A stock’s return percentage is the gain or loss compared with the amount invested over a specified period. It may measure only the share-price change (price return), or it may also include dividends and other investment earnings (total return). Until you know which measure, dates, cash flows, costs and taxes were used, the percentage is incomplete.

For example, a 16.67% return can describe a one-year result or a five-year cumulative result. Those outcomes are not equivalent: FINRA’s illustration annualizes the five-year result to 3.13% a year. Historical returns describe what happened, not what the stock will deliver next.

What a stock return percentage measures

Owning stock can produce a return in two basic ways: the share price can rise, and the company can pay dividends. The price can also fall, producing a loss. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) explains that stocks represent ownership in a company and that investors may receive dividends or gains when they sell for more than they paid. See the SEC’s Stocks – FAQs for that overview.

A return percentage puts the change in the context of the starting investment. In general terms:

  • Percentage: the gain or loss is divided by the investment amount, then expressed as a percentage.

FINRA’s investor-education formula states, “Total return = Gain or loss in value + Investment earnings” and “Rate of return = Total return ÷ Investment amount.” The formula appears in FINRA’s Key Concepts: Return and Rate of Return. A published percentage is meaningful only when you can identify the period and the items included in those two parts of the calculation.

Price return versus total return

Price return

A price return measures only the change in the stock’s market price. If a share rises from $30 to $35, the price gain is $5. Dividing $5 by the $30 starting price gives a 16.67% price return:

($35 − $30) ÷ $30 = 0.1667 = 16.67%

This measure answers, “How much did the quoted share price change?” It does not count a dividend paid during the holding period unless the source explicitly incorporates it.

Total return

Total return adds investment earnings, such as cash dividends, to the change in value. Using FINRA’s educational example, buying at $30, selling at $35 and receiving a $1 dividend produces a $6 total gain before expenses. The total return is therefore 20% before expenses:

($35 − $30 + $1) ÷ $30 = $6 ÷ $30 = 20%

If the share is bought for $35 and sold for $30, the price loss is $5. A $1 dividend reduces the loss to $4 before expenses, so the total return is a loss of 11.43%:

These are arithmetic illustrations, not market forecasts. Commissions, fund expenses, account charges, taxes and the treatment of dividend reinvestment can change an investor’s actual result. A quoted “total return” is not automatically the same as the cash left in your account.

How the two measures differ

Measure What it includes What it answers What to check
Price return Change in share price How much did the quoted price rise or fall? Whether dividends and other distributions are excluded
Total return Change in value plus investment earnings such as dividends How did the investment perform when earnings are counted? Whether dividends are assumed reinvested, and whether costs or taxes are included
Investor’s realized result The cash flows and value actually received What did my account gain or lose? Trading costs, taxes, withholding, timing and personal cash flows

Do not assume two websites use the same definition simply because both label a figure “return.” The SEC’s Investor Bulletin: Performance Claims (September 15, 2022) advises readers to understand how performance claims are calculated, including dividend treatment and assumptions about taxes and market conditions.

Why the time period is essential

A percentage without a period cannot be interpreted reliably. An annual return describes profit or loss over one year; Investor.gov notes that more than one calculation method can be used. Its glossary explains the concept at Annual Return.

Cumulative return

A cumulative return covers the entire interval between the stated start and end dates. If an investment gains 16.67% from purchase to sale, that is the cumulative result for that holding period. It does not say the investment gained the same percentage in each year, or that the path was smooth.

Annualized return

An annualized return converts a multi-year cumulative result into an equivalent average compounded annual rate. It makes holding periods easier to compare, but it does not rewrite the historical result or claim that each calendar year produced that rate.

FINRA’s example shows why the distinction matters: a 16.67% cumulative return over one year is materially different from a 16.67% cumulative return over five years. The five-year figure is annualized at 3.13% in its illustration. Always label a number as cumulative or annualized, and provide the dates or duration.

Compounding means the annualized figure is a mathematical summary of the complete period. A stock could rise sharply in one year, fall in another and finish with the same annualized result as a steadier investment. The annualized label does not reveal that sequence.

Dates and partial years

“One-year return” can mean different things if one source uses calendar-year performance and another uses the exact prior 12 months. A comparison should state the start date, end date and whether the interval includes a partial year. Using the same dates prevents a market rally or decline from being assigned to one investment but not another.

What is included in the calculation?

Dividends and distributions

Check whether the figure is price-only or total return. A stock that pays a dividend can have a smaller price return than total return even when the investor’s combined value is positive. For a fund or index, distributions may be treated as paid out or reinvested; those choices produce different figures.

