A nearly two-metre swordfish carcass found on Haida Gwaii is an unusual sight in British Columbia. It fits a broader picture of warming oceans and shifting marine conditions, but one fish cannot show why it died, why it came ashore, or whether swordfish are becoming more common in B.C. waters.

What happened on Haida Gwaii?

In an October 8, 2026 account, the University of British Columbia (UBC) reported that filmmaker and outdoorsperson Quinn Barabash found a nearly two-metre-long swordfish carcass on remote Haida Gwaii, off northern British Columbia. The UBC authors describe swordfish as large, highly migratory fish usually associated with temperate and warmer tropical waters, far south of Haida Gwaii. They say swordfish are thought to have been documented in B.C. only twice before; that is the authors’ assessment, not a verified complete count of every past record. UBC’s account of the finding does not report a verified examination or cause of death.

Does the carcass prove climate change or El Niño brought the fish north?

No. The sighting is compatible with changing ocean conditions, but it does not establish why this individual fish was in the area or why it died. UBC’s account points to long-term ocean warming and a developing El Niño as possible factors that may make B.C. waters more attractive to warm-water species. That is a possible explanation for unusual distributions, not a finding about this fish’s death or stranding. Without an authoritative cause-of-death assessment, attributing the carcass to heat, El Niño, illness, injury, or another event would go beyond the available evidence.

How does one unusual sighting fit the wider pattern?

Unusual arrivals are not the same as population trends

UBC notes that during the 2014–16 marine heatwave known as the Blob, ocean sunfish, Humboldt squid, and triggerfish were sighted off B.C., alongside other unusual species observations in more recent years. Such reports show that marine animals can turn up outside familiar ranges. Sightings alone, however, do not measure whether a population is growing or shifting its range, nor do they identify what brought an individual animal to a particular place.

Coastal waters are warming, with substantial variation over time

Environment and Climate Change Canada’s 2026 Canada’s Changing Climate Report, Chapter 7, says ocean temperatures around Canada have risen during ice-free periods since the mid-20th century. For B.C., it describes an increase in coastal sea-surface temperatures over eight decades, alongside strong decadal variability. Fisheries and Oceans Canada summarized the regional change as about 0.7°C over roughly 80 years in its 2022 release on Pacific marine ecosystems. That is a broad coastal B.C. figure—not a measurement from Haida Gwaii on the day the swordfish was found.

Marine extremes can disrupt ecosystems

The 2026 federal report describes the Blob’s broader impacts as including distribution shifts in more than 200 marine species, closures of commercially important fisheries, and mass strandings of marine mammals and seabirds. This establishes the scale of disruption associated with that extreme event; it does not connect the Haida Gwaii carcass to the Blob or prove that climate change caused this individual fish’s presence.

What do changing ocean conditions mean for fisheries?

Extreme years can raise the risk of very low catches

UBC reports on a global study by its authors’ team covering three decades of data, 1,246 species, and 254 regions. According to UBC’s account, unusually high ocean temperatures and very low primary production can increase the likelihood of extremely low fish catches, with greater risk when extremes coincide or persist across years. The article reports that two consecutive years of extreme temperatures increased the likelihood of extremely low catch by 40 per cent globally. This is a result reported for a global analysis, not a forecast for any particular B.C. fishery; the UBC account does not provide the underlying study’s methods in enough detail to support a more specific interpretation.

Why the effects can outlast an extreme event

Marine extremes can disrupt food webs and fish-stock productivity, and their effects may continue after water temperatures cool. Long-term warming can alter species abundance and distribution, while extreme years add short-term variability. Together, these pressures make catches more difficult to predict.

What can help managers and fishing communities prepare?

UBC’s account points to resilient fish stocks and intact habitat, early-warning systems, and flexible climate-informed plans as practical parts of preparedness. Co-authors Isabella Morgante, a PhD candidate, and William Cheung, a professor and director of UBC’s Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries, say: “Early warning systems and flexible, climate-informed plans could give fisheries managers and fishing communities time to adjust fishing strategies, quotas or other activities before an extreme event reaches its full impact.”

What the swordfish sighting can—and cannot—tell us

  • It can: document an unusual occurrence and prompt attention to changing marine conditions.
  • It cannot: establish a trend in swordfish numbers, explain this fish’s death, or quantify the effect of climate change or El Niño on its arrival.
  • The wider evidence shows: coastal B.C. waters have warmed over decades, while marine heatwaves and other extremes can add substantial disruption and variability.
  • For fisheries: the reported 40 per cent increase in risk concerns a global analysis and should not be treated as a local catch forecast.
