Short answer: A phono preamp (also called a phono stage or RIAA preamp) boosts a turntable cartridge’s tiny signal to line level and applies the RIAA playback equalization that restores the intended tonal balance. Your system needs one suitable phono stage somewhere in the chain—inside the turntable, inside a receiver or amplifier, or as a separate component. Check whether the turntable is outputting PHONO or LINE, then connect it to the matching input. A LINE output goes to AUX, CD, TAPE, or another line input; a raw PHONO output goes to a compatible PHONO input or through an external phono stage first.

What a phono preamp actually does

A phono cartridge generates a very small electrical signal. A phono stage performs two related jobs before that signal reaches the normal inputs on an amplifier or powered speaker system.

1. It raises the signal to line level

Lenco’s support guidance gives approximate examples of the difference: a PHONO signal may be about 5 mV, while a LINE signal may be about 150–200 mV. Those are illustrative values, not universal specifications for every cartridge or line input. The stage supplies the gain needed to make the cartridge output usable by standard inputs such as AUX or CD.

2. It applies RIAA playback equalization

Records are cut using the RIAA recording curve: bass is reduced and treble is relatively emphasized during cutting so the groove can fit practical limits and surface noise is less prominent. During playback, the phono stage applies the inverse response, restoring bass and reducing the relative treble emphasis. Without that equalization, a record played through a plain line input would sound extremely thin and bright even if the volume were high enough.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Gain and equalization are separate requirements. A device that merely makes the signal louder is not automatically a phono stage; it must also provide the appropriate RIAA playback curve.

Where the phono stage can be located

There is no required box or brand. The stage can be built into any of these places:

  • The turntable: A switch marked PHONO/LINE or a specification stating “built-in phono preamp” indicates that the turntable can provide either its cartridge-level output or a preamplified line output.
  • A receiver or integrated amplifier: An input marked PHONO, GRAM, or RIAA normally contains a phono stage. The owner’s manual still determines which cartridge types it accepts.
  • An external phono stage: This separate unit sits between a turntable’s raw PHONO output and a normal line input. It is useful when the existing components have no suitable stage or when their cartridge matching does not fit.

A working setup needs one appropriate stage, not necessarily a separate one. The practical question is therefore “Where is the compatible stage?” rather than “Do I own a box called a preamp?”

  1. Inspect the turntable. Look at the rear panel and controls for a built-in phono preamp or a PHONO/LINE switch. Read the manual to determine what each switch position means. In one position the RCA sockets may output raw cartridge-level PHONO; in the other they may output preamplified LINE.
  2. Check the switch position. A switchable turntable must be treated according to its current setting. “LINE” on the turntable means its internal stage is active; “PHONO” means the cartridge signal still needs a phono stage elsewhere.
  3. Inspect the receiving component. Find an input labelled PHONO, GRAM, or RIAA. Confirm in the manual that it supports your cartridge type. Inputs labelled AUX, CD, TAPE, and LINE IN are line inputs and do not perform phono gain or RIAA equalization.
  4. Choose the matching connection. Connect a turntable set to LINE directly to a line input. Connect a turntable set to PHONO to a compatible PHONO input, or route it through an external phono stage and then into a line input.
  5. Use exactly one phono stage. An enabled turntable stage or an external stage must feed a line input, not another active PHONO input. A PHONO input applies additional gain and equalization, so feeding it an already processed LINE signal can produce excessive level and incorrect tonal balance.
  6. Verify the cartridge match and grounding. Check the cartridge’s MM or MC type, output level, recommended gain, and loading. Attach the turntable ground wire to the matching ground terminal when the equipment instructions call for it.

PHONO and LINE: the labels that determine the cable path

Source output What it means Correct destination Do not use
PHONO Low-level cartridge signal; RIAA correction and gain are still required A compatible PHONO input, or an external phono stage followed by a line input A plain AUX/CD input without an external stage
LINE The turntable’s built-in stage has supplied gain and RIAA equalization AUX, CD, TAPE, LINE IN, or another standard line input Another PHONO input
External stage output Line-level signal after phono gain and equalization AUX, CD, TAPE, LINE IN, or a powered speaker’s line input A PHONO input

RCA plugs do not reveal the signal type. The same red-and-white connectors can carry either PHONO or LINE, so rely on the labels, switch position, and manual rather than on the cable itself.

