For a long-term index investor, one losing week is usually a change in quoted market value—not a change to the retirement goal itself. It lowers the current value of an index fund or ETF, but it does not automatically require selling, changing an asset allocation, or stopping contributions. The right response depends on the exact benchmark, your time horizon, cash needs, risk tolerance and written investment plan.

What a weekly loss actually changes

The index quote

An index measures the value of a defined basket of securities. When the index falls between two weekly closes, the market value of the securities represented by that benchmark has declined over that interval. Your account changes only to the extent that you own a fund, ETF or other product tracking that benchmark.

An index is not the same thing as your fund. An index fund seeks to track a market index, but its return can differ because of management fees, trading costs, portfolio sampling, cash holdings, dividend treatment and tracking error. A fund may also trade at a price that differs slightly from its net asset value during the day.

A paper loss versus a realized loss

If you continue to hold the investment, the decline is an unrealized, or paper, loss. The quoted value is lower, but no transaction has converted that price into a final gain or loss. Selling during the decline turns the market price at that moment into the result in your account. Fidelity warns that investors who sell to avoid further losses can lock in the decline and miss a later recovery.

This distinction does not mean every holding should be kept indefinitely. Selling can be appropriate when your goal, time horizon, risk capacity, tax situation or investment policy has changed. The point is to make that decision for a plan-based reason rather than treating a single weekly move as a forecast.

Why one week usually says little about a retirement plan

Stocks are risky in the short term

SEC investor education materials describe stocks as very risky over short periods. A week is too short to establish whether a market trend has changed, whether an economic forecast is correct or what returns will look like over the next decade. Daily and weekly prices incorporate changing expectations about earnings, interest rates, inflation, policy and risk, often before those developments are clear to an individual investor.

Time horizon changes the decision

Long-term investors typically save for goals many years away, such as retirement. A long horizon gives a portfolio more time to experience both declines and recoveries, although it does not guarantee a recovery or a positive return. Someone who needs the money next month has a different problem from someone making a contribution for a retirement date 25 years away.

Before reacting, identify the date on which the money must be available, how much of the account will be needed, and whether other resources can cover near-term spending. Those answers determine how much short-term volatility you can financially and emotionally tolerate.

“Nasdaq” is not one benchmark

The label Nasdaq is incomplete. A report may refer to the Nasdaq Composite, which covers a broad set of Nasdaq-listed companies, or the Nasdaq-100, which represents 100 large nonfinancial companies listed on the Nasdaq exchange. Other Nasdaq indexes also exist. Confirm the exact benchmark, fund ticker, share class and whether the quoted result is a price return or total return before comparing a loss.

Nasdaq and S&P 500 comparison

Question Nasdaq benchmark S&P 500 Why it matters
Which index? Specify Composite, Nasdaq-100 or another named index. The S&P 500 is a large-cap U.S. equity index. Different indexes can fall by different amounts in the same week.
Company and sector mix Depends on the benchmark; technology and other growth-oriented companies can have a large influence in commonly followed Nasdaq indexes. Large U.S. companies across multiple sectors, with weights affected by market capitalization. Concentration affects sensitivity to interest rates, earnings expectations and sector-specific news.
Diversification Varies by index methodology and constituent count. Broader sector representation than a technology-focused benchmark, but still concentrated in U.S. large-cap equities. Neither benchmark is a complete global portfolio or a guarantee against losses.
Fund result Can differ from the index because of fees, trading costs, dividends and tracking error. Can also differ from the index for the same reasons. Compare your fund’s return with its stated benchmark, not with a different headline index.

A Nasdaq-100 decline and an S&P 500 decline are not interchangeable signals. If a technology-heavy benchmark drops while the S&P 500 is comparatively stable, the difference may reflect sector concentration rather than a broad change in every U.S. stock. Conversely, a broad market decline can affect both benchmarks while still producing different fund results.

Price return versus total return

A price-return index measures changes in constituent share prices. A total-return version assumes dividends are reinvested. A fund that distributes or reinvests dividends may therefore show a result that does not exactly match a price-only quote. Check the benchmark description and the fund’s performance page before concluding that tracking is poor.

What to do while you are still accumulating

Keep scheduled contributions if the plan still fits

Dollar-cost averaging means investing an equal dollar amount or percentage of income at regular intervals. At lower prices, the same contribution buys more shares; at higher prices, it buys fewer. For example, a $500 contribution buys five shares at $100 each and about 5.56 shares at $90, before fees and taxes. The lower price does not guarantee a rebound; it only changes the number of shares purchased for that contribution.

Investor.gov describes regular investing as putting a set amount or percentage into an investment account and notes that compounding benefits money left invested over years. Continuing contributions can be sensible when the money is for a distant goal, your emergency reserve is adequate and your target allocation remains appropriate.

Rebalance by policy, not by headline

If your written allocation calls for a specific percentage in U.S. equities, bonds and other assets, a market decline may leave you temporarily below the equity target. A scheduled rebalancing rule—such as a calendar date or a predetermined percentage band—can bring the portfolio back toward its intended risk level. Do not sell or buy solely because a news story labels the week “historic.” Follow the rule you selected when calm.