Fees and expenses

Some performance figures are shown before trading costs or fund expenses; others are reduced by expenses. The label or methodology should say which. A small annual charge can materially affect a multi-year result because it reduces the amount that remains invested and compounds over time.

Taxes

Tax treatment depends on the account, the investor’s jurisdiction, holding period and the type of income. A performance series may be reported before tax, after an assumed tax rate or without attempting to model an individual investor’s tax bill. Unless the source specifies otherwise, do not treat a published return as your after-tax return.

Cash-flow assumptions

Adding money, withdrawing money or reinvesting dividends changes the account balance. A simple holding-period return assumes a defined starting investment and ending value. When contributions occur at different times, a calculation that accounts for the timing of cash flows may be needed; the quoted number should identify its method.

What the percentage does not tell you

  • Volatility or the path: The same ending percentage can result from a smooth climb, a severe drop followed by a recovery or many sharp swings.
  • Risk of loss: A positive historical return does not show how much capital was temporarily at risk or how large an interim decline occurred.
  • Liquidity: The number does not tell you how easily shares could be sold at a quoted price, especially during stressed markets.
  • Future performance: FINRA states, “Past performance rarely predicts future results.” The SEC likewise says, “However, past performance cannot predict how an investment strategy will perform in the future.” Those statements appear in FINRA’s return education and the SEC’s performance-claims bulletin.
  • Personal suitability: A return does not account for your objectives, time horizon, emergency savings, ability to tolerate losses or need for income.
  • Whether the result was real or hypothetical: The SEC warns that hypothetical targets and back-tested results are not actual performance. Cherry-picked start and end dates can also make a presentation look unusually strong or weak.

Long-run estimates sometimes cited for diversified U.S. stock investments are broad historical context, not a guaranteed rate for an individual stock. A single company can perform very differently from a diversified market portfolio.

How to compare a stock’s return with a benchmark

Comparison is useful only when the figures are compatible. FINRA says return can help evaluate performance against expectations, especially when compared with similar investments or an appropriate benchmark. Its example is comparing a large-company stock or large-company stock fund with the S&P 500.

  1. Match the dates. Use the same start and end dates, including the same treatment of partial years.
  2. Match the return measure. Compare price return with price return, or total return with total return. Do not compare a stock’s dividend-inclusive result with an index’s price-only result.
  3. Match the time basis. Compare cumulative figures over the same duration, or compare annualized figures calculated over compatible periods.
  4. Match costs where possible. A gross stock result and an after-expense fund result answer different questions. Identify whether fees, expenses and taxes are reflected.
  5. Choose a comparable benchmark. A broad market index may be unsuitable for a narrowly focused company. Consider company size, geography, industry and currency exposure.
  6. Read the methodology. Look for dividend reinvestment assumptions, corporate-action adjustments and any exclusion of cash flows.

A benchmark is a context tool, not proof that a stock is attractive. Outperformance in one interval may reflect unusual sector conditions or a selected date range, while underperformance may reflect a different risk profile.

A practical checklist for reading any return percentage

Before relying on a displayed number, answer each question:

  • What measure is it? Price-only, total return or an account-level result?
  • What are the dates? Record the exact start and end dates and the currency.
  • Is it cumulative or annualized? If annualized, how long was the underlying holding period?
  • Are dividends included? If yes, were they paid out or assumed reinvested?
  • Are costs included? Check commissions, management expenses and other charges.
  • Are taxes included? Identify the assumed tax treatment, if any.
  • What cash flows occurred? Note deposits, withdrawals and dividend payments.
  • What is the comparator? Use a similar stock or an appropriate index over the same basis.
  • Is the result actual or hypothetical? Treat back-tests, targets and selected periods as illustrations rather than realized history.
  • What remains unknown? A percentage alone does not reveal volatility, drawdowns, liquidity or future performance.

Worked interpretation examples

Example 1: identical percentage, different duration

Suppose two reports both show 16.67%. Report A covers one year. Report B covers five years. Report A describes the entire one-year gain. Report B describes the entire five-year gain; FINRA’s annualized illustration converts it to 3.13% per year. Calling both “16.67% per year” would misstate Report B.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Example 2: dividend changes the conclusion

A share bought for $30 and sold for $35 has a 16.67% price return. If it also paid a $1 dividend, the total gain before expenses is $6 and the total return is 20%. Omitting the dividend understates the investment’s earnings; including it without disclosing the assumption makes the figure difficult to reproduce.

Example 3: a negative price return with a smaller total loss

A purchase at $35 followed by a sale at $30 produces a 14.29% price loss. A $1 dividend reduces the loss to $4, or 11.43%, before expenses. The dividend softens the loss but does not turn this example into a gain.