Cartridge compatibility: MM, high-output MC, and low-output MC

A PHONO input is not automatically suitable for every cartridge. Moving-magnet (MM) and moving-coil (MC) cartridges can have very different output levels and electrical loading requirements.

MM and high-output MC

Many built-in receiver stages are designed for MM cartridges and may also accept high-output MC models. Cambridge Audio’s published guidance for its AXR85/100 receiver specifies MM and high-output MC cartridges producing 2–6 mV, with a 30–50 kOhm load impedance. Those figures apply to that receiver, not to PHONO inputs in general.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Low-output MC

The same AXR85/100 guidance says low-output MC cartridges below 1 mV, typically paired with a 10–1000 Ohm load range, cannot be connected directly to that receiver’s PHONO input. They require a matching transformer or a phono preamp designed for low-output MC operation. Other receivers use different specifications, so do not infer universal limits from this example.

What to compare in the manual

  • Cartridge type: MM, high-output MC, or low-output MC.
  • Output voltage: The cartridge’s stated mV output must fit the stage’s expected range.
  • Gain: More gain is normally needed for a low-output MC than for an MM cartridge.
  • Input impedance and capacitance: The stage’s loading should be within the cartridge manufacturer’s recommendation.
  • Equalization: Confirm that the stage provides the standard RIAA playback curve.

If any of these values are missing, consult the cartridge and electronics manuals before connecting power or raising the volume. A connector that fits mechanically can still be electrically unsuitable.

Common connection arrangements

Turntable with a built-in preamp to a receiver or amplifier

  1. Set the turntable’s switch to LINE or enable its internal preamp.
  2. Connect its RCA output to AUX, CD, TAPE, or another line input.
  3. Leave the receiver’s PHONO input unused for this connection.
  4. Connect the ground wire only as the turntable and receiver manuals specify; some built-in-preamp designs handle grounding differently.

If the sound is extremely loud, distorted, or tonally wrong, recheck that the turntable is not feeding PHONO while the receiver is also applying a stage.

Turntable without a built-in stage to a receiver with PHONO

  1. Leave the turntable in its raw PHONO configuration.
  2. Connect the RCA leads to the receiver’s PHONO input.
  3. Connect the turntable ground lead to the receiver’s ground terminal if provided.
  4. Verify that the receiver’s PHONO specification matches the cartridge.

This is the simplest arrangement when the receiver’s input supports the cartridge’s output and loading.

Turntable without a built-in stage to an external phono preamp

  1. Connect the turntable’s RCA outputs to the external unit’s PHONO or INPUT sockets.
  2. Attach the turntable ground wire to the external unit’s ground terminal when required.
  3. Connect the external unit’s OUTPUT sockets to AUX, CD, TAPE, LINE IN, or a powered speaker’s line input.
  4. Do not connect that processed output to a receiver PHONO input.

This arrangement is also appropriate when a receiver has no PHONO input or when its stage does not match the cartridge.

Turntable with a LINE output and powered speakers

A turntable’s LINE output can feed powered speakers or another device with a line-level input, provided the speakers accept the connector and level. A phono stage is not the same thing as a power amplifier: passive speakers still need an amplifier capable of driving them. Fluance’s support guidance makes this distinction explicit when discussing turntables with built-in preamps.

Grounding and hum

A thin ground wire is commonly supplied with a turntable that outputs raw PHONO. Connect it to the amplifier or external stage’s ground post when both manuals call for it. Missing or incorrect grounding can create a persistent 50/60 Hz hum, depending on the electrical system. Keep signal cables away from power cables where practical, and tighten the ground post without forcing it.

Grounding instructions vary with the equipment design. Do not assume that every turntable with a LINE setting must use the same ground arrangement as a fully passive PHONO-output model; follow the specific manual.

