A portable power station can make car camping more comfortable, but one sunny weekend is not a promise of the same runtime for every trip. In a three-day UK camping trip during a heatwave, Tom’s Guide writer Jeff Parsons used a Jackery Explorer 2000 and reported packing up after 48 hours with 42% charge remaining. His use was relatively light: a kettle was the main high-power appliance, and he did not run a refrigerator continuously.

What happened on the camping trip

Parsons began with the Explorer 2000 at 100% and ended at 42% after 48 hours off-grid. The three-day trip took place during a UK heatwave, with temperatures around 32°C (89.6°F). The station is listed in the account at 2,042Wh and 39.5 lb (17.9 kg).

The result is useful as a real-world example, not a runtime guarantee. The author describes relatively light use; the kettle was the main draw and used close to the station’s reported 2,200W output. A refrigerator was not left running continuously. A campsite with more appliances, longer use, or less opportunity to recharge could produce a very different result. Read the Tom’s Guide account.

What that charge level means for your own trip

Capacity in watt-hours (Wh) tells you how much energy a station stores; the power draw of an appliance, measured in watts (W), and how long it runs determine how quickly that energy is used. As a rough planning calculation, divide the station’s usable watt-hours by the appliance’s average wattage to estimate hours of operation. In practice, conversion losses, varying appliance loads, temperature, and other devices reduce the energy available at the outlet.

  • Smart App Control: Effortlessly switch between different charging modes with Jackery’s App—including one hour emergency charging from 0 to 100%, 30 dB quiet overnight charging mode, and energy efficiency mode. Maximize the freedom to adjust the power station to meet your needs.

The Tom’s Guide article estimates roughly 15 hours for a 90W portable refrigerator. Treat that as the article’s rough estimate, not a universal or independently tested runtime. Actual refrigerator consumption can vary as its compressor cycles and with ambient temperature and settings.

Check the load before you pack

  • List each device and its use: estimate hours of operation, and note which appliances run together.
  • Check continuous and surge output: the station must support an appliance’s operating draw and, where relevant, the brief higher demand when it starts.
  • Account for the outlet: AC appliances use the station’s inverter; DC devices may use less conversion overhead, depending on the station and connection.
  • Keep reserve energy: avoid planning around the full rated capacity if you need power for the trip home or changing weather.

Can solar recharge a power station over a weekend?

It can contribute charge when the panel receives suitable sunlight, but the result depends on sun exposure, shade, panel placement, available daylight, and conversion losses. Parsons took one 100W panel and reported that it delivered the full 100W input during the very sunny weekend. He estimated that supplying 2,042Wh at 100W would require around 20 hours of panel input, or roughly four days at four to six peak sun hours per day. That simplified estimate does not account for every real-world loss or changing conditions, so a single 100W panel should not be assumed to refill a large station during a typical weekend.

The article says two panels could provide up to 400W of solar input and reports Jackery’s claim of a five-and-a-half-hour full charge at that input. It also reports claimed wall-charging times of about 1.7 hours, or 1.33 hours using the app’s emergency charge mode. These are manufacturer claims relayed in the article, not timing results from Parsons’s trip.

Plan around the weather, not the panel’s peak rating

  • Panel wattage is a rated maximum, not a guaranteed all-day output.
  • Move or angle panels to improve exposure when practical, and expect shade or changing conditions to reduce input.
  • Consider a larger panel if faster solar recovery matters; the author recommends considering a 200W panel, but his reported trip used 100W.
  • Check the station’s solar input limits and the panel’s connector and voltage. A third-party panel may need an adapter, and compatibility must be confirmed for the exact station.

Is a 2,042Wh station the right size and weight?

The Explorer 2000’s reported 39.5 lb (17.9 kg) weight may be manageable when loading a car for a campsite, but burdensome if you must carry it a long distance. Choose capacity and portability together: extra stored energy helps support larger or longer-running loads, while a heavier unit can be inconvenient once you leave the vehicle.

What else should you check before choosing one?

Output and ports

Confirm that the station can run each appliance and start any motor-driven equipment. Check the continuous AC rating and surge rating separately, then confirm the physical ports and whether your devices use AC or DC. If several devices need to operate at once, add their simultaneous loads rather than assessing each in isolation.

Recharge choices

Compare solar input limits and expected panel output with your likely sun exposure. Also consider wall or vehicle charging if those are practical for your route. A fast wall-charge claim does not solve a trip where no outlet is available, and a large panel rating cannot overcome persistent shade.

Sound and campsite placement

Parsons described a faint whirr when standing close to the Explorer 2000 and said it did not disturb his sleep. That is a qualitative account, not a measured noise test. If you are sensitive to fan noise, consider where the unit can sit relative to your sleeping area and check the manufacturer’s operating guidance.

Who should consider this kind of setup?

  • Car campers with multiple devices: a larger station may be worthwhile when its capacity, output, and weight fit the gear you actually use.
  • Campers mainly charging small electronics: a compact, lower-capacity option may be easier to carry; verify that its output and ports meet your needs.
  • Trips relying on solar alone: plan conservatively around likely sunlight and panel placement, and do not count on peak input throughout the day.
  • Long carries from the vehicle: give weight and carry design as much attention as capacity.
