A PDF link checker can confirm that links point somewhere, but a useful QA pass also checks whether they lead to the right place. In a September 27, 2026, account on DEV Community, DesignClarity describes reopening a finished 871-page planner with pypdf, checking all 8,556 internal link annotations, and reporting zero broken links. The process also caught a serious development bug: page insertions had shifted links built from raw page numbers, sending hundreds of links to the wrong destinations.

What the script checked

DesignClarity describes a two-pass workflow: first generate and link the planner, then reopen the exported PDF for a separate verification pass. The reported planner contained 730 daily pages and 105 weekly spreads, with six recurring tabs producing 5,226 tab links across the 871 pages. Its reported file size was 2.5 MB. These are figures for this one planner, not typical PDF specifications or a general performance benchmark.

The author summarized the verification this way: “The verification script re-opens the built PDF with pypdf and checks: (1) page count exactly 871; (2) every link annotation resolves — 8,556 checked, 0 broken; (3) semantic spot-checks — extract text from the destination page and confirm it contains the expected date; (4) week-chain integrity across all 105 weeks including year boundaries; (5) static-file check — no JavaScript, no external URIs, fully offline.” Read DesignClarity’s account on DEV Community.

The result is the author’s report of that build and its implemented checks, not an independently reproduced benchmark. The useful distinction is between link existence and link correctness: a destination can resolve successfully and still be the wrong page.

Why links drifted during development

The failure occurred when pages were inserted after links had been assigned raw page numbers. A link aimed at a particular page index can become stale when the document’s pagination changes; in this case, the author says hundreds of links ended up pointing to the wrong places.

The final implementation used named destinations instead. Rather than encode a changing page index, a link refers to a stable label associated with a date or section. That makes links more resilient to layout changes, although it does not eliminate the need to validate the exported PDF after edits.

How the QA went beyond “does it open?”

Check destinations for meaning

The script extracted text from selected destination pages and checked for the expected date. For a planner, this catches a calendar cell that opens a valid page but not the matching date. Structural resolution and semantic correctness answer different questions, so checking only that an annotation resolves is incomplete.

Verify the weekly sequence across year boundaries

The author checked the week-to-week chain across all 105 weeks, including the December-to-January transition. This targets a common edge case in date-based navigation: links may appear correct within a year but fail when the sequence crosses into the next one.

Inspect for active or external behavior

The static-file check looked for JavaScript, external URI actions, and network calls. This helps establish that the reported PDF’s links were internal and that the file did not contain the checked forms of active or network-dependent behavior. It is not a security audit of every possible PDF feature.

How to apply the approach to your own linked PDF

  1. Build first, then reopen the exported file. Test the actual final PDF, not just the in-memory document or the code that created it. A separate read-back pass can catch export and pagination problems.
  2. Enumerate annotations. Check every internal link annotation when practical, and record how many were examined and how many failed. Sampling may be useful for a quick review, but it cannot support a claim that every link was checked.
  3. Resolve destinations and test their meaning. Confirm that each destination exists, then add targeted semantic checks for important navigation paths—for example, that a date link reaches a page containing that date.
  4. Test sequences and boundaries. Validate ordered navigation such as week-to-week links, with explicit coverage of transitions between months or years.
  5. Prefer stable references over page indices. Use named destinations or another stable identifier supported by your PDF-generation workflow, then rerun QA after any page insertion, deletion, or reordering.
  6. Inspect for unexpected external actions. Decide whether the file should contain JavaScript, external URI links, or network calls; check the finished file against that requirement.
  7. Open the PDF in the viewers readers will use. Automated validation of internal destinations does not prove that a particular viewer or annotation app will display and handle them correctly.

What a passing script does not prove

The reported checks establish that the tested annotations resolved, selected destinations contained expected date text, the weekly chain passed its checks, and the static-file scan found none of the specified active or external behaviors. They do not establish that every destination has the right meaning unless it was semantically checked, that every PDF viewer handles the annotations identically, or that every aspect of the document renders correctly.

DesignClarity specifically said on-device testing in annotation apps such as GoodNotes and Notability was still pending. Those apps are examples of unresolved compatibility, not confirmed test results. A PDF-internal link can be structurally valid while a particular viewer presents or handles it differently.

How to judge a PDF link QA process

  • Coverage: Does it inspect every annotation or only a sample?
  • Meaning: Does it check destination content as well as destination existence?
  • Change resilience: Are links based on stable destinations, and is QA rerun after pagination changes?
  • Scope: Does the process check for unwanted active content or external navigation?
  • Real-world compatibility: Has the finished file been opened in the viewers or annotation apps its audience will use?

DesignClarity’s account illustrates a layered QA method, not a comparison of PDF libraries or a guarantee that a particular tool will catch every defect. Its central lesson is practical: reopen the built PDF, check links at the structural level, verify meaning where it matters, and treat viewer testing as a separate step.