  • Loading: Input impedance and, where relevant, capacitance should suit the cartridge.
  • RIAA accuracy: The specification should identify RIAA equalization.
  • Connections: Confirm RCA input and output sockets, plus a ground terminal if your turntable needs one.
  • System placement: The output must go to a line input, not a second PHONO stage.

An external unit is not automatically better sounding than a correctly matched built-in stage. Its practical advantages are compatibility, connection flexibility, and the ability to replace a missing or unsuitable stage. Any claim of sonic improvement depends on the particular components and installation rather than on the word “external” alone.

Example specification: Emotiva PH1

Emotiva documents its PH1 as an MM/MC phono stage with RCA inputs, a ground terminal, and line-level outputs. Its published specifications list 40 dB of MM gain, 60 dB of MC gain, 47 kOhm MM input impedance, and 100 Ohm MC input impedance. These are manufacturer specifications for that model, not a comparative listening test or a universal target for all systems. Use them as an example of the information a product page should disclose, then compare those values with your cartridge’s requirements.

Receiver-specific example: Cambridge Audio AXR85/100

Cambridge Audio’s connection guidance for the AXR85/100 illustrates why model-specific checking matters. Its PHONO input is specified for MM and high-output MC cartridges with 2–6 mV output and a 30–50 kOhm load impedance. Low-output MC cartridges below 1 mV, generally using 10–1000 Ohm loading, need a suitable transformer or phono preamp instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For this receiver, Cambridge also cautions against connecting an external phono preamp—or a turntable with its internal stage enabled—to the receiver’s PHONO input. The processed output should go to a line input. This is an example of a wiring rule that is correct for the signal path even though the exact cartridge limits belong only to that receiver model.

Troubleshooting by symptom

No sound or only a very faint sound

  • A raw PHONO output may be connected to AUX or CD without a phono stage. Add an external stage or move the cable to a compatible PHONO input.
  • An input selector or tape-monitor setting may be wrong; select the socket actually in use.
  • Check that the cartridge leads and RCA plugs are fully seated.

Very loud, harsh, or distorted sound

  • The turntable may be set to LINE while connected to PHONO, creating two stages in series.
  • An external stage may be feeding a receiver’s PHONO input. Move it to AUX, CD, TAPE, or LINE IN.
  • The cartridge output may exceed the stage’s intended range; consult both manuals.

Thin, bright bass-light sound

  • The signal may be going directly from PHONO to a line input, bypassing RIAA equalization.
  • A phono stage may be switched off, or a cable may be connected to the wrong output on a switchable turntable.

Persistent hum

  • Connect the turntable ground lead to the designated ground terminal when required.
  • Check that the RCA shield connections are secure and separate signal cables from power wiring.
  • If the turntable’s internal preamp is active, follow that model’s grounding instructions rather than assuming the wiring of a passive PHONO setup.

One channel is missing

  • Swap left and right RCA cables at one connection point at a time to identify whether the fault follows the cable, channel, or component.
  • Inspect the cartridge clips and stylus assembly for a loose connection.
  • Confirm that balance, mono, and input-routing controls are not muting one channel.

A concise decision tree

  1. Does the turntable provide LINE output? If yes, use AUX/CD/LINE IN and stop; do not add another phono stage.
  2. If it provides only PHONO, does the receiver have a compatible PHONO input? If yes, connect there and ground as instructed.
  3. If neither condition is true, add an external phono stage matched to the cartridge, then connect its line output to AUX/CD/LINE IN.
  4. Is the cartridge low-output MC? Verify gain and loading specifically; a generic MM-only input is not sufficient.
  5. Are you still hearing hum or incorrect level? Recheck the switch position, input label, grounding, and the one-stage-only rule before replacing equipment.

Key takeaways

  • A phono preamp provides both gain and inverse RIAA equalization.
  • The stage may be inside the turntable, receiver, integrated amplifier, or an external box.
  • LINE output belongs on AUX, CD, TAPE, or another line input; raw PHONO output needs a compatible PHONO input or an external stage.
  • Use only one active phono stage in the signal path.
  • Cartridge type, output voltage, gain, and loading determine compatibility; low-output MC cartridges often need specialized support.
  • Grounding and the exact equipment manual matter as much as the connector shape.