Protect money needed soon

  • Keep an emergency reserve separate from money invested for retirement.
  • Do not invest near-term bills in a volatile stock index merely because prices have fallen.
  • Review high-interest debt and insurance needs before increasing risk.
  • Account for taxes and transaction costs before making a change.

What changes when withdrawals are near

The same weekly decline can matter more when you are close to spending the money. With less time to recover, selling shares to fund withdrawals during a decline can reduce the number of shares remaining for a later recovery. This is a sequence-of-returns risk: the order of gains and losses matters when withdrawals occur at the same time.

Questions for a pre-retirement review

  1. How many months or years of planned spending are held outside volatile equities?
  2. Can pensions, wages, cash or high-quality bonds cover withdrawals during a prolonged stock decline?
  3. Does the current allocation still match your ability—not just your willingness—to tolerate losses?
  4. Would a sale create a significant tax bill or violate an account rule?
  5. Does the written withdrawal plan specify what gets sold and when?

SEC guidance supports considering long-term goals, risk acceptance and comfort with volatility, but it does not prescribe one allocation for everyone. A person near a withdrawal date may reasonably use a different mix from a younger accumulator even when both own the same index fund.

Is a weekly drop a correction or normal volatility?

Labels are descriptive, not predictive. Market commentary commonly calls a decline of about 10% from a recent high a correction, but the label does not tell you when prices will recover or whether a deeper decline will follow. A one-week move can be ordinary volatility even when it feels large in a personal account.

Fidelity’s historical summary, published in 2026 using data through December 31, 2025, reports approximately three declines of 5% per year, one correction of 10% per year and one decline of roughly 15% every three years. It also reports that the S&P 500’s average calendar-year decline has been about 14% since 1980. These are historical observations, not a schedule for the next year.

Situation What it establishes What it does not establish
One losing week The quoted value fell over that week. It does not forecast the next week, year or decade.
A decline approaching 10% from a recent high Commentators may call it a correction. It does not identify the bottom or guarantee a quick rebound.
Several months of falling prices Risk has persisted and the plan may deserve review. It does not prove that selling now will improve the outcome.

Why an index fund may not match the headline index

  • Fees: Expense ratios and other fund costs reduce the return shareholders receive.
  • Trading costs: Buying and selling securities incurs spreads, commissions or market-impact costs.
  • Tracking error: A fund’s return can deviate from its benchmark because of implementation and timing.
  • Sampling: Some funds hold a representative sample rather than every constituent in exact index weights.
  • Dividends: The fund’s dividend timing and reinvestment treatment may differ from a price-only index.
  • Taxes: A taxable distribution or sale can change your after-tax result even when the pre-tax index move is identical.

SEC guidance specifically notes that fees, trading costs and tracking error can cause index funds to underperform their indexes. Compare the fund’s stated benchmark, expense ratio, tracking history and distribution policy rather than relying on a television ticker.

A practical decision process after a bad week

  1. Name the holding precisely. Record the fund or ETF, benchmark, share class and whether the displayed return is price or total return.
  2. Identify the money’s job. Separate retirement savings decades away from cash needed for rent, tuition, taxes or a near-term withdrawal.
  3. Check your target allocation. Compare current percentages with the policy you chose before the decline.
  4. Test your risk capacity. Ask whether a larger or longer loss would force you to sell, borrow or abandon essential spending.
  5. Review the contribution rule. If regular investing remains affordable, continue the scheduled amount instead of trying to guess the bottom.
  6. Use the rebalancing rule. Make changes only when the portfolio has crossed the threshold or date specified in your plan.
  7. Document exceptions. If your goal, income, emergency reserve or tax position has changed, record the reason for any allocation change.

Common mistakes to avoid

Turning a short-term quote into a long-term forecast

A weekly percentage is an observation about a defined interval. It is not an annual-return estimate and cannot be multiplied by 52 to predict a year. Investor.gov notes that 7% to 10% is sometimes used as a long-term estimate for diversified U.S.-stock annual returns; that figure is an estimate, not a promise and says nothing about the path returns will take.

Stopping contributions because prices are lower

Stopping may leave you with fewer shares and can turn a temporary market decision into a permanent savings shortfall. Pause or reduce contributions when cash flow, debt, emergency needs or a changed goal requires it—not merely because the index had a bad week.

Changing benchmarks without noticing

Moving from a broad U.S. index to a narrower or more concentrated benchmark can increase risk even if the new fund has a familiar name. Compare holdings, sector weights, geographic exposure and fees before switching.

Assuming recovery has a timetable

Historical recoveries show that markets have regained lost ground and produced long-term gains after many downturns, but Fidelity’s disclosures emphasize that past performance does not guarantee future results. No reliable calendar date can be promised for a recovery.

The bottom line for long-term investors

One weekly Nasdaq or S&P 500 loss is normally a reason to check your plan, not to abandon it. Confirm the exact benchmark, distinguish a fund’s return from the index’s return, keep long-horizon contributions on schedule when affordable, and rebalance only according to a deliberate policy. If withdrawals are close, focus on cash reserves, sequence risk and whether the allocation matches your ability to withstand losses. The decision should be anchored to the goal and the time horizon, not to the emotional intensity of a single week.
