-based storage traffic. Administrators need to verify how clients are authorized to reach data targets and how traffic is protected, rather than assuming metadata-path security covers every storage path.
Fencing and write-cache durability matter
RFC 9561 describes client fencing based on persistent reservations and requires a volatile write cache to be flushed before LAYOUTCOMMIT completes when such a cache is enabled. Fencing helps prevent a client that should no longer access storage from continuing to issue I/O; flushing addresses whether acknowledged writes have reached durable storage. These are operational correctness requirements, not optional performance optimizations to overlook when evaluating an NVMe-backed design.

What NFSv4.2 adds beyond NVMe access
The NFSv4.2 feature set is broader than pNFS. Server-side copy and clone can let a server perform data movement or duplication rather than requiring a client to read and retransmit all the data. Sparse-file operations expose ways to work with file holes, while space reservation allows an application or client to request storage allocation. I/O advice gives applications a way to communicate hints about access patterns.
The practical value of each feature depends on end-to-end support and the workload. A copy operation is useful only if the relevant implementations support it and the operation fits the data movement involved. Space reservation does not substitute for monitoring capacity. I/O advice does not force a server or storage device to deliver a particular result. Verify specific operations in the deployed client/server combination rather than inferring them from the protocol version alone.

Recent RFCs extend behavior incrementally
Recent additions to the NFSv4 standards set refine particular interactions rather than replacing the NFS architecture. The RFCs below are published specifications; their existence does not establish support in a given product or kernel.
| Specification | What it covers | Published/listed date |
|---|---|---|
| RFC 9737 | Reporting errors through LAYOUTRETURN in NFSv4.2 | February 2025 |
| RFC 9754 | Extensions for opening and delegating files in NFSv4.2 | March 2025 |
| RFC 9766 | Weak cache consistency for NFSv4.2 flexible file layouts | April 2025 |
The NFSv4 working-group record also lists Internet-Drafts on COPY implementation experience, dated May 15, 2026, and QUIC RPC, dated July 22, 2026. An Internet-Draft is work in progress, not a final standard; its presence is evidence of ongoing work, not a promise of finalized protocol behavior or broad deployment.

What Linux and vendor materials do—and do not—show
The Linux kernel documentation index includes material on NFS LOCALIO, pNFS reference counting, the NFSv4.1 server implementation, and server statistics. Those documentation areas show that the topics are covered in kernel documentation; they do not prove that a capability is present in every packaged kernel, enabled by a distribution, or associated with a performance gain. Check the exact kernel and implementation documentation for the environment being considered.
A Linux Foundation webinar page discusses Linux pNFS updates and AI/GPU storage workloads and identifies Hammerspace as its sponsor. A 2024 SNIA presentation describes Flex Files, N-to-1, attribute delegations, and fast failover as existing in the presentation’s framing, while listing kernel bypass, client-based erasure coding, broker TLS, and converged file-range locking as future or upcoming items. These materials can indicate areas of engineering interest, but their sponsorship, presenter, and date matter: they are not independent performance tests or evidence that every Linux distribution has the same feature set today.
How to evaluate a pNFS or NFSv4.2 deployment
Standards define mechanisms, not which architecture will be faster for a particular workload. Before choosing a design or interpreting a vendor claim, compare the implementation and operational details that determine whether those mechanisms will help:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Metadata coordination and failure behavior: establish what remains available if the metadata server is unavailable, how clients recover layouts, and what failure modes the architecture is designed to handle.
- Layout and support matrix: identify the pNFS layout type, storage protocol, client and server versions, and which optional operations are implemented and enabled on both ends.
- Workload shape: distinguish large sequential transfers from small-file and metadata-heavy work. A data path designed for parallel I/O does not by itself remove metadata bottlenecks.
- Transport and topology: confirm that clients, targets, network paths, and devices support the intended transport, and check for contention or extra hops in the actual topology.
- Security and access control: map the metadata and direct data paths separately, including authorization and suitable protection for IP-based storage traffic.
- Recovery and durability: ask how fencing, layout recovery, and volatile-cache flushing work during failures and client transitions.
Compare measured results only for the exact configuration and workload you care about. The cited standards specify protocol behavior, and the cited webinar and presentation discuss implementation activity; none supplies an independently measured pNFS throughput figure that supports a general claim of superiority.
